1. إن يومَ الفراق كان شديدا

    فانقصَا مِن ملامتي أو فزيدَا

    The day we parted was so hard

    Go easy on blaming me, or add more

  2. لست أصغِي إلى مقالِ عذولٍ

    لا تطيلا الملامَ والتفنيدَا

    I won't listen to the talk of the critic

    Don't prolong the blame and refutation

  3. خلِّيَاني وحالتي قد كفَاني

    ما أُقَاسِي ولستُ أبغِي مزيدَا

    Leave me be, my state has been enough for me

    I have suffered but I don't want any more

  4. ليسَ لي في الغرامِ رأىٌ ولولا

    الحبُّ لم تقنص الظباءُ الأسودَا

    I have no opinion in love, and if not for

    Love, the gazelles would not hunt the black lions

  5. واتركاني أبكي وأندبُ أطلا

    لاً بحزوى وعالجٍ وَزَرُدَا

    Leave me to cry and mourn my beloved

    With no solace, cure, or glistening pearls

  6. فلعلِّي أشفى الغليلَ من الشوق

    بلثمى أثافياً وصعيدَا

    Perhaps I will heal my agony from longing

    With kisses and barren, empty plains

  7. لامني العاذلونَ جهلاً فقد

    ضلوا بتفنيدهم ضلالاً بعيدَا

    The reproachers blame me in ignorance, so they

    Have gone astray with their far-off refutation

  8. مذ تولّى الفريق فارقتُ صبري

    وألِفْتُ الغرامَ والتسهيدَا

    Since we parted I lost my patience

    And I accustomed myself to love and sleeplessness

  9. أيها المعرضونَ أعرضتمو عني

    فأصبحتُ هائماً معمودَا

    O you who have turned away from me

    You made me wander aimlessly like a pillar

  10. ومن العجيبِ لا أريدُ سواكم

    وتصدُّون عن لقائي صدودَا

    Strangely I want none but you

    Yet you bar me from seeing you like a wall

  11. قد نأيتمْ عني وقد كانَ عيشى

    قبل هذا البعادِ عيشاً رغيداً

    You have distanced yourself from me though before

    My life with you was happy and content

  12. فوصلتُ السهادَ ليلا طويلا

    وهجرتُ الرقادَ هجراً مديدَا

    I connected wakefulness at night for long

    And I deserted sleep completely

  13. قد بعدتمْ عني فعذيتمُو قَلبي

    بهجرانكم عذابا شديدا

    You are far away so you have tortured my heart

    With your abandonment, severe agony

  14. أتمنّى بأن تعودَ لَيَالِينا

    وظنّي بأنها لنْ تعودَا

    I wish our nights would return

    But I expect they never will

  15. وعسى الدهرُ أن يجودَ بلقياكم

    وظنّي بأنه لَنْ يجودا

    Perhaps fate will gift me seeing you again

    But I expect it never will

  16. يَحْسَب العاشقون من شدةِ

    التعذيبِ لا يبعثونَ خلقاً جديدا

    The passionate think from the severity

    Of torture, they will never create something new

  17. قلْ لأهلِ الغرامِ والحب والهجران

    كونوا حجارةً أو حديدَا

    Tell the people of love, passion, and abandonment

    To become rocks or iron

  18. ما لهمْ طولَ دهرهِم لا يفيقونَ

    ويُبْدُون للورَى تجليدَا

    All their long life they do not awaken

    And they appear to people as skin without feeling

  19. وتُقِرُّ الدموعُ منهم بما يخفون

    في الحبِّ إن أرادُوا جحودَا

    Tears confess from them what they hide

    In love, if they wanted denial

  20. كلما أخلقَ الهوى جَدَّدُوه

    بمُنىً أحدثُوا لها تجديدَا

    Whenever passion created something new

    They renewed it with a new love and renewal

  21. مثلُ هذا العذاب إن أخلقُوا

    جلداً من النار أحدثواهم جلودَا

    The like of this torture, if they endure

    They have made their skin into fire, so they have new skins

  22. ما دواءُ العشاقِ من ألم الشو

    قِ سوى أن تلقى الخدودُ خدودَا

    No cure for the lovers from the pain of passion

    Except for cheeks to meet cheeks

  23. من لقلب معذب صار في قيدٍ

    وأضحى من الغرام عميدَا

    Whoever's heart is tortured, imprisoned

    And has fallen deep in love

  24. ليس إلا بلعرباً من ملاذٍ

    إنه كان فِعُله محمودَا

    Has no refuge but in eloquence from a shelter

