1. تروَّحَ من وَجرةَ الظاعنونا

    فكان الذي ساءَني أن يكونا

    The slanderers strayed from your sanctuary

    What pained me was that they were

  2. يميناً لَعَزَّ مرامُ السلو

    وِ أن تتركوا جنبَ خَبتٍ يمينا

    The supporters of those with base desires

    That you would abandon the side of the devout

  3. هوًى بعدَهم أَمَم لا يَري

    م يسألُ عنهم مَزارا شَطونا

    After them came nations that do not see right

    No shrine asks after them on the shore

  4. رميتُ بطَرفي ومِنْ مثلِ ما

    جنَى تتشكَّى القلوبُ العيونا

    I glanced with my eyes, and like what

    The hearts and eyes suffer from

  5. وراءَ الحُمول إلى أن قتل

    تُ شكَّ الفراقِ بعيني يقينا

    Behind the sand dunes until they killed

    My eyes are certain of the agony of parting

  6. وقد مات إنسانُها حَيرةً

    فغادرتُه في دموعي دفينا

    And her companion died confused

    So I left him in my tears buried

  7. وفي الركب معرفةُ الإنتساب

    إذا ما القدود ادَّعين الغصونا

    Among the caravan is knowing lineage

    When the pretentious claim the branches

  8. إذاَ شعشعتْ قبسَيْ وجهِها

    عنت لهما بقرُ الرمل عِينا

    When the light of her face radiates

    The eyelids mean for them the grit of sand

  9. تشير إليَّ بأُسروعةٍ

    تكاد وما أفصحتْ أن تُبينا

    She gestures to me hastily

    She almost speaks but cannot explain

  10. إذا خشِيتْ ظمأً لم يزل

    لها مددٌ من دمِ العاشقينا

    When thirsty, she has

    A supply from the blood of lovers

  11. أناملُ يُبسَطْنَ رُسْلَ الوفاءِ

    إلىَّ ويُقبَضْنَ للكاشحينا

    Her fingers extend the messengers of loyalty

    To me and withdraw for the ungrateful

  12. فتاةٌ رأت خطَلاً في القناة

    فألقتْ عليها اعتدالا ولينا

    A girl saw a palm tree in the canal

    So she leaned towards it gently

  13. تنغَّصُ بالوَردِ في خدّها

    إذا لم تجدْنِيَ في المجتنينا

    The roses in her cheek ache

    When she cannot find me among the gatherers

  14. إذا قلَّبتْ قَدَما أو يداً

    تمنَّت يَدِي قُلُباً أو بُرِينا

    When she moves a foot or a hand

    She wishes my heart or sight was near

  15. وتحت الرحالِ صعابُ الخُطا

    يدُسنَ سهولَ الفيافي حُزُونا

    Under the luggage are the difficulties of love

    Creeping into the plains of al-Fayy sadly

  16. سواءٌ عليهن يومَ الوداع

    حُذِينَ دَماً أو لبينٍ حُدِينا

    It is the same for them the day of farewell

    Covered in blood or clad in white

  17. إذا ما افتلين جِمام الريا

    ض أجممنها واجتررن البطونا

    When the camel litters are opened

    They gather them and roll up the sedan chairs

  18. ذوَى البقلُ من حرِّ أنفاسهنَّ

    كأنِّيَ أعديتُهنّ الحنينا

    The onions withered from their heated breath

