1. ما المجدُ إلا بالعزيمة فاعزِمِ

    من لم يغامر لم يفز بالمغنمِ

    Glory is naught but through resolve, so be resolute

    He who dares not take risks shall not gain spoils

  2. كم ذا القُنوع بوقفة المردودِ عن

    بابِ العلاء وجِلسةِ المتظلِّمِ

    How many a contented man halted at refusal

    From the door of eminence and the council of the wronged

  3. متأخراً بالفضل أُبخَسُ حَقَّه

    وأُرَى مكانَ العاجز المتقدّمِ

    Delayed in merit, his right is diminished

    And shown as the place of the incapable, though ahead

  4. حتى كأنّ خليجَ قلبي ليس في

    صدري ولا سيفَ انتصاري في فمي

    As though the gulf of my heart is not in

    My chest, nor my sword of victory in my mouth

  5. قد كان يرتاب الغبيُّ بفطنتي

    ويريبني بالعجز فرطُ تلوُّمي

    The foolish used to doubt my wisdom

    And suspect me of incapacity, so very gloomy

  6. ومشى إلىّ الضيمُ مشيَ تسلُّطٍ

    وطُماعةٍ في عفّتي وتسلُّمي

    And injustice marched towards me arrogantly

    With greediness for my chastity and submission

  7. وأصاتت الأيامُ بي قم تحتشمْ

    وأشارت العلياء خاطرْ تعظُمِ

    And time humbled me when I was proud

    And the eminent hinted to esteem

  8. إن كنت تُنكر يا زماني جلستي

    فلأنهضنَّ لها نهوضَ مصمِّمِ

    If you, my time, deny my status

    I shall rise for it with determined resolve

  9. ولتدعونّي ثائراً مستيقظاً

    إن كنتَ أمسِ دعوتني في النوَّمِ

    And you called me slumbering yesterday

    I shall shake the fanciness off my shoulders

  10. ولأنْفُضنَّ من الهويني منكِبي

    نفضَ العُقاب سقيطَ طَلٍّ معتمِ

    Like a hawk shaking off the remnants of bonds

    And I shall mount you riding from my determination

  11. ولألقينَّك راكباً من عزمتي

    جرداء تفتح في الطريق المبهمِ

    Bare, opening up the ambiguous path

    In the rider’s hand a bridle of a brave knight

  12. في كفِّ راكبها عِنانُ مسمِّحٍ

    في السبق غرّةُ وجهه لم تُلطَمِ

    Whose face in racing has not been blemished

    His whip and bridle suffice him

  13. يكفيه وزعةُ سوطِهِ ولجامه

    ما مس في فخذيه إثر المحزمِ

    The steeds rush as if maddened

    Plunging downhill from the mountain ridge

  14. تنضو الجياد كأنها ملمومةٌ

    هوت انحداراً من فَقار يلملمِ

    Beneath the darkness, a penetrating comet from them

    Jinn of calamities have not been pelted with its like

  15. تحت الدجى منها شهاب ثاقبٌ

    جِنّ الخطوب بمثله لم تُرجَمِ

    Panting after the pursuer as though it is

    A spark fallen from flint onto tender

  16. تهفو على أثر الطرادِ كأنها

    قبسٌ تهافتَ عنَ زنادٍ مصرمِ

    I traverse with it the tracts of every smooth plain,

    An unsullied virgin, never trodden and foreign

  17. تجتاب بي أجواز كلِّ تنوفة

    عذراءَ ما وُطئتْ وخَرقٍ أعجمِ

    And if I keep the star safe in it I am not confused

    What trace in it was lost or what landmark

  18. وإذا حفِظتُ النجم فيها لم أُبَل

    ما ضاع من أثرٍ بها أو مُعلَمِ

    And I have ridden to glorious quests before it

    The backs of valor, whether I was safe or not

