1. تراك تَرى غُدوّاً أو أصيلا

    يعود ولم يُعِدْ خطباً جليلا

    Will you see tomorrow morning or evening

    Returning without making any sublime speeches

  2. وهل تلقى مَقيلاً من همومٍ

    وجدن حِشاك للبلوى مَقيلا

    Will you find any refuge from worries

    That would make misfortunes a refuge

  3. بلى هي تلك تأكلني سميناً

    أصابتني فتُمعِنُ أو هزيلا

    Yes, those very misfortunes that fatten me

    Afflict me and then intensify or attenuate

  4. نواهض بعد لم أنهض بعبءٍ

    وقد قرَّبن آخَر لي ثقيلا

    I rose up again after not rising up with any burden

    And the last one brought me something really heavy

  5. كموج البحر خطبٌ إثرَ خطبٍ

    فليت الدهرَ روَّحني قليلا

    Worries follow one after the other like sea waves

    If only fate would give me some comfort

  6. إلام أصاحب الأيامَ جَلْداً

    وجسمي ليس يَصحَبني نحولا

    Why do I withstand days with endurance

    When my body cannot withstand me being lean

  7. أعاركها ولي لا بدَّ منها

    غداً قِرنٌ يغادرني قتيلا

    I lend them to myself when I have no choice but to have them

    Tomorrow they will leave me a slain victim

  8. وما خطبٌ أجبتُ نداءَ حزني

    له ودعوتُ يا دمعي نزولا

    What worries have I answered the call of my sorrow for

    I bid them goodbye, Oh my tears, flow down

  9. كصبح حين صبَّح أمسِ عيني

    أراني كيف أغتبقُ العويلا

    Like the morning when my eyes bid yesterday goodbye

    I watch myself bursting into loud wailing

  10. ومفجوعين من أبناء سعدٍ

    فروع علاً يبكُّون الأصولا

    And two grieving sons of Saad

    Lofty branches crying for the roots

  11. رضُوا بالصمت من حزنٍ خشوعاً

    وقد وجدوا إلى القول السبيلا

    They were content with silence out of sad devotion

    And they found the way to speak

  12. وما استغفرتُمُ إلا لشخصٍ

    أعدّ ليومه الذخر الجزيلا

    I asked your forgiveness only for a person

    Who prepared for his day plentiful provision

  13. وحاكت أمّكم للحشر ثوباً

    عريضاً من نزاهتها طويلا

    And your mother tailored clothes for the Final Gathering

    Spacious from her purity, long

  14. ستلبسه غداً ويطول عنها

    فتُلحقكم شفاعتُها الفضولا

    Tomorrow she will wear them and she will join you

    With her surplus intercession

  15. سقى يا قبر ساقيتَيْ دموعي

    وما عطشاً سألتُ لك السيولا

    My grave, you watered my tears with your rainwater

    And I never asked you for floods

  16. محلّتك المنسِّيَتي شبابي

    ومنزلك المذكِّرني الرحيلا

    My two comforters have carried away my youth

    And your dwelling reminds me of departure

  17. سحابٌ يُنبت الحصباءَ خِصباً

    ويؤهلُ صوبُهُ الرَّبعَ المُحيلا

    A cloud that makes the meadows fertile

    And its direction prepares the departing quarter

  18. ولا برح النسيم ثراك حتى

    يجرّرَ فوقه الروضُ الذيولا

    The breeze still blows your earth until

    The meadow drags its train over it

  19. لقد أنطقتَ خرساءَ النواعي

    وعلَّمت المؤبِّن أن يقولا

    You made the silent wild doves speak

    And taught the professional wailers to chant

  20. وقالوا ما يمسُّك من مصابٍ

    عداك الأهلَ والأبَ والقبيلا

    And they said no calamity has befallen you

    Other than losing family, father and tribe

  21. فقلت وهل جَناني منه خالٍ

    إذا ما ناب تِرْباً أو خليلا

    So I said, does it make my tragedy any less

    If it changes to dust or a boon companion

  22. أبا الغاراتِ إن الصبر حصنٌ

    من التسليم عيبُك أن يميلا

    Oh father of raids, patience is a fortress

    Your shortcoming is to let it weaken

  23. قبيحٌ والفضائلُ عنك تُروَى

    يُبَصَّر مثلُك الصبرَ الجميلا

    Ugly when the virtues about you are narrated

    The likes of you sets a good example of beautiful patience

  24. وما شمسُ النهار وأنت بدرٌ

    بمزعجةٍ إذا عزمتْ أفولا

    The sun of daytime is not outshone when you are a full moon

    Disturbing when it is intent on setting

  25. أعرْها كلّما صعُبتْ عزاءً

    يريك وعُورَ مَسلكها سُهولا

    Show it whenever it gets difficult, consolation

    And you will see the smoothness of its arduous course

  26. وصن بالصبر قلبَك وهو سيفٌ

    قراعُ الهمّ يملؤه فلولا

    And guard your heart with patience, it being a sword

    The clashing of worries filling it with shards

  27. إذا رضيَ الحجورَ الموتُ قِسماً

    فمشكور بما ترك الفحولا

    If death was content with the honorable men as a share

    Then well done what the knights have left
