إني لأعجبُ من أناس زماننا

في حقٍّ مرضى صحبهم لم ينصفُوا

I'm amazed at people of our time

They were unfair to their sick companions

قصدُ الخلائق في العبادةِ إنهم

إن لم يَعُودُوا في الثلاث توقفُوا

People's aim in worship, if they

Don't visit the sick for three days, they stop

وأنا أقولُ ولو إلى سنةٍ فلا

يجفى الممرّض بل يعادُ فيألفُ

I say even if it's up to a year, don't

Neglect the sick, go back and get acquainted

وإذا امرؤ في الناس طال به الأذى

قطعوا زيارتَه له وتخلَّقُوا

If a man among people suffers harm for long

They cut off visiting him and act piously

إن كنتَ ذا عقلٍ وحلمٍ فاتَّبعْ

ما قلتُ من حقٍّ ودعْ ما صنَّفُوا

If you're reasonable and forbearing, then follow

What I said truly and leave what they classified

ودع الحياءَ وراء ظهرك واستقمْ

بعيادةِ المرضى فأنتَ المنصفُ

Leave shame behind your back and go straight

To visit the sick, for you are the fair one

وإذا مرضتَ فلمْ يعُدْك فتىً فلا

تعتب عليه وكن كأنّك أغْلَفُ

And if you're sick and no lad visits you

Don't blame him, just act as if you don't know

وإذا رَمَته يدُ الحوادث بالأسَى

عُدْ مُسْرِعاً لا يعتريك تكلفُ

And if the hand of fate afflicts him with sorrow

Go swiftly, don't let pretense burden you
