يا نفسُ أنتِ محادِدَهْ

بطبائعٍ متضادِدَهْ

O soul, you are an adversary

Of contradictory natures

وعدلْتِ عن قولِ النصيحِ

وما اتَّبَعْتِ مقاصدَهْ

And you turned away from good advice

And did not follow its purposes

فاستقبِلي لا تُدْبِرِي

عنِّي فأنتِ مبُاعدَهْ

So face towards me, do not turn away

From me, for you are distancing

لابدَّ يوماً أنتِ في

ه إلى المقابر قاصدَهْ

One day you must, inevitably

Head to the graves, intending

يا نفسُ توبي وارجعي

لا تُدْبِرِي مُتباعِدَهْ

O soul, repent and return

Do not distance, withdrawing

لا تعزُيى كُوني معي

في الحالتين مُساعِدَهْ

Do not despair, be with me

In both states, helping

كوني معي في كل ما

يُرضى الإلهَ مُجاهِدَهْ

Be with me in all that

Pleases the God, struggling

واستأنسى ثم اصبري

فالصبر فيه فائِدَهْ

And be comfortable, then be patient

For in patience is benefit

خافي العقابَ وحاذري

إبليسنا ومكايِدَهْ

Fear the punishment and beware

Of Satan and his schemes

ودعي الرذائل واتّقي

ربّاً وكوني ساجِدَهْ

And leave evil and fear

God, bowing in worship

وتنبَّهي وتيقّني

لو مِتُّ أنك عائِدَهْ

And wake up and be certain

That if I die, you will return

لا تسلكي طرقَ المها

وي والمساعي الفاسِدَهْ

Do not follow the ways of passion

And the corrupt endeavors

فتجارةُ الإفسادِ في

سوق المكارِم كاسِدَهْ

For the trade of corruption in

The market of virtues is bankrupt

ومتى فتىً نالَ المعا

لي لا تكوني حاسِدَهْ

And when a youth attains glory

Do not be envious of him

فإذا أطعتِ أقمتِ في

جناتِ عدنٍ خالِدَهْ

For if you obey, you will reside

In the gardens of Eden, eternal

تجنين من ثمراتها

من يانع أو جامِدَهْ

Reaping of its fruits

Ripe or unripe

فيها نعيمٌ دائمٌ

تحت الظلالِ البارِدَهْ

In it is lasting bliss

Beneath cool shades

مع حُورِ عِينٍ خُرَّدٍ

بيضٍ حسانٍ ناهِدَهْ

With fair maidens

With dark eyes, gazing

كاللؤلؤ المكنونِ في

سُرُرٍ تُرَى مُتسانِدَهْ

Like hidden pearls

On beds seen adjacent

فكُلى هنيئاً واشربي

من أنهُرٍ مُتطارِدَهْ

So enjoy and drink

From rivers rushing

والطلحُ والرُّمَّانُ في

أغصانها مُتناضِدَهْ

The jujube and pomegranate

On its branches clustered

فالوصف يقصُرُ عن صفا

تِ نعيمهم والمائِدَهْ

Description falls short of the virtues

Of their bliss and the feast

وإذا عَصِيتِ هَويتِ في

قعر الجحيمِ الواقِدَهْ

And if you disobey, you will fall

In the pit of Hell, blazing

ماذا يقولُ الواصفو

نَ لها وما هي بائِدَهْ

What can describers say

Of it, and it will not diminish

لو أطنبوا في وَصْفِها

دهرا فكانت زايِدَهْ

If they elaborated describing it

For ages, it would increase

يا نفسُ هذي غفلةٌ

عنها وإنك وافِدَهْ

O soul, this is negligence

Of it, though you will arrive

مالي أردِّد عيبَهم

مع خالدٍ أو خالِدَهْ

Why do I repeat their flaws

With Khalid or Khalidah

أفما ترين عيوبَ نفسِ

ك كالجبال الراكِدَهْ

Do you not see the flaws of your soul

Like mountains piled up

وأراكِ تغتابين ك

لَّ أخي صفاءٍ عامِدَهْ

And I see that you backbite

Every brother of untainted pillars

أفنجحد الفعلَ الذي

تأتي وأنتِ الشاهِدَهْ

Shall we deny the deed

That you do while you are witnessing

قالت لسانك موضع

الغيباتِ وهْو القاعِدَهْ

Your tongue said the place

Of guesses, while it is sitting

قال اللسانُ محرِّكي

قلبٌ تبعتُ مقاصدَهْ

The tongue said my mobilizer

Is a heart that followed its purposes

والقلب قال فلستُ أعل

م جمعَ شملِ الشارِدَهْ

And the heart said I do not know

To gather the dispersed's gathering

العينُ ثم العين تبّاً

للموارد واردَهْ

The eye, then the eye, shame

On the destinations, arriving

قال العيونُ محرِّكي

أذنٌ وإنِّي راقِدَهْ

The eyes said my mobilizer

Is an ear, though I am sleeping

والأذن قالت مُرْسِلي

قلبٌ فِصرْتُ القائِدَهْ

And the ear said my sender

Is a heart, so I became the leader

قد صار كلٌّ يدَّعي

دعوَى وليست فائِدَهْ

Each has claimed a claim

And it is not beneficial

قالوا تعالوا نحتكمْ

فالجسمُ قاضي القاصِدَهْ

They said come let us arbitrate

For the body is the judge of purposes

فرضوا جميعاً بالقضا

والنارُ مأْوَى الجاحِدَهْ

So they unanimously accepted the judgement

And Hell is the abode of the deniers

فقَضى بأن القلب سل

طانٌ عليهم قاعِدَهْ

So it judged that the heart is a sultan

Over them, presiding

فالقلبُ سلطانُ الجوا

رح كلِّها يا حامِدَهْ

For the heart is the sultan of all

Emotions, O praiser

فمتى بدا منه فسا

دٌ فالرعايا فاسِدَهْ

So when corruption appears from it

The subjects are corrupt

ومتى بدا منه صلا

حٌ فالرعايا راشِدَهْ

And when reform appears from it

The subjects are righteous

فالحمدُ لله الذي

فتح العيون الراقِدَهْ

So praise be to God who

Opened the sleeping eyes
