أحِبَّ أهلَ العقول مِن الرعايا

بلا ريثٍ وكن لهمُ سميعا

Love the wise men of the people

Without delay and be a good listener to them

وكن قدَّامهم في كلِّ أمرٍ

تكن في كلّ مرتبةٍ رفيعا

And be ahead of them in every matter

Be elevated in every position

ولا تغضبْ فأنت رئيسُ قومٍ

وشَاورْهم تكن حصنا منيعَا

And do not get angry for you are the chief of a people

And consult them, be an impregnable fortress

وإن نادَوْك في الْجُلَّى أجبْهم

بلا ريثٍ وكن لهمُ شَفيعَا

And if they call you openly, answer them

Without delay and be an intercessor for them

وإن أمرٌ بدا التعجيلُ فيه

فعجِّلْهُ بلا لُبْثٍ سريعَا

And if an order appears to be urgent

Hasten it without delay, quickly

وإن أمرٌ بدَا التأخيرُ خيراً

فأخرْه وكنْ فيه مَنُوعَا

And if an order appears best to be delayed

Postpone it and forbid it

وسرُّك عن أولى الألباب صُنْه

فكيفَ بمنْ يصيرُ لهُ مذيعَا

And keep your secret from the wise

So what of one who makes it spread

وإن أعطاكَ سرّاً ذو ودادٍ

فأقبرْه وحاذِرْ أن يضيعَا

And if a loving friend gives you a secret

Bury it and beware it gets lost

فإن أنشيتَ هاجَ الشرُّ فيهم

وإن أخفيتَ أرضيتَ الجميعَا

For if you leak it, evil spreads amongst them

And if you hide it, you please everyone

فلا تغْررْك ألسنةٌ عِذابٌ

تدُوفُ وراءها سُمّاً نقيعَا

So do not be fooled by slanderous tongues

That drip behind them lethal poison

وإن داراكَ من عاداك دارِى

ومن والاكَ والِ المستطيعَا

And if one who opposes you approaches me

Befriend the one who befriends you when able

وإن أحدٌ غضبتَ عليه فاغفرْ

له زلاتهِ تكنِ المُطِيعَا

And if you get angry at someone, forgive

His slip and be obedient
