    ظعائنُ ذاتِ الخالِ قيدَ عِياني

    My friend, I have nothing, no comfort or shelter

    These lovelorn gazelles have bound me

  3. خليلي من لي بالقرار وقد غَدَا

    مكانُ ابنة البكري غَيرُ مكاني

    My friend, who do I have in this land when

    The daughter of Bakri's place is no longer my place

  4. تشآمَ بي شوقي وأيمن شوقُها

    وإنّي وإياها لمختلفان

    Shawqi despaired of me and his love

  5. أقول وقد أمّ المحَّصّب ركبُها

    وعَينَاي كالعينين تنهملان

    I say, as his party's guide went ahead

    Our eyes are like two pools brimming over

  6. ألاَ ليتَ لي طرفَين يطلعانكم

    على البعد أحياناً ويَنْثيان

    Oh would that I had two eyes to see you

    From afar sometimes, and weep

  7. يقولُ أصَيْحَابي حملت وطالما

    تركت المطايا الكومَ وهي حواني

    My friends say I carried and left

    The place of the horses though they surrounded me

  8. وما أنا إلاّ ابنُ المراحل والسُّري

    فليس بمقبوضِ عليّ عناني

    I'm only the son of travels and elopement

    So none can restrain me

  9. ومن ذمّ عند الباخلين زمانهُ

    فإني في زِنًّ بخير زمان

    Whoever criticizes his time with misers

    I live virtuously in the best of times

  10. تذبُ الأذى عني حِدادُ سُيوفهم

    وأحمى على أعراضِهم بلساني

    The blades of their swords defend me from harm

    And my tongue protects their honor

  11. وحَوْلي مِنْ أرماحهم وجفانِهم

    طوالَ رمَاحٍ بل عراض جفانِ

    Around me are their spears and drawn swords

    Like straight tall spears and bare swords

  12. ومن عضّ في أرض الهوان بَنانه

    فإني بعزٍ لا تُعضّ بِناني

    Whoever endures in the land of disgrace

    I have honor that cannot be marred

  13. وَمَنْ كَسُهيل بن الوليد وقومِه

    غَداةَ طعامٍ أو غداة طعانِ

    We are like Suhail bin Al Waleed and his people

    After a meal or morning drink

  14. أناسٌ رباط الخيل بينَ بيوتِهم

    عناجيح من خيفانة وحصان

    People whose horses are tied between their homes

    Stallions from Khifaana and studs

  15. أناس ترى الأرماح حول بيوتهم

    كمثلِ شآبيب الحياءِ المتداني

    You see spears around their homes

    Like the blossoms of the willows leaning

  16. نزيلُهم فوقَ السِّماك وجارُهم

    عزيزُ كجار الأسود بن قِنان

    Their neighbor atop the fortress and alongside

    Is the dear neighbor of the lion in its den

  17. هم ورثوا من خالد بن خويلد

    علا دونَها النضران والقمَران

    They inherited from Khalid bin Khwaylid

    The bright and shining sun and moon

  18. وجدّهُم المُرْوى مَا مدّ رمحَة

    نَجيعاً ونارُ الحربِ ذاتُ دُخان

    Their grandfather displayed his spear

    In battle, with rising smoke

  19. هم منعوا الضحاكُ أكِناف منبجٍ

    بسمرٍ كاشطانِ القليب ليان

    They prevented Dahhak the lands of Minbaj

    With a sword that splits solid rock

  20. ويوم زحاف يوم حيرانَ غادروا

    ترابَ زحافٍ وهو بالدم قان

    On the day of Zuhaaf, the confused day they left

    The dust of Zuhaaf, bloodied

  21. ومِنهم سُهَيل بن الوليدِ وإنما

    رديفَ ملوك بل ربيع زمان

    Among them is Suhail bin Al Waleed, but he

    Is the companion of kings, the springtime of an era

  22. أجَلّ ابن انثى من معدٍ ويَعرب

    وخير شَآميٍّ وخير يماني

    The greatest son of a woman from Ma'add who speaks Arabic

    The best Shami, the best Yemeni

  23. زعيم لعكٍ لا زعيمٌ كمثلِه

    وفردٌ لعمري دونَه الثقلان

    The leader of a glorious people, no leader compares

    Unique in my life, none approach his stature

  24. تُنْيخُ وفودُ الحمد حول رحابه

    لا كرم مُغنٍ في أعز مغَان

    Delegations of praise gather around him

    No generous man in mighty hosts compares

  25. إذا أنشدوا فوق الأرائكَ مدحه

    ظننتهم يتلون أي قُران

    When they recite his praise atop the couches

    You'd think they were reading the Quran

  26. فتىً يفخَر الفتيانُ عن شَيد ما بَنَى

    ويعتذرُ العُمران والعُمَران

    A young man the youth boast of over others

    While civilization and all people apologize

  27. كفاني أبو عثمان عن كلِّ باخل

    ومعطٍ كفاه الله حينَ كفاني

    Abu Othman sufficed me against all the stingy

    And the Provider has sufficed me when He sufficed me

  28. وعاهدني بالبرّ في كلّ حالةٍ

    ووقتٍ فلو لم آته لأتاني

    He promised me kindness in all situations

    And times, so even if I don't come to him, he'll come to me

  29. رعتني عَكٌّ أجمعون بعينه

    نعم ورعانيَ الكل حين رعاني

    All of Akk protected me with their own eyes

    Yes, they all protected me when they protected me

  30. ألا لا خَلَتْ منك البلادُ ولا تزل

    أبا أحمدٍ تبقى وَضِدَّك فإني
