أفاق بها من طول سكرته الدهرُ

وفُكَّت أمانٍ فيك ماطلها الأسرُ

He awoke from his long intoxication

And the pledges in you were undone after being fulfilled

وأسمحتِ الأيام بعد حِرانها

ونهنهها الوعظُ المكرَّرُ والزجرُ

And the days became lenient after their bitterness

And repeated preaching and warning softened them

حملت تمادي غيّها ولَجاجِها

على غاربٍ لم يُدمه الندبُ والعَقْرُ

They carried their excessiveness and stubbornness

To one who grief and estrangement did not last long for him

نَهوض إذا خار الفَقار نجت به

جوارحُ صُمٌّ كلُّها في السرى ظَهرُ

When the backbone weakened, the paralyzed limbs were saved

By it, all deaf in ability, but the back remained

وأرعيتها الإمهال علماً بأنها

إليك وإن طال التنازعُ تضطرُّ

And I gave it respite, knowing that it will be forced to you

No matter how long the conflict takes

وما فات مطلوبٌ سرى الجد خلفه

وضامِنُه العمرُ المؤخَّر والصبرُ

What is missed has a serious quest behind it

Guaranteed by the rest of age and patience

وقد كنتُ أستبطي القضاءَ وسعيَه

وأعذُله فيما ينوب وما يعرو

I used to evade fate and its purpose

And pardon it for what it brings and takes away

ويُقنِطني ما يستقيم ويلتوي

ويُقبِل من أمر عليك ويزوَرُّ

It makes me desperate, what goes right and crooked

And what it makes accessible to you and denies

ولم أدر أن الله أخّر آيةً

له بك في إظهار معجزها سرُّ

I did not know that Allah delayed a sign

Through you, revealing its miracle secretly

وأنك مذخور لإحياء دولةٍ

إذا هي ماتت كان في يدك النشرُ

And that you are preserved to revive a state

When it dies, through you lies its revival

تعاورها شلّ الغواة وطردُهم

تساق على حكم الغِوارِ وتُجترُّ

The transgressions of the tyrants attack it

It is pulled to the rule of the ignorant and dragged

لها جانب من خوفهم متسهِّلٌ

وآخر يرجو أن تَداركه وعرُ

It has an aspect of their fear being lenient

And another that hopes you will save it

مزعزعَة أيدي سَبَا بين معشرٍ

همُ غمطوا النعمى وغمطهُمُ كفرُ

Shaken are the hands of youth between a group

Who suppressed blessings and their suppression is disbelief

ولم أر كالعبد الموسَّم آمناً

يروَّع منه ربُّه الملك الحرُّ

I have not seen a safe branded slave

Feared by his free Lord, the King

محافرُ أكدت في أكفٍّ تخاذلت

فكان عليها حَثْو ما فَحص الحفرُ

Excavations confirmed in failing palms

So urging them was fruitless, the digging prevailed

ولما نبت بالملك دارُ قرارِهِ

ومال عليه منهم الفاجرُ الغِرُّ

When the house of its stability was firmly rooted

And the wicked immoral leaned toward it

وسُرِّحَ من مكنونه الخوفُ حائماً

عليه وأبدى من نواجذه الشرُّ

Fear roaming over it showed its fangs

And the evils in its outbursts showed

وكوشف حتى لم تحصِّنْه رِقْبةٌ

ولم يبق بابٌ للحياء ولا سِترُ

It was exposed until no neck protected it

No door for shyness or veil remained

أتتك به الظلماءُ يركب ظهرَها

على ثقةٍ من غيِّه أنك الفجرُ

The dark brought it to you riding its back

Trusting its excess that you are the dawn

يناديك قم هذا أوان انتهازها

فشمِّر لها قد أمكن الخائضَ البحرُ

Calling you, rise, this is the chance to take it

So roll up your sleeves, the sea is ready for the swimmer

فما ضرّه خذل الذين وراءه

وقدامه منك الحميَّةُ والنصرُ

It did not hurt him, the failure of those behind him

For in front of him are your zeal and victory

تلافيتها بالرأي شنعاءَ لم تَجُزْ

بظنٍّ ولم يُنفَقْ على مثلها فكرُ

You resisted its horridness that no thought

Or money were spent on the like of it

دعاك لها يا واحداً وهو واحد

فأصرخه من نصحك الجحفلُ المَجْرُ

He called you alone and he was alone

So shout at him - may your sincere adviser be rewarded

وفي الناس من تسري له عزماتُه

بعيداً ولم يُشكَمْ حِصانٌ ولا مُهرُ

Among the people are those whose resolutions lead him

Far, and neither a horse nor a donkey were mounted

وأعزلُ ما مدَّ السلاحَ بَنانُه

تَلاوذُ من فتْكاته البيضُ والسمرُ

I seek refuge from the one whose spear's blade

White and black seek refuge from its stabs

وما كان إلا أن وفيتَ بعهده

وأسميتَ حتى مات من خوفك الغدرُ

Except that you fulfilled your covenant

And named him until the fear of you killed betrayal

فكنت عصا موسى هوت فتلقَّفت

بآيتها البيضاءِ ما أفَكَ السِّحْرُ

You were like Moses’ staff falling and taking

What magic did not undo, with its white sign

طلعت لنا بالملك شمساً جديدةً

أعادت بياضَ الحقّ والحقُّ مغبَرُّ

You rose upon the kingdom a new sun

That restored the honesty of truth when it is dusty

ترحَّلَ في يومٍ من الشرّ عابسٍ

وعاد وقد أعداه من وجهك البشرُ

One gloomy day of evil departed frowning

And returned with your face giving it glad tidings

أضاءت لنا من بعد ظلمتها الدجى

فقلنا الوزير القاسميّ أو البدرُ

It illuminated for us after its darkness, gloom

We said: Is it the minister Al-Qasimi or the full moon?