    As if I deprived them of yearning

  19. حَمَى اللهُ والعربيُّ الذما

    مِ عهدا على وجرةٍ أن يمينا

    May God protect the blood and the one who holds it

    After a pact at the sanctuary to be loyal

  20. وحيَّا وُجوها تميميَّةً

    صرائحَ ما كان حسنٌ هجينا

    He brought life to Tameemi faces

    Whose honesty was not base

  21. مزجنَ الجمالَ بماء الحيا

    ءِ لو رَفَق المزجُ بالشاربينا

    They blended beauty with the water of life

    If only the blend was gentle with the drinkers

  22. وأَرهفنَ قبلُ نُصولَ العيون

    فقَدَّتْ ولم تتخاذلْ طعينا

    And they sharpened the tips of glances

    So it almost did not delay in disclosing

  23. ألا طرَباً يا مغنِّي القِلاصِ

    بهم وهيْ تصعُبُ حتى تلينا

    Oh, the disturbance, O singer of Qilas

    To them as she walks proudly until soft

  24. أعدْ إنّ ذكرَهُمُ عُوذَةٌ

    ولا تحسب الحبَّ إلا جُنونا

    Know that remembering them is a refuge

    And do not think love is anything but madness

  25. حنتني الخطوبُ فمالي ألوم

    على سرعة الهَرَمِ الأربعينا

    Old age has bent me so why should I blame

    The speed of forty years

  26. وأعجبُ من قبلها كيف شب

    تُ والشيبُ لا يستشير السنينا

    And I'm amazed how youth grew

    While grey hair does not consult years

  27. لئن أكثَرتْ عثَراتُ الخطوب

    بحظِّي جرائحَها والوهُونا

    If the stumbling of old age has increased

    Its wounds and weakness on me

  28. فقد فرَّ منّي لجَاجَ الزما

    نِ قارحُ عشرٍ أبيّاً حَرونا

    So the relentless passage of time has fled

    From me, stubbornly running for ten years

  29. سلِ الحادثاتِ على ما غمز

    ن جنبِيَ هل وَجَد الغمزُ لينا

    Ask the events if they have nudged

    My side - did the nudge find me soft?

  30. وهل سمعتْ لي إلى أن بَعث

    تُ في أهل ودِّي لشكوى أنينا

    And have you heard me moan to my people

    When she sent me to complain of groaning

  31. فياليتها قنِعتْ في الخطوب

    بنفسي ورفَّهت الآخَرينا

    I wish she had been satisfied in marriage

    With myself and ignored others

  32. وياليتَها حين لم تنتفع

    بحربيَ تجنحُ للسّلم حينا

    And I wish when she did not benefit

    From my war, she would incline to peace

  33. وقد جرَّبتْنِيَ قِرْنا فما

    وفَتْ بي فهلَّا اجتبتني قرينا

    She tested me for a while but was not

    Faithful to me - why did she not choose me as a pair?

  34. وفيتُ بدهري وأيامِه

    ولكن عجزتُ عن الحاسدينا

    I was faithful to my time and its days

    But I failed against the envious

  35. وكيف يصحُّ بياضُ الوفا

    ءِ يوما على كثرة الصابغينا

    How can the whiteness of loyalty remain

    One day when there are many who dye it?

