1. مِلْ معي لا عليك ضرّي ونفعي

    نسأل الجَزْعَ عن ظباءِ الجزعِ

    I am weary, care not for my harm or benefit

    We ask grief about the darkness of grief

  2. قلتَ لا تنطق الديار ولا يم

    لك بالي الطلولِ سمعاً فيُرعي

    You said, the abodes speak not, and days gone by

    For you, night is not long in hearing, so it tends

  3. وعليّ السؤالُ ليس عليّ ال

    عارُ إن ضنّت المغاني برجعِ

    It is for me to ask, no shame to ask

    If songs begrudge my return

  4. لم أكن أوّلَ الرجال التوى صَغْ

    وي لدار الأحباب أو مال ضلعي

    I was not the first man who longed, still young

    For the abode of loved ones or turned my cheek

  5. قد شجا قلبيَ البكاءُ بنزف ال

    أربع الحمرِ في الثلاثِ السُّفعِ

    My heart is torn by weeping, bleeding

    On all fours from the strikes of destiny

  6. هل مجابٌ يدعو مبدِّد أوطا

    ري بجمَع يردُّ أيامَ جَمعِ

    Is there one who responds, gathering my scattered tent

    Or trusted friend to carry my heavy concerns without complaint

  7. أو أمينُ القوى أحمّله هم

    ماً ثقيلاً بحطِّهِ دون سَلعِ

    And remembering him, his preserved name flows

    From his people's pact, and tending pasture

  8. وعلى ذكره جرى باسمه المح

    فوظُ من عهد أهله والمرعي

    So relieve me with a breeze from his youth

    Long has the hot wind blown, lifting me

  9. فافرُجا لي عن نفحةٍ من صَباه

    طال مدّى لها الصليفَ ورفعي

    That breeze blows on a land, its expanse in the wind

    Scattered by the hand of a gentle traveller

  10. إن ذاك النسيمَ يجري على أر

    ضٍ ثراها في الريح رقيةُ لَسعي

    Tents folded over every full moon

    The most beautiful between five and nine

  11. وخيام تُثنَى على كلّ بدرٍ

    ملكَ الحسنَ بين خمسٍ وتسعِ

    In your narrowness and permitted ravaging of my love

    O my friends, you robbed me and caused me anguish

  12. وبما ضاق منكما واستباح ال

    حبّ سلبي يا صاحبيّ وفجعي

    Sing to me of Saad's mother, and my heart

    Is with her, for today my heart will hear

  13. غنياني بأمّ سعدٍ وقلبي

    معَها إن قلبيَ اليومَ سمعي

    Turn from me the blame, for it is not

    You who transfer to me the nature of my making

  14. واصرفا عنّيَ الملامة فيها

    لستما تنقُلان باللوم طبعي

  15. سألتْ بي أنَّى أقام وهل نا

    م بعينيه بعد هجري وقطعي

    لي أرى يابساً ترابَ الربعِ

  17. خار قلبي فغاضَ في الدار جفني

    فاستحلَّت دمي بتفريط دمعي

    How much of Najd, if only Najd's people kept faith

    Would have restored my heart from a mountain pass or crack

  18. كم بنجدٍ لو وفَى أهلُ نجدٍ

    لفؤادي من شَعبةٍ أو صدعِ

    And sigh I taught the dove of the sands

    What it knew not of yearning and lament

  19. وزفيرٍ علَّمتُ منه حمامَ ال

    دوح ما كان من حنينٍ وسجع

    Nights in which I took pleasure in imaginings

    And touches of light, from those meager meals

  20. وليالٍ قنعتُ منها بأضغا

    ثِ الأماني ومخلبات اللمعِ

    How destiny mocked in the cheating of my fortune

    Neglecting my intimacy, dividing my assembly

  21. ما أخفَّ الأقدارَ في غبنِ حظّي

    وتعفِّي أنسي وتفريق جمعي

    Every day brings adversities, clutching

    My banners either frontally or from the side

  22. كلّ يوم صَرفٌ يخابط أورا

    قي من الدهر أو يخالس فرعي

    I bear tyranny gracefully until

    The rend expands, beyond the sewing of patches

  23. أرفع الضيم بالتجمل حتى

    مرَدَ الخرقُ عن خياطِ الرقعِ

    The people shunned the way of generosity until

    They submit not to magnanimity nor its canon

  24. رفض الناسُ مذهب الجود حتّى

    ما يدينون للسماح بشرعِ

    So they are equal, though Ahmad tread

    The path of verse or insult and abuse

  25. فسواء عليهمُ أبحمدٍ

    طرَقَ الشِّعرُ أم بسبٍّ وقذعِ

    Bestowing became token, though much

    Was gained, until I mastered the taste of prevention

  26. وأمرَّ العطاءَ نزرٌ كثيرُ ال

    منِّ حتى استحليت طعم المنعِ

    I ask the misers, and Allah is more worthy

    Of the benevolent feat and goodly making

  27. أسأل الباخلين واللّه أولى

    بكريم الجدا وحُسن الصنعِ

    And in the manner of heights, after a people

    Whose abundance in them stretched widely my arm

  28. وعلى خطّة العلا بعد قومٍ

    طال باعي فيهم وأرحبَ ذرعي

    They defend me, though no shield defends me

    Like my sword, and no armor shields me

  29. هم حَموني وما حمى حدّ سيفي

    ووقَوني ما لا تقينيَ درعي

    They stood in awe, shaking the world away from me

    Though to prey it pounces like a crouching lion

  30. وأهابوا فزعزعوا الدهرَ عنّي

    وهو ليثٌ على الفريسة مقعي

    I swear by the carved out gifts, the guidance

    Of one gone astray, or closeness of a spring

  31. قسماً بالمنقَّباتِ الهدايا

    شُقَقِ الضالِ أو قسيِّ النبعِ

    Every smooth plain the travel folded

    Returns pricked as the hedgehog pricked

  32. كلّ جرداءَ لفّها السيرُ بالسي

    ر فعادت في النِّسع مثلَ النسعِ

    It knelt under his saddle, yesterday lofty like a trunk

    It shook off in Babylon and Mina thirty nights in seven

  33. خضعت تحت رحلها بعسيبٍ

    كان بالأمس مشرفاً كالجِذعِ

    Nights and days go on, no difference

    Between rising and setting, gathering and dispersing

  34. نفضت بين بابلٍ ومنىً قا

    ب ثلاثين ليلة في سبعِ

    As spots on Abu Qubays appear to me

    Like doves upon the hilltops and treetops

  35. تدرج الليل بالنهار فما تأ

    نس فرقاً ما بين رفع ووضعِ

    They carried the burdens of sins and fulfilled them

    In decades, after decades, in the seven and the seventh

  36. طُلَّعاً من أبي قُبيس يُخيَّل

    نَ حَماماً على الهضابِ الفُرعِ

    My friend from Bani Muzarra delivered me and blessed my planting and watered my crop

