1. وكنتُ وأيّام المزار رخيّةٌ

    عليَّ ورُخصُ الوصل لي فيك يُطمعُ

    And I was—when the days of visiting were easy for me,

    and easy union with you raised my hopes—

  2. أعِزُّ فلا أعطي الهوى فيك حقَّه

    من الشكر والمعطَى مع الكفرِ يُمنعُ

    too proud to give my love for you its rightful due

    of gratitude; what is bestowed is withheld when met with ingratitude.

  3. فلما استردّ الدهرُ منّي عطاءه

    وعادت شُعوبٌ في الهوى تتصدعُ

    Then, when Time reclaimed from me its gifts,

    and branches in love began once more to split apart,

  4. قعدتُ مع الهجران أبكيه نادماً

    وأسأل عنه ماضياً كيف يرجعُ

    I sat with estrangement, weeping for it in remorse,

    and asked after it, now past: how can it return?
