1. جرَتْ لها ببابلٍ يمينا

    سوانحٌ غرّاً لها وعينا

    She faced in Babylon auspicious events,

    Pleasant to her, delighting her eyes.

  2. لا يتوقَّى عُورَها وعُضْبها

    مَن عيَّف الأعيُنَ والقُرونا

    He who refined eyes and created horns

    Does not dread her shame and anger.

  3. فأبصرتْ حقًّا مُناها في الحمى

    وظنَّها بحاجرٍ يقينا

    She truly saw her purpose in ardour

    And fancied it to be certain.

  4. وأصبحتْ ترعَى الخصيبَ قبلَ أن

    تبلغَه وتنهَلُ المَعينا

    She began grazing the lush before

    Reaching it and drinking from the spring.

  5. عازفةً رافعةً رؤوسَها

    على الظَّما أن ترِد الأَجونا

    Strumming, raising her head

    Hoping to regain the love songs.

  6. نرجو بترك رزقِها الناحِل أن

    تأكلَ من رزقِ غدٍ سمينا

    We hope, by leaving her abundant provision,

    That she eats of the fatness of tomorrow's provision.

  7. موائرا تخلَع من مراحِها

    على الرُّبَى الأرسانَ والعُهونا

    Circling, taking off from her saddle

    On the meadows, the platforms and lambs.

  8. خابطةً أشناقَها بسُوقِها

    تحسَبُ فَرطَ حرصها جُنونا

    Scratching her lips with her market value,

    Deeming her extreme greed madness.

  9. كأنَّ خرقاءَ الرياحِ شرَّعتْ

    في لُجَّةِ الآلِ بها سفينا

    As if the tatters of the winds hoisted

    Sails amidst the waves, with her a ship.

  10. فَبلَغتْ أدعو لها وَبلَّغتْ

    وخانني من لم يقل آمينا

    She attained, I pray for her and she attained,

    While those who did not say "Amen" betrayed me.

  11. وأنتَ إن كنتَ رفيقا فأعِدْ

    ذكرَ الحمى أطيبَ ما غُنّينا

    And you, if you were a friend, repeat

    The best song sung in praise of ardour.

  12. أعِدْ فمن آيةِ سكّان الحمى

    وذكرِهم أن تُطرِبَ الحزينا

    Repeat, for it is a sign of the people of ardour

    And the mention of them gladdens the grieving.

  13. يا جمَعَ اللهُ قلوبا باللّوى

    بدَّدها اتِّباعُها العيونا

    O He who gathered hearts at the twist,

    Followers dispersed them.

  14. وسَرَّ حيّاً بالشُّريْفِ أقسموا

    لا فَكَّ فادٍ عندهم رهينا

    They sincerely swore by the noble one,

    No heart with them was held hostage.

  15. أمنتُهم على الهوى فلم يكن

    مودَعُ قلبي منهُمُ أمينا

    I trusted them with passion, but my

    Heart's deposit with them was not honest.

  16. يا حبّذا لحيِّهم باديةٌ

    وهَبْتُ فيها للجفاءِ اللينا

    Blessed is their abode the desert,

    Where I wished for harshness, softness!

  17. وحَبَّ بعدَ الظلِّ في أن أصطلي

    هاجرةً وأُصُلا دَخينا

    And I love after shade, to warm myself

    An emigrant, kindling a fire.

  18. والأرضُ مسّت تربَها رِيَاطُهم

    حتى ظننتُ رامةً دارينا

    The land touched its soil, their winds,

    That I thought it a lush residence.

  19. جلَوا دجاها ومشَوا صباحَها

    يطارحون الهَيَفَ الغصونا

    They vanished its darkness and walked its dawn,

    Casting twigs and branches.

  20. هم قوَّدوني وبرأسي نخوة

    أن أستميح اللَّحزَ الضنينا

    They exhorted me, and by my head’s magnanimity,

    To pardon bitter resentment.

  21. وهم أذالوا الشيبَ في مفارقي

    بالصدِّ لاعدِّي له الخمسينا

    And they humiliated old age during my separation

    By preventing me, counting it not fifty.

  22. ما أجلبَ الدهرُ عليَّ بالأذى

    إلاّ أصابَ منهُمُ مُعينا

    Time did not inflict harm upon me

    Except attaining help from them.

