لا تَلمَسُ الشمسَ يدُ
فما يَرُدُّ الحسَدُ
Do not covet the sun with your hand,
For envy brings no gain.
ما لمُريدِ حسنِها
إلا الأسى والكمدُ
The admirer of its beauty
Gets only sorrow and gloom.
يَفْنَى نزولاً ولها
علاؤها والخُلُدُ
It sets and rises, eternal,
While men fade and die.
أرى نفوساً ضَلَّةً
تَنشُدُ ما لا تَجِدُ
I see lost souls
Seeking what they'll never find,
تحسَب بالكسب العلا
ءَ والعلاءُ مُولَدُ
Thinking status and fortune
Are theirs to claim and assign.
أفضَحُها مفنِّدٌ
لو سدّ غيظاً فَنَدُ
But time exposes their folly -
Would that their rage might end!
وكلّ قلبٍ قُرحة
يشِفُّ عنه الجسدُ
Each wounded heart
Is balméd by the body's mend.
أبرُدُهُ بَعذَلي
لو أن ناراً تَبْرُدُ
It cools my torment
If fire itself grew cold.
هيهات من دوائها
وداؤها محمَّدُ
Alas no cure for this sickness
Except where Muhammad told.
فات على أطماعِهِ
حمى العيون الفرقدُ
Gone - youth's lost chance,
The prime of life now past.
شَوَّقها لحاقَهُ
جَهلُ الحظوظِ المسعِدُ
False hope once nourished
By luck's embrace outlasted.
ونِعَمٌ نابتةٌ
مع الربيع جُدُدُ
Green shoots of spring
Renew with nature's gifts.
حدَّثَها أضغاثَها
هذا السرابُ المُوقَدُ
Vain mirages lit desire
Till day reality lifts.
والصبحُ في تكذيبها
إن بلغوه الموعدُ
The moon is lost, the blackest night
Where once your white torch burned.
يا حاسدي محمّدٍ
لا تطلبوه واحسُدوا
Most generous, most true of you
May rightly be "Chief" earned.
شريعةٌ مورودةٌ
لو أصدَرتْ مَنْ يَردُ
His signs need nomimicry.
The bare path shows the test.
منّتكُمُ جدودُكم
أَن السبيلَ جَدَدُ
No armor saves when mighty claws
Set out to tear your breast.
تنكّبوا فإنما
على الطريق الأسدُ
Truest heart, tied tight
Against the spears of blame.
أغيدُ لا يُنجِي الرقا
بَ من يديه الجَيَدُ
No treasure's left unsacked
Where once a caravan came.
أوفَى على مَرقَبِه
لكفّه ما يرصُدُ
Most binding oaths he makes
Are spread without provisions laid.
أزبُّ ما مِن قِرَّةٍ
خِيطت عليه اللِّبدُ
Blood money at his feet,
Ransoms by his hand are paid.
إذا غدا لسفَرٍ
أقسمَ لا يُزَوَّدُ
When foes united and you alone,
What can be done? Lead on!
الناجياتُ عنده
وذيَّةٌ ونَقَدُ
Confusion reigns in their conceit,
The guide o'erturned, the goal gone.
قد قلتُ لمّا أجمعوا
وأنت عنهم مفردُ
Perfection cannot be divided -
Take all or none instead.
تخبِطُ عشواؤهُمُ
ما فعل المُقَوِّدُ
uniqueness never to repeat,
While earth gives birth to dead.
البدرُ في أمثالها
حنادساً يُفتقَدُ
Pilgrim sheds his garb but there
No nakedness is found.
ضاع بياضُ ناركم
والليلُ بعدُ أَسْودُ
O Kufa where we dwelt,
Mysterious treasure mound!
أكرمُكم أحقُّكم
بأن يقالَ سيّدُ
Just one man, one land
And riders crossing motions vast.
دلَّ على آياتهِ
فما لنا نُقلِّدُ
Their goal: to come and touch his tomb
And help heal troubles past.
