1. شمِّر الذيلَ وبادر للعملْ

    والزمِ التقوى ودعْ عنك الكَسلْ

    Roll up your sleeves and get to work,

    And stick to piety, leave laziness,

  2. واسلكن طرقَ المعالي والتقى

    وَدَعَنْ ذكرَ المناني والطللْ

    And take the paths of glory and piety,

    And leave the mention of worldly desires and comfort.

  3. واهجرٍ القولَ الذي لا يرتجى

    منه نفعاً وافعلِ الخيرَ تنلْ

    Abandon words that bring no benefit,

    And do good deeds, you will gain.

  4. وبذكر اللهِ فالهجْ لا تكنْ

    بسوى الله تعالى مُشْتَغِلْ

    With the remembrance of God, immerse yourself,

    Do not be preoccupied with anything but the Exalted God.

  5. واتق الله تقى عبد صفا

    قلبه لله في كل عَمَلْ

    Fear God with the piety of a pure-hearted servant,

    Whose heart is for God in every deed.

  6. إن خيرَ الزاد تقوى الله والجه

    لُ مردودٌ عَلَى مَنْ قد جَهِلْ

    Indeed, the best provision is God-consciousness and the best

    Destination is for those who returned knowledgeable.

  7. وايْدَ بالقُرانِ تعليماً له

    إن في القرآن تفسيرَ الجُملْ

    Help yourself with the Quran as education,

    For in the Quran is the interpretation of everything.

  8. واحفظِ الشرعَ وكرّر دَرْسَه

    أبداً في كلِّ حينٍ لا تملْ

    Memorize the law and repeat studying it,

    Always, at all times, do not get bored.

  9. واقرأ الشعرَ يسجعٍ سالمٍ

    فهو ديوان المصاليتِ الأُوَلْ

    Read poetry with eloquent, flawless rhymes,

    For it is the record of the finest thought.

  10. إن في الشعر لحكماً بيناً

    قالَ فيه أحمد خيرُ الرسلْ

    Indeed, in poetry there is clear wisdom,

    As Ahmad, the best of messengers, said.

  11. واضرب النية للهِ ولا

    تكُ ذا حمقٍ وعن ذاك فسَلْ

    Set your intention for God and do not be

    A fool, and ask about that and inquire.

  12. لا تقل قولاً ولا تعمل بلا

    نيةٍ واسمعْ مقالي ولا تملْ

    Do not say a word or act without intention,

    Listen to what I say and do not get weary.

  13. لا تجادلْ إن تعامى جاهلٌ

    في أمور فأخو الجهلِ الجدلْ

    Do not argue if an ignorant person argues

    About matters, for argument is the kin of ignorance.

  14. وإذا قلتَ نعمْ فاعملْ بها

    إنما العاقلُ إن قال فَعَل

    And if you say "yes", then act on it,

    The wise man, if he speaks, acts.

  15. ودعِ الإكثارَ في الوصل فمن

    زارَ غِبّاً زادَ حبّاً وإنْ وَصلْ

    Leave excessive association, for whoever

    Visits frequently, increases love, even if he associates.

  16. وذر النذلَ ولا تنصحْ لهُ

    إنما النذلُ كثوبٍ مُبْتذَلْ

    And leave the vile person alone, do not advise him,

    The vile person is like worn-out clothes.

  17. فإذا أصلحته لم يَنْصلح

    كلما رقْعتَ بعضاً ينحلِلْ

    If you fix him, he will not be fixed,

    Every time you patch part of him, it comes loose.

  18. وطِّنِ النفس على الصبرِ ولا

    تكترثْ يوماً إنِ الخطبُ نزَلْ

    Accustom yourself to patience and do not

    Worry any day when calamity befalls.

  19. وإذا شئتَ شِرَاءَ أشياءَ من

    سرقِ أهل العدل عنها لا تَسَلْ

    And if you want to buy things,

    Steal them from the just people, do not inquire.

  20. فإذا قدّمَ شىءٌ لك فخذ

    لا تقلْ من أين مأتاهُ وكلْ

    So if something is offered to you, take it,

    Do not say “Where did you get it?” and eat.

  21. إنما دنياك فاعلمْ كلها

    شبهاتٌ إن تعمَ فيها تضلْ

    Know that all your worldly life

    Is ambiguities - if you are aware in it, you will stray.

  22. قلّما تسلم منها حبةٌ

    خلصتْ من كل عابٍ مَدخَلْ

    Rarely does a pure seed escape

    From every defect or blemish.

