Speak of those who journeyed, where did they wander?
They traveled with joy from Ays to buzzing Buzal.
Where are the tents and their people, so lonesome now,
And where are the beautiful dark gazelles?
When I stopped at their campsites after they left,
I bowed my head and copious tears rolled down.
In sorrow, I traced in the sand with my fingers,
Though tracing brings me no solace or comfort.
O breeze blowing to Syria, I have no
Consolation or substitute after their loss.
After you left, I found the meadows strange,
Though long I sat shaded under their trees.
I recalled our brief days when you were near,
While my eyes brimmed with tears and grief.
Days I sated with pure wine, crimson,
Carried in a lovely crystal decanter.
After you left, the days turned cruel and unjust,
Bringing sorrow, though time does oscillate.
Think not I forgot our covenants and bonds,
Never! One's first love is not forgotten.
Since you left, neither life nor drink in a silver cup
Could weaken me, though parting's arrows pierced deep.
O carrier of scrolls, there is no tribulation
Like the sorrow of being parted from loved ones.
