He journeyed by night, while the breeze of the Hijaz caressed—
the boughs of al-Naqā, while rain streamed steadily from the clouds.
Ah, how sweet he was! He came after a spell of sleep,
and, after his agitation, the trembling had subsided.
He came as night let down its curtains—
a beloved well acquainted with the bonds of affection.
Then he stood there, gently knocking at the door,
in a mellow voice, its resonance following wave upon wave.
I said to him, “Who is this standing at the door?”
He answered, “A beloved, ready to grant reunion.”
I told him, “Then surely let our beloved enter—
a hearty welcome! The very perils have granted you safety.”
When we met, he said, “Is there any remaining draught,
if you are in good cheer and your sympathies have softened?”
Then long life to you and your two noble sons in the heights,
while your adversary grows accustomed to loss and humiliation.
For me, in the lofty reaches of your glory and grandeur,
and in your honor above all humankind, are cherished abodes.
And despite the envier and your adversary,
I shall surely pluck with my own hand the fruits of your generosity.
In your presence, I am obedient and humble,
heeding whatever you have said; I do not disobey.
