سَلاَ دارَ البخيلةِ بالجِناب

متى عَرِيَتْ رُباكِ من القِبابِ

I asked the house of the stingy one about the new moon

When did its Lord uncover it from the domes?

وكيفَ تشعَّبَ الأظعانُ صبحا

بدائدَ بين وُهْدِك والشِّعابِ

And how the valleys branched out at dawn

Wandering between your affection and the cliffs

بطالعةِ الهلال على ضُمَيْر

وغاربةٍ كمنقَضِّ الشِّهابِ

With the new crescent rising in your conscience

And setting like a fading meteor

حَملْنَ رشائقاً ومبدَّناتٍ

رماحَ الخَطِّ تَنبُتُ في الرَّوابي

They carried goods and rolled up items

The spears of the line grow in the meadows

وأين رضاكِ عن سُقيَا دموعي

ربوعك من رضاكِ عن السحابِ

And where is your pleasure with my tear irrigation

Your gardens with your pleasure for rain

بكيتُكِ للفراقِ ونحنُ سَفْرٌ

وعُدْتُ اليومَ أبكي للإيابِ

I cried for you out of homesickness while we travel

And I came back today crying for the return

وأمسحُ فيكِ أحشائي بكفٍّ

قريبٍ عهدُها بحشا الرَّباب

And I wipe my insides with a palm

Whose hands are freshly stained with henna

لها أَرَجٌ بما أبقاه فيها ال

تصافحُ بعدُ من ريح الخِضابِ

It has a scent with what its friend maintained in it

It will not shake hands anymore with the wind of henna

أمفصِحةٌ فأطمعَ في جوابٍ

وكيف يُجيبُ رَسمٌ في كتابِ

Clear speaking so I hope for an answer

And how can a symbol respond in a book?

نَحَلتِ ففي ترابِكِ منكِ رَسمٌ

كما أني خَيالٌ في ثيابي

You granted and in your dust from you a symbol

As I am a mirage in my clothes

وفي الأحداج مُتعَبةُ المَطَايَا

تُلينُ عرائكَ الإبلِ الصِّعابِ

And in depression the she-camels tired of walking

Soften your she-camel’s harsh road

بَعيدَةٌ مَسقِطِ القُرْطيْن تُقْرَا

خُطوطُ ذؤابَتْيها في الترابِ

Far from the place of origin, she reads

The lines of its two humps in the dust

تَجَمَّع في الأساورِ مِعصَماها

ويَقلَقُ خصرُها لكَ في الحِقَابِ

Bracelets gather around her wrists

And her waist fluctuates in the saddlebags

تَعيبُ على الوفاءِ نحولَ جسمي

ألا بالغدر أجدرُ أن تُعابي

She blames my skinny body for being faithful

Is it not more appropriate for me to be blamed for treachery?

وما بِكِ أن نَحَلتُ سوى نُصولٍ

من السنواتِ أسرعَ في خِضابي

And what is wrong with you that I only got lean

The years were faster in graying my hair

جزِعت له كأنَّ الشَّيبَ منه

يَسُلُّ عليكِ نَصْلاً من قِراب

She was worried that the grayness was from it

Flowing blades on you from a relative

فما ذنبي إذا وقَعتْ عُقابٌ

من الأيّام طار لها غرابي

So what is my sin if punishment befell

A crow took off with my fortune

وقد كنتُ الحبيبَ وذا نحولي

وهذا في العريكة حدُّ نابي

And I was the lover with my leanness

And this is the utmost of my ability in your barren land

لياليَ من الحاجاتِ حُكْمِي

وليس وسيلةٌ بسوى شبابي

Nights of needs rule me

And I have no means but my youth

ألا للّه قلبُكَ من حَمولٍ

على عِلاَّتِ وَصْلٍ وأجتنابِ

Oh God, your heart is burdened

With the affliction of connection and avoidance

وحبُّكَ من وَفيِّ العهدِ باقٍ

على بُعْدِ يُحيلُ أو أقترابِ

And your love as the fulfiller of the covenant remains

With distance that makes difficult or easy

هوىً لكَ في جبالِ أبان ثاوٍ

وأنتَ على جبالِ عُمان صابي

I longed for you in Aban’s mountains wandering

While you are in Oman’s mountains clear

وكان المجدُ أعودَ حين يَهِوى

عليكَ من المهَفهَفة الكَعابِ

And glory used to return when it longs

For you from meadows of little vegetation

وإِن وراء بحر عُمان مُلْكاً

رطيبَ الظلِّ فَضفاضَ الرِّحابِ

And beyond the Sea of Oman there is a kingdom

With pleasant shade and vast space

رقيقٌ عيشُهُ عَطِرٌ ثراهُ

بِطُرَّاقِ الفضائلِ غيرُ نابي

Its life is soft and its land fragrant

With the outstanding virtues without flaw

متى تنزِلْ به تنزِلْ بوادٍ

من المعروفِ مَرعىِّ الجنابِ

When will you descend into a valley

Of good deeds, pasture of the outstanding ones?

