1. يا نهراً سميتَ بالأصغرين

    وأنت أزريتَ على الأصغرِ

    O river called Al-Asgharin

    Yet you outranked Al-Asghar

  2. لو أنصفَ الناسُ جميعاً لما

    سمّاك أهلُ الأرضِ بالأصغرِ

    Had people been fair altogether

    None would name you so on earth

  3. فطُلْ على أنهارِ كل الوَرَى

    من كلِّ أقطارِ القُرَى وافْخَرِ

    Be superior to all rivers

    From all corners of villages, and boast

  4. فإنما الفضلُ الجميلُ الذي

    يراهُ أهلُ الأرض بالمفخرِ

    For the fine virtue that

    People on earth see prideworthy

  5. مالى أرَى الأقرامَ في غفلةٍ

    لو أنصفُوا سمّوك بالكَوْثَرِ

    Why do I see the senior slackened

    Had they been fair, named you Al-Kawthar

  6. يا روحَ أرواحٍ بنى آدم

    مِن موسر فيهم ومِنْ مُعْسرِ

    O soul of human souls

    Of the rich among them and the poor

  7. يا خيرَ أنهار الورَى كلها

    مِن سائر البُلدان والأخضر

    O best of all rivers

    Of all countries and the greenest

  8. رفعتَ أثمانَك لى تُشترَى

    بخلص العِقْيَان والجوهرِ

    You raised your prices to be bought

    With pure silver and jewel

  9. حتى تُرَى فوق العُلا صاعِدَا

    محلَّ كيوان أو المشترِى

    To be seen high ascending

    Like Kaiwan or Al-Mushtari

  10. يا سيِّد الأنهار من دارِنا

    من كان جاراً لك لم يعسرِ

    O master of rivers of our land

    Whoever adjoined you never knew poverty

  11. ومن شرى ما أنتَ تسقيه من

    نخلٍ ومِن أرضٍ فلم تحسرِ

    And whoever bought what you irrigate

    Of palms and land never grieved

  12. قدِّسْتَ من نهرٍ ومن جدولِ

    قد فازَ من يشرى ومَنْ يشترى

    You are holy than a river or a stream

    Successful is he who buys and who sells

  13. إن يخْسر البائعُ ما باعَه

    مما سقاهُ يربح المُشترِى

    If the seller loses what he sold

    For what it irrigated, the buyer profits

  14. كأنما ماؤك من جنّةٍ

    الفردوس أو مِن مِسكها الأذْفر

    As if your water is from a paradise

    Al-Firdaws or from its perfume Al-Adhfar

  15. حلوت طعماً ومذاقاً كما

    حَلا مذاقُ الشهد والسُّكَّرِ

    Sweet in flavour and taste as

    Sweet is the flavour of honey and sugar

  16. كأنَّ ماءَ الوَرْدِ قد خولطت

    سَلساله من مائِك الأطْهَرِ

    As if rosewater gets mixed

    With your most pure water

  17. لولاكَ أمستْ أرضُنا قفرةً

    خاليةَ الزرع ولم تُبُذَرِ

    Without you, our land would be desolate

    Barren, no sowing and reaping

  18. ولا حَلاَ فيها لنا منزلٌ

    يروقُ في المرْأَى ولا المخبرِ

    And we would have in it no settlement

    Pleasing to the eye or the informed one

  19. وأنتَ ذَا يا أيها الأصغرينِ

    بُورِكْتَ من نهرٍ ومنْ جَعْفرِ

    And you, o Al-Asgharin

    Blessed from a river and from Ja'far

  20. عَسى كما تُصبح لا تأْتلى

    تَجْرى بلا كدّ ولم تُزْجرِ

    I hope as you flow inexhaustibly

    You flow without toil or driving

  21. كأنما ماؤك أمدادُه

    يُؤْتى بلا كدّ مِن الأبْحُرِ

    As if your water is supplies

    Brought without toil from the oceans

  22. أنعشك اللهُ بِسُقيا حياً

    منهمرِ الأنواءِ مُثْعَنْجِرِ

    May Allah revive you with irrigating the living

    Cascading from clouds, pouring

  23. كَىْ تُصْحَ الأرضونَ مخضرّةً

    بنبتها المتَّسقِ الأنورِ

    So the earths become verdant

    With its ascending vegetation

  24. فبعضُه مِن أخضرٍ يانعٍ

    وبعضُه من أحَمرٍ أحمر

    Some of which green, lush

    Some red, red

  25. وبعضُه من يَفَقٍ أبيضٍ

    وبعضُه من فاقع أصفرِ

    Some yellow, white

    Some intense, yellow

  26. لا ذُقْتَ نقصا ما هَمَى وابلٌ

    ومَا تَلا قارٍ على منبرِ

    You never knew scarcity when downpours alighted

    And followed settle on the pulpit