  19. ولقد ركبت إلى المآرب قبلها

    ظهرَ الخطار سلمتُ أو لم أسلَمِ

    I gain glory with life, and he who dislikes

    The love of life, thereby is disgraced or wronged

  20. أبتاع عزّاً بالحياة ومَن يَمِلْ

    حبُّ الحياة به يُهَنْ أو يُظْلَمِ

    Amongst youths who share their waters

    With companions, from the clouds' overflowing udders

  21. في فتيةٍ يتصافنون مياهَهم

    بالراح من حَلْب السحاب المصرِمِ

    And if their provision runs out

    The very well-endowed amongst them turns destitute

  22. وإذا عيابُ الزاد فيهم أصفرتْ

    كان المموِّلُ كلّه للمعدمِ

    Jostling to mount, some bored of weariness

    While others unsatisfied, persisted

  23. متهافتين على الرحال فناكسٌ

    سئم الكَلالَ وناصبٌ لم يسأمِ

    And the night wraps them in a sheltered corner

    From us, and the darkness spreads them in a sheltered corner

  24. والليلُ يطويه السُّرى في مخرِمٍ

    عنّا وينشره الدجى في مخرِمِ

    And the star in the setting horizon is a

    White banner, or the cheek of a restrained steed

  25. والنجم في الأفق المغرّب رايةٌ

    بيضاءَ أو خدّ الحصان الملجَمِ

    Until we attained glory in its verses

    And honor in the custom of the ahead

  26. حتى صبَحنا المجدَ في أبياته

    والعزَّ في عاديّةِ المتقدِّمِ

    Noble, so that injustice is ashamed of our honors

    While our appearance is on a crumbling decline

  27. كرماء يمسي الضيمُ من أعراضنا

    وشخوصنا في مَزلَقٍ متهدّمِ

    As though our long arms were suspended

    From the minister’s rope, pledged and forbidden

  28. فكأن أيديَنا الطوالَ علِقْن من

    حبل الوزير بذمةٍ وتحرُّمِ

    And as though our delight is the cheer of his face

    And our purpose from attaining him is the allotted share

  29. وكأنّ مَسرانا بُغرَّة وجهه

    ومَرادَنا من نَيله المتقسّمِ

    The opinion of the discerning advisor was not

    The cleavage of the bottle before him with filler

  30. شعَبَ الممالك رأيُ طَبّ لم يكن

    صدعُ الزجاجة قبله بملأَّمِ

    Manifest on its blemishes, accustomed

    To not obeying the steadfast or restrained

  31. جَلَّى على غُلَوائه متعوّدٌ

    لم يجرِ طاعةَ حازم أو مُلجِمِ

    Proceeding, seeing that delay is disgrace

    The eminent has not glimpsed the face of ahead

  32. ماضٍ يرى أن التأخُّرَ سُبّةٌ

    ما آنستْ علياه وجهَ تقدُّمِ

    The banner fluttered over the cheekiest of foreheads

    Good tidings of spoils before the encounter

  33. خَفَق اللواءُ على أغَرَّ جبينُه

    قبلَ اللقاء بشارةٌ بالمغنمِ

    It meets the canal with an outpour from his sword

    And his tongue’s edge increasingly dispraises

  34. يصلُ القناةَ بفضلة من زَنده

    ويزيد حدُّ لسانه في اللَّهذمِ

    And the kingdom’s might from it extends with an arm

    Delving ahead of the destroying swords

  35. وامتدّ باعُ الملك منه بساعدٍ

    متوغِّلٍ قبل الحسامِ المخذمِ

    Turbans are adorned when he leans back resting

    And accounts dwindle at the time he sleeps

  36. تُزهَى الدسوت إذا احتبى متوسداً

    وتضاءلُ الأحسابُ ساعةَ ينتمي

