1. خليليّ إنَّ الهمَّ والحزنَ خيمّا

    بقلبي على رَغْمى فما الرأي فيهمَا

    My beloved, grief and sorrow have pitched their tents

    In my heart against my will, so what is your opinion of them?

  2. يريدانِ ألا يتركا لِيَ سلوة

    وأن يتركاني ناحلَ الجسمِ مسقما

    They want to leave me no solace

    And to leave my body lean and sickly

  3. فإن تسئداني شمِّرا وتقدَّما

    وإن كُنْتُما لا تسعداني فأحْجِمَا

    If they overpower me, roll up your sleeves and step forward

    And if you cannot make me happy, then refrain

  4. لقد أجمعا أمريهما وتخالَفا

    وقد جيَّشا جَيْشاً علينَا عَرَمْرَمَا

    They have agreed on their matter and disagreed

    And they have assembled against us a mighty army

  5. نلاقيهما بالذُّلِّ والصغر عنوةً

    أم الحرب أحرَى خوف أن تَنَدَّمَا

    Shall we confront them with humiliation and belittlement by force

    Or is war more appropriate, lest they may regret

  6. فأمَّارتِي بالجُبن قالتْ ليَ ارْعَوِى

    فلسنا بذِي عزٍّ لنرميَ مَنْ رَمَى

    My cowardice told me to be calm

    For we are not people of honor to retaliate against one who attacked

  7. ولسْنَا على البأساءِ أصحابَ قوةٍ

    ولسنا بأبناء الملوكِ لنِقدمَا

    Nor over calamities are we people of strength

    Nor are we the sons of kings to step forward

  8. وقال لي القلبُ استعدَّ فإنني

    أراني معدّاً في أمورِك قيمِّا

    But my heart told me: prepare, for I

    See myself appointed over your matters, resolute

  9. ألم ترني في النائباتِ أخا قوىً

    حَمُوى وفي البأساء عضْباً مُصمِّمَا

    Did you not see me in adversities a strong brother

    Ardent and in calamities biting my lips in determination

  10. ولا أتشكى للورَى من رزيَّةٍ

    رزئْت بها لو أَنَّ جِسْمي تَحطَّمَا

    And I do not complain to people about a misery

    With which I was afflicted, even if my body was shattered

  11. ألا قل لأهلِ الدهرِ والدهر إنني

    ثبوتٌ ولو رَضْوَى عَلَىَّ تَهَدَّمَا

    Say to the people of this world, and this world, that I

    Am steadfast even if it was content to see me collapse

  12. سواءٌ معي حربُ الزمانِ وسِلْمه

    إذا كان عندي الصبرُ لم أتألمَا

    It is the same to me, the war of time and its peace

    When patience is with me I feel no pain

  13. ولستُ أبالي إن سقتني صروفهُ

    كؤوسَ مُدَامٍ أو سقتنيَ عَأْتَمَا

    And I do not care if its twists serve me

    A cup of clear wine or murky water

  14. أنا المرءُ قلبي لا يراعُ بنبأةٍ

    ولا صوت ذى ضغن إذا ما تَهَمْهَمَا

    I am the man whose heart is not startled by any news

    Nor any voice of melody if it hummed

  15. ولا يطَّبيني حسنُ تغريد معبد

    ولا صوتُ شادٍ في الغصونِ تَرَنَّمَا

    The beautiful trilling of a warbler does not please me

    Nor the voice of a reveler in the branches murmuring

  16. ولم يشجني شوقاً فراقُ أحبةٍ

    إذا لم يذوقوا من فراقي تَنَدُّمَا

    Nor did the longing for the separation of loved ones stir me

    Unless they tasted from my separation regret

  17. وأقنعُ من دهري بأيسرِ بُلْغة

    إذا لم أجدْ يوماً سِوى التمر مَطْعَمَا

    And I am content with the easiest livelihood from my fate

    If I do not find a day except dates for food

  18. سأصرِفُ نفسي عن مطَامعَ جمةٍ

    وإن لم أجد لي قطُّ في الكفِّ درهمَا

    I will turn myself away from ambitious cravings

    Even if I never find a single dirham in my palm

  19. ومهما قضَى الرحمنُ لي بقضيةٍ

    رضيتُ بها طوعاً ولم أتظلمَا

    And whatever the Merciful decrees for me

    I will accept it willingly and not complain

  20. لِعلمِي بأني لستُ أملكُ درهماً

    ولم تنفع الشكوى فأدفعُها بِمَا

    For I know that I own not a single dirham

    And complaining does not benefit, so I ward it off with

  21. سأحنى لها ظَهْري وأحملُ ثقلها

    ولو حطمتَ مِنّي قناةً وأعظمَا

    I will bow my back to it and carry its burden

    Even if it shattered a canal from me and worse

  22. سأصبرُ صبراً يقصرُ الصبرُ دونَه

    إلى أنْ يصيحَ الصبرُ مني تألُّمَا

    I will have a patience the patience falls short of

    Until patience cries out from me in pain

  23. وإلا فلستُ الباسلَ البطل الذي

    تردَّى بأثوابِ الردَى وتعمَّمَا

    Otherwise, I am not the courageous hero

    Who is shrouded in the clothes of fortitude and temerity

  24. ولو قَصَّ مني الدهر ريشَ قوادِمي

    فلا أتشكَّى للعدوِّ فيبسَما

    And if fate plucked my wing feathers

    I will not complain to the enemy, lest he smiles

  25. ولا أتشكى للصديقِ مكاشِفاً

    فيبقى حزيناً لا يطيق تكلّمَا

    Nor complain to a friend, confiding

    So he remains sad, unable to speak

  26. سأسترُ سرى عن قريبٍ وشاسعٍ

    ولو أَنَّ قلبي بالسمومِ تسمَّما

    I will conceal my secret from both near and far

    Even if my heart was poisoned with toxins

  27. فكلٌّ له عمرٌ وللعمرِ غايةٌ

    إذا انتهتْ لم ينتفعْ بلعلّ مَا

    For each has a lifespan, and for lifespan an end

    When it finishes, dressing will not benefit, nor what has passed

  28. تمرسْتُ بالآفاتِ حتى ألفتها

    فلما دهتني لم تزدني تحلُّمَا

    I grew accustomed to misfortunes until I became friendly with them

    So when they visited me, they did not increase me in determination

  29. فها أنا ذَا ما شاء ربي فإنني

    لراضٍ بما أوتيتُ قدَّرَ أمْ نَمَا

    Am content with what I was given, little or much

    They say do not cry for the death of relatives

  30. يقولونَ لا تبكى لموتِ أقاربٍ

    أعندكَ قد صارَ البكاءُ محرَّمَا

    Is crying forbidden for you?

