إذا لم يُرْعَ عندكم الودادُ

فسيّانِ القرابةُ والبعادُ

If cordiality is not maintained among you

Then kinship and distance become equal

عهودٌ يومَ رامةَ دارساتٌ

كما يتناوب الطَلَل العِهادُ

Promises made when building homes are forgotten

Just as the ruins are alternated by new structures

وأيمان تضيعُ بها المعاني

وتحفظها الأناملُ والعِدادُ

And oaths that lose their meanings

While fingers and numbers retain them

تطيرُ مع الخيانة كلَّ جنبٍ

وحبّاتُ القلوبِ بها تصادُ

They fly away with betrayal from every companion

And the hearts' seeds through them are reaped

أمعترِضٌ صدودُكِ أمَّ سعدٍ

ببعض الشرِّ أم خُلُقٌ وعادُ

Are you hindered by your rejection or blessed by Sa'd

With some evil, or is it manners and custom?

وعذلٌ فيك أوجعَ نازلٌ بي

أنا الملسوعُ والعذلُ العِدادُ

And blame in you that hurts me or befalling me

I am the touched and the blame the counter

وعبتِ وليس غيرُ الشيب شيئاً

أُذادُ له بعيبٍ أو أُكادُ

And you have excused while nothing but old age is a thing

I would counter you with a fault or almost do

وما منّي البياضُ فتَجرِميني

به ذَنْباً ولا منكِ السوادُ

And my whiteness does not condemn me with it

A sin, nor does your blackness

بأيمنِ ملتقَى الماءين دارٌ

لمرتادِ الهوى فيها مَرادُ

At the meeting point of two seas is a house

For the passionate - in it is their purpose

وقفتُ ومسعِدون معي عليها

ألا يا دارُ ما فَعَلتْ سعادُ

I stood and dwellers with me over it

Oh house! What did happiness do?

أقول لهم أُعلِّلُ فيكِ شوقي

وشيكاً ينقعُ الظمأَ الثَمادُ

I say to them justifying my ardour in you

And soon the thirst will trickle from the overflow

خذوا من يومكم لغدٍ نصيباً

من الأطلالِ إنّ اليومَ زادُ

Take from your day to the next a share

Of the ruins - today is provision

توقَّ البَّ تأمنْ كلَّ بغضٍ

فَداؤك من ذوائك مستفادُ

Good has been attained - trust every hatred

So your remedy from your remedies is beneficial

يخوّفني مَكايدَه زماني

صَغاركَ لا أُحسُّ ولا أكادُ

The cunning of my time frightens me

Your small ones - I do not feel or almost perceive

وقدرتُه إذا لم يُعطِ بخلٌ

وغايته إذا أعطى نَفادُ

And its power if stinginess does not give

And its extremity if given is exhaustion

فقل لبنيه لستُ إذاً أخاكم

بعادٌ بيننا أبداً بعادُ

So say to its youth I am not your brother

Distance between us forever and forever

أعان اللّه مسكيناً رجاكم

فإن رجاءَ مثلِكُمُ جهادُ

May God help a poor man hopeful of you

For hoping the like of you is struggle

رضينا من قبائلكم ببيتٍ

عمادُ المكرماتِ له عمادُ

We accept from your tribes a house

The pillar of bounties - for it pillars

بني عبدِ الرحيم وكلُّ فخر

يفوت فباسم نسبتهم يُفادُ

The children of Abdel Raheem and every pride

Vanishes - so through their lineage it is utilized

أعِدْ ذكرَ التحيّة في أناسٍ

إذا بَدَءُوا إليك يداً أعادوا

Repeat the greeting to people

If they initiate to you a hand they repeat

وقم واخطب بحمدك في ربوعٍ

وفودُ المجد عنها لا تُذادُ

And stand and speak praise in meadows

And delegations of glory from it are not countered

ومبتسمين يُوري الملكُ منهم

جباهاً كلُّ واضحةٍ زنادُ

Smiling they show from them

Brows - each clearly armored

رأَوا حفظَ النفوسِ إذا استميحوا

وقد بخل الحيا بخلاً فجادوا

They saw protecting souls if they were pardoned

And life was stingy in stinginess so they spent

فِدىً للمحسنين فتىَ عُلاهم

وناشرُها وقد درَسوا وبادوا

Redeeming the benefactors, their superior youth

Its spreader when they tread and perished

دعيٌّ في السماح وليس منه

متى اعترف الندي بك يا زِيادُ

Called in generosity and from it is not

Whenever the noble acknowledges you O Ziyad

دعِ العلياءَ يَسحَبْها عريقٌ

بياضُك يومَ نسبتهُ سوادُ

Leave the lofty to be dragged by a noble lineage

Your whiteness the day its blackness is darkness

يطولُ ركابَه إن قام فيها

ويقصرُ عن مقلَّده النجادُ

His steps lengthen if he stands among them

And the sword on his waist shortens from its sheath

ايا ابن عليٍّ اعتقلتك منّي

يدٌ لم تدرِ قبلك ما العَتادُ

Oh son of Ali, a hand seized you from me

That did not know before you what custom is

عركتُ يدَ الخطوبِ وفيَّ ضعفٌ

فَلِنَّ وهنَّ أَعباءٌ شِدادُ

I contended with the misfortunes of life and in me is feebleness

So blame and weakness are heavy burdens

لذلك تُستزاد الشمسُ نوراً

وحُبِّك الذي لا يُستزادُ

That's why the sun is given more light

And your love that cannot be given more

وحظُّك من جَنَى فكري ثناءٌ

يطول وطُولهُ فيك اقتصادُ

And your share of the crop of my mind is praise

That lengthens and its length in you is balance

إذا الشيءُ المعادُ أَملَّ سمعاً

تَكرَّر وهو طِيباً يُستعادُ

If what is promised hopes for a hearing

It is repeated and it being good is regained

فما خُطِبَتْ بأبلغَ منه خاءٌ

ولا نُطِقَتْ بأفصحَ منه ضادُ

So none were addressed with more eloquent than it ever

Nor was articulated with more eloquent than its “d”

ألا لا تذكُرُ الدنيا بخيرٍ

فتىً إلا وأنتَ به المرادُ

Lo! Do not mention the life with goodness

A lad unless you in it are the purpose

إذا حاتز امرؤ تأييدَ نجلٍ

أمدَّك من أبي سعد مِدادُ

If a man acquires the support of a star like you

What your father Saad extended supports him

شبيهُك والعلا منها اكتساب

ومنها وهو أفضلها وِلادُ

Your resemblance and the heights from it are adaptation

From it and it being the best of it birth

وكنتَ البدرَ تمَّ فزِيدَ نجماً

كما أوفَى بغُرّته الجوادُ

And you were the full moon perfected so a star increased

As its orb was completed by generosity

فعشْ واذخرْه للعافين كهفاً

وخيرُ ذخيرةِ الجسم الفؤادُ

So live and reserve it for the living as a cave

And the best reserve of the body is consciousness
