1. حسِبوا العلا خِفّاً وكُنَّ ثِقالا

    فتكلَّفوها ظالعين هزالا

    They considered glory easy, so be burdensome,

    And they tried to attain it, rising in decline.

  2. جُبناءُ شدُّوا الحُزْمَ لسنَ وثائقاً

    فيها ومدّوا البُوعَ لسنَ طوالا

    The cowards tightened the belts around their waists,

    Lashing them tightly, and lengthened their scabbards.

  3. لم يعقدوا للرأي فيها حَبوةً

    يوماً ولا اقتسموا عليها فالا

    Never did they tie wisdom into a knot there,

    Nor did they divide counsel among themselves.

  4. فتطلّعوا هُجناءَ من أطرافها

    فخرَ الشواحج تنسُبُ الأخوالا

    So they looked askance, shying from its edges,

    Thus the meteors fell, tracing their kindred.

  5. وسعى النجيبُ مقدِّماً بشياتها

    عنقاً وجسماً تحتها وجمالا

    And the noble one strove, stretching his shoulders

    And neck and body beneath it and his beauty.

  6. يقظان يستلب الكرى من عينه

    أنفٌ حماه أن يرى الأمثالا

    Wakeful, rescuing valor from his eyes-

    A nose protected him from seeing the like.

  7. فخراً بني عبد الرحيم بأنكم

    كنتم قبيلا للحسين وآلا

    Proudly-you, the clan of Abd al-Rahim-that you

    Were a tribe of al-Husayn and his house.

  8. ما زال حتى أوطئت أعقابُكم

    قِمَمَ العدا وعُددتُمُ أقيالا

    You did not cease until your heels stamped

    The summits of foes and you were counted knights.

  9. فإذا توضَّح يومُ أمرٍ مشكل

    يتوزَّع الأقوال والأعمالا

    When the command of a complex day is clear,

    Views and deeds will diverge.

  10. لقِيَ الورى جبناءَ عن أقلامه

    وسيوفِهِ ولقيتموه رجالا

    You met the cowards with your pens,

    Swords, and you met them as men.

  11. يلوي لنصركم المخاوفَ وحدَه

    صُلبَ الحصاةِ ويركب الأهوالا

    Alone he coils fears and the hardness of rock,

    Mounting terrors, riding giants.

  12. ما خُيِّرت بين اثنتين ركابه

    إلا تخيّر منهما الترحالا

    When offered a choice between two mounts,

    He chose only one for the roads.

  13. لا يمنع البطلَ المشهّر نفسَه

    حتى يهُبَّ فيقنصَ الأبطالا

    The hero baring his blade does not refrain

    Till he springs up and seizes the valiant.

  14. والأُسدُ لم تظفَر بحاجِ أكفّها

    حتى تجوبَ وتهجرَ الأغيالا

    The lion-her claws did not gain their want-

    Till she prowled and left the cubs.

  15. كم يومِ بينٍ قد حمدنا آجلاً

    منه ونحن نذمّه استعجالا

    How many a clear day have we blamed, fearing it,

    While we blamed it, impatient.

  16. نجني الإياب الحلوَ من شجراته

    ثمراً ونسكن آمنين ظلالا

    We pluck the sweet fruit from its trees,

    Then dwell secure in its shade.

  17. كاليوم ردَّ كرىً وشدّ سواعداً

    وأعاش أفئدةً وراش نبالا

    Like today, which repelled fate and braced

    Spirits' strength, arousing archers.

  18. طلعتْ سعودُك صارفاتٍ شمسه

    عنا ببدرٍ غاب أمسِ هلالا

    The dawn of your rule rose, its sun screening us

    With a full moon that set last night.

  19. وسط السماء وعاد غايةَ تِمِّهِ

    فأضاء لا كلفاً ولا ميّالا

    At the sky's midst it regained its perfect fullness,

    Lighting without trouble or tilting.

  20. دلّ الملوكَ عليك كونُك رِشدةً

    لهمُ وكون العالمين ضلالا

    It showed the kings you were their uprightness,

    Though the worlds were misguided.