وكم مثلها من غُمّةٍ قد فرجتُمُ

ومن دولةٍ هيضت وأنتم لها جَبْرُ

And how many times did you relieve such gloom

And revive a state that stumbled while you are its healer

دجَتْ ما دجت ثم انجلت وسيوفُكم

كواكبُ فيها أو وجوهكم الغُرُّ

However depressed it became, then it cleared with your swords

Being stars wherein are your faces and blossoms

بكم رُبّ هذا الملكُ طفلاً وناشئاً

فما ضمَّه حصنٌ سواكم ولا حِجرُ

Through you this kingdom grew as a child and a youth

No fortress protected it but you all and no stone

وفيكم نمت أعراقه وفروعه

ورفَّت على أغصانه الورَقُ الخُضْرُ

In you its branches and offshoots grew

And leaves greened upon its branches

لكم فيه أيامٌ يزيد بياضُها

نُصوعاً وأيامُ الأعادي بها حُمرُ

For you are days whose brightness increases

Making white while the enemies’ days in it are red

يداولُ منكم واحداً بعد واحد

فيُرضيه ما تُملي التجاربُ والخُبرُ

It alternates among you, one after the other

Satisfying what trials and experience dictate

وما تمَّ أمرٌ لستُمُ من وُلاتِهِ

وليس لكم نهيٌ عليه ولا أمرُ

No command was fulfilled unless you were among its governors

Nor do you have a prevention or order upon it

لكم سورةُ المجدِ التليدِ وفيكُمُ

طرائفُ من يفخرْ بها فهِيَ الفخرُ

For you is the antique charm of glory and in you are

Its subtleties that one would pride in boasting about

فيوماً أميراً سيفُه ويمينُه

حمى جانبيه أو حبا الدمُ والقَطرُ

One day a prince whose sword and right hand

Protected its sides or loved spilt blood

ويوماً وزيراً صدرُه ولسانه

كما اشترط القرطاسُ واقترحَ الصدرُ

Another day a minister whose mind and tongue

Fulfilled what paper initiated and the mind proposed

هو الشرفُ العِجليُّ يَصدَعُ فَجرُهُ

وتُغني عن الدنيا كواكبُهُ الزُّهرُ

He is quick glorious fame whose dawn dazzles

And its blossoms suffice over worldly stars

ويستوقف الأسماعَ منشورُ ذكرِهِ

إذا وصم الناسَ الأحاديثُ والذكرُ

His name would stop the hearing if people

Spoke and remembered

فلا يعدَم الدهرُ الفقيرُ إليكُمُ

فتىً منكُمُ في جوده يُنسَخُ الفقرُ

So time will not lack needing one of you

A lad among you whose generositytranscends poverty

ولا زال مغمورٌ من الفضل دارسٌ

يعود به غضَّاً نوالُكُمُ الغَمْرُ

Nor one obscured in knowledgeeffortlessly working

Only for your deep knowledge to return him thriving

ومُلِّيتَ أنتَ ثوبَ عزٍّ سحبتَهُ

ولا يُبلِهِ سَحْبٌ عليك ولا جَرُّ

You dressed the gown of might pulling it

None can wear it like you, undisgraced

يطول إلى أن لا يُرَى ما يطوله

ويمتدّ فيه العمرُ ما حسُنَ العمرُ

Enduring until the enduring ends

And life in it is beautifully enduring

وعذراءَ بكراً من عوارفِ ربّها

حُبيت بها ما كلّ عارفةٍ بِكرُ

An unmarried chaste one from the gnostics of her Lord

You were matched with her and not every chaste is matched

رآك الإمامُ كفئَها وقِوامَها

فسيقت وما إلا علاك لها مَهْرُ

The Imam saw you as her equal and pillar

