1. مَطَلَ الدَّينَ ولو شاء قضَى

    فاسقُ الذمّةِ ينسَى ما مضى

    The debt lingered though he could have paid,

    The breaker of pacts forgets what has passed.

  2. كيف يُرجَى النصحُ من محتكمٍ

    يُكثر السّخطَ ولا يرضى الرضا

    How can good advice be hoped from an arbitrator

    Who vents much anger and is not pleased with consent?

  3. سرّني يومَ مِنىً معترضاً

    ملء عيني وشجاني مُعرِضا

    I was gladdened one day by his objection,

    My eyes brimmed and my chest turned away.

  4. وجد الوجدَ كما خلَّفه

    بعد حولٍ ما برا ما أمرضا

    He felt the passion as he had left it

    After a year, not recovered from the illness.

  5. أيّها الرامي وما أجرَى دماً

    لا تحصِّبْ قد بلغتَ الغرضا

    O you who shoots arrows and sheds blood,

    Do not gather pebbles, you have reached the target.

  6. قَسَمَ الحبُّ فما أنصفني

    جورَ ما نفَّلَ لي وافترضا

    Love divided so did not do me justice,

    Wronging in what it parceled out and supposed.

  7. ما على ساقيَّ دمعي مغدِقاً

    في رضابٍ لو سقاه مبرِضا

    Do not blame my flooding tears

    In self-reproach, had they revived an invalid.

  8. قد سلبتم حسداً جوهره

    فاستحِلُّوه وبقُّوا العَرضا

    You have out of envy robbed him of his jewel.

    So you made forbidden and kept the honor.

  9. شَقِيَ السائقُ في تبليغه

    أدرى أيَّ طريقٍ نفضا

    The messenger suffered in his delivery.

    I know not which road dispersed.

  10. الغَضا إن الحشا من ذكره

    ربما استبردتُ منها بالغضا

    Restraint, if roughness is recalled,

    I may recover from it through restraint.

  11. اطلبوا للعين في أبياته

    نظرةً تَكحَلُها أو غُمُضا

    Seek for the eyes in his verses

    A gaze, to line them or close.

  12. وبنفسي هاجرٌ لم يعتمد

    قبضوا من أنسه فانقبضا

    With my soul an émigré who did not rely

    They grasped from his company so it shrank.

  13. لمتُمُ فيه وقلتم رقبة

    رمتُمُ صعباً وقُدتم رَيِّضا

    You blamed him and said a difficult neck,

    You threw it rugged and kindled glowing embers.

  14. إن تَفُتْكَ اليومَ شمسٌ حُجبتْ

    فغداً ما كلّ يومٍ أبيضَا

    If the sun is eclipsed today,

    Tomorrow not every day is bright.

  15. من أمرَّ الليلَ والصبحَ به

    أظلم الحظُّ عليه وأضا

    He who commanded the night and dawn for him

    Darkened fortune on him and lit.

  16. خلّ يا دهرُ ابن أيّوبَ وخذ

    كلَّ شيء إن فيه عِوَضا

    Leave Ayyoub’s son be, Fate, and take

    Everything, if in it there is compensation.

  17. هبْ ليَ الواحدَ إني اخترتُه

    وهنيئاً لك ما ضمّ الفضا

    Give me the only one, I chose him.

    And fortunate you are for what the horizon contained.

  18. بك أَفدي وبهم منك أخاً

    حين أمذقتم ودادي مَحَضا

    With you I ransom and with them from you a brother

    When you made me taste sincere affection.

  19. ناصلاً من صدإِ العار كما

    خلَّص القَينُ الحسامَ المنتضى

    Cleaving from the rust of shame, as

    The whetted sword cleaves what is sharpened.

  20. لبس المجدَ فما أوحشه

    أيّ ثوبٍ في هوى المجد نضا

    He wore glory but how lonely it was,

    What garment at glory’s love trimmed?

  21. سودَدٌ حِلُّ تراثٍ ونرى

    كرمَ القومِ مُعاراً مقرَضا

    Blackened lineage an heirloom yet we see

    The people’s generosity mortgaged.

  22. شرفٌ يا آل أيّوب مشى

    معرقاً فيكم مطيلاً معرِضا

    Glory, O Ayyub’s family, walked

    Sweaty among you, far-extending.

  23. نرتعي أوديَةً مُهشَمةً

    وترودون ربيعاً مُحمِضا

    We pasture in ravaged valleys

    While you graze a fertile spring.

  24. وقف الحبَّ على دوحتكم

    غُصُنٌ منها لقلبي قبضا

    Love halted at your dunes,

    A branch from it clutched at my heart.

  25. نجتني منه خياراً لكُمُ

    حلو ما لاك فمٌ أو قَرَضا

    You saved me from it the best for you.

    Sweet what a mouth has kissed or bitten.

  26. مِدَحاً تنشر أعراضكُمُ

    نشرَ حسناء لعُرسٍ مَعْرضا

    Praise which your honors spread

    As a beautiful bride spreads for a wedding feast.

  27. سائراتٍ تحت أوصافكُمُ

    شاهداتٍ لا يذقن الغُمُضا

    Walking beneath your traits,

    Witnesses who taste no slumber.

  28. ما سعى للبيت يمشي حاسراً

    راجلٌ وابنُ ركابٍ ركضا

    Whoever strived for the house walks disappointed,

    A footman while the rider’s son raced.

  29. وجرت أوداجُها قائمةً

    يوم جَمعٍ وتَلَوَّتْ رُبُضا

    And its pregnant she-camels strode

    On a day of gathering, kneading and rolling.