  21. قد جرّبوا فرأَوك أثقبَ منهُمُ

    زَنداً وأرجحَ فيهمُ مثقالا

    They tried you and found you sounder than they,

    A surer, weightier measure.

  22. وإذا هُمُ وجدوا السيوف قصيرةً

    في موطنٍ وجدوا خُطاك طِوالا

    When they found their swords too short

    In one place, they found your steps longer.

  23. وسقيمة الأعضاء وُكِّلَ طِبُّها

    بك مذ تفاقم داؤها إعضالا

    And the limbs grew sickly, and their doctoring

    Was entrusted to you when their disease grew grave.

  24. ناطوا بها وقد التوت منشورةً

    من حسن رأيك ساعداً وقبالا

    They relied on them though the tents were folded,

    Through your fair opinion-aided and faced.

  25. وقليلة الخُطَّاب عند نشوزها

    إن تستطيع لها الرجالُ بِعالا

    And she of meager words, when she rebelled,

    The men could not restrain her, even joined.

  26. لا يطمع الكفءُ الشريفُ بسعيه

    فيها ولو ساق المهورَ وغالى

    No noble, honorable in his effort, hopes to win her,

    Though he proffer dowries or pay a brideprice.

  27. ما أبصرت جيباً يجاب لها ولا

    ذيلاً على غير الملوك مذالا

    You were granted her chastity, so you became her father,

    Her unlawful disdained, her lawful taken.

  28. أُعطيتَ عُذرتَها فكنت أباً لها

    عفت الحرام وقد أخذت حلالا

    You made your shoulders intimate with her,

    Unharmed though the horizon confined the new moon.

  29. أشعرتَ منها منكبيك خميلةً

    ما ضرّها حبسُ السماء بِلالا

    And the artisans marked her chest and flanks

    With the mark of the stamps-delicate and polished.

  30. وسَم الصوانعُ صدرَها ومتونَها

    وسْمَ الطوابع رقّةً وصقالا

    The eyes cannot rest on her a moment

    Before the sun's snatching a glance at the moon.

  31. لا تثبت العينان فيها لحظةً

    إلا اختطاف الشمس تنصف آلا

    When you filled visions with her fully,

    You filled hearts with majesty.

  32. ما إن ملأتَ بها النواظر شارةً

    حتى ملأت بها القلوب جلالا

    Cherishing beneath her a slender figure

    That emaciation's penetration left intact.

  33. مستبطناً من تحتها شفّافَةً

    جسماً يُخال من النحولِ خلالا

    And what had not been tested before her

    Rent veils wrapping mountains.

  34. ومُلُوثة ما جُرِّبتْ من قبلها

    خرَقُ العمائم تعصِبُ الأجبالا

    She took from the crown freshness, and it increased

    Her pride over it-her softness and beauty.

  35. أَخذَتْ من التاج النّضارَ وزادها

    فخراً عليه لينُها وجمالا

    She exulted in being bent compliantly to you

    And in her preciseness, imagined impossible.

  36. جلَّت بأن لُوِيت عليك وأنها

    من دقّةٍ حَقٌّ يُظنُّ محالا

    And across from the parents her sweat's threading

    A paternal uncle into the respected, venerable man.

  37. ومقابل الأبوين ينسُجُ عرقُه

    عمّاً إلى متن الوجيه وخالا

    With what is ransomed by sons and specially chosen-

    The daughters' sheltering themselves in cloaks and glory.

  38. مما يفدّى بالبنين وتُصطفَى

    أزُرُ البناتِ براقعاً وجِلالا

    And marriage is forbidden, though needy,

    Valuing in poverty the price of possessions.

  39. ويَحِلّ بيعُ العِرْس وهو محرّمٌ

    يُعتَدُّ في الفقر المبرِّح مالا

    The gazelle burst radiantly in her face

    And the prey ran with it, so it was prey.

  40. فتق الغزالة غرّةً في وجهه

    وجرى الطرادُ به فكان غزالا

    It bent its neck onto the course of the bridle

    Bowing, while the two were heavy upon it and bent.

