عسى اللهُ بعدَ البين يجمعُ بيننا

وترجعُ أيامٌ بذاك كرامُ

May God, after this separation, bring us back together,

And days of dignity return,

وأيامُ دهرٍ كان للشملِ جامعاً

ليقضي لنا بعد الفراقِ ذِمامُ

And days when life gathered us under one cloak

To fulfill for us after this parting a bond,

وعلَّ الليالي المقبلاتِ تردُّ مَا

مضَى من ليالٍ حَدُّهن كَهَامُ

And may the coming nights restore

What past nights have undone.

كذَا عادةُ الدنيا اجتماعٌ وفرقةٌ

وحُزْنٌ ونقصٌ تارةً وتمامُ

Such is the way of life, union and separation,

Sorrow and loss at times, and at times completeness.

وقالوا بأسبابِ العزاء تمسّكوا

فكيفً وأسبابُ العزاءِ زمامُ

They say, hold fast to the causes of consolation,

But how can we when the causes of consolation are gone?

فنضحَى بلا صبرٍ جميلٍ كآبةً

عليك ونمسى والدموعُ سِجَامُ

We are consumed with sorrow without elegant patience

For you, and we forget, while the tears flow.

وما ذَا على من لا يرى والداً بأن

يظل كئيباً أو عليهِ ملامُ

What fault lies with one who sees no father

That he remain morose, or bear blame?

وماذا علينَا إن قتلنا نفوسنَا

إذا عزَّ من نهوى وعزَّ مَرَامُ

What good does it do us to kill ourselves

If she we love has honor, and purpose is enhanced?
