اُنظرْ معي فهْي نظرةٌ أَمَمُ

أعَلَمُ السفحِ ذلكَ العلَمُ

Look at me, for it is a wishful glance

I know the hilltop, that is the flag

أنت بريءً ممّا تُشَبِّهُهُ ال

عينُ وطرفي بالدمع متَّهَمُ

You are innocent of what the eyes liken it to

While my eyelids are blamed for tears

يُطربني اليومَ للمنازل ما

أسأَر عندي أيّامُها القُدُمُ

Today, the homes enchant me for what

Their ancient days conceal

ويَطَّبيني على فصاحةِ شك

واي إليها ربوعُها العُجُمُ

And their unintelligible eloquence makes me love

Their meadows and foreigners

عليّ يا دار جهدُ عيني وما

عليّ عارٌ أن تبخلَ الدِّيَمُ

It is upon me, O home, the effort of my eye, and I have

No shame that the ruins are stingy

لكِ الرضا من جِمام أدمعِها

وذمُّها إن سقَى ثراكِ دمُ

Be content with the tears of my eyelids

And blame them if they watered your soil with blood

أما وعهدِ الغادين عنك وأش

جانٍ بواقٍ لي فيكِ بعدهُمُ

By the covenant of those who left you and the

Passion of one loyal to me in you after them

وما أطال الصِّبا وأعرضَ من

عيشٍ كأن اختلاسَه حُلُمُ

By a life whose pleasures were stolen by time

As if its theft were a dream

وسرِّ حُبٍّ قد سار عندَكِ في

أمانةِ التُّرب وهو منكتِمُ

By the secret of a love that walked in

The confidence of your soil, while it hides

ما كان ما قاله المُسِرُّون عن

ريم وعنّي إلا كما زعموا

What the slanderers said about Layla and about me

Was only as they claimed

هل هو إلا أن قيل جُنَّ بها

نَعَمْ على كلّ ما جَنَتْ نَعَمُ

Is it not that they said I was possessed with love for her

Yes, by all that I was possessed

كفَى بلوم العُذّال أنهُمُ

عابوا فقالوا بضدّ ما علموا

It is enough that the blamers blamed me

And spoke the opposite of what they knew

وأنّ شقّ العصا لهمْ ولها

طاعةُ قلبي تقضِي وتحتكمُ

فكان منّي مكانَ يرتقبُ ال

خليعُ تحت الدجى ويحتشِمُ

بتنا وأطواقُنا يدٌ ويدٌ

ورُسْلُ أشواقِنا فمٌ وفَمُ

We kissed and our necks were hand in hand

And messengers of our passions mouth to mouth

يَلُفُّني الغصنُ أو تضاجعني ال

دميةُ أجنِي طوراً وألتزمُ

The branch makes me dizzy or the doll makes me sleep

I pick for a while and cling

حتى إذا الفجر كان خيطيْنِ أو

كادت عقودُ الجوزاء تنفصمُ

Until dawn was two threads or

The Pleiades' knots were about to untie

غارت على أختها الغزالةُ فاس

تيقظتُ لا بانةٌ ولا صنَمُ

The gazelle was jealous of her sister

So I woke up, neither effigy nor idol

عادٌ من الدهرِ مرَّةً إن وفا

خانَ وإنْ مَنَّ عادَ ينتقمُ

Time comes back again and again, if it betrays

And if it favors, it takes revenge

ما أشبه الناسَ بالزمان وما

أقلَّ فَرقاً بالغدر بينهمُ

How alike people are to time, and how

Little difference in betrayal between them

كنتُ ألوم الإخوان شيئاً إذا ال

تاثوا وأشكوهُمُ إذا صَرَموا

I used to blame the brethren for something when they

Were in error and complain of them when they turned away

وأحسب البخلَ والسماحة لي

غايةَ ما في العُقوق عندهُمُ

And I thought stinginess and generosity were to me

The ultimate in their disloyalty

فاليوم لثمي في ظهر كلّ يدٍ

ليس دمي من بنانها العَنَمُ

But today I kiss the back of every hand

That is not stained with my blood

يا دينَ قلبي من مالكين له

بالودّ حلفُ الشقاء عبدُهُمُ

O religion of my heart, of those who possessed it

With affection, the ordeal of misery enslaved it

يحفظهم خائنين عهدي ودَا

نِين وفي وُجدِهم وإن عَدِموا

Saving them while traitors to my covenant

And professing love while lacking it

وهم جفاءً عليّ أفئدةٌ

صخرٌ وجورٌ صِرْفٌ إذا قسَموا

And when harsh they are stony hearts

Bigotry if they divide

لا نوبُ الدهرِ حينَ تطرُقُهم

تُنصفني منهم ولا النِّعَمُ

Neither the turns of time when it turns on them

Makes me equal with them, nor blessings

عندهم الغدرُ بي على القُلِّ وال

كُثر وعندي الوفاءُ والكرمُ

With them betrayal of me is little and much

