1. أنشُدُ من عهد ليلَى غيرَ موجودِ

    وأقتضيها مُعاراً غيرَ مردودِ

    I recite from the era of Layla though it no longer exists

    And I seek it on loan though it will not be returned

  2. رِضاً بليلَى على ما كان من خُلُقٍ

    جَعْدٍ ونَيلٍ كثيرِ المنّ معدودِ

    Content with Layla as she was of manners

    Curly-haired and soft, abundantly gentle and docile

  3. من العزيزات أنساباً وأخبيةً

    في صفوةِ البيتِ حلَّت صفوةَ البيدِ

    Of the precious ladies, noble genealogies and bashful

    In the elite of the house, she settled, the elite of the tents

  4. محبُّها قد قضى في كلِّ معركةٍ

    قصيّةٍ عن بلاغِ الأينُقِ القُودِ

    Her lover had triumphed in every battle

    Cut short from the eloquence of the delicate tied up

  5. تُقَلُّ من غيرِ ذُلٍّ عند أُسرتها

    بين القبابِ المنيعاتِ الأباديدِ

    She moves with no humiliation among her family

    Between the lofty impenetrable tents

  6. كم ليلةٍ قد أرتني حشوَها قمراً

    وجوهُها البيضُ في أبياتِها السُّودِ

    How many a night has shown me its interior as the moon

    And their white faces among its black verses

  7. من كلِّ هيفاءَ إلا الرِّدفَ تحسبهُ

    غصناً من البان معقوداً بجلُمودِ

    I reckoned every slander about her except spite

    As a bough of acacia gum tied up with resin

  8. ما مستقيماتها للريح مائلةٌ

    لكن براهينُ عِزٍّ لي المواعيدُ

    Her upright stance inclines not to the wind

    But proofs of honor are my trysts

  9. لُثْنَ العناقيدَ فوقَ الخُمرِ واختلفت

    شِفاهُهنَّ على ماءِ العناقيدِ

    The clusters hung over the wine and their lips disagreed

    Over the water of the clusters

  10. ورُحن يَرمِين بالألحاظ مقتَنَصاً

    فما تصيَّدنَ إلا أنفُسَ الصِّيدِ

    And they tossed looks my way, hunting

    But they hunted nothing but the prey itself

  11. يا ليلَ لو كان داءً تقتُلين به

    داويتِه كان داءً غيرَ مقصود

    O night, if it were an illness that killed you

    I would have cured it - an unintentional illness

  12. اليأسُ أروحُ لي والصبرُ أرفقُ بي

    من نومِ ليلكِ عن همّي وتسهيدي

    Despair is more peaceful for me and patience more gentle

    Than your night's sleep from my worries and turning over

  13. ما ماء دِجلةَ ممزوجاً بغدركُمُ

    وإن شفَى بارداً عندي بمورودِ

    Neither the water of the Tigris mixed with your betrayal

    Though cooling by my fever if filtered

  14. ولا صَبَا أرضِكم هبَّت تروّحني

    وفاءَ وعدٍ لكم بالمطلِ مكدودِ

    Nor the clouds of your land that blew to refresh me

    Keeping a promise to you with expected gifts

  15. حسبي سَمحتُ بأخلاقي فما ظفِرت

    في الناس إلا بأخلاقٍ مَناكيدِ

    It suffices me, I was indulgent in my morals yet I succeeded

    Among people only in hostile morals

  16. وصاحبٍ لينُ أيَّامي وشدّتُها

    فَرقٌ له بين تقريبي وتبعيدي

    And a gentle companion for my days and their severity

    Distinguishing for him between my drawing near and distance

  17. يمشي ابنَ دأيةَ في ظلِّ الرجاءِ معي

    وفي النوائبِ يعدو عدوةَ السِّيدِ

    The son of Ta'abbata Sharran walks in my shadow of hope

    And in tribulations he takes off running like a wolf

  18. وواسعِ الدار عالي النارِ يُوهمني

    خِصبَ القِرَى بين مبثوثٍ ومنضود

    Of spacious house, blazing fire, he deludes me

    The fertility of villages between scattered and heaped

  19. يهوَى الأناشيدَ أن يَكذبِن سُمعَتَه

    ولا يَهشُّ لأعواضِ الأناشيدِ

    The songs desire to belie their reputation

    And do not quake before the substitutions of songs

  20. أغشاه غِشيانَ مجلوبٍ يُغَرُّ بما

    رأَى وأُصرَف عنه صَرفَ مطرودِ

    Engulfed by an overwhelming delusion, tempted by what