وناقصُ الشِّكة مض
عوف الحشا مُعَوِّدُ
Swift mounts they race here,
Yearning burning in their chests.
صمّ القنا الصِّلابِ من
خَوَرِهِ تَقَصَّدُ
My heart melts like tallow,
Spent wicks give no warmth left.
يطولها شوارعاً
وهو لَقىً موسَّدُ
What solace patience gives!
Though fate may quickly toss.
إذ الكمالُ كلُّه
في جسد يحدَّدُ
When absent who needs credit
For triumphs gained and lost?
ما تَلدِ الأرضُ كذا
والأرضُ بعدُ تَلِدُ
How long till we meet again?
All things have their season.
قل بني الآراب تُج
فَى والمنى تُشرَّدُ
O bringer of such bounty -
Gifts received pass reason.
والحاج يُلقَى دونه
نّ اللَّحِزُ المُزَيِّدُ
My excess spoiled your grace.
Giving sometimes means less.
الكوفةَ الكوفةَ يا
مغوّرٌ يا منجدُ
Hold back? But to give all -
Listen, update I bring.
ما الناس إلا رجلٌ
والأرض إلا بلدُ
Forever to apprise anew!
Beyond all current sorrows
مَن راكبٌ مُربِعةً
تمَّ عليها العُددُ
Glad tiding that give joy so true!
Not fasting in consolation
موضوعةَ الرحل تُل
سّ حَكْمَها وتَرِدُ
Of your death - forbid!
Years elude all count, only
يَمُدُّ قِيد الرمح ظ
لاً قَصرُها المشيَّدُ
God's timelessness amid.
If lifetimes lived in fortune,
تحمله مُخِفَّةً
ولو علاها أُحُدُ
Ever sitting at your side...
I'd never stand here humbled,
تَخدّ في الصخر ملا
طِمَ عليها تَخِدُ
Ready your greatness to confide.
Maybe I'll rise tomorrow?
عَجْلَى إذا ما الساق صا
دت ما تُثيرُ العَضُدُ
Today's brother is tomorrow's kin.
This life a simple stopping point,
لم يدر لحظُ ضابطٍ
ما رجلُها وما اليدُ
Each night leads to new dawn.
بلّغ بلغتَ راشداً
تسرِي ويحدو مُرشدُ
شوقاً يقُضُّ نَبلُهُ ال
أضلاعَ وهي زَرَدُ
دام على حصاة قل
بي ويذوب الجلمدُ
أفنى الوَقودُ كبدي
فهل يُحسّ المُوقِدُ
كم يُسعِد الصبرُ تُرَى
بعدك خان المسعِدُ
على مَن الفضلُ وقد
فارقتَه يعتمِدُ
يا طولَ ذمّي للنوى
هل من لقاءٍ يُحمَدُ
متى فقد طال المدى
لكلِّ شيء أمدُ
يا باعثَ النعمى التي
آياتُها لا تُجحَدُ
لو كُتِمتْ تطلَّعتْ
من حسن حالي تَشهْدُ
كانت سَدادَ رحْلةٍ
أصيب فيها المقصِدُ
رمَمتَ منها ثُلَماً
ما خلتُها تُسدّدُ
علّك من مطليَ بال
شكر عليها تَجدُ
ما كان تقصيراً فهل
يقتصر المجتهدُ
لكنّها عارفةٌ
من الثناء أزيدُ
أفسدني إفراطُها
بعضُ العطاء يُفسدُ
والجود ما أسرفَ وال
إمساك فيه أجودُ
والآن رثَّتْ مُسْكةٌ
فاسمع لها أجدِّدُ
تأتيك بشرى ما تسو
د أبداً وتسعَدُ
وما تصوم مُرضِياً
بقاك أو تُعيِّدُ
سنينَ لا يضبطه
نّ في الحساب عَدَدُ
إن عافني دهرٌ أقو
مُ أبداً ويقُعِدُ
عن المثول اليوم ما
بين يديك أُنشِدُ
فربّما قمتُ غداً
إنّ أخا اليومِ غدُ