    So I said to them: No, but if it is beneficial

  31. فقلتُ لهم لا بلْ فإن كان نافِعاً

    بكيت على فِقدان أحبابنا دَمَا

    I cried for the loss of our loved ones with tears

    I cry for others while I know for certain

  32. أبكِي على غيري وإني لَعَالِمٌ

    يقينا بأني لاحقٌ من تَقَدَّمَا

    That I will follow those who went before me

    So if I have reason, I cry with tears

  33. فإن كنتُ ذَا عقلٍ فأبكى بعَبْرةٍ

    على عُمر ضيَّعته فتصرَّمَا

    For a lifetime I wasted until it crumbled

    And if I cry at times out of inevitable necessity

  34. فإن أبكه في بعض الأحاحايين لا غنىً

    فكمْ مسلمٍ منا بكى قبلُ مُسْلِمَا

    How many Muslims before me cried before being Muslim

    And if I cry for a beloved, Jacob before us

  35. وإن أبك محبوباً فيعقوبُ قبلنا

    بكى يوسفاً حتى أضرّ به الممَا

    Cried for Joseph until it harmed him

    And when I saw reason and heart agree

  36. ولما رأيتُ العقل والقلبَ أجمعَا

    على حرب أضدادٍ وللهِ سلّما

    To war against opposites - to God I submit

    I discarded weakness and inability, for a young man who

  37. نبذتُ الونَى والعجز عن فتى وقد

    جعلتُ جميلَ الصبر والفوز سلمّا

    Made patience and success his ladder

    I resolved, so we assembled armies of sorrow

  38. عَزَمتُ فجيَّشْنا جيوشاً من الأسَى

    هَزمْنا بها جيش الهموم تَجَشُّمَا

    We defeated with them the army of worries with perseverance

    So whoever is with God, God is with him

  39. فمن كانَ عند اللهِ فاللّهُ عندَه

    وفازَ بما يرجُوه فوزاً معظمَا

    And he succeeded in what he hoped, a great success

    We won and came out safe by His help

  40. ظفرنا وأُبْنا سَالمِين بعونه

    بنصرٍ عزيزٍ قد رجوناهُ قبل مَا

    With mighty victory we had hoped for before

    Whoever fears the Merciful, He will make for him refuge

  41. ومن يتقِ الرحمنَ يجعل له حمىً

    منيعاً ويرزقه التقى والتنعُّمَا

    Impenetrable, and provide him piety and bliss

    With the houris and young lads in a garden of paradise

  42. معَ الحورِ والولدان في روض جنة

    مقيما بها يُسقَى الرحيق المختّما

    Abiding therein, given to drink sealed nectar

    But if he disobeys Him intentionally and openly and does not repent

  43. وإن يَعْصِه عمداً جَهاراً ولم يتب

    ومات مصرّاً يَصْلَ نار جهنما

    And dies stubborn, he will reach the fire of Hell

    Tormented therein forever and endless, and does not

  44. يعذبُ فيها دائماً أبداً ولم

    يجدْ وَزَراً يأوى إليه فَيَسْلَما

    Find a single refuge to which he escapes and is safe

    So whoever prefers disobedience, this is his recompense

  45. فمن آثر العصيانَ هذا جزاؤهُ

    وكلُّ امرئٍ يجزي بما هو قَدَّمَا

    And every person is recompensed for what he forwarded

    I seek refuge in You, O God, from the evil of a refractory

  46. أعوذُ بك اللهمَّ من شرِّ ماردٍ

    غوىٍّ يرى إن مسَّنا الضر مَغْنَما

    Devil who sees harm as booty if it touches us

    And from the evil of obsessions that occur to my mind

  47. ومن شرِّ وسواسٍ ألمِّ بخاطرِي