    He saw and I am turned away, turned away forcefully

  21. يجودُ مِلءَ يدي بالوعد يمطلُهُ

    والمطلُ من غير عُسرٍ آفةُ الجودِ

    He promises plenty with his hands but delays it

    And delay without hardship is the bane of generosity

  22. فَدَى الرجالُ وإن ضنّوا وإن سمحوا

    فتىً يهونُ عليه كلُّ موجودِ

    The men offer themselves even if they are stingy and generous

    A man who finds every existent thing insignificant

  23. لا يحسب المالَ إلا ما أفاد به

    ثناءَ محتسبٍ أو ذِكرَ محمودِ

    He counts money only what benefits him

    The praise of a judge or a celebrated mention

  24. كم جَرَّبَ المدحُ أملاكاً وجرَّبه

    فصبَّ ماءً وحَتُّوا من جلاميدِ

    How the flattery has tried assets and tried them

    Pouring water and they were heated from frozen rocks

  25. أملسُ لا عِرضُه الوافي بمنتقَصٍ

    يوماً ولا مالهُ الواقي بمعبودِ

    Unblemished, his faithful ally not accusing

    A day, nor his money protecting a worshipped one

  26. مَن سائلٌ بالكرام السابقين مَضَوا

    وخلَّفوا الذِّكرَ من إرثٍ وتخليدِ

    Who asks about the preceding generous ones who passed away

    And left mention as inheritance and eternity

  27. هذا الحسينُ فخذ عيناً ودعْ خَبراً

    من الروايات عنهم والأسانيدِ

    This is Al-Husayn - take an eyeful and leave an account

    Of the reports about them and the chains of narration

  28. من ساكني الأرضِ قبلَ الماءِ من قدمٍ

    وعامريها وما ذَلَّت لتشييدِ

    Of the inhabitants of the earth before water, since early times

    And its builders, who bowed to its construction

  29. كم حاملٍ منهُمُ فضلاً حمائلُهُ

    تُحَلُّ عن عاتق بالتاج معقودِ

    How many carrying superiority, their litters

    Loosen from the shoulder by a crown laden

  30. لم يبرحوا أجبُلَ الدنيا وأبحرَها

    أصليْن من شاهقٍ منها وممدودِ

    They did not leave the mountains and seas of the world

    Original ones, towering and extended

  31. وحسَّنوا في الندى أخلاقَ حلمهمُ

    إِنَّ الندى في النُّهى كالماء في العودِ

    And they beautified in dew the morals of their forbearance

    Dew in restraint is like water in aloeswood

  32. يا آل عبدِ الرحيم اختار صُحبتَكم

    تأنُّقي في اختياراتي وتجويدي

    O Family of ‘Abd al-Rahim, I chose your companionship

    My refinement in my selections and compositions

  33. أُحِبُّكم وتُحبُّوني وما لَكُمُ

    فضلٌ ورُبَّ ودودٍ غيرُ مورودِ

    I love you and you love me, and you have

    No grace over a devoted lover with no clouds

  34. قرابةٌ بيننا في فارسٍ وَصفتْ

    عنّي وعنكم طهاراتِ المواليدِ

    There is kinship between us through a noble ancestor who

    Clarified for me and you the purities of noble births

  35. لا زال مدحِيَ ميراثاً يقابلكم

    عنّي إذا الشعرُ في آذانكم نُودِي

    My praise still reciprocates you on my behalf

    When poetry is sung into your ears

  36. بكلِّ حسناء لو أحفَشتُها برزتْ

    للخاطبين بروزَ الغادةِ الرُّودِ

    By every beautiful woman, if I wooed her, she would come out

    To the suitors with the appearance of a fawn

  37. من نسج فكري تردّ العارَ دونكُمُ

    ردّ السهام نبتْ عن نسج داودِ

    From the weaving of my thoughts it deflects blame from you

    Deflecting the arrows, cultivated from David's weavings

  38. ما أنبتتْ لِيَ شَجْراءُ الرجاء بكم

    خِصباً وما كرَّ دهرٌ عودةَ العيدِ

    The fertile land of hopes did not grow for me through you

    Fertility, and time never again returned the feast

  39. وما تباحُ المُدَى مشحوذةً أبداً

    صبيحةَ النحرِ من نحرٍ ومن جيدِ

    And the extended eulogies are never loosened

    The morning of sacrifice, neither by sacrifice nor generosity