يدبّره من الأمراء خرْقٌ

يَذِلُّ لعزِّه غُلْبُ الرِّقابِ

It is governed by the best of princes

Whose glory humbles the necks

وَفَي ذُو المجِد سَبَّاقا فوافَى

يحلِّق عُرْفُه والنجمُ كابي

The glorious competed and outdid

His glory flapping and the star waning

وقامَ بنفسِه يسعَى ففاقَتْ

غريزةُ نفسِه شَرَفَ النِّصابِ

And he strove by himself seeking thus surpassing

The instinct of his soul the honor of positions

وبانَ به لعينِ أبيهِ بَوْنٌ

أراه الشِّبلَ أغلبَ ليثَ غابِ

And his excellence appeared to his father’s eye

I see the cub defeating the mighty lion of the forests

على زَمَنِ الحَداثةِ لم يُفتهُ

تقدُّمُ شِيبهم قَدَمَ الشَّبابِ

In the era of youth, he did not fail them

The progression of their gray hair, the steps of youth

سَمَا لمكانهم وهُمُ شموسٌ

فطال الطودُ أعناقَ الهِضابِ

He appointed them to their positions while they are suns

So the mountain necks lengthened

وسيِّدُ قومِهِ من سوّدوه

بلا عَصَبيّةٍ وبلا مُحابي

And the master of his people who favored him

Without partisanship or personal interests

وقُدّم بالفِراسةِ وهو طِفْلٌ

تُحلَّلُ عنه أَنشِطةُ السِّخابِ

And he was presented with insight while a child

The capacities of the clouds are deduced from him

وما تَركُ الشريفِ على بنيه

وهم منه تَجَاوُزَهُ بعابِ

The Noble did not deprive his children

And they surpassed him with disapproval

وإن كان الفتى لأبيه فَرْعاً

فإن الغيثَ فَرْعٌ للسحابِ

And even if the young man is a branch to his father

The rain is a branch to the clouds

بَلَوْهُ وجرَّبوا يوميه نُعمَى

وبأساً في السكينةِ والوِثابِ

They tested him and tried his two days, luxury

And affliction, in peace and alertness

فما ظَهَروا مُخَاطَبةً بوانٍ

وما ظَفِروا مُضارَبَةً بنابي

But they did not appear with any defect

And they did not win with any vulnerability

ولا عدِموا به لَسَناً وقَطْعاً

عمائقَ في الإصابة والصوابِ

Nor did they lack biting and cutting

Profoundness in precision and correctness

لذلك جاوروا بالبحرِ بحراً

كِلاَ كرميْهما طاغي العُبابِ

Therefore, they settled by the sea, by the sea

Each generous, overflowing with abundance

يقول لِيَ الغنَي ورأي قُعودي

عن السعي المموِّل والطِّلاَبِ

The wealthy say to me and my view is

To refrain from striving for money and students

وعفةَ مذهبي ظَلِفاً ومَيْلي

إلى العيش المُرَمَّق وأنصبابي

And the chastity of my doctrine is suspect and my inclination

To the miserable life and self indulgence

أرى لك فيّ لو خاطرتَ مَرْعىً

يبدِّلُ صحَّةً أُهُبَ الجِرابِ

I see you if you venture to pasture

That replaces health, collapsed money bag

أما لكَ في بحارِ عمان مالٌ

يسُدُّ مَفاقِرَ الحاجِ الصِّعابِ

Do you not have wealth in the Omani seas?

That meets the needs of the struggling poor?

ومَولىً يوسعُ الحُرُماتِ رَعْياً

ويَعمُرُ دارسَ الأملِ الخرابِ

And a guardian who expands protection to the prohibited

And reconstructs the homes of lost hopes?

لعلَّ مؤيَّدَ السلطان تحنو

عواطفُ فضله بعدَ أجتنابِ

Perhaps the affection of the supported Sultan will lean

With the kindness of his virtues after avoidance

قفلتُ ودونه متلاطماتٌ

زَواخرهنَّ كالأُسْدِ الغِضابِ

I locked myself with raging she-camels

Whose tails are like the angry lion

صَواعدُ كالجبال إذا أحسَّتْ

نسيماً أو نوازلُ كالجَوابي

Rising like mountains when they sense

A breeze or descending like the paws

وأخضرُ لا يروق العينَ يُطْوَى

على بيضاءَ سوداءِ الإهابِ

The neighing of its Abyssinian steeds frightens the girls

If an informant she-camel meets you

تجاذبه الأزمَّةُ من حديدٍ

فَيَقمِصُ أو يُقَطَّر في الجذابِ

If she stumbles, she cannot be blamed

And if she cracks, it is not because of fissures

إذا خُوصُ الرِّكاب شكون ظِمْأً

شكى رُكبانُها شَرَقَ الرِّكابِ

And I am not a swimmer so I can say I will be saved

Perhaps if her back carried me one day

يروعُ حُداءُ أحبُشِها النَّوَاتي

إذا شاقتك حاديةُ العِرَابِ

When my eyes dream of it at night

I started touching - are my clothes wet?