  23. لستَ مسئولاً عن الشىءِ الذي

    لست فيه عالِماً أو مستحلْ

    You will not be asked about what

    You do not know or consider permitted.

  24. إنما تسألُ عن علمك بالشىء

    أو قد كنت في شىءِ مُضلْ

    Rather, you will be asked about your knowledge of something

    Or if you misguided others in some matter.

  25. فدِع القالةَ والزمْ ما ترى

    فضياءُ الشمس يغنى عن زُحَلْ

    So leave chatter and stick to what you see,

    For sunlight makes Saturn dispensable.

  26. وإذا صاحبتَ فاصحبْ سيِّداً

    صادقَ اللهجة ذا إن عَدَلْ

    And if you keep company, then accompany

    One honest in speech, just if he judges.

  27. فإذا أولاكَ فاحفظْ وده

    واعفُ عنه إن بَدَا منه خَلَلْ

    So if he grants you loyalty, then keep

    His friendship and overlook if a fault appears from him.

  28. إن يكنْ قبلُ وليّاً مُحسنا

    فاذكرِ الإحسانَ منه واحتِيلْ

    If he was a loyal friend before,

    Then remember his favors and plan.

  29. وكذا سركَ صنه جاهداً

    عن جميع الخلق طُرّا يا رجلْ

    Likewise, hide your secret, striving

    To conceal it from all people, O man!

  30. إنما الشرُّ كجمر في الحشَا

    يتَلظَّى أو كنَارِ تَشْتَعِلُ

    Indeed, evil is like embers in ashes,

    It flares up, or like a burning fire.

  31. لم يطق كتمانَه خلقٌ سوى

    مَنْ أرادَ اللهُ ربى ذُو الأزَلْ

    None can conceal it except those

    Whom God, the Eternal Lord, willed.

  32. والزم الشُّورى وإن شاورتَ في

    فِعل أمرٍ لا تخالف وامْتَثِلْ

    And stick to consultation, and if you consult

    On a deed, do not oppose and comply.

  33. كلْ من المطعومِ ما شئت ولا

    تلبس الفاخرَ أو أَرْدَا الحُللْ

    Eat of the edibles whatever you wish and do not

    Wear luxurious or shiny clothes.

  34. وإذا ما شئت تزويجاً فخُذ

    وسَطام الحسن وارفض ما كَمُلْ

    And if you want marriage, then take

    A woman of average beauty, and reject the perfect.

  35. وكذاكَ نهيُك عَن تزويج من

    قبحت من دونِ ربات الكِلَلْ

    Likewise, I forbid you from marrying one

    Whose ugly character, unlike the virtuous ladies.

  36. وذواتُ الحسن منها كالذي

    حل بستاناً فيا نعمَ المَحَلْ

    Those of good character are like one

    Who settled in a garden - what an excellent place!

  37. أو كَرَوْضٍ باكرتْه مزنةٌ

    فهمَا الغيث بها ثم انْهَطَلْ

    Or like land watered at dawn,

    Then the rain saturated it and flowed.

  38. يجتنى من كلِّ زهرٍ رائقٍ

    ويشورُ الريقَ منها كالْعسلْ

    He picks from every lovely flower

    And sips the nectar as sweet as honey.

  39. فاحفظِ الوصفَ وكُن ذَا فطنةٍ

    ودع الجهلَ وخُذْ قولي وقُلْ

    So memorize this description and be prudent,

    Leave ignorance and take my advice and say:

  40. واقطعْ الآمالَ مِن مال الورى

    واعتصمْ باللهِ نعم المتكلْ

    Cut off hopes from the money of mortals

    And seek refuge in God - an excellent trustee!

  41. إنما المرءُ إذا ما طمعتْ

    نفسه في مال مَنْ والاه ذَلْ

    When one’s soul hopes for the money

    Of someone he befriends, he is disgraced.

  42. وإذا ما قنعتْ نفسُ امرئٍ

    عظمتْ هيبتُه فيهم وَجَلْ

    But when the soul of a man is content,

    His prestige among them is great and he is revered.

  43. وصن المال وفرق طرَفا

    منه فالمرضىُّ منهم مَنْ بَذَلْ

    Hoard money and spend a bit of it,

    On every poor and needy person who asks you.

  44. لا تفرقْه عليهم كلّهُ

    تَنْدَمَنْ فالناسُ أعداءُ المُقِلْ

    Do not spend it all on them,

    You will regret it - people are enemies of the giver.