  23. أَعْدايَ أهوَى قُربَهم كأنَّهم

    عُضْوٌ دَوٍ أكرَهُ أن يَبينا

    My enemies, I love their nearness, as though they are

    A member I’d hate to separate!

  24. لا يُبعد اللهُ الوفاءَ صاحباً

    كان ولا أطمعُ أن يكونا

    God does not distance a loyal friend

    Nor do I aspire that they will be two!

  25. أعيت يدي حبالُ كلّ ناكثٍ

    أفتُلُ وهو يقطعُ القرينا

    My hands have tired from the ropes of every betrayer—

    I untie while he cuts off the companion.

  26. ولو سبرتُ الناسَ أو أعلقتُها

    مُزرّعيّاً عَلِقتْ مَتينا

    Had I probed the people or suspended them

    Suspending firmly implanted.

  27. إذاً لقامَ من عليٍّ دونها

    خِرقٌ يرى كلَّ عليٍّ دُونا

    Then the shreds of each “Ali” beneath them

    Would stand, every “Ali” beneath insignificant!

  28. غضبانُ أن يأكلَ ضيمٌ جارَهُ

    أو أن يبيتَ زادُه ممنونا

    Angry to eat the injustice of a neighbor

    Or that his provision spend the night withheld!

  29. إذا دعاه المجدُ قام ناهضا

    فحمَل الألوفَ والمئينا

    When glory invited him, he stood up hastily

    And carried thousands and hundreds.

  30. جرى على واشجةٍ من عِرقِه

    لغايةٍ أتعبتِ الساعينا

    He ran with resolve from his sweat

    To a goal that exhausted the messengers.

  31. وبلَغ الكمالَ نفسا وعُلاً

    من قبل أن يبلُغَه سِنينا

    And attained perfection of soul and height

    Before reaching his years.

  32. مبارَكٌ عِمّتُه ولُثْمُهُ

    تَلوثُ خدَّ البدرِ والجبينا

    Blessed are his uncle’s shelter and his kiss

    That mingles with the full moon’s cheek and forehead!

  33. تحسبُ من حيائه ورفدِه

    وجهاً مُميها ويداً لَبونا

    You’d reckon from his bashfulness and help

    A veiled face and withered hand.

  34. تلقَى السعودَ حيثما لقِيتَه

    تزجُرُ منها طيرَها الميمونا

    Wherever you meet good fortune,

    It drives away its blessed birds.

  35. أوفَى على مَرقبةٍ من عزمهِ

    مَرقَى النسورِ تطلُب الوُكونا

    He climbed to an observatory of his determination

    The ascent eagles take seeking food.

  36. وهبّ من لسانه بصعدةٍ

    تَغْدِر كلّ خَصِمٍ طعينا

    And inspired with eloquence like lightning

    That deafens every despicable opponent.

  37. مَن حاملُ الحاجةِ عنّي راكبا

    إلى العلا طريقَها المسنونا

    You who carry my need, riding

    To the heights, its paved route.

  38. يقطَعُ ما بيني وبين أرَبِي

    على دنوِّ الدار هذا البِينا

    Cutting what is between me and my Lord

    At the proximity of this house.

  39. يطوي السرى نهارَه بليلهِ

    جَلْدَ المَطَا والعيسُ قد وَنِينا

    Finishing his day trip with his night journey

    The skin of his shank pained.

  40. حُرّاً إذا استودعتُه وصيّةً

    كان عليها الحازمَ المأمونا

    Honorable, when I entrust him a bequest,

    He is the decisive, trusted one.

  41. قلْ للعميد مُبلغا وإنما

    تُسمِعُ منه السامعَ الأذينا

    Say to the chief, conveying while

    You make the listening ear hear me.

  42. قد أخذ الشوقُ إليك جهدَهُ

    من قلبيَ النزاعَ والحنينَا

    Yearning for you has taken its toll

    On my heart—the struggle and longing!

  43. ومَلَكَتْني قبلَ أن تبتاعَني

    منك صفاتٌ طُفنَ بي عِزينا

    And possessed me before you buy me

    From you traits wrapped me, dear.

  44. وجاءت الأنباءُ عنك فنشت

    أنفاسُنا أعطرَ ما يأتينا

    The news of you sprouted so

    Our breaths are the sweetest we receive.