And with me loyalty and generosity

لي بعضُهم غيرَ خالصٍ ولمن

دامَجهم خالصين كلُّهُمُ

Some of them are insincere to me and those

I counted as sincere, all of them

بين فؤادي فيهم وبين فمي

شواجرٌ في الحِفاظ تختصمُ

Between my heart toward them and my mouth

Disputes in keeping secrets contend

فالقلبُ فيهم خالٍ من الذمّ وال

عَتبُ عليهم فيَّ يزدحِمُ

So the heart is empty of blame and

Reproach on them crowds in me

يا ربِّ هب لي يقظانَ منهم إذا

ناموا وعدلاً في الود إن ظلَموا

O Lord, grant me wakefulness when they sleep

And justice in affection when they are unjust

واسمح لنفسي بحفظ نفس ابن أي

يوبَ فما ذاك في الإخاء هُمُ

And allow my soul to preserve the soul of the son of Job's mother

For that is not difficult in brotherhood

أبلج خاضت بي الدجى غُرّةٌ

منه وداست بيَ العلا قدَمُ

Dawn shone on me in surprise

And walked the heights with steps

برٌّ وحظّي المقسومُ لي من بني

أمّي عُقوقٌ ومن أبي يُتُمُ

Righteousness and my allotted share from the children

Of my mother are disloyalty, and from my father, orphanhood

فاستنصرتْه ليَ العلا فوفتْ

كفٌّ يمينٌ وصارمٌ خَذِمُ

So the heights supported me with

A helping hand, a sword, and piercing blades

وقام دوني لا عامل الرمح مر

دود ولا السابريّ منحطِمُ

And he stood in front of me, neither using the spear violently

Nor the sharp sword crushingly

تأبَى له نفسه وطينتُهُ

أن يُتقاضَى أو تخفرَ الذِّمَمُ

His soul and nature refused

To take legal proceedings or demeaning debts

وشيمةٌ حرة مضى معَها

والمرءُ حيث ارتمت به الشيمُ

And dignified freedom went with him

While man is where honor casts him

لا طائش الحِلم إن هفا الطيشُ بال

ناس ولا ضيِّقٌ إذا برِمُوا

Neither reckless nor intolerant when people are hostile

Of a group who are thankful when given

من معشر يشكرون إن رزقوا

أو يحسنون الظنون إن حرموا

Or think good thoughts when deprived

Strangers to the world who make its harshness

قروم دُنيا يغشون شدّتها

مَسَاكِناً لا تُلينها القُحَمُ

Homes that picks cannot soften

All old but strong, gathered,

كل عتيق البُزُول ملتحم ال

جُلْبَةِ تعيَا برأسِهِ الخُطُمُ

With heads impenetrable to picks

A man does not control eating his companion

لا يملك الرحلُ أكلَ غاربِه

ولا يعفِّي أوبارَهُ الجلَمُ

Nor does resolution relieve his camel of mange

They built their homes on their glory

شادوا على مجدهم بيوتَهُمُ

وما بنى المجدُ ليس ينهدمُ

And glory does not build to collapse

Neither from you were the paths of its visitors severed

لا عُطِّلتْ منك سُبْلُ سؤددِهم

تنهجُ آثارَها وتلتقِمُ

To follow their traces and gather them up

Nor was the virtue missed that the heights

ولا عدِمتَ الفضلَ الذي شهِدتْ

لك العلا فيه أنك ابنُهُمُ

Testified you had, that you were their son

And the days met you healing

واستقبلتك الأيّام تجبُرُ من

جِراحِها سالفاً وتلتحِمُ

Past wounds, and clinging together

Baring the aspects of fortune that

تسفِر عن أوجه السعود التي

كانت حياءً بالأمس تلتثمُ

Were shy yesterday, veiling themselves

The Nile pleads their crime to your pardon

يشفَعُ في ذَنبها إلى عفوك ال

نيروز فاصفح وإن طغى الجُرُمُ

So forgive even if the crime is great

And accept my guarantee, for after today they are

فاقبل ضماني فإنها لك بع

د اليوم فيما ترومُهُ خَدَمُ

For you, in what you seek, servants

And listen briefly to one who has long

واسمع على الاختصار طارقةً

لها طوالاً سوالفٌ قُدُمُ

Tales, ancient days

Time delayed them from reaching their

أخَّرها الدهرَ عن بلوغ مدا

هُنَّ وهمٌّ ماتت له الهِمَمُ

Aspirations, and worry whose ambitions died

And misfortunes that squeeze the heart when

ونُوَبٌ تُلجِم الفؤادَ إذا ال

ألسن كفَّتْ غُروبَها اللجُمُ

Tongues fall silent at their setting

And words are harvested from hearts, for when

والقولُ يُجنَى من القلوب فإن

غاضَ دمُ القلبِ صَوَّحَ الكِلمُ

The heart's blood recedes, speech falters