    And he returns the bosom of time gently

    Its fingers grazed by the sheep’s soft wool

  37. ويردُّ في صدر الزمان براحةٍ

    تُزري أناملها بنوء المِرزمِ

    So white the bridle greens at its touch

    And the forehead of the swarthy steed grays

  38. بيضاء يخضرّ العنانُ بمسّها

    وتَشيبُ ناصية الحِصان الأدهمِ

    And if politics hustled, it is backed

    By his opinion with the side of a sturdy mountain

  39. وإذا تدوفعت السياسةُ أُسندت

    من رأيه بجنُوب طودٍ مُعصمِ

    And if kings called to spend their pure wealth

    Supplication for the kingdom would be most protected

  40. وإذا الملوك دعَوا بخالص مالهم

    كان الدعاء مؤيّدَ المُلكِ اسلَمِ

    They name the best title-bearer and assign to him

    The crown of pride on the anointed’s forehead

  41. يَسِمون خيرَ ملقَّبٍ وضعوا له

    تاجَ الفخارِ على جبين المِيسمِ

    And they delegate their affairs to him kindly

    Heeding their incident’s rights as the elder statesman

  42. ويقلّدون أمورهم متعطّفاً

    يرعى لحادثِهم حقوقَ الأقدمِ

    Good for the countries’ ailments if injustice crept in them

    An unresolved affliction spreads

  43. طَبّاً بأدواء البلاد إذا سرت

    للجور فيها عِلّةٌ لم تُحسمِ

    Mother of ministries birthed him a horseman

    After difficult labor and isolation

  44. جاءت به أمُّ الوزارة فارساً

    ولدته بعدَ تعنُّسٍ وتعقُّمِ

    Well-trained, reviving its original traditions

    And detailing what had not been detailed

  45. متمرّناً أحيا دروس رسومها ال

    أولى وزاد فخطَّ ما لم يُرسَمِ

    He masters the ministry’s pens, served by the pens

    With a thousand crowned led by a turban

  46. فندت ظُبا الأقلام يخدُمها الظّبا

    ويقادُ ألفُ متوَّج بمعمَّمِ

    God grace you, and the canal divides by you

    And horsemen against horsemen hurl

  47. لله درّك والقنا يزَعُ القنا

    بك والفوارسُ بالفوارسِ ترتمي

    And the steeds stumble in the fray with their heads

    Covered in suits of mail darker than dark

  48. والخيل تعثرُ في الوغى برؤوسها

    متبرقعاتٍ بالعَجاج الأقتَمِ

    And over your frenzied nerves is composure

    And over war’s foolishness is composed manner

  49. وعليك من طيش الحلوم سكينةٌ

    وعلى سفاه الحرب ثوبُ تحلُّمِ

    And the trails of trains are reckoned by its cargo

    Steps of water in the lake, starry

  50. ومُفاضةُ الأذيالِ يُحسَب متنُها

    أدراجَ ماء في الغديرِ منمنَمِ

    Haughty, its tale slides with slick tongues

    Slick as granite on a starry night

  51. رتقاء يزلَق بالأسنّة سردُها

    زلَقَ الصفاةِ بليلةً بالمنسِمِ

    No cowardice touched you, rather

    They ruled by merit for the brave

  52. ما زرّها جبن عليكَ وإنما

    حكموا بفضل الحزم للمستلئمِ

    How many necks have you severed with your sword that were not

    So when you triumphed, pitied those who did not pity

  53. كم قدتَ من عُنُقٍ بسيفك لم يُقدْ

    فإذا ظفِرتَ رحِمتَ من لم يَرحَمِ

    And if bitter refusal said to you “take revenge”

    Your noble manners said “nay, be forebearing”

