1. رقّ لبغداد القضاءُ والقدَرْ

    وعطف الدهرُ عليها وأمرْ

    Fate and destiny have been kind to Baghdad

    And time has shown it mercy and grace

  2. وامتعض المجد لها من طول ما

    حاق بها الضيم فثار فانتصرْ

    Glory was upset by its long oppression

    So it revolted and gained victory

  3. وضحك المزن إلى ربوعها

    والعامُ قد قطَّب فيها وكشَرْ

    The clouds smiled upon its meadows

    As the year rained heavily on it

  4. فهي ومن يحمله ترابُها

    عازبةٌ راحت ومُنهاضٌ جَبرْ

    It and those whose dust fills it

    Are free again and broken strength restored

  5. عاد الحيا إلى الثرى فَرَبَّه

    وفَتَقَ الصبحُ الظلامَ ففُجِرْ

    Life has returned to the land so it prospered

    And dawn has torn the darkness apart

  6. ونطقَتْ خُرسُ العلا فأبصرتْ

    عمياؤها وسمعت وهي وَقَرْ

    The voiceless intellect has spoken

    Its blind have seen, its deaf have heard

  7. فليهنها ما أثمر الصبرُ لها

    والصبرُ في إمراره حلو الثمرْ

    So enjoy what patience has yielded it

    Patience whose fruit is sweet when ripe

  8. قصرَكِ يا خابطةَ الليلِ بنا

    لابدّ لليل الطويل من سَحرْ

    Your palace, o piercer of the night with spears

    The long night must end at dawn

  9. تنفَّسي مبصرةً وانفرجي

    فطالما غَمَّ دجاكِ واعتكرْ

    Breathe free and open up

    For long has your darkness vexed you

  10. هذا الوزير وأخوه فاسفري

    قد رُدّت الشمسُ عليك والقمرْ

    The sun and moon have risen upon you again

    Two stars that when they vanished in glorious endeavor

  11. نجمان ما غابا لسعيٍ ماجدٍ

    في الأفق إلّا طلعا مع الظفَرْ

    Rose again in the horizon with triumph

    Each racing himself to farthest reach

  12. وجاريان سابقٌ بنفسه

    إلى المدى ولاحقٌ على الأثرْ

    One following the other's tracks

    Alike, the palm like its sister palm

  13. تشابها والكفُّ مثلُ أختها

    والزَّندُ مثل الزند مَرْخاً وعُشَرْ

    The cubit equal to the cubit well-measured

    Whenever a hand reaches high by faith

  14. متى تَطُلْ من شرف الدين يدٌ

    تجد كمالَ المُلك عن أخرى حَسَرْ

    It finds the kingdom's perfection beyond grasp

    Both hands are measures of the highest goals

  15. كلتا اليمينين قياسٌ للعلا

    ذا ذَرَعَ الأفقَ بها وذا شَبَرْ

    One spanned the horizon, the other a cubit

    Who sees him as a bouquet, and him as incense

  16. من ير ذا وِرْداً وذاكَ قَربَاً

    له يقل ذا العشبُ من ذاك المطَرْ

    To him the grass is like that rain

    A lofty palm whose branches the foe

  17. دوحةُ مجدٍ صعُبتْ عيدانُها

    على العدا أن تُخْتَلَى وتُهتَصَرْ

    Cannot shake or strip off

    Abdul Raheem watered its trunk

  18. سقى الندى عبدُ الرحيم ساقَها

    وحاط أيّوبُ عليها وحَظَرْ

    And Ayyub fortified and protected it

    It carried heavily and so yielded

  19. وحَمَلتْ مثقَلَةً فأثمرتْ

    مُذكِرَةً فولدتْ كلَّ ذكَرْ

    Fruit, begetting every male child

    A people who aided time when it stumbled

  20. قوم أقاموا الدهر وهو عاثرٌ

    حتى مشى يختالُ عنهم وخَطَرْ

    Until it walked tall, heedless of them

    And they grasped their days fiercely

  21. وأدركوا أيّامَهم بهيمةً

    مُغْفَلَةً شِياتُها حُصَّ الشَّعَرْ

    Though previously inattentive, distracted

    So they held onto its forelocks and mane

  22. فاعتلقوا جباهَها وسُوقَها

    وطلعوا فيها الحجولَ والغُرَرْ

    And extracted its first fruits and gems

    Every brave lad they reared

  23. كلّ غلام إن عفا وإن سطا

    أمَّنَ بين الخافقين وذَعَرْ

    Trusted between the two abysses of his heart

    Supreme, whom prohibition cannot stop

  24. أروعُ لا تجري الخطوبُ إن نهى

    خوفاً ولا يقضي القضاءُ إن أمرْ

    Nor judgment move if it commands

    He reached the heavens, wrapped in his cloak

  25. نال السماءَ مُدرَجاً في قُمْطِه

    وفات كلَّ قارح وما اثّغَرْ

    While every stubborn foe despaired

    He wrongfully took no blackened share

  26. لم يأخذ السودَدَ حظّاً غلطاً

    ولا العلا مغتصباً أو مقتسرْ

    Nor unjustly seized the heights

    He protected every legion he joined

  27. ما سار في كتيبةٍ إلا حَمَى

    وما امتطى وسادةً إلا وزَرْ

    And held account on every cushion he mounted

    God has, through you, created a miracle on earth

  28. قد صدعَ اللّهُ بكم مُعجزةً

    في الأرض ليست في محالات البشرْ

