1. O friend, your two advisers have counseled you sincerely—so accept their counsel.

    Seek no turning aside from the paths of guidance.

  2. Follow the law of Ahmad, the purest of humankind,

    if you desire to take up residence in an abode

  3. in a Garden, and drink deeply from its gushing springs,

    and rejoice in the fellowship of noble souls,

  4. with crystal-clear drink and wholesome foods,

    the meeting of loved ones and blessed endings,

  5. and give your soul rest in everlasting bliss,

    whose lights’ radiance shall never be extinguished;

  6. and dwell securely in Gardens of Eden

    for all eternity, neither fearful nor led into temptation.

  7. Then heed what I have said, if you are discerning.

    Wash your hands, then, with the water of reverence for God,

  8. of your worldly life, and be rid of the filth of its impurities.

    Set no desire upon it; oppose appetite,

  9. and ask the All-Merciful for protection from it.

    Have you not seen that its gifts are an ordeal?

  10. Humble the soul if it exalts itself in rank;

    never raise it beyond the utmost bound of its measure.

  11. Never send it into commerce in vile wares

    that would plunge you into the darkness of a waning night.

  12. Oppose its desire for the watering places of wrongdoing.

    And when you desire some freshly plucked fruit, ripe and laden,

  13. from whatever glitters, hasten to reject it.

    Restrain its hands, in private and in public,

  14. for everything it desires inclines toward temptation.

    Beware its snares, for you are being tested.

  15. Beware the world and all its bloom, lest

    it twist your reins toward passion for its virgin charms.

  16. Oppose the little band of error in their whims;

    do not be deceived by the conduct of their great men.

  17. Follow the people of truth in what they profess,

    and do not disobey the people of faith in their counsel.

  18. Obey your God, willingly or unwillingly,

    if you wish to attain the utmost of your hopes

  19. and to be safe on Resurrection Day.

    Oppose the soul’s desire, so that you may become a believer.

  20. For good—all good—is the restraining of our souls

    from their deceit; and evil lies in denying that.