So she was led while none deserved her dowry but you

لبست بها تاجاً وحصناً حصينةً

وإن لم يصغها لا الحديدُ ولا التِّبرُ

She wore a crown and an unbreachable fortress

That would not fit her, neither iron nor gems

تمنَّى رجالٌ أن يكونوا مكانَها

ففاتت ولم يقدِرْ على مثلها قَدرُ

Men wished to be in her place

But none could attain the like of her

مشيتَ على بُسطِ الخلافة واطئاً

مكاناً تمنّاه من الفَلَك النَّسرُ

You walked on the caliphate’s platforms secure

A place aspired by the prominent stars

مكاناً زليقاً لو سواك يقومُهُ

هوت رِجلُهُ أو ظَنَّ أن الثرى جَمرُ

A delicate position - had it not been you -

Its walker would slip or think the land is burning coal

وقلب شجاع القلبِ والفمِ باسطاً

لسانَك حيث القولُ محتشمٌ نَزرُ

Courageous of heart and mouth, extending

Your tongue where speech is scarce

ولما وَعدتَ بالطروق تشوَّف ال

سريرُ إلى رؤياك واشتاقَك القصرُ

When you promised to return, the throne

Yearned to see you and the palace missed you

وودّ وليّ الأمر كلَّ صبيحة

لعينيه عن إقبال وجهك تفترُّ

The guardian of authority wished every dawn

For his eyes relief upon seeing your face first

مزايا إذا خاف الكَفورُ سراحَها

فعندك فيها أن يقيِّدك الشكرُ

Advantages, if the ungrateful feared losing them

For you, gratitude would be enough to bind you

وقد كنتُ أرجوها وأزجرُ طيرَها

بفألٍ قضى أن لا يخيبَ له زجرُ

I used to wish for them and discourage its bird

With bad omens destined not to fail discouraging

وأَنذُر إن أدركتُها فيك منسكاً

أقوم به فاليوم قد وجبَ النذرُ

And threaten - if attained through you - to fulfill a vow

Today the vow became due

وفاءً عصى أن يستحيلَ به النوى

وعهداً تعالى أن يغيِّره الهجرُ

A fulfilment disobeyed to transform intent through it

A covenant exalted not to be changed by estrangement

وشفعاً لأسلافٍ لديك شفيعها

مطاع وقاضيها له الحكم والأمرُ

An intercession for ancestors who have you as their intercessor

Obeyed and the judge for them with power and command

وإن مسني لذع الجفاء وطال بي

فربّ جفاءٍ في مدارجه عُذرُ

If the harshness of estrangement hurts me and prolongs

There is an excuse for every estrangement in its phases

وقد أمكن الإنصافَ والجودَ فرصةٌ

إذا أعوزتْ في العسر قام بها اليسرُ

Equity and generosity are conveniently possible

When lacking in hardship, affluence makes up for it

وهل ضائعٌ حقيّ ومجدُك شاهدٌ

بفضلي وسلطاني على مالِكَ الشعرُ

Is my right lost? Your glory bears witness

To my merits and my power over the hair's splitter

أعد نظرةً تشجي الزمان بريقه

يراشُ بها المحصوص أو يُجبر الكسرُ

Reconsider some radiance that dazzles time

The narrowed would widen through it or the broken heal

ووفِّر لها أعواض ما فات إنها

غنيمةُ مجدٍ يُستقَلُّ بها الوفرُ

Make up for the past, it is spoils of glory

Through which abundance can barely be attained

فما زلتُ ألقَى العُدمَ جذلانَ مهوِناً

بما جرَّ علماً أنّ رأيك لي ذخرُ

I continued to face annihilation humbled
