فلا تحسبنَّ البُعْدَ يمحو ودادكم

ولكنَّ هذا الشوق أصبحَ غالبي

Do not think distance erases your affection

Though yearning has overwhelmed me

ولست بناسٍ من أُناسٍ فضائلا

وإن كدَّرُوا بالبُعد صَفْوَ مَشاربي

I'm no man of superlative virtues

Though they mar with distance the purity of my aspirations

وعهدي قديماً لا يزالُ المدَى وإن

تَوَالَى على الهَمُّ مِن كل جانبِ

My pact remains unchanged though

Worry comes at me from every side

فأَلْزَمُ من طوق الحَمامِ مودَّتي

وأثبتُ رسماً من خطوط الرواجبِ

So I cling to the necklace of my devotion

And establish a precedent among principles of duty

ولستُ مِن القومِ الذين إذا نَأَى

مُصافيهم خانوا بودِّ المصاحبِ

I'm no man who if companions leave

Betrays the love of friends

وما أنا ممن إن خليلٌ هَفَا يكن

له قاعداً يمشى على حَدِّ قاضب

Nor am I one who if a boon companion wanders

Remains for him a sedentary traveling companion

أنا المرءُ لا جارى يُضامُ ولا أنا

مُظهرُ عَوْرات المُوالي المُقاربِ

I'm a man who wrongs no neighbor nor displays

The defects of dear friends

ألا أيها الشيخُ الوَفِيُّ الذي غدا

لنا خير أصحابٍ لنا وأقاربِ

O loyal elder become

The best of friends and kin

لقد عُدْتَ يا أهل الرعاية مُرسلا

عِتاباً لطيفاً معْ خليلِ مُعاتبِ

You who nurture have returned

Sending gentle rebuke with the blaming friend

لإبطائنا ردَّ الجوابِ إليكمُ

وتقصيرنا قِدْماً لرسم المآدبِ

For our tardy response

And lagging in the course of hospitality

نعم قد جرى التقصير منا وأنتم

تُقيلون زلاّتِ توالت لتائبِ

Yes, we were remiss while you

Overlook a succession of errors by the penitent

وما عندنا عُذْرٌ ولكن صفحكم

ينبِّئنا عن سَدِّ كل المثالبِ

We have no excuse but your pardon

Informs us the barring of all sins

فسالِمْ وسامح واعفُ واصفح وسُدْ وجُدْ

وطُلْ واحتمِلْ واغفِرْ وناصح لآيبِ

So greetings, forgive, pardon, excuse, close up, spend,

Endure, tolerate, absolve and advise the contrite

عليك سلامي كل حين وساعة

متَى لاح بَرْقٌ في خلال السحائبِ

My greetings always and at every hour

When light flashes amid the clouds

وما حَنَّ مشتاقٌ وما ناحَ طائرٌ

وما سارت العِيس الهِجانُ براكبِ

No longing one has sighed, no bird lamented

No caravan traveled with riders
