I have not wearied of the folk of love and bending,
Nor wearied of their haunts however life may trend.
I have not wearied of the ruby sands' far-stretching,
My heart is there, though here my body's end.
I left Al-Ameriyeh's abode, like one
Who left, for fear of thirst, sweet waters wend.
Whence now, to cheer me, songs like topaz glowing?
Or gardens bright, or willows softly bent?
Though men accuse me, I must pine to see
The maidens' tents, and their dear right-hand tend,
And tall palm-trees, whenever I try to forget them,
Still call me back, with memories untranscend.
No night compares with Layl al-Jarib's night,
That night is gain however life be sped.
The waters there are sweet, the breeze is fragrant,
Where through the trees the perfumed zephyrs wend.
A land where Mu'adh hurried fearful, dreading
Its huntresses should find himself their prey.
There folk, when foes assailed them, swiftly hiding
Their swords, let show no glance of wrath or fray.
To think of them is joy, my heart keeps near them—
Would God that here like peace one's days might spend!