    Prepared in the morning and prepared

  37. تحملُ السُّهَّمَ الملاويحَ أشبا

    حاً توافَوا من كلّ فَجٍّ وصُقعِ

    In defense, wearing out the time of resistance

    Whenever their sheaths shake

  38. زمّلوا أوسُقَ الذنوب وقضَّو

    ها حِصاباً في السبع بعد السبعِ

    They draw them out, intent, at every rising

    They carried suns above them and guided them

  39. لَحَلا من بني المزرّع مجنا

    يَ وزكَّى غرسي وريَّع زرعي

    So they came from darkness into pieces

    The bite of hornets washes their disgrace

  40. المَلبّون غدوةً والملبّو

    ن دفاعاً ولات ساعةَ دفعِ

    If they care about disgrace and bite

    And if the sweat of a lost camel flows among them

  41. كلمّا هُزَّت الحفائظُ منهم

    أطلعوها ملمومةً كلَّ طِلعِ

    The origin ignites its fire into the branches

    They wore cloaks humbly and so rent

  42. حملوا فوقها الشموسَ وقادو

    ها فجاءت من الدجى في قِطعِ

    With stars of heights, the darkness of cloaks

    With noses atop kerchiefs that perceive scents

  43. يغسل العارَ عنهمُ لذعُ خُرصا

    نِ قناها إن همّ عارٌ بلذعِ

    And necks under turbans that twist

    Every seeker takes after his father in manner

  44. وإذا فار فيهمُ عرقُ طيٍّ

    أضرم الأصلُ نارَه في الفرعِ

    And aspires to heights, striving

    They tread the path of perfection interwoven

  45. لبسوا النقع حاسرين فشقّوا

    بنجوم العلا ظلامَ النقعِ

    Like threading beads along holes in a necklace

    Watering settlements, though the year desiccated

  46. بأنوفٍ فوق الملاثم شمٍّ

    ورقابٍ تحت المغافر تُلعِ

    And their arms stretched among them like hyenas

    With pure camels, milky when milked

  47. كلُّ تالٍ أباه يجري كما يج

    ري ويسعَى إلى العلاء ويُسعي

    Into the bucket bleating at the teat

    And when virgins became too burdened for them

  48. سلكوا في الكمال فانتظموه

    مُولَج الخيط في ثقوبِ الجَزعِ

    They fed not their bars with fodder

    So I departed them, carried on adversity

  49. يُرطبون القرى وقد أعجفَ العا

    مُ ومُدَّت فيهم ذراعُ الضَّبْعِ

    My stout heart that long calling does not emaciate

    I came to you desirous, distracted from all people

  50. بِعلابٍ مفهَّقاتٍ إذا ما

    ردَّ شُخبيهِ حالبٌ في الضَّرعِ

    So my shepherd and satiation were you

    The rope of the well-mannered has connected me

  51. وإذا عزّت البِكارُ عليهم

    لم يُغِذُّوا أعيارَها بالكسعِ

    Like fortunate stars never severed

    Her charms called me to his love turning me

  52. فزت منهم على الظما بقليبٍ

    لم يكدّر جمّاتهِ طولُ نزعي

    From others and preventing my return

    With the unique and wondrous among them, unmatched by you

  53. جئته ساغباً مُحلّاً عن النا

    س جميعاً فكان رِيِّي وشِبعي

    In an excellence not originated

    The people envied and abandoned me

