على أيّ لائمةٍ أربعُ

وفي أيِّما سلوةٍ أطمعُ

On what blamer do I rely

And in what hope do I aspire

وقد أُخِذَ العهدُ يوم الرحيل

أمامِيَ والعهدُ مستودَعُ

When the promise was taken on the day of departure

Before me, while the promise is kept

فقَصرَك يا خادعي من وفائي

لؤمت أعن كرمي أُخدعُ

So your betrayal of my loyalty was too short

I wronged the generosity of my eyes, I was deceived

ويا صاحبي والنوى بيننا

ضلالٌ فطُرقُ الهوى مَهيعُ

And my friend, while the intention is between us

Straying, so the ways of love are confusing

لأمرٍ أخوك غدَا صامتاً

على أنه الخاطبُ المِصقعُ

Because of something, your brother fell silent

As if he is the suitor who lisps

سقى الغيثُ بغدادَ إمّا سقى

لذكرتها جَدَّ بي المدمعُ

The rain watered Baghdad or watered

I remembered it, my tears flowed

وحيَّا بها قمراً ما استقر

رَ بعد فراقي به مطلِعُ

And it greeted a moon that did not settle

After my separation, does it rise with it

رأى شَهرَ بُعدِي مَحاقاً له

فلم يُغنه العَشرُ والأربعُ

It saw the month of my absence filled with sorrow

Neither the ten nor the four benefited it

ونومٍ على الطيف عاهدتُه

وقد زار لو أنني أهجعُ

And a sleep I promised its specter

If only I was sleeping when it visited

ضحكتُ أهوّن بيني عليه

وعبّس يزري بمن يَفجَعُ

I laugh, alleviating its effect on me

While it frowns, hating the one who grieves

أغرَّكَ بعدَ فراق الوزي

ر أنّي لضرب النوى أخضعُ

Did its separation after the minister deceive you

That I submit to the striking of love

أسير وضلع الهوى عند من

تَفِرُّ لفُرقته الأضلعُ

I travel and the ribs of love are with someone

Whose separation makes the ribs quiver

وأسكنُ من وطني بعدَه

إلى حسرةٍ قلّما تُقلعُ

And I dwell away from my homeland after it

To sorrow that is rarely eradicated

وفي ضمن فرحةِ عَودي جوىً

يدلّ على أنني موجَعُ

And in the joy of my return, pain

Indicating that I am hurt

أكافِينا كافِيَ الحادثا

تِ سوداً لنا سُمرُها شُرَّعُ

Our disasters compensate us with misfortunes

Whose lines of evil portend to us

بك انتصر الأدَبُ المستضامُ

وأنشر ميِّتُه المُضجَعُ

Through you, literature that was wronged was victorious

And its deceased spread on the sickbed rose

سفرتَ بفضلك عن وجهه

وظِلُّ الخمولِ له برقُعُ

You traveled by your grace from its face

And the shade of sluggishness is patched for it

إذا المدح ناداه شوق إليك

فناداه بُطئِيَ إذ أُسرعُ

When praise calls out to you out of longing for you

It calls out to you slowly when I hurry

فتحت بجودك عيناً ترى

وفودَك أو أذُناً تسمعُ

Through your generosity you opened an eye that sees

And ears that hear your delegations

أرى مقصداً تم علي

ه عين بعود به المرجَعُ

I see a purpose fulfilled for me

An eye that returns with it to the refuge

وقد هزّني والدجى مُسبَلٌ

وأسهرني والورى هُجَّعُ

And adventures overwhelm the heart's core

For them in the heart's core there is a crack

حوادثُ تغشَى صميمَ الفؤاد

لها في صميم الصفا مَصْدعُ

So neither a filled leather bag

Feeds, nor a spring that bubbles

فلا ربعةٌ زادُها مشبِعٌ

يغذِّي ولا نهلةٌ تنقعُ

I will abandon your house, not because of meanness

As the pasture abandons the square

سأهجرُ دارَك لا عن قِلىً

كما يهجر المرتعَ المُربِعُ

I entrust your house out of experience

With what love will I entrust tomorrow

أودّع دارك عن خبرةٍ

بأيّ غرام غداً أودَعُ

Your generosity in excuse and custom is for me

Lenient, this and that brings relief

فجودُكَ بالعذرِ والعُرفِ لي

سماحان هذا وذا يُوسِعُ

Goodness and evil will be attributed to you

God forbid you do what is ugly

سيُنسَبُ حسنٌ وقبحٌ إلي

ك حاشاك يَقبُحُ ما تَصنَعُ

And the philanderers ask about my profits

While others lose what I profit

ويسألُ عن رِبحيَ المبضعون

وغيرك يخسر ما أبضعُ

I left and did not leave anyone but myself

When words gush, they are unstoppable

رحلتُ ولم أبقِ خَلقاً سواي

إذا اندفع القولُ لا يُدفَعُ

And Iraq's tongue was led to you

And you are indeed the convincing witness

وسُقتُ إليك لسانَ العراقِ

وإنك لَلشاهِدُ المقنِعُ

A tongue that he disciplines among men

A path transcending others is paved

لسانٌ يصرِّفه في الرجال

طريقٌ على غيره مَسبعُ

When it praises Ahmad, the honey is from it

And poison from censuring him is fermented

إذا هو أحمدَ فالشَّهدُ من

ه والسمُّ من ذمّه مُنقَعُ

And people do not consider what I departed with

But they observe what I return with

وما ينظر الناسُ ماذا رحلتُ

ولكن يراعون ما أرجِعُ

And the commands you implement, young man

Preserve all that is entrusted

وودَّ أوامرَك العالياتِ

فتىً حافظٌ كلَّ ما يودَعُ

What your hands have done gladdens you

If it is wasted by others, the workmanship

يسرُّك ما اصطنعته يداك

إذا ضاعَ في غيره المَصْنعُ

Congratulations on facing the month of fasting

And reap its good as you sow

تهنأ بقابل شهر الصيام

وأحصِدْه خيراً كما تزرعُ

Its new crescent was obscured by the band of oppressors

While you humbly bow to it

تلابطه شِرَّةُ الظالمين

وأنت له خاشعاً تخشعُ

Your secret is from it which saddened them

To preserve for God what they have squandered

وسرّك منه الذي ساءَهم

لحفظك في اللّه ما ضيّعوا

And when you came out to sight the crescent

Hopeless from it went whoever aspires

ولما برزتَ تُرائي الهلالَ

مضى آيساً منه مَن يَطمَعُ

Because they denied seeing

A crescent rise above a moon

لأنهُمُ أنكروا أن يَرَوا

هلالاً على قمرٍ يطلعُ
