تُريد أن تشرب من مائنا

وهو الأجاجُ الملحُ لا يُشْرَبُ

You wish to drink from our water,

But it is bitter and undrinkable salt.

هيهات أن تركب مستصعباً

فابن اللَّبون الصعب لا يُركَبُ

It is foolish to try to mount the unridable -

The fierce, unbroken colt cannot be ridden.

إن كنت ذا عقل وذا فطنةٍ

أو كنت ممن في التُّقَى يَرغَبُ

If you had any sense or prudence,

Or sought righteousness,

فاسترزق الرحمن من فضله

واترك سؤالَ الناس يا مُعْجَبُ

Seek your provision from the Merciful,

And stop begging people, O ambitious one.

ولا تكن كلاًّ على صاحبٍ

فالكَلُّ لا يُهْوَى ولا يُصْحَبُ

Do not rely completely on a friend -

Total dependence is disliked and unsupported.

إن الكريم الحُرَّ من قومنا

لو مات جَوْعانا فلا يَطْلُبُ

The generous, free man among our people -

If he dies hungry, he does not ask.

هذا عجيبٌ ما نرى مثله

وقولتى من ذالكم أعْجَبُ

This is wondrous, we see nothing like it,

And I say that of you all, it is most wondrous.

يا قومنا سامحوا واعذروا

واعفوا عن الجاني ولا تعتبوا

O my people, forgive and excuse,

Pardon the sinner and do not blame.

ولا تقولوا إنني مُعْتَدٍ

لكن إذا حُورِبتُ لا أرهَبُ

Do not say that I am an aggressor,

But if I am attacked, I do not cower.