  36. إذا كشفَ الخُبْرُ عيبَ الرجال

    فدامْج ودعْ كلَّ عيبٍ ظُنونا

    When experience exposes the faults of men

    Withdraw and leave every assumed fault

  37. لَحا اللهُ كلَّ أجبِّ الحفاظ

    بعيدا من الرشد عقلا ودينا

    May God dissolve the minds of every

    Morally corrupt preserver, far from righteousness and faith

  38. يعُدُّ الكرامةَ وجهَ النفاق

    ويرضَى بأفعاله أن يهونا

    Who considers dignity to be the face of hypocrisy

    And is content for his actions to be degraded

  39. تكلَّم حلوا وتحت الضلو

    عِ حنظلةُ الشرِّ للماضغينا

    They speak nicely but under the shadows

    Is the malice of evil for the chewers

  40. إذا بتَّ تأمنُ وثْباتهِ

    لقَاءً خَبَا لك خبْئا كمينا

    When you feel secure from his treachery

    He schemes against you, lying in wait

  41. كصلِّ الحَمَاطة يطوي الحِما

    مَ صعبا ويُعطيك باللمس هُونا

    Like folding a turban - he folds the mind

    With difficulty but gives you softness to the touch

  42. يبيتُ يراقبُ أنَّى تَعِنُّ

    له هفوةٌ منك حتى يخونا

    He stays up at night watching for

    Any mistake from you so he can betray

  43. تعلَّمتُ من غدره باسما

    بأنّ الوفاءَ مع القاطبينا

    I learned from his betrayal of Asma

    That loyalty to all is a myth

  44. عقاربُ أطمَعها لسبُها ال

    حُفاةَ فدبَّتْ إلى الناعلينا

    The claws of his greed are barefoot

    So they crept towards the sandaled

  45. علا حظُّهم ووهَى مجدُهم

    فقد وأَلوا من فمي سالمينا

    Their fortune is high while their glory is weak

    For they have received greetings from my mouth

  46. ولم أكُ مع غضَبي إن غضِبتُ

    لأهتِكَ إلَّا حريما مصونا

    I was not, if angry, one to violate

    Anything but a protected inviolable sanctuary

  47. وقد كنتُ أمضُغهم بالهجا

    ء لو أكلَ الشعرُ منهم سمينا

    I would have chewed them out with sarcasm

    If poetry gained weight from them

  48. أصون لساني عن الغادري

    ن صونَ طِلابي عن الباخلينا

    I guard my tongue from the treacherous

    Like guarding my students from the misers

  49. حرامٌ عليَّ اجتداءُ الرجا

    ل لا مانعين ولا باذلينا

    It is forbidden for me to impose on men

    With no refusal or giving

  50. إذا أنا يوما سألتُ الجوادَ

    حَرَصتُ غداً فسألتُ الضنينا

    If one day I asked the generous man

    The next day I would ask the miser

  51. بلَى إنَّ في آل عبدِ الرحيم

    مكارمَ تُفسَحُ للراغبينا

    Indeed, the family of ‘Abd al-Rahim possesses

    Virtues that give way to the seekers

  52. وبينَ بيوتهمُ للضيوفِ

    جِفاناً عِماقا وسَرْحا لَبونا

    And between their homes for guests

    Are expansive plains and soft sand

  53. وأنديةً تسَعُ السامعين

    قِرىً ووجوها تَضيف العيونا

    And gatherings that accommodate the listeners

    Towns and faces that welcome the eyes

  54. وسيبا يبَرُّ له المقسِمو

    ن لا وَرَدوا الماءَ إلا مَعينا

    And Siba whose water the distributors

    Only gave in portions, not freely

  55. ذَعَرتُ زماني بأسمائهم

    فكنَّ من الدهر دوني حصونا

    Their names startled my time

    So they were around me like fortresses

  56. وفرَّق عزُّهمُ النائبا

    تِ عنّي وقد بِتنَ حولي عِزينا

    Their might scattered the catastrophes

    From me though they spent the night around me

  57. وحمَّلتُ ثِقلي عميدَ الكفا

    ةِ منهم فكان القويَّ الأمينا

    I carried my burden to the pillar of power

    Among them, so the strong one was faithful

  58. من القومِ تُشرِق نيرانُهم

    على النجم إن طامنَ الموقدونا

    From the people, their fires shine

    On the stars if the kindlers slumber

  59. وتأرَجُ أرواحُ أبياتهم

    رسائلَ عنهم إلى الطارقينا