  41. وضفا على مَجرَى العنان بعنقه

    قِنْوانِ قد ثقُلا عليه فمالا

    And behind it the train of the bride protecting, when

    The tails surrendered some to the clutches.

  42. ووراءه ذيلُ العروس حمى إذا ال

    أذناب أسلم بعضُها الأكفالا

    It flowed, looking from the lamps of an ascetic-

    Their rims folded, so it was pitch dark.

  43. يدجو فينظر من سراجَيْ راهب

    فُتلت شفارهما فكنّ ذبالا

    Like a massive tree it proceeded, wavering,

    Until when the need intensified, it coiled and poured.

  44. كالطود أتلعَ هادياً ورديفَه

    حتى إذا اشتدّ انطوى فانهالا

    It marked the rocks-it does not stop appearing

    In every bright spot it struck a crescent.

  45. يسم الصخورَ فليس يبرح مُطلِعاً

    في كل واضحة أصاب هلالا

    Adorned in a right, though adorned while prevented,

    Bare, clarifying itself, posing.

  46. يُزهى بحقٍّ إن زهى متعطلاً

    عُريانَ يجلو نفسه واختالا

    You see it, how your gaze adorned it,

    Gathering the planets' pride, collecting Pleiades.

  47. فتراه كيف نظرتَه متحلّياً

    غُرَر الكواكب جامعاً رئبالا

    It stole from the Pleiades her cheek and chin-strap

    And put on the Hyades as a wrap, splendid.

  48. سلب الثريا خدّه وعذاره

    وتوشّح الشِّعرَى وشاحاً جالا

    As if the Jawza' backed its saddlecloth

    And its forearms lengthened when they stretched.

  49. وكأنما الجوزاء تَردُف سرجَه

    وتطول رُسغيه إذا ما طالا

    You mounted it and avoided another like it-

    Two fateful arrows paired at your place of attainment.

  50. أُركِبتَه وجَنبتَ آخر مثلَه

    سهمَيْ مصيب قارباك منالا

    It gave them from sincere intent in its chest,

    Not compelled gave, nor deceitfully.

  51. أعطاهما عن نيّة من صدره

    لا مكرَهاً أعطى ولا مغتالا

    And the white charger, the brown's sister in speed,

    And the son of the dark brown, sweet as honey.

  52. والأبيضَ الماضي وأختَ الدرع مح

    مولَين وابنَ الأسمر العسالا

    With this you hit when you rode it, and that

    A burden protecting you when battle was wanted.

  53. هذا تصيب إذا ركبت به وذا

    وَزَرٌ يقيك إذا أردت نزالا

    Good intimate ones! Where is their like found

    While they fall among ignorant tribes?

  54. نِعمٌ عوارفُ أين منك محلّها

    ويقعن عند معاشر جُهّالا

    Their curved necks leaned toward you,

    And now they stand upright, equitable.

  55. كانت تميل إليك عُوج رقابها

    فالآن قمن سويَّةً أعدالا

    Talking-that they are fiery mares

    Begetting doubles and more for themselves.

  56. متحدّثات أنهنّ لَقائحٌ

    ينتجن أضعافا لها أمثالا

    The courser flowed, and the valley suspected it

    A trickle, then it swelled and poured.

  57. جَرْيَ الأتيِّ توسّم الوادي به

    خيطاً فخيطاً ثم مدّ فسالا

    Until you folded it where its length

    Stretched the rope of hope and expanded hopes.

  58. حتى ثنيت بحيث طوَّلَ باعُه

    حبلَ الرجاء ووسَّع الآمالا

    The envious envied, but only bared his fangs at you,

    His heart churning.

  59. حسَد الحسودُ فما عدا أنيابَه

    نكتاً عليك وقلبَه بلبالا

    You deprived him of some of his business,

    So that leisure multiplied business.

  60. أسهرته ورقدت عن أشغاله

    بعضُ الفراغ يكثِّر الأشغالا

    Convey with your fortune the extent of your right! Divide

    Fortunes between people and lifespans.

