We once sang of conceit and wealth,
And time offered us both cups to drink.
Yet neither made us more desirous
Of kinship than our singing, nor poverty more burdensome.
And since I began, I reproached no friend for a slip -
Lest he be pained by the reproach.
Nor did I wrong the cousin if kin turned untrue -
Though time betrayed his brothers.
I know wealth comes and goes,
But tales and remembrance of wealth remain.
The heavens forever revolve amongst all people -
As they say, and the matter after is another matter.
And people have said if Hatem
Wished wealth to last, it would have remained abundant.