  45. في كلّ يومٍ خبرٌ أنك مَن

    لا تلدُ الأرضُ له قرينا

    Every day, news that you are one

    The land does not birth as an equal!

  46. وأنَّ للفضل ومن مَتَّ به

    منك مكانَ شعفٍ مكينَا

    And that for merit, whoever is clad with it

    Has from you a sure, firm place!

  47. محاسنٌ آثارُها شاهدةٌ

    أنّ الرُّواةَ عنك يَصدُقونا

    Beauty—its traces testify—

    That those who narrate of you are truthful!

  48. ونحن في دارٍ يُرى المجدُ بها

    أعمَى وحظُّ أهلها مجنونا

    And we in an abode where glory is seen

    Blind, and its people's fortune demented!

  49. إما لئيما يرتقي بشرِّه

    فيها وإما فاضلا مسكينا

    Either despicable, ascending in its evil,

    Or excellent yet poor!

  50. ولا صديقَ غيرُ ذي صنائع

    أحسنُ ما يُحسِنُ أن يخونا

    And no friend but one with talents

    Does best that he may betray!

  51. فلا تسلْ عن نزَواتِ كبِدي

    إلى علاك كلّما سُمِّينا

    So do not ask about my spleen’s caprices

    Or the ambitions of my eyelid to see you, no little nor much.

  52. وعن طِماحِ مقلتي لنظرٍ

    إليك لا شَزْرا ولا مشفونا

    For I required from your nearness incense

    The days did not lend me.

  53. فأقتضى من قربكم لُبانةً

    ما طلني الدهرُ بها الديونا

    So, does this suitor have right to marry

    Affection he has loved some time?

  54. فهل لذا الخاطب أن تُنكِحَه

    مودةً حنَّ إليها حِينا

    He dowries it with safekeeping, for if he begets it,

    He will beget with your praise children.

  55. يُمهِرُها الصونَ فإن أولدها

    أولدَها بمدحك البنينا

    Today you marvel a friend and tomorrow—

    None lived having a truer brother!

  56. يُعجبُك اليومَ صديقا وغداً

    ما عاش في الدهر أخاً خَدينا

    And combat depictions of you with counter odes

    Remaining while the days have perished!

  57. وجاليا وصفَك في معَارضٍ

    يَبقَيْن والأيامُ قد فَنينا

    Every embellished one, their embellishment

    She auctions cheap her precious coldness!

  58. كلّ مُوشّىً حَوكُها موشَّع

    تشرِي رخيصا بُرْدَها الثمينا

    Had you been found young in rewarding it

    None but you would be the cheated loser!

  59. لو جُدتَ بالشباب في ثوابها

    كان سواك الخاسرَ المغبونا

    And if you bend away your neck from its like,

    It would come pursuing others.

  60. وإن لوَيتَ عُنُقاً عن مثلها

    جاءتك تسترفد آخرينا

    It was your duty, truly, by

    What you were privy to the friendship’s needs.

  61. كان عليك نصرُها حقًّا بما

    كنتَ بحاجات الندى ضمينا

    I left it seeking itself

    Behind a folk who lack feeling.

  62. تركتُها ساعيةً بنفسها

    وراءَ قومٍ غيرِ عاطفينا

    I have shot for them from it arrows, so they preferred

    With its edges their bygone people.

  63. رِشتُ لهم منها سهاما فضَلوا

    بحدِّها قومَهُمُ الماضينا

    She filled the expanse of the mantle with their mention

    And they discarded her rights forgetfully!

  64. فملأتْ عرضَ الفلا بذكرهم

    ونبذوا حقوقَها ناسينا

    Have you approved what they have become

    Through deprivation while I am pleased?

  65. فهل رضيتَ لَهُمُ ما أصبحوا

    به من الحرمان لي راضينا

    If you refuse, then avenge in the future

    For sisters—future events!

  66. وإن أبيتَ فانتصر مستقبلا

    لأخواتٍ حادثاتٍ حِينا

    Judge with the judgment of glory for me against them

    And show her the secret of friendship hidden!

  67. اِقضِ بحكم المجد لي عليهمُ

    واظهِرْ لها سرَّ الندى المكنونا

    We did not disobey the causes of friendship in your praise

    So why do you disobey benevolence towards us?

  68. لم نعصِ أسبابَ الندى في مدحكم

    فكيف تعصون السماحَ فينا