  54. وإذا الإباء المرُّ قال لك انتقم

    قالت خلائقك الكرام بل احلُمِ

    A law of pardon you alone uphold of its creed

    A virtue none before you had yet ahead

  55. شرعٌ من العفو انفردتَ بدينه

    وفضيلةٌ لسواك لم تَتَقدّمِ

    So that the innocent may well prefer

    To turn himself to you despite the criminal's reputation

  56. حتى لقد ودّ البريء لو أنه

    أدلى إليك بفضل جاهِ المجرمِ

    The land is not reformed but by an unbiased

    Arbiter who quenches with two cups, its sweet and bitter

  57. لا تصلح الدنيا بغير معدّلٍ

    يَسقِي بكأسَيْ شهدها والعلقمِ

    Wakeful, spreading a charming hand generously

    Be it for their rights from spoils or debts

  58. يقظان يبسُط راحةً أخَّاذةً

    بحقوقها من مغنمٍ أو مغرَمِ

    If it floods, it is a spring of dew

    Or if parched, it is a spring of blood

  59. إن سيل رفداً فهي يَنبوعُ الندى

    أو سيم ضيماً فهي ينبوعُ الدمِ

    And people are either ambitious or ascetic

    So master them by sword or coins

  60. والناس إما راغبٌ أو راهبٌ

    فاملكهُمُ بالسيف أو بالدرهَمِ

    Time laughed at you after its sullenness

    And your justice illuminated the gloomy times

  61. ضحِكتْ بك الأيامُ بعد عبُوسها

    وأضاء عدلك في الزمان المظلمِ

    And every intractable virgin humbled herself to you

    Thereby neglecting men, and mothers

  62. وتذلَّلتْ لك كلُّ بكرٍ صعبةٍ

    في الملك فارَكتِ الرجالَ وأيِّمِ

    How much bounty you retroactively attached

    To previous ones, and strung on a necklace

  63. كم نعمةٍ لك ألحقتْ متأخّراً

    بالسابقات وحلّقتْ بمحوِّمِ

    And gifts you exceedingly spent without

    Matching it after with blame of the regretful

  64. وعطيّةٍ أسرفتَ فيها لم تعُدْ

    في إثرها بلواحظِ المتندّمِ

    I am a plant your bounty watered after barrenness

    And my season rose up fixed with you

  65. أنا غرس نعمتك ارتوت بك أيكتي

    بعد الجفوف وقام عندك مَوسمي

    You saw where I lacked and heard me

    While deaf to me or blind was everyone but you

  66. أبصرتَ موضعَ خَلّتي وسمعتَ لي

    وسواك من قد صَمَّ عني أو عَميِ

    You enriched me with your eternal river

    Without needing the stingy’s measly gifts

  67. أغنيتني بجَداك حِلّاً واسعاً

    عن ضيّق بندى سواك محرَّم

    And you lifted off me the humiliation of villains and their drivel

    My lips with a sea of your gift inspired

  68. ورفعتَ عن بلل اللئام ورشحهم

    شفَتي ببحرٍ من نوالك مفعَمِ

    And you staunched my prolonged thirst from them

    As though your right hand had staunched my blood for me

  69. وحقنتَ طَوْلاً ماءَ وجهي عنهُمُ

    فكأنما حقَنتْ يمينُك لي دمي

    I used to shun praising kings

    And begging whomsoever of them

  70. قد كنتُ عن مدح الملوك بمعزل

    وعن السؤال على طريقٍ أيهْمِ

    Stingy ones do not pity my wrath

    Nor do I please at the generous one's gift

  71. لا يُشفِق البخلاءُ من غضبي ولا

    أرضَى بفضل عطيّةِ المتكرّمِ

    So you moved my lingering trait

    And breached my condition of scarcity and thrift

  72. فنقلتَ بالإحسان تالدَ شيمتي

    ونقضتَ شرطَ تقلّلي وتحشمي

    And you granted me what I have not attained, so I knew

    My poetry’s qualities in you I had not known

  73. وأنلتني ما لم أنل فعلمتُ من

    عادات شعري فيك ما لم أعلمِ

    And I wore your blessings, some of which

    I straightened up to thank the benefactor

  74. ولبستُ أنعمَك التي من بعضها

    أن صرتُ مضطلعاً بشكر المنعمِ

    So if my conscience obeys you or the daughters of superior intellect

    In their slowness to speak, eloquently expressed to you

  75. فلئن أطاعك خاطري أو أفصحتْ

    لك من إِبايَ بناتُ فكرٍ معجِمِ

    And you possessed of my praise what they had not

    Except through straining beyond comfort

  76. وملكتَ من مدحي الذي لم يملكوا

    إلا بفرطِ تكلُّف وتجشمِ

    And by spreading thriving praise of my reputation

    You witnessed unmatched advancement of mine

  77. فبما نشرتَ منوِّهاً من سُمعتي

    وشهدتَ غير مقلِّد بتقدمي

    And you championed the truth of me without conformity

    And judged with equity without an arbiter

  78. ونصرتَ فيَّ الحقَّ غيرَ مراقَب

