لعلَّهم لو وقفوا

أبلَّ هذا المدنَفُ

Perhaps if they had stopped,

this slanderer would have desisted,

قالوا غداً وعدُ النوى

يا بردَها لو لم يفُوا

and said tomorrow, and intention's promise

O how cold it would be if they had not been treacherous!

فاستنفروا وأجمعوا

واستنظروا وأخلفوا

So they were provoked and gathered,

and waited and were remiss.

تسرّع الناجي الحشا

وجعجعَ المكلَّفُ

The survivor made haste

and the appointed clamoured,

ثم استوى على النوى ال

سابقُ والمخلَّفُ

Then they kissed and wiped over,

and rolled in the dust and circumambulated.

هل أنت يا قلبُ معي

أو معَهم منصرِفُ

Verily the perfection of kingdom is from

the injustice of nights being equitable,

قل لهُمُ عن جسدي

إن سألوا وأسعفوا

And that he and his people

are the most benevolent of eyes that glance

قفوا على فارطكم

يا أيّهذا السلفُ

And he is, in their pride,

a pride for them and an honour,

ما كل سير اليعملا

تِ الغشْمُ والتعجرفُ

Every gloomy cloud is illuminated

by his face and dispersed.

تحرّجوا فما دمي

أنف البعير يرعُفُ

And every governor to the ruler

is preoccupied with his name and leaves.

يا سائق الأظعان أر

وِدْ بعضَ ما تعتسفُ

He flew and the bird circles

fluttering around him,

فإنّ بين سُوقها

أفئدةً تُختَطفُ

And it was done - the brilliant one -

its lights were eclipsed by his lights.

أنتَ على خدورها

فارفق بها مستخلَفُ

And the judicious king managed

his view that examines.

وهي على الدرّ الذي

أُكِنَّ فيه الصدفُ

So he included in it his justice -

that which sincerity had disseminated.

وفي الركاب بَكرةٌ

تطولها وتَشرفُ

He led the difficulties gently,

straightening for them and being kind,

تضعُف عن راكبها

فهل تراها تُردَفُ

Until he was balanced on the path

and it inclined, devout.

على النقا المبلول من

ها غُصُنٌ مهفهفُ

And he knew the world and what

had aided the one who knew.

مال وقام فاستقا

م لامُهُ والألفُ

So his inclination established it -

his education that enlightens.

أورق لو أزفَّ لي

ذاك القضيب المخطَفُ

A soul with truth it fortifies

and to it, it turns.

آه على ريحانه

لو كان مما يُقطفُ

The world coquets with it

and it turns away from the world.

سلالةٌ من الهلا

ل جسمُه المنحَّفُ

It vows, not to trick it,

its ornate possessions,

يا زمني على الغضا

ما أنتَ إلا الأسفُ

And a power that holds it back

from its glory - chastity.

لهفي عليك ماضياً

لو ردّك التأسُّفُ

And tranquility calmly filling

while it bleeds out.

قد كنتُ في ظلّك لا

أخاف ما أُخوَّفُ

The Tigris and Euphrates or

shawls for it and kerchiefs.

وأنت والشبابُ لي

خميلةٌ ومُطرَفُ

It would be pure white if it flowed with it -

it would not say "I am wasteful."

ولِدَتي على المها

بينكما تَصرَّفُ

And a nature like water - no,

like a flash of lightning that is sipped.

فبنتما وصوّحتْ

روضةُ عيشي الأنُفُ

It intoxicates soberly -

if grape juice intoxicates you.

فاليوم كلّ ناظرٍ

يُرمَدُ لي أو يُطرَفُ

Exalted above description - none

can do it justice, who describes it.

تلفَّتتْ ذاتُ اللمى

عن المنى تنحرفُ

And its sign dazzled -

so the sinner admitted.

فصدَفتْ أمس لها

واليوم عنها تصدِفُ

The crown consulted it - and afterwards -

deafness in its ears.

رأتْ بها ما كرهتْ

فأنكرتْ ما تعرفُ

And the lifespan of past kings

its new life exceeded.

وهي التي من يدها

سيفُ عِذاري يُرهفُ

Verily the one who held the sword

below it was not timid.

لو أنصفت أسودَه

ما راعها المنصَّفُ

You strengthened so you supported it

and you alone weakened the weakened.

حلفتُ بالمقَصِّري

ن ركبوا فأوجفوا

You protected it from vileness

while its chest was targeted.

لانوا على العيش وخا

فوا فَوتها فعنفُوا

Ministers under you

below men stand.

بانوا فطاروا في الرحا

ل شُعُثاً حين حَفوا

You are to it what brings the house close

or casts it away.

رجَوا لأثقال الذنو

ب ساعةً تخفِّفُ

Your love ennobles it -

it is excused or it is rebuked.

فاستنفدوا جهدَهُمُ

سارين حتى وقفوا

So why do people seek

to connect with it while it splits away?

فلثموا ومسحوا

وجمّروا وطوّفوا

They tasted so you were lightning

that deceives when it snatches away.

إن كمال الملك من

جَور الليالي منصفُ

And the confusion of their palms

pulls it while the hard ground does.

وإنه وقومَهُ

أكرمُ عينٍ تَطرِفُ

They returned it so they censured it

for what they have and deprived it.

وهو على فخرهمُ

فخرٌ لهم وشرَفُ

And it is one they had tried

its defiance and knew it.

أبلجُ كلُّ غُمّةٍ

بوجهه تنكشفُ

It did not become heavy but rather

you weakened, and they weakened.

وكلّ والٍ للخطو

ب باسمه منصرفُ

You taught people a lesson by

running while they stood still.