  61. أبلغْ بحظّك قدرَ حقّك تقسم ال

    أرزاق بين الناس والآجالا

    And extend your right hand that I may kiss its back-

    So that perhaps it will transmit good fortune to me.

  62. وامدد يمينك لي أقبِّلْ ظهرَها

    فلعلّها تُعدينيَ الإقبالا

    I am he whose hearing pleased you and pleases you still

    With subtle, weighty words in speech.

  63. أنا من سمعتَ له وتسمع آنفاً

    غُرراً رِشاقاً في الكلامِ جِزالا

    By them your honors bloomed, widespread,

    The aroma of aromatic plants in morning's breath.

  64. عِبقت بها أعراضُكم منشورةً

    عَبَقَ الخزامَى باكرته شَمالا

    When they passed through ears they were keys

    And over hearts but yours were locks.

  65. ما اجتزن بالآذان كنَّ مفاتحا

    وعلى قلوب عداكُمُ أقفالا

    They compile your news in residence

    And travel, sending you examples.

  66. تقتصّ وهي مقيمةٌ أخبارَكم

    وتسير تُرسل فيكم الأمثالا

    They distract the forbearing, assert their own direction,

    And drag the ignorant's rope of frivolity.

  67. تُلهى الحليمَ فتستقلُّ وقارَه

    وتجرُّ حبلَ عُرامه البطَّالا

    I did not surpass people in correct understanding

    As I wished until I surpassed in bounties.

  68. ما فقتُ فيها الناسَ فضلَ إصابةٍ

    ما شئت حتى فقتُمُ أفضالا

    You poured me the reward of good will from it-

    Pure, white-and increased gifts.

  69. ساقيتني عنها الجزاءَ مودّةً

    بيضاءَ صافيةً وزدتَ نوالا

    So I swore I will never see one who speaks like me,

    Saying, Nor one who acts, what they said.

  70. فحلفتُ لا أبصرت مثلى قائلاً

    أبداً ومثلك فاعلاً ما قالا

  71. لا كالمخادع بِشرُهُ عن لؤمه

    إن سرّ قول منه ساء فعالا

  72. ضحك كنار ابن الحباحب خدعة

    لا جذوة تعطي ولا إشعالا

  73. أوفَى بنارٍ أعجبته وما درى

    جهلاً أيوقد مَندَلاً أم ضالا

  74. يُعطي على الغرض الخبيث وبخلُه

    عند الحقوق ويعذل البخَّالا

  75. داجانِيَ الكَلِمَ العِذابَ وكدَّني

    وعداً تحنظلَ طعمُه ومِطالا

  76. وأرادني أن يستدرّ شفاعةً

    رزقي وآخذَ ما لديه سؤالا

  77. هيهات أعدتني إذن أخلاقه

    سَفَهاً وكنتُ على الرجال عيالا

  78. ولقد نصحتُ له لوَ انّ مكلَّفاً

    بالعجب أرعَى سمعَه العذّالا

  79. قلت انتهز بصنيعة إمكانها

    إن الزمان يحوّل الأحوالا

  80. لو كان بقّى الشكر سرّ عطائه

    فمضى وبقّى السوءة الأقوالا

  81. جمح الغرورُ به فمرّ برأسه

    فكأنّه بالأمس ظلٌّ زالا

  82. بكَرتْ عليك وروَّحتْ بقصائدي

    سُحبُ الثناء مجدَّةً إسبالا

  83. تُجري التهانىء ماءها وهواءها

    عطرَ النسيم وبارداً سَلسالا

  84. ينبتن عِرضَكَ زهرةً موشِيّةً

    تبقَى وأرضَك روضةً مِحلالا

  85. يُمزَجن إذكاراً بمدحٍ شاكرٍ

    والماءُ يُصلِح مزجُه الجريالا

  86. زدني كما قد زدتُ يزددْ حسنُها

    إن المكارم تبعث الأَقوالا

  87. حتى تفوتَ الناسَ جَدًّا صاعداً

    وأفوتُهم بندَى يمينك حالا