  54. وصلتْ بي حبلَ المهذَّبِ أنوا

    ءُ سعودٍ ما كنَّ أنجمَ قَطعِ

    Preferring to hear my speech in silence and amputation

    But for you are hits of enemies bleeding

  55. ودعتني إلى هواه سجايا

    هنّ صَرفي عن سواه وردعي

    Before pulled out by hands of fate

    Every female gazelle in mentioning you

  56. بالبديع الغريب فيهم وما جا

    ءك من فضله فليس ببدعِ

    In the land, by the tongues of transmitters

    Walking on the lowlands without losing pace

  57. سوَّد الناسُ ودَّهم وجلا لي

    عن وجوهٍ بيضٍ من الودّ نُصعِ

    Or being held back at pools an hour of water-drawing

    Traversing land by mares, and sea by ships

  58. ردّ صوتي ملبّياً ورعاني

    بيدٍ كالغمام تُروي وتُرعي

    Whose planks the traits of your glory composed in hearing

    Like the Virgin's threading of her necklace of farewell

  59. لا بملغٍ غريبها ملء أيّا

    مِيَ فيه ولا بوَأْدٍ مقعي

    From your loftiness I adopted jewelry for my molding

    Seeking aid and choosing a unique pearl for my stringing

  60. يا غياثي المبلوغَ قبل اجتهادي

    وربيعي قبل ارتيادي ونَجعي

    So listen to what none before or after you

    With such speech has encountered, of hearing

  61. وظِلالي من الأذى بين قومٍ

    هجَّروا بي في القرقريّ النقعِ

    The Nile brought you an untouched virgin

    Who wed none but you, ever, in deflowering

  62. كم كمين من راحتيك كريم

    لم أُثِرهُ برُقيتي وبخَدعي

    Though beside your worth, still I multiplied

    So excuse my falling short and accept my capacity

  63. جاء عفواً وعاد وَتراً وقد كا

    ن كفاني منه وفورُ الشَّفعِ

  64. لم تُصِخْ للعذول في فرط أشعا

    ري ولم تزدجر بنهيٍ ووزعِ

  65. شيمة ما نقلتُها عن أناسٍ

    حملوا هضبةَ العلا غير ظُلْعِ

  66. كلّ ليثٍ مشى الرُّوَيدَ وخفَّف

    تَ إلى سبقه خُفوفَ السِّمعِ

  67. بك طالت يدي وخفَّ على كل

    لِ فؤادٍ يستثقل الفضل وقعي

  68. وتنزَّهتُ عن معاشرَ لا يف

    تحُ أبوابَ جودهم طولُ قرعي

  69. صدتُ بالمضرحيّ أزرقَ فاستح

    ييت صيدي بالناعقات البُقعِ

  70. لامني الحاسدون فيك فآبوا

    بين زَبنٍ شاهَ الوجوهَ وقَمعِ

  71. ما لهم معرضين عنّي ومصغي

    ن لقولي إلا اصطلامي وجدعي

  72. ولك الصائبات حَبَّ الأعادي

    بسهام يدمين قبل النزعِ

  73. كلّ ركّاضةٍ بذكرك في الأر

    ض على ألسن الرواة الدُّلْعِ

  74. ماشيات على الظرابِ ولم تحْ

    فَ ولا قيّدت قِبالاً بشسعِ

  75. لا يزاحمن ذا كُراعٍ ولا يُض

    رَبْنَ حول الحياض ساعةَ كرعِ

  76. تقطع البرَّ بالمهارى الجديلي

    يات والبحرَ بالسفين القُلْعِ

  77. نظَمتْها سماتُ مجدك في الأس

    ماع نظمَ العذراء خيطَ الودْعِ

  78. من علاك انتخبتُ حِليةَ صوغي

    مستعيناً واخترت دُرَّة رصعي

  79. فاستمعها لم يلقَ قبلي ولا قب

    لك ذو منطقٍ بها ذا سَمعِ

  80. ساق منها النيروزُ عذراءَ لم تس

    مح لصهرٍ سواك قطّ ببُضْعِ

  81. كثرت وهي دون قدرك فاعذر

    في قصوري واقنع بما قال وُسعي