  45. إنما المالُ لعزٍّ باذخٍ

    وكذَا الإقلالُ في دنياكَ ذُل

    Money is only for conspicuous dignity,

    While lack of it in your life is disgrace.

  46. إنما دُنياك بالمالِ تُرى

    في ذُرى العليا وأخرى بالعَمَلْ

    Your worldly life becomes visible through money

    And through deeds in the hereafter.

  47. ودعِ الخرصَ ولا تسلك له

    طرقاً فالحرصُ كم شخص قتَلْ

    Leave miserliness and do not take

    Its paths - for greed has killed many.

  48. فأرَى الناسَ صديقاً لفتىً

    ذَا سخارٍ وأعادى مَنْ بَخَلْ

    I see people befriend a wasteful youth

    And hate one who is stingy.

  49. لا تغرنْك الأماني كلما

    كثُر المال فتهوى في ظُلَلْ

    Do not let desires deceive you whenever

    Money increases, so you fall in ruins.

  50. أكثرُ الناس إذا ما كثرُ الم

    الُ في كفيه في دنياهُ ضَلّْ

    Most people, when money increases

    In their hands in worldly life, go astray.

  51. إِنما قارونُ من أجلِ الغنى

    ساخَ في الأرضين مما قد عَمَلْ

    Qarun was only brought down because of wealth,

    From what he had worked in the lands.

  52. فإذا أوتيته فاعملْ بما

    جاءَ في القرآنِ في السبع الطُّوَلْ

    So if you are given it, then act

    By what is in the Great Quran.

  53. وذَرِ الشىءَ الذي صاحبُه

    إن يُسَائِل عنه يطرق في وَجَلْ

    And leave what will cause distress

    If the questioner knocks anxiously.

  54. لا يصافِى الحرّ إلا مثلَه

    هل ترى الأحرارَ صافتهم سِفلْ

    The free man is only equal to his peer,

    Do you see the free men ranked the same?

  55. لا تَرَى الإلْفينِ من كلِّ الوَرَى

    ائتلفَا من غير أسبابِ العِلَلْ

    In all the world, you do not see two friendly

    People unless for specific reasons.

  56. ولسانُ المرءِ سيفُ قاطعٌ

    يقتلن صاحبَه إنْ هو زَلّْ

    And the tongue of man is a cutting sword

    That kills its owner if he slips.

  57. وجراحُ النطقِ لا يُبْرَا المُدى

    وجراحُ السيفِ يُبْرَى بالمهَلْ

    The wounds of speech do not heal with time

    While the wounds of the sword heal eventually.

  58. إنْ يكن نطقُك ورداً كلّه

    تجتنيه الناسُ فالصمتُ عَسَلْ

    If your speech is all roses,

    People will pick it. Silence is honey.

  59. وليكن صَمْتُكَ فِكْراً لا تكُنْ

    ساكِناً إلا بقلبِ ذِى وَجَلْ

    Let your silence be reflection, do not stay

    Motionless except with an anxious heart.

  60. ودعِ الأحقادَ والغلّ ولا

    تلزمِ الكبْرَ وجانب مَن هَزَلْ

    Leave grudges, malice and do not

    Insist on arrogance. Avoid one who jokes.

  61. وذَرِ القُربى ولا تقطعْ لها

    رحما فاللهُ ينجِى مَنْ يَصِلْ

    Leave off relatives and do not sever ties with them

    For God saves whoever maintains family ties.

  62. لا تَزُرْ في كل يومٍ مرةً

    كلَّ من تهوى فيعروك الملَلْ

    Do not visit each day once,

    Everyone you love, so boredom afflicts you.

  63. ينبغي في كل شهر مرةً

    إن يكن منك على قُرْب المَحَلْ

    It suffices to visit each month once

    If you are nearby.

  64. أو يكوننّ بعيداً نازحاً

    فزرِ العامَ عزيزاً أو أَقِلُّ

    Or he may be far away, relocated,

    Then visit each year once or less.

  65. مرةً في كل عامٍ واحدٍ

    لا تزدْه ودعَنْ عنك العَذَلْ

    Once in each year, not more,

    Do not increase, leave nagging.

  66. لا نقمْ إلا قليلاً عنده

    قدرَ يومٍ أو ثلاثٍ أو أَقَلّْ

    Only stay with him a few days

    A day, or three, or less.

  67. وكذا إِنْ هُو وإفاكَ فَقُلْ

    مرحباً يا مَنْ إلينَا قد قَفَلْ

    Likewise, if he visits you, say

    “Welcome, O one who has returned to us."