    And the spirits of their verses tremble

    Messages from them to those spending the night awake

  60. إذا ما رأيتَ ازدحامَ الحقوق

    عليهم عجبتَ لهم ثابتينا

    When you see rights crowded upon them

    You would wonder at their steadfastness

  61. ومَن أُذكِيتْ نارُه باليفا

    عِ في القُرِّ زاحمَه المصطلونا

    Whoever’s fire was ignited by loyalty

    In dearness pushed away the hoping

  62. مساميحُ لم يَعْرُقُوا بالعِضا

    ضِ أيديَهم في ندىً نادمينا

    Swords that did not sweat with fighting

    Their hands in bounty regretfully

  63. ولم يدفعوا في صدورِ الحقوق

    بعذرٍ وإن كان عذرا مبينا

    They do not ward off rights with

    Any excuse though it be clear

  64. يبيتون يعتلكون السيا

    طَ غَرْثَى وهم يطرُدون السنينا

    They spend the night riding the horses

    While they drive away the years

  65. طِوالُ الحمائلِ شُمُّ الأنوفِ

    يُهابون رؤيا ويُستحسَنونا

    Tall, with proud noses

    Fearing delusions but desiring praise

  66. إذا ركِبوا مسَحوا بالسحاب

    وإن نزلوا خلتَهم راكبينا

    When they rode they wiped the clouds

    And when they descended, the riders left

  67. تفرَّعَ من شَرَفَيْ عِيصهم

    مصابيحُ مجد تضيء الدجونا

    From the honor of their origin spring

    Lamps of glory that illuminate the darkness

  68. وكلُّ غلامٍ له حكمُه

    على الناس راضين أو كارهينا

    And every young man judges

    The people, whether satisfied or angry

  69. إذا سكتَ انتظروا ما يقولُ

    وإن قال دانَ له الناطقونا

    When you are silent they anticipate what you will say

    And if you speak, the speakers submit to him

  70. تألَّقَ ينعتُ حُسنا أباه

    وميضَ السيوف يصفْن القُيونا

    The excellence of his father sparkles, described

    By the flashing of the swords

  71. عميم الحيا كعميدِ الكفاةِ

    ولا يسِمُ الأرضَ إلا هَتونا

    A pillar of life like the pillar of power

    He does not walk the earth except calmly

  72. لك اللهُ مبتدِئا سؤدداً

    تراجعَ عن شأوِه المنتهونا

    May God grant you success, beginner and completer

    Those who despair turned back from his affair

  73. ومقتبل السِّنِّ فاق الكهولَ

    فجاءوا على عَقْبه يحتذونا

    And the young overtook the elders

    So they came after him emulating

  74. فدىً لك كلُّ قصير الفخا

    رِ يهرُب من ألسن الناسبينا

    So may every person with meager merit perish

    Who flees from the tongues of the critics

  75. له حسَبٌ في العلا أكمهٌ

    أَضلّتْ محجَّتُه المهتدينا

    His lineage in highness is enough for him

    His argument led astray the guided

  76. إذا أَيْتَم البخلُ سؤَّالهُ

    فيكفيك فينا أبو السائلينا

    When stinginess orphaned its request

    It is enough that among us is the father of the beggars

  77. وكلُّ ابنِ نقصٍ تمنَّى أبو

    ه أنّ البنات له بالبنينا

    And every son of deficiency wished his father

    That he had daughters instead of sons

  78. إذا ما رأى منك مِلءَ العيون

    رأى منه مِلءَ مُنَى الشامتينا

    When he saw your eyes filled

    He saw from it the fullness of the gloaters’ wishes

  79. لئن دبَّ دهرٌ إلى مجدكم

    بنقصٍ يُخافُ على الفاضلينا

    If a time crept toward your glory

    With deficiency, feared for the virtuous

  80. ومدَّ إليكم غَداةَ الصَّفاح

    شِمالا وكان يمدّ اليمينا

    And in the morning of reconciliation, stretched

    To you its left hand though it stretched out the right

  81. ونازعكم عن مقرّ العَلا

    ء غصباً وأنتم له مالكونا

    And disputed your position of highness

    Wrongfully though you are its masters

  82. فقِدْماً رآكم لأخلاقه

    بحسن خلائقكم فاضحينا

    When it saw your morals

    It exposed you by your excellent morals

