1. ليتَك لمّا تكن مُسعِدا

    أو مصلحاً لم تكن المفسدا

    I wish you were not happy

    Or a peacemaker, rather than a corrupter

  2. كنتُ كثيراً بك فيما يَرَى

    ظنِّي فكثَّرتً عديدَ العدا

    I used to talk much about you from my perspective

    So I multiplied your many enemies

  3. وشَى وقد قدَّمتَهُ رائداً

    لا تبعث الظلمة مسترشِدا

    He slandered while presenting himself as a guide

    Do not send an oppressor to be guided

  4. يسومني الغدرَ بعهد اللِّوى

    ما حقُّ من يغدِرُ أن يَعهَدا

    He has betrayed the covenant of love

    It is not right for a traitor to make a pact

  5. غيرِي أبو الألوانِ في حبِّه

    يشكو الهوى اليومَ ويسلو غدا

    Another than I, Abu Al-Alwan, complains of love

    Lamenting passion today and tomorrow as well

  6. أصبو إلى طَيْبةَ من بابلٍ

    ما أقربَ الشوقَ وما أبعدا

    Yearning for Taibah from Babylon

    Oh how near is yearning, and how far!

  7. يا فارسَ الغيداء يبغي مِنىً

    بلِّغْ بلغتَ الرشأَ الأغيدا

    O knight of glory, he wants from me

    Deliver my messages to the nobles

  8. يا حبذا الذكرى وإن أسهرتْ

    بعدك والدمعُ وإن أرمَدا

    Oh how I cherish the memories even if

    After you they kept me awake and tearful

  9. لا تأخذِ النَّفْرَ بتفريقنا

    فربّما عاد لنا موعِدا

    Do not be influenced to divide us

    Perhaps a meeting will return to us

  10. بالغور دارٌ وبنجدٍ هوىً

    يا لهف من غار لمن أنجدا

    In Al-Ghor there is a house, and in Najd passion

    Oh longing for one who took shelter

  11. ما كان سَلمِي يوم فارقتكم

    يا سَلْمَ منّي حاملاً أجلدا

    My peace was not on the day I left you

    Oh peace, bearer of smoothness

  12. سجيّةٌ في الصبر عَوَّدتُها

    قلبيَ والقلبُ وما عُوّدا

    I disciplined my heart to patience

    Though the heart was not disciplined

  13. لم تُدنِني الأيامُ من عدلها

    قطّ فألقى الجَورَ مستبعَدا

    The days did not bring me close to their justice

    So I encountered tyranny, shunned

  14. وإنما يُنكِرُ من عَيشِهِ

    أنكدَهُ مَنْ عَرَفَ الأرغدا

    He who knows restful life will deny

    His life embittered

  15. حوادثٌ أعجبُ من كرِّها

    أن أتشكَّاها وأن أُحسَدا

    Wonders stranger than I hate

    That I complain of them, and envy

  16. ليتَ بني الدنيا التي لا تَرَى

    لي نسباً منها ولا مَولدا

    I wish the world that cannot be seen

    Had no lineage or birth for me

  17. كفَّتهُمُ عنِّيَ أو ليتُهمْ

    كانوا جميعاً للحسين الفدى

    They sufficed for me, or would that they

    Were all for Al-Hussain the sacrifice

  18. للقمرِ الفردِ وهل مالكٌ

    في الأفْق غيرُ البدرِ أن يُفردَا

    For the peerless full moon - what angel

    In the horizon rivals the full moon?

  19. لا يَحسَبُ الطيِّبَ مِن ماله

    ما لم يكن معترضاً للجَدَأ

    The good man does not account his wealth

    Unless it helps him at need

  20. وكان أغنَى حسباً عندهُمْ

    من لم يزل أفقرَ منهم يدا

    And the richest to them was who

    Remained the poorest of hand

  21. والأبيضا الرأي إذا ما شكا

    خابطُ ليلٍ رَأيَهُ الأسوَدا

    The fair-minded, when he complains

    Of the darkness, his view turns black

  22. وفارس القَولةِ لم يَستقمْ

    في ظهرها الفارسُ إلا ارتدى

    The rider of the sand dune did not stand

    Straight on its back but slid

  23. وسالك الخطبِ وقد أظلمتْ

    مَحجَّةٌ بالنجم لا تُهتَدَى

    The suitor of glory, when dark clouds

    Covered the stars he could not be guided

  24. ما شِيمَ منكم صارمٌ مغمَدٌ

    إلا وأمضى منه ما جُرِّدا

    It was not the custom of any sharp swordsman among you

    To remain sheathed without being drawn

  25. ولا قَضَى اللّهُ على سيِّد

    قضاءَهُ إلا اجتبَى سيِّدا

    And God did not decree for any master

    His decree but that He chose a master

  26. إن بدأا تمّم أو نَقصُوا

    أنعمَ أو حطُّوا عُلاً شيَّدا

    Whether they began and completed, or fell short

    Whether they did good or cast down a building

  27. كأنه أُرضِعَ ثديَ النُّهى

    أو شاب من حُنكتِهِ أمردا

    As if he was suckled on sin’s teat

    Or a youth whose wisdom was innate

  28. لا عاقَ أنوارَك يا بدرَهُمْ

    ما يَنقُصُ البدرَ إذا زُيِّدا

    Your light was not dimmed, O full moons

    The full moon is not diminished when increased

  29. ولا أغبَّتكم على عادِها

    ما أفطر الصائمُ أو عيَّدا

    Nor did your absence in its normal course

    Prevent the fasting or festivities

  30. بواكرٌ من مِدَي تَقتَفِي

    في صونها آثارَكم في الندى

    Early fruits of soft rain, emulating

    In protecting it your marks in the dew

  31. تجلو على الألباب أحسابَكُم

    بوادياً في حَلْيِها عُوَّدا

    Clarifying to minds your stature

    In valleys accustomed to beauty

  32. تبقَى على الدهر وِساعَ الخُطَا

    في جَوْبِها الأرض طِوالَ المدى

    Remaining over ages despite the speed of meteors

    In its terrain the vast reach of earth

  33. يزيدها ترديدُها جِدَّةً

    ويُخلِقُ القولُ إذا رُدِّدا

    Repetition renews it

    And words create when repeated
