1. تذكر إلفاً بالعقيقِ ومسكنا

    وشوّقَهُ البرقُ الذي لاح موُهنا

    I reminisce about a thousand sacrifices in `Uqayq, and a dwelling

    That lightning illuminated and aroused longing in it

  2. فبات كما بات السليمُ مُسَهَّداً

    يعالج وجداً من هناك ومن هنّا

    So it spent the night as al-Salim spent it, lying down

    Treating anguish from here and from there

  3. إذا ما اشتكتْ من سطوة الدمع عينه

    شكى الجسمُ ما يلقاه من سطوةِ الظنى

    When its eyes complain of the tyranny of tears

    The body complains of the oppression of suspicions

  4. وفي مُنْحنى الوادي من أيمنِ الغَضَا

    خيامٌ بَنفسي من خيامٍ ومُنحنى

    And in the valley's curve, on the valley's right

    Are tents that soothe me, of tents and a curve

  5. وبهنانةٍ مثل الهلاَل إذا سرى

    يميسُ بها مثلُ القضيب إذا انثنى

    With gazelles like the crescent when it glides

    The likes of a wand when it bends grace them

  6. مقسمةً ليلاً وصبحاً وجلمداً

    وماءً فما أقسى فؤاداً وألينا

    Dividing night and dawn and frozen darkness

    And water—so how hardened and softened a heart can be!

  7. جميلةُ وجهٍ لا ينالُ جميلُها

    وما خُلقتْ حسنآء إلاّ لتحسنا

    A beautiful face whose beauty cannot be attained

    And no beauty was created but to beautify

  8. أقمتُ برغمي يوم سِرْن ظعونُها

    وما كنتُ أرضى أن أقيمَ وتظعنا

    I stayed against my will the day her bracelets jingled

    And I was not content to stay while she jingled

  9. وكفكتُ جَفْني حين فاض بمائه

    وهيهاتَ قد أضحى له الدمعُ ديدنا

    And I held back my eyelids when its waters surged

    Alas! Tears have become its habit

  10. خليليّ هَلْ وصل النخيلة عائدٌ

    فاعفو عن البينِ المشتتِ ماجنى

    My friend, has the date palm's companion returned?

    So pardon the scattered love that afflicts me

  11. أنا ابنُ الفيافي والقوافي ولم يزل

    جَنى الغصن يثني عنهُ سَاعة يُجتَنى

    I am the son of ryhmes and meters, and fruit

    Of the branch has never ceased to be plucked when ripe

  12. تركْتُ لأهل الغورِ مَا عونَ رِفْدِهم

    ولم أرضْ مَن نزر المعاش بما دنا

    I left the people of al-Ghor what sustains them

    And did not approve whoever scrimps on livelihood

  13. وما زلت مداح الملوك وناظم السُّ

    لوك فما أرضى سوى النجم موطنا

    I have not ceased praising kings and composing poetry of character

    So I am not content unless it is a star my abode

  14. وما لي وقصدُ الباخلين ولم أكن

    لأكسو ثنائي غيرَ من يكتسى الثنا

    I do not aim for the stingy, nor was I

    To clothe my praise in other than the finest raiment

  15. وفي القُلّة الشمَّاء من راس اشيحٍ

    رحيبُ الخُطا والصدر والباع والفِنَا

    In time of dearth, from the head of a shaykh

    Of handsome bearing, chest, stature, and refinement

  16. وإن أيادِي راشد بن مظفر بن مس

    عود تغْنى كلّ من طلبَ الغِنى

    The generous hands of Rashid bin Muzaffar bin Mas`ud

    Suffice every seeker of livelihood

  17. لقد جادني من صارم الدين وابلٌ

    هنىءٌ وخيرُ الوبل للأرض ما هنا

    He gifted me from the swords of al-Din a downpour

    Of blessings, and the best downpours make the land prosperous

  18. تيممتُه من أرضِ قومي مُعْدِماً

    فَعدتُ كأنّي منه صادفت مَعْدِنا

    I sought it from the land of my starving people

    And so returned as if from it I had found a mine