    وحكمتَ بالإنصاف غيرَ محكَّمِ

    And if I remain, striking wonders shall you hear

    Not given before me by faculties of any speaker

  79. ولئن بقيتُ لتسمعنّ غرائباً

    لم تُعطَها قبلي قُوَى متكلِّمِ

    Beauties bred in their interiors for you

    Amongst singular men and the peerless

  80. تلك المحاسنُ منجَباتُ بطونها

    لك بين فذٍّ في الرجال وتوأمِ

    The envious decree by necessity

    For the high-flying merit ahead of the ahead

  81. يقضِي الحسودُ لها قضاءَ ضرورةٍ

    بفضيلة الطاري على المتقدمِ

    Submissive before you on the day of their tune

    My mouth the bridle of every hearing deaf

  82. تنقادُ بين يديك يوم نشيدها

    لفمي خِطامةُ كلِّ سمع أصلمِ

    They jostle at the lip of its verses

    As pilgrims crowd the sides of Zamzam

  83. يتزاحمون على ارتشاف بيوتها

    حشدَ الحجيج على جوانبِ زمزمِ

    Time stored in the treasury of your kingdom’s era its treasure

    Until it became shining with bliss

  84. ذَخَر الزمانُ لعصر ملكك كنزَها

    حتى تكونَ منيرةً بالأنعمِ

    And there emerged with prosperity a nobler ascendant

    From its horizon, and you arrived with gladder arrival

  85. وإذا زففتُ لديك من نحلاتها

    عِظمَ الفصاحةِ في المقال الأعظمِ

    And you dressed for celebration in two robes of fortune

    Two patterned brocades amidst threaded and dotted

  86. نطقتْ فصاحتُها بأنّي واحدٌ

    والشعرُ بين ملَجلَج ومجمجَمِ

    Characterizing your height between Arabized past

    In tongue of itsjourney and incoming foreign

  87. قد عُطِّلت سُبُلُ القريض فكلُّهم

    يتخابطون بجُنح أعشَى مظلمِ

    So time took pride in you until

    Every day ties back to the days of your rule

  88. ما بين حيْرةِ قائلٍ لم يحتشم

    كشْفَ العيوب وسامع لم يفهمِ

    And people’s eyes from you are night blind

    So I seek refuge for your glory from eyes of stars

  89. وتكاثَر الشعراءُ كثرةَ قِلَّةٍ

    فغدا السكوت فضيلةً للمُفحمِ

    May its shadows never divert from us

    It is the refuge of the glowing and haven of the gloomy

  90. فتمَلَّ مدحي واحتفظ بي إنني

    زادُ المقلِّ ونُهزةُ المتغنِّمِ

    And time is devoid while your eternal rule remains intact,

    No ruin or decay

  91. واعطف علي وقد عطفت وإنما

    أبغى المزيد وقد بدأت فتمّمِ

    And the most virtuous ascendant rose with fortune:

    You arrived with the most joyous arrival

  92. أعطيتَني سرّاً ولكن لم يبن

    بالمال عندك شهرتي وتوسُّمي

    And you dressed for the two festivals in robes of fortune,

    Two patterned brocades amidst threaded and dotted

  93. فأجلْ على عِطفي علامةَ مفخر

    يُثنيِ برأيك فيّ من لم يعلمِ

    They feature your stature between a fluent past,

    In language of its journey, and a comprehensive incoming,

  94. يعلو بها بين الأعادي ناظري

    ويبين فضلُ تحقُّقي وتحرُّمي

    By you time took pride until all of it

    Is a feast belonging to the days of your rule.

  95. وأعنْ على دنيا حملتُ ثقيلَها

    بك مع تلاشي بنيتي وتهدُّمي

    And people's eyes are blinded from you

    So I seek refuge for your glory from eyes of the stars.

  96. لا تبلُني فيها بغيرك حاكماً

    لم أخلُ من شكوى بها وتظلُّمِ

  97. وسنان عن حقّي إذا نبّهتُه

    قالت خلائقُه الجعادُ له نمِ

  98. لولاك لم أظفَر بنهلةِ طائرٍ

    من مالهِ المتأجِّن المتأجِّمِ

  99. يا بردَ أحشائي صبيحةَ قيل لي

    هذا الوزير فطب صباحاً وانعَمِ

  100. فكأنّ أوبةَ مالكٍ ولك البقا

    طرَقتْ بها الأخبارُ سمعَ متمِّمِ

  101. عادت إلى دار السلامِ سُعودُها

    بك فارعها وأقمْ عليها واسلمِ

  102. وهبِ الوصالَ لأنفسٍ مشتاقةٍ

    شَوْقَ العِطاشِ إلى السحابِ المُرهمِ

  103. لا حُوِّلَتْ عنّا ظلالُك إنَّها

    متقيَّلُ الضاحِي ومأوَى المُعتمِ

  104. وخلا الزمانُ وعمرُ ملكك خالد

    لم ينتقِضْ هَرَماً ولم يتخرَّمِ

  105. وطلعت بالإقبال أشرف طالع

    من أُفقهِ وقدِمتَ أسعدَ مقدَمِ

  106. ولبستَ للعيدين ثوبَيْ دولةٍ

    أرِجَيْنِ بين مُرَقَّشٍ ومُرَقَّمِ

  107. يصفانِ طَوْلَك بين ماض معرِبٍ

    بلسانِ رحلتِهِ وآتٍ معجِمِ

  108. فخرت بك الأيامُ حتّى كلُّها

    عيدٌ إلى أيَّام ملكك ينتمي

  109. وغدت عيونُ الناس عنك كليلةً

    فأعيذُ مجدَك من عيونِ الأنجمِ