حلَّق والنسرُ المُطا

ر حوله يرفرفُ

And that is what the encumbered

human cannot achieve.

وتمَّ فالبيضاءُ عن

أنواره تنكسفُ

And how can the arrogant

deny while they are honored?

ودبّر الملكَ السحي

لَ رأيُه المستحصِفُ

And your glory a mediator -

and all glory is fleeting.

فضمّ منه عدلهُ

ما نشرَ التحيُّفُ

With you, my lineage flowed and many

feathers of mine gathered.

قاد الصعابَ الحُمسَ يش

تدّ لها ويلطُفُ

And my name soared flowing

with the winds that blow violently.

حتى استوى على الطري

ق وهي مِيلٌ حُنُفُ

My back is fortified by you

and my side is sheltered.

وعرَفَ الدنيا وما

أعانه معرِّفُ

I befriended you, and the house -

spacious, fertile - unites.

فقد أقام مَيلها

تدبيرُه المثقِّفُ

So my praise of you

focuses beyond other people.

نفسٌ مع الحق تعز

زُ وله تنعطفُ

It has blended my passions

with serenity that aspires.

تَبرَّجُ الدنيا لها

وَهِيَ عنها تعزِفُ

For your love has quenched

the blazing, the streaming.

تُقسِم لا خادعَها

مَتاعُها المزخرَفُ

You possessed my soul, so I have

no escape from you.

وقدرة يحبسها

عن شأوها التعفُّفُ

And your friendship in it is a place

like my core or finer.

وراحةٌ ركيّة

تُملأ وهي تُنزفُ

So neither faith, my essence in you,

nor hopes can heal.

دجلةُ والفرات أو

شالٌ لها ونُطَفُ

I will not despair, even if you shun,

that you will show kindness.

بيضاءُ لو جاد بها

ما قال إني مسرفُ

And the patience of Jacob is with me

until Joseph returns.

وخُلُقٌ كالماء لا

بل كاللمى يُرتشَفُ

There remains upon you what

Umm Hudayl called out.

تسكرُ منه صاحياً

إن أسكرتك القرقفُ

And what a Yaum al-Mizdalifa walked,

billowing its train and slapping it.

جلَّ عن الوصف فما

يُنصفه من يصِفُ

Upon it, from the coolness of spring,

its layered wrap.

وبهرتْ آيتُه

فاعترف المقترفُ

In a rising of blessing

whose descent does not cease.

شاوره التاج وفي

أُذْنيه بعدُ الشَّنَفُ

For people are appendages

and you are the axis and the equitable.

وفات أسلافَ الكهو

ل عمرُه المؤتنفُ

You were created uniquely in us -

a second to none recognized.

إن الذي استلّك سي

فاً دونه لمرهِفُ

I say without false modesty

for that statement, and I vow,

قَويتَ فنصرتَه

وحدُّك المضعَّفُ

And guarantees, perhaps

for you a promised time is not missed.

أجننته من الردى

وصدرهُ مستهدفُ

Keepsakes from describing you

with goods that are recognized.

وزارةٌ عليكُمُ

دون الرجال تقفُ

For you they are swords -

and they are gifts with you.

أنتم لها ما تقربُ ال

دار بكم أو تقذِفُ

يشعفها هواكُمُ

تُعذَرُ أو تُعنَّفُ

فما لقومٍ يبتغو

ن وصلها وتصدِفُ

شاموا فكنت برقةً

تخدعُ حين تخطفُ

والتيهُ من أكفّهم

يجذبها والصلَفُ

عادوا بها فعيّفوا

بما لهم وأجحفوا

وهي التي قد جرّبوا

نشوزَها وعرَفوا

ما ثقُلت وإنما

قويتُمُ وضعُفوا

عبرتم الناس بأن

جريتُمُ ووقفوا

وذاك ما لا يستطي

عُ البَشَرُ المكلَّفُ

وكيف لمباهلٍ

أن نُكِروا ويشرُفوا

ومجدكم واسطةٌ

وكلُّ مجدٍ طرَفُ

بكم سرى عِرقي وكث

ثَ ريشيَ الملتحَفُ

وطار ذكري جارياً

مع الرياح تعصفُ

ظهري بكم محصَّنٌ

وجانبي مكنَّفُ

ألِفْتُكم والمنزل ال

رَحب الخصيبُ يؤلفُ

فمِدَحي عليكُمُ

دون الأنام تعكُفُ

من مُزجت أهواؤه

بسلوة تكلَّفُ

فقد سقا حبَّكم ال

مدَهِّق المصرِّفُ

ملكتمُ نفسي فما

لي عنكُمُ منصرَفُ

وودّكم منها مكا

ن كبدي أو ألطفُ

فلا برا وجدي بكم

ولا أفاق الشعَفُ

لست وإن أعرضتُمُ

أيأسُ أن تَعَطَّفُوا

وصبر يعقُوبَ معي

حتى يُردَّ يوسفُ

يبقى عليك ما دَعت

أمُّ هديل تَهتفُ

وما أهلَّ وسعى

مزدلِفٌ معرِّفُ

وما مشى النيروز ير

خي ذيله ويُسدفُ

عليه من بُرد الربي

ع بُردُه المفوَّفُ

في طالِع من نعمةٍ

أفولُه لا يزِفُ

فالناس أذيالٌ وأن

ت قطبُها والمَنصَفُ

خُلقتَ فينا واحداً

ثانيه من لا يُعرَفُ

أقول لا محتشماً

لقولها وأحلِفُ

وضامنات لعلا

كم موعداً لا يُخلَفُ

سوائر من وصفكم

بضوعةٍ تَعَرَّفُ

فهي لكم صوارمٌ

وهي لديكم تُحَفُ