    ومن همزاتِ للشياطينِ كلَّما

    And from the insinuations of devils whenever

    And forgiveness for a servant who admits his sin

  48. وعفواً لعبدٍ أقرَّ بذَنْبهِ

    وإنّك غفارُ الذنوبِ تكرُّمَا

    Surely You are Forgiver of sins, Most Generous

    Surely You are Of Forgiveness and Pardoning the one

  49. وإنكُ ذُو عفوٍ وصفحٍ عن الذي

    أقرَّ اعترافاً بعد ما كان أجرما

    Who confessed repentantly after what he did of wrongdoings

    And besides You are those of affection and companionship

  50. ودونَكمُ من ذِي ودادٍ بصحبةٍ

    حكت في حواشي الطِّرْسِ درّاً منظما

    Who related on the margins of prose, strung poems

    It is the nectar, rather sweeter to every hearer

  51. هيَ الشهدُ بلْ أحلى على كل سامع

    واشهى من الماء الزلالِ عل الظمَا

    And more delicious than fresh water to the thirsty

    It consoles the hearts of those who lost loved ones

  52. تسلِّى قلوب الفاقدين أحبّة

    وتنسى الوليد الوالد المكرِّمَا

    And makes the boy forget the honored father

    In that it purifies all filth

  53. على أنها تطهيرُ كل نجاسةٍ

    وتنفى عن القلب القذَى والتوهُّمَا

    And removes resentment and delusions from the heart

    And I called it the heart’s and eye’s solace

  54. وسميتها للقلبِ والعين سلوة

    وتقوية عند المصائبِ عندمَا

    And empowerment during tribulations whenever

    And I did not say about it of strength and encouragement

  55. وما قلت عنها من قوىً وتشجع

    وتزكية للنفسِ إلا تفهَّمَا

    And purification of the self except what I understood

    And my intention is only the pleasure of God alone

  56. وما نيتي إلا رضَى اللّهِ وحْدَه

    وسلوة عبدٍ للغُمومِ تَجشَّما

    And the solace of a servant who endured worries

    Come, study it at all times, for it

  57. ألا فادرسُوها كلَّ حينٍ فإنها

    تصير تعاويذاً وللقلبِ مَرْهَما

    Becomes talismans, and for the heart a salve

    It bequeaths in the heart of the coward boldness

  58. تؤرثُ في قلب الجبانِ تشَجعا

    ويزدادُ قلبُ الشخص منها تَعَلُّمَا

    And the heart of the person increases from it knowledge

    Whoever has reason, even if ignorant

  59. فَمْن كانَ ذَا عقلٍ وإن كانَ جاهِلاً

    يصيرُ إذا استولى عليها مُعَلّما

    Becomes from it, if he masters it, learned

    It has the forelocks of precedence in every adornment

  60. لها قصيبات السبقِ في كلِّ حليةٍ

    إذا حضرتْ فاقت كُميتاً وأَدْهَمَا

    If present, it surpasses scarlet and darker

    If you miss it one day, you would think it is

  61. إذا خلتها يوماً توهمتَ أنها

    ملاءة نورٍ قد توافت من السَّمَا

    The radiance of light that poured from the sky

    Or the houris from the gardens of Eden descended

  62. أو الحور من جناتِ عدنٍ تنزلت

    جزاؤُكم مِن فعلِ خيرٍ تقدّمَا

    Your reward for good deeds you forwarded

    And pray to the God of the Throne however long the breeze blew

  63. وصلِّ إلهَ العرشِ ما هبَّت الصَّبَا

    على أحمدٍ خيرِ الأنامِ وسلِّما

    Upon Ahmad, best of mankind, and send peace upon him.