    Indeed, his actions were praiseworthy

  25. السريَّ القَومَ الجوادَ الموالي

    الحكيمَ السهلَ الحليم الرشيدَا

    The secretive man, the generous, the loyal

    The wise, easygoing, gentle, rightly-guided

  26. المجيرَ الجاني إذا جاءَ عذْرا

    والسخيَّ المعظَّم المصمودَا

    The protector of the sinner when he comes regretfully

    The generous, revered, purposeful

  27. ذَا العطايا الغرِّ السنيَّ المحامِي

    والمصافي العذبَ الحسامَ الحميدَا

    The abundant gifts, the kind, praiseworthy deeds

    The clear, sweet, sword, commendable

  28. يا فَتى المرتضَى الإمام الذي صا

    رَ شقيُّ الورَى به مسعودَا

    O son of the Chosen One, the Imam who

    Through him the wretched became happy

  29. يا فتى أكرم الأنام غدا الجود

    بجدْوَى يديكمُ موجودَا

    O son of the most generous people, generosity

    Through your hands exists plentifully

  30. يا سليلَ الكرامِ صارتْ لك الأ

    عداءُ بالجودِ والسخاءِ شهودا

    O son of the generous, your enemies

    Through generosity and munificence are witnesses

  31. وتخرُّ الملوكُ صاغرةً طوعاً

    وكَرهاً إلى ذُراك سُجودَا

    Kings bow down voluntarily

    And unwillingly to your sanctity, prostrating

  32. فتَملَّ العلياءَ وابلُ الليالي

    وأذلَّ الغاوى وأغنِ الوفودا

    You have filled the highest ranks and the nights rain

    And humiliated the misguided and enriched pilgrims

  33. واسترق الأحرارَ بالجود والجدوى

    وأجزلِ لهم يكونوا عبيدَا

    The free were tempted by your generosity and sacrifice

    And you gave them the most so they would be servants

  34. أنت يا ابن الكرامِ أكبرهم مجداً

    وأنداهم نداً ووجودا

    You, son of the generous, are greatest in glory

    Most eminent in help and sacrifice

  35. وأعزُّ الورى وأرفعُهم عيصاً

    وأزكاهُمُ حمىً وجدودَا

    Most honourable of people and highest in will

    Purest in zeal and sacrifice

  36. وأجلُّ الملوك قدراً وأوفاهم

    عُهوداً ورتبةً ووعودَا

    Greatest of kings in worth, truest in

    Promises, rank, and vows

  37. أنتَ أعلاهُم وأعظمهم حالا

    وعدّا وعدة وجنودا

    You are the highest and greatest in status

    Army, equipment, and soldiers

  38. أرِدُ الجودَ من حياضِكم لا زا

    ل بالجود حوضُكم مورودَا

    I want generosity from your basin, still your

    Basin of generosity flows

  39. لم يزل ملكُكم قويّاً وجَدْوَا

    كمْ عزيزاً وبابُكم مقصودَا

    Your rule has not ceased to be strong and your

    Sacrifice precious, your door sought

  40. وحماكم مجلَّلاً ونداكُم

    مستفيضاً وضدُّكم مطرودَا

    Your sanctuary glorified and your aid

    Overflowing and your enemies expelled

  41. ويداكُم مبسوطةً وعداكم

    في سمومٍ وجاهكم مَمْدُودَا

    Your hand outstretched and your enemies

    Poisoned, and your status extended

  42. وسراياكم كراماً ومثواكم

    رفيعاً وضدكمُ مَفقودَا

    Your halls generous, your dwelling

    Lofty, and your enemies lost

  43. هاكَ يا ابن الإمام مدحاً كأنّ

    النشرَ منه يحكى مَلاَبا وعودَا

    In spreading it tales and promises are recounted

    Radiant as if the sun in brilliance

  44. مستنيراً كأنه الشمس لألاءً

    وكالزِّبرقان لاقى سعودَا

    And like lightning met luck

    With meanings more delicate than the body

  45. وقوافٍ لو أبصرتها الغواني

    نظمتْها قلائِداً وعقودَا

    Of water but they can melt the frozen

    They comfort hearts from every turmoil

  46. بمعانٍ أرقَّ من جَسد الما

    ء لكن تُفتِّتُ الجلمودَا

    But they deprive the mean envious

    Not all rhymed prose is poetry, nor is

  47. فهي تسْلِى القلوبَ من كل بَلْب

    الٍ ولكنْ تضنى اللئيمَ الحسودَا

    Every metre considered glistening beads

  48. ليس كل القريض شعراً ولا كلُّ

    رضاب يُعَدُّ شهداً بَرُودَا
