None but you, though I trusted them, betray me,
While others, when I complain of thirst, disdain me.
I beg you not to deny me, importuning me,
When, besides my religion, I have debts galore.
How ugly, if you belie the good opinion I had of you
When others corroborate the good opinions I held!
And, in fairness, I ought to have been the first
Whose pact you would have honored, had you kept your word.
That you should be content to see me sad
Grieves me, when my pleasure is so slight to you.
My boughs are withered by your imprisonment of my clouds,
How long will branches suffer thirst?
When I cool my heart after a passion,
What a fevered man endures!
I shall keep silent, then you will think me the same,
While between us yawns a gulf.
I shall hide my emaciation under my clothes
When you expose it, the sleek will gloat.
Whatever aid others invoke, I only
Rely on your good opinion to assist me.