  83. يصيب فتجبُرُ أيمانُكم

    مصابَ إساءته محسنينا

    It is afflicted, so your oaths

    Heal its injury, doing good

  84. ويأخذ منَّا وتُعطوننا

    ويجلُب فينا فتُستَنجَدونا

    It takes from us and you give us

    It brings need from us so you are sought for help

  85. ولا بدّ للمجدِ من عُوذةٍ

    إذا تمَّ تطرِفُ عنه العيونا

    Glory must have an amulet

    When complete, eyes avert from it

  86. وقد يُغمد السيفُ حتى يُشام

    ويَستتر البدرُ حتى يبينا

    The sword may be sheathed until drawn

    And the moon concealed until it appears

  87. يظنُّ العدا أنكم تخشعون

    وقد كذَّب اللهُ فيك الظنونا

    The enemy thinks you have yielded

    Though God has denied the assumptions about you

  88. ولا أبعد اللهُ غير التِّلاد

    إذا العرضُ أضحى منيعا مصونا

    May God not remove anything but submission

    When honor has become inaccessible and protected

  89. لئن سرَّ حاسدَكم أن يرى

    وفودَكُمُ مرَّةً مُخفِقينا

    If your envier was delighted to see

    Your delegations humbled occasionally

  90. فكم ليلةٍ دونكم أنقبت

    خوافي المناسم حتّى دَمينا

    Then how many nights beneath you were dug

    The hidden platforms until our blood flowed?

  91. ويوم سَمومٍ يردّ القطا

    على الماء كُدْراً وقد كُنَّ جُونا

    And a day of poison that drives

    The caravan back to the water turbid

  92. حملنا إليكم على الكره فيه

    جوادا أقبَّ وعَنْسا أَمونا

    We carried to you against our will

    A resistant camel and tranquil she-camel

  93. فردّ نوالُكم اليعملا

    تِ تُعيي كَراكِرُهن المتونا

    But your gifts returned the camels

    Their rolling carriages tiring them

  94. مواقرَ من جودكم لا تكاد

    تُقِلُّ قلائدَها والعُهونا

    Favors from your generosity that almost

    Do not lighten their necks and saddlebags

  95. كأنّا إذا أُشرعت للورود

    نحطُّ إلى الماء منها سَفينا

    As if when the roses are in bloom for us

    We descend to the water in them like boats

  96. فتلتُ من الناس حَبْليِ بكم

    وقلت لنفسي هم العالمونا

    So I have untied the rope of the people from you

    And said to myself “They are the world”

  97. وبعتكُمُ مهجتي طائعا

    فَوَ المجدِ ما كان بيعا غَبِينا

    And I sold my innermost being to you willingly

    By glory it was not an unprofitable sale

  98. ولم أك حاشاي في الغادرين

    بكم إن نبا الدهرُ والمارقينا

    I would not - God forbid - be among the treacherous

    By you, if time and the devious rebelled

  99. لساني لكم ذاك والنفسُ تلك

    مُضِيقين في المال أو مُوسِعينا

    My tongue is yours, and my soul too

    Whether you narrow or widen my livelihood

  100. وأعلمُ أنّي لكم سالمٌ

    وأعلمُ أنكُمُ تعلمونا

    And I know I am safe with you

    And I know you know

  101. وكم ليَ من مَثَلٍ سائرٍ

    تظلُّ العداةُ له آذنينا

    And how many examples come to me

    While the enemies listen enviously?

  102. لكم منه داعيةٌ في البلادِ

    ويعطيكمُ إمرةَ المؤمنينا

    You have among the lands an advocate

    Who gives you leadership of the faithful

  103. أقومُ لكم بقوانينه

    وأنطِقُ ما دمتمُ تسمعونا

    I stand by its principles

    And speak as long as you listen

  104. فلا عدِم الوفدُ ناديكُمُ

    ولا استَوْحشتْ سُبُلُ الرائدينا

    So may your call not miss a delegation

    Or the paths of guides be lonely

  105. وكان لكُمْ من عِثار الزمانِ

    لعاً يومَ يعثُر بالغافلينا

    And you had from the stumbling of fate

    A stumbling block the day it stumbled the heedless

  106. ولا راعنا قدَرٌ فيكُمُ

    فإنَّ بكم نعمةَ الله فينا

    We were not heedless of destiny among you

    For through you is God’s blessing upon us
