بدِين الهوى إِن صحَّ عَقدُك في الهوى

أعن ملَلٍ في الهجر أم كاشحٍ أَغرَى

If your love pact was true, would you complain of boredom from estrangement or a tender glance that made you fall deeper in love?

Rarely does one fulfill a wish of love,

ألا قَلَّما يقضِي من الحبِّ حاجةً

مُعنّىً بنفسٍ عُلِّقتْ حاجةً أُخرَى

Preoccupied with a soul that ties another wish.

I swore if indifference was due to betrayal,

حلفتُ لئن كان الجفاء لغَدرةٍ

لقد أبصرتْ عينايَ من عينكِ الغدْرا

My eyes have seen betrayal in yours.

I say something endearing and you shut your cheek,

أقول لطيفٍ منكِ وَسَّدتُ خدَّه

يمينِيَ لمَّا جلَّ عن يدِيَ اليسرَى

My right hand swore when the left fell short.

Consider me who saw the estrangement of one night,

نحولي الذي عاينتَ من هجر ليلةٍ

فما ظنُّها بالجسم لو هَجرَتْ عشرا

So what would you expect of my body if you abandoned me for ten?