  68. والقَه بالبشرِ واللطفِ ولا

    تَلْقَه بالغلظِ إنْ معْكَ نَزَلْ

    And meet him with cheer and kindness, do not

    Meet him with sternness if he descended upon you.

  69. وإذا صافاك خِلٌّ صافِه

    بالوفاءِ المحضِ لا تبغِ البَدَلْ

    And if an old friend reconciles with you, reconcile

    With complete loyalty - do not seek change.

  70. فإذا زلَّ أقِلْ عثرتَه

    لا ترى في الخَلْق شخصاً لم يَزِلْ

    So if he slips, reproach him little

    For his mistake - pardoning is best for a man.

  71. وإذا أذنبَ عاتبه على

    ذَنْبه فالعفوُ أَحْرَى بالرجُلْ

    Then examine all people - do you see

    Anyone but with faults, even if a hero?

  72. فَتِّشِ الناسَ جميعاً هل ترى

    غيرَ ذى عابٍ وإن كانَ بَطَلْ

    Take their outward behavior and leave

    The hidden. Avoid the ambiguous.

  73. تخُذِ الظاهرَ منهم ودعْ

    المختفي وجانبْ ما اشْتكلْ

    Pluck fruits whenever you can

    Seize an opportunity from them and leave failing.

  74. واجتَنِ الأثمارَ مهما أمكنتْ

    فرصة منهم ودعْ عنك الفشلْ

    And protect the neighbor, even if he is

    An annoying neighbor - protecting the neighbor bridges gaps.

  75. واحفظِ الجارَ وإن جارَ فمَنْ

    حفظَ الجارَ فقد سدَّ الخَلَلْ

    And provide for him if he has a family,

    From the dew of your palms or from your excess.

  76. وأنله إنْ يكُن ذَا عَيلةٍ

    من ندى كفيك أو مما قد فَضَلْ

    And accept the excuse from the sinner if

    He presents his excuse truthfully - do not blame.

  77. واقبلِ العذْرَ من الجاني إذا

    بَسَط العذرَ بصدقٍ لا تُبَلْ

    Do not be harsh, hard-hearted,

    Antagonizing those around you, relatives and in-laws.

  78. لا تكنْ فظّاً غليظَ القلب

    ينقض من حَوْلك أهلٌ وخَوَلْ

    Look after whoever looked after you in all the world

    And accept good deeds from him if he did.

  79. وارْعَ مَن راعَاك في كلِّ الوَرَى

    واقبلِ المعروفَ منه إنْ قَبِلْ

    And show good deeds and distribute them

    Upon every poor person and beggar who asks you.

  80. وابذل المعروفَ وفرّقه علَى

    كلِّ ذى فقرٍ ومَنْ عَنْكَ سَأَلْ

    Charity covers defects, and likewise,

    Stinginess exposes flaws among people.

  81. يسترُ الجودُ عيوباً وكذا

    يظهر العوراتِ في الناسِ البَخَلْ

    Do not let hopes in the horizon

    Deceive you that the world is eternal.

  82. لا تمنيك الأماني في المَدَى

    بخلود إنما الدنيا كَظِلّْ

    Rather, the world is like a shadow,

    And if something escapes you, do not say

  83. وإذا فاتَك شىءٌ لا تقل

    ليتَه لي وعَسَاهُ ولَعَلّْ

    "If only it was mine", hoping and perhaps.

    For wishful thinking is foolishness, so do not

  84. فالتمنّي حرفة الحَمْقَى فلا

    تكنْ الأحمقَ إن شىءٌ رَحَلْ

    Be a fool if something departs.

    And be content with what is given, even if

  85. وارضَ بالشىء الذي يؤتى وإنْ

    قَلّ فالعاقل يرضى بالأقَلّْ

    Little - the wise one is content with less.

    And train the self, make it used to

  86. ورَوِّض النفسَ وَوَطنها علَى

    عَمل الخير ومِنهاجِ السبُلْ

    Working good and the path of righteousness.

    It is like a child, if you wean it

  87. فهيَ كالطفل إذا نهنهته

    عنَ رضاعِ الندْىِ عنه ينفصلْ

    From breastfeeding, it will be separated from it.

    And if you neglect it, it will grow up

  88. وإذا أهملته شَبَّ علَى

    حبّه الندْىَ مَداهُ واتصلْ

    Loving the breast - its habit will persist.

    Discipline it while you are still young

  89. رُدَّها ما دمتَ في سنِّ الصبى

    فعسيرٌ إن إذا المرءُ اكْتَهَلْ

    For it is difficult when one grows old.