إذا عثَرتْ فليس تُقالُ ذنبا

وإن صدَعتْ فليست لأنشعابِ

And why do I risk when its heaven handed me

Without estrangement or doubts?

ولستُ بسابح فأقولُ أنجو

عسى إن ظهرُها يوما كَبَابي

And its gifts came to me from afar

With the best of what comes with proximity

إذا حَلَمَتْ بها في النوم عيني

طفِقتُ أجُسُّ هل رَطِبتْ ثيابي

Desires from its hand surprised me

And sincere fulfillment with my hopes

ومالي والخِطارَ وقد سَقَتْني

سماءُ يديهِ من غير أغترابِ

And more was added to the account of my wishes

But a scarf I did not account for

وجاءتني مَواهبُهُ بعيدا

بأفضلِ ما يجيءُ مع أقترابِ

Dew reached the generous but its guard denied me access

As if in you from years creeping

رغائبُ من يديه فاجأتني

وَفَيْنَ رِضاً بآمالي الرِّغابِ

When I carried goods or a letter

To you, it was looted and robbed

وزِدنَ على حساب مُنايَ لكن

وِشَاحٌ لم يكُنْ لي في حِساب

You offered generosity to a loved one

So an evader who does not reciprocate won

ندىً وَصَلَ السماحَ به ولكن

تولَّى عنه حاجبُه حجابي

You sent it with the cowardly so a flock was lost

You entrusted it to the cunning wolves

أمرتَ بها كعِرضك لم يُدنَّسْ

بلا غِشٍّ يشوبُ ولا أرتيابِ

Had it not been for your service protecting it

And the sanctity of your glorious door

من الذهب الصريح فصار ممّا

يُبَدَّلُ في يديه إلى الذَّهابِ

The mosquito would not be safe from the eagle

Nor would the rat bite the young lion

وقاسَمَني مُناصَفةً عليه

وجاحَدَني ليحبسه كتابي

He guided you so he silenced me while he

Reduced with what came to him of reproach

وقال ولم يهبكَ ولم يَصُنِّي

كذلكَ فيكَ منذُ سنينَ دابي

I was deprived of your company unjustly

By the raid of a friend of yours among friends

إذا حُمِّلتُ رِفْدا أو كتاباً

اليكَ لواه نَهْبي وأغتصابي

Three years going by year after year

With a torn scarf, a scavenged prey

مَكارمُ سقتَهنّ إلى محبٍّ

ففاز بها مُغيرٌ لم يُحابِ

While you are the guard of your money or delegated

To me even if by the side of the road

بعثتَ بها الخئون فضاع سِرْبٌ

أمِنتَ عليه غائرةَ الذئابِ

If you are fair to me, you owe me

A fine for what accumulated in the account

ولولا أنَّ خِدمتَه وَقَتْهُ

وحُرمةَ عزِّ بابك والجنابِ

Reconsider - how many poor did you make rich with it?

And how many broken ones did you mend from affliction?

لَمَا سَلِمَ البعوضُ على عُقاب

ولا عُضَّ الهِزبرُ بشرِّ نابِ

And how often were you called, O sea of generosity?

So the sea came with wondrous wonders

أَدَلَّ بكم فأفحَمني وكانت

نواحيه مآكلَ للسِّبابِ

My wishes were fulfilled by you and my vows paid

So fulfill your promises that satisfy me

فَجَلَّ عن الهجاء بذاك عندي

وقَلَّ بما أتاه عن العتابِ

And you have wealth so send a trusted one

To me with it and make it my answer

سُلِبْتُ نداك في ناديك ظلما

بغارةِ صاحبٍ لك في الصحابِ

And do not compel my thirst to a water skin

Other than you regarding my position and turning

ثلاثَ سنينَ حَوْلا بعدَ حَوْلٍ

بكفِّ وِشاح مُقتَسَمٌ نِهابي

I remind you of what you did not use to forget

My disobedience under your shade and displacement

وأنتَ خفيرُ مالِكَ أو يؤدَّى

إليَّ ولو بمنقطِع الترابِ

And if I ever reach a star

It will be because of your making

إذا أنصفْتَني فعليك دَيْناً

غَرامةٌ ما تجمَّعَ في الحسابِ

أعدْ نظراً فكم أغنيتَ فقراً

به وجَبَرتَ كَسْراً من مُصابِ

وكم نوديتَ يا بحرَ العطايا

فجاء البحرُ بالعجبِ العُجابِ

وَفَتْ فيك المنى وقَضَتْ نُذُوري

فَوَفِّ عُلاكَ حقّي تُرْضِها بي

وفي يدك الغني فابعث أمينا

إليّ به وصيِّرْهُ جوابي

ولا تُحوِجْ ظَمايَ إلى قَلِيبٍ

سواك على مُقامي وأنقلابي

أُذكِّرك الذي ما كنتَ تنسَى

سُفوري تحت ظلِّك وأنتقابي

وإِني إن بلغتُ النجمَ يوماً

لكان إلى صنيعتك أنتسابي