    So the deed becomes an inseparable habit,

  90. فيصيرُ الفعلُ طبعاً لازماً

    أبداً لا ينجلى مثلُ الكَحَلْ

    Never clearing like kohl.

    It is said whoever grows up doing something

  91. قيلَ من شبّ على شىءٍ ولم

    يرتدعْ شابَ عليه وثَقُل

    And does not refrain, grows old doing it and it becomes difficult.

    And if an adversity afflicts you, then do not

  92. وإذا مسَّك مكروهٌ فلا

    تبتئسْ في الأمر فالدنيا دُوَلْ

    Despair in the matter - the world constantly turns.

    One time it gives you pure wine, and likewise

  93. مرةً تسقيك صاباً وكذَا

    مرةً تسقيكَ شهداً وعَسَلْ

    One time it gives you sweet honey.

    This is its habit - it passed upon

  94. هكذا عادتُهَا مرت على

    أممٍ من قبلنا لا تَشْتَغِلْ

    Nations before us - do not be preoccupied.

    For if you get a taste of it,

  95. فإذا نالك منها طرَفٌ

    فتيقن عن قليلٍ يَضْمِحلّْ

    Be sure after a little it withers.

    Its riches do not last in it, nor

  96. لم تدمْ أتراحُها فيها ولا

    أبداً يبقى لنَا فيها الجَذَلْ

    Do our roots remain in it forever.

    So if you desire eternity, constantly,

  97. فإذا شبتْ خُلودا دائماً

    وترَى الخيراتِ في أعْلَى مَحَلّْ

    And to see good in the highest places,

    Be like Sultan bin Sayf among people

  98. كنْ كسلطان بن سيف في الوَرَى

    وامتنل أخلافه ثمَّ اشتَمِلْ

    And follow his footsteps then take them as an example.

    He is praised for his agreeable character

  99. فهْو محمود بخلق مرتضىً

    عَمَّ أهلَ السهل جوداً والجَبَلْ

    Which covered the lowlands and mountains with generosity.

    He is the sword of God on earth against

  100. وهْوَ سيفُ اللهِ في الأرض على

    مَنْ طغَى وامتازَ بالجهلِ وضَلّْ

    Those who transgressed and distinguished themselves with ignorance and went astray.

    If he is mentioned in a gathering,

  101. إنْ جرَى ذكرٌ له في محفلٍ

    تشتفى الأجسامُ مِنْ كلِّ العِللْ

    Bodies are healed from all illnesses.

    A King whose opinion his swords are,

  102. ملكٌ آراؤه أسيامه

    ماضياتٌ حدّها لا يَنْفَلِلْ

    His actions have limits that do not waver.

    And a generous man - if a critic comes to him,

  103. وجوادٌ إنْ أتاهُ عاذِلٌ

    قال هيَّا سبَق الجودُ والعدَلْ

    He says “Come now, generosity and justice came first."

    And a courageous man who taught knights in

  104. وشجاعٌ علّم الفرسان في

    الحرب تصريفَ العوالِي والأَسَلْ

    War how to wield weapons and swords.

    Do not underestimate the strength of his hands with the sword

  105. لا تقسْ جدوى يديه بالحيا

    إنْ هَمَي مِن مزنة ثمَّ انهَمَلْ

    If it became excited then rested from the battle.

    His generosity had an effect on us like

  106. جُودُه أثر فينا مِثْلَمَا

    أثَّرت في راحِ كفّيه القُبَلْ

    The kissing of palms affected his resting hands.

    His favors circled the necks of people

  107. طوقَتْ نعماه أعناقَ الورى

    فهيَ من أعناقهم لا تنحللْ

    So they cannot be removed from their necks.

    O youth of the King Al-Murtada,

  108. يا فَتى سيفِ المليك المرتضى

    فُقْتَ أهل الأرض إحساناً فَظَلّْ

    You surpassed the people of earth in benevolence.

    Your good character excelled, so no one

  109. فضلَتْ أخلاقُك الحسنى فما

    سادَ إلاّ مَنْ على الناس فَضَلْ

    Prevailed except those who were superior to people.

    Send your prayers to enemies in their homelands

  110. صُلْ على الأعداءِ في أوطانهم

    فهمْ يغزونَنَا إن لم تصُلْ

    For they invade us if you do not pray.

    And if you pray a skirmish against them,

  111. وإذا ما صُلْتَ عليهمْ صولة

    جوّد الضربةَ ألاّ تندمِلْ

    Make the strike generous, do not weaken.