    That exists not among mortal works

    So He guided, through you, those who see

  29. فأرشدَ المستبصرين بكُمُ

    لو كان يُغنِي القلبُ أو يُغنِي البصرْ

    If the heart or sight were of any use

    And informed the guided kingdom

  30. وأعلم المُلكَ المدارَ أنه

    بغير قطبٍ منكُمُ لا يستقِرّْ

    That without your pivotal role it cannot endure

    For you are the rope binding its edges

  31. وأنه حبلٌ ولِيتُم فتلَه

    فكيفما أبرمه الناسُ انتسرْ

    However the people may twist it, it will tear

    Is it not enough that a preacher warns

  32. أما كفاه إنْ كفاهُ واعظٌ

    بيانُ ما جرَّبَ منكم واختبرْ

    By the trials you have faced and tests you bore

    And how, in your hands, did its clay

  33. وكيف لُمَّتْ وهي في أيديكُمُ

    طينتُه وانحلَّ في أيدٍ أُخَرْ

    Knead, while in other hands it dissolved?

    How many regretted, after a time of pride

  34. كم غارَ من بعد الغرورِ مدَّةً

    بغيركم أما يَغارُ من يُغَرّْ

    Ruling without you, but does he regret who prides?

    Yes, the distinction between men has appeared to him

  35. بلى على ذاك لقد بان له

    فُرقانُ ما بين الرجال فظهرْ

    And his soul counseled itself

    So he consulted wisdom and reasoned well

  36. ونَصَحَتْه نفسُه لنفسِهِ

    فشاورَ الحزمَ وأحسنَ النظرْ

    You met his madness with your forbearance

    The like of you, if wronged, is quick to forgive

  37. فقابلوا هفوتَه بحلمكم

    فمثلُكم إن كان ذنبٌ مَن غَفَرْ

    And you rectified with your efforts

    A task whose frustration burdened and dragged many

  38. واستدركوا بسعيكم حفيظةً

    من أمره ما شعَبَ العجزُ وجَرّْ

    It was he who walked the right path guided by your oaths

    And if you are rich without need

  39. فهو الذي دَرَّ على أيمانِكم

    قِدماً له خِلفُ الصلاح وغَزُرْ

    It is him who needs you

    Iraq today orbits around you

  40. وإن غنيتم لغنى أنفسكم

    عن رغبةٍ فهو إليكم مفتقِرْ

    Without your guidance it cannot revolve

    Its lamps are lit through you

  41. إن العراقَ اليوم أنتم قطبُه

    لولاكُمُ مدَبِّرين لم يَدُرْ

    Both absent and present

    You are its victorious swords if wronged

  42. قد حُبِستْ عليكُمُ سُروجُه

    من غاب من حُماتِكم ومن حضَرْ

    Its spring if distressed

    If you come near, its plains laugh

  43. أنتم إذا ضِيمَ سيوفُ نصره

    وأنتُمُ ربيعه إذا اقشَعَرّْ

    Justice shines white in it

    And if you depart, it awaits you still

  44. إذا قربتم ضحِكتْ عِراصُه

    وابيضَّ وجهُ العدل فيها وسفَرْ

    As if you are the awaited imam

    So remedy its ailments with your cure

  45. وإن نأيتم كان في انتظارِكم

    كأنكم فيه الإمامُ المنتظَرْ

    The wound that was deepest has been lanced

    Only a breath remains, so grasp it

  46. فعالجوا أداوءَه بطبِّكم

    قد حُفِر الجرحُ الذي كان عقَرْ

    Before the chance for rescue has passed

    O vanquisher of drought, gain victory, the year

  47. لم يبقَ إلا رمقٌ فابتدروا

    إمساكه والغوثَ إن لم يُبتَدَرْ

    Of afflictions has rebelled against us here

    How many glories about you are told

  48. يا قاتلَ الجدب انتصرْ وقد بغى

    بعدك عامُ المحل فينا وفَجَرْ

    Some unambiguous, some hints obscure

    With your right hand revive a faded glory

  49. كم تُمطَر الشهباء عنك بالحيا

    قد صرَّحتْ كَحْلٌ وقد صابَتْ بقُرّْ

    Renew the habit of bounty long gone

    Approach in joy, embrace the breast

  50. امدد بيمناك على مجدٍ عفا

    خِصباً وجدِّدْ رسمَ جُودٍ قد دَثَرْ

    You have emptied, with a bouquet make amends

    Give the state abundant shade

  51. واقدم على السعد إلى الصدر الذي

    أوحشتَه فانهض بِورْدٍ وصدَرْ

    Spread by your clouds, well anchored

    Let your enemies' hearts boil with fury

  52. واضفُ على الدولة ظلاًّ سابغاً

    تسحبه سَحْبَك هُدَّابَ الأُزُرْ

    While your friends enjoy open delight

    Their claws have eaten it

  53. دعْ كَبَدَ الغيظِ على أعدائها

    ودع لأوليائها حَزَّ الأُشَرْ

    When you ruled, all aligned and settled

    Things bent to your gesture,

  54. قد أكلتْ أكفَّها نواجذٌ

    يومَ لك الأمرُ استقامَ واستقَرّْ

    Hearts submitting to your evil command

    They conspired out of a twisted nature

  55. ودَوِيَتْ بما أَشرتَ وطَوَتْ

    أفئدةً بالسوء فيك تأتمِرْ

    To a wicked peace and hidden wrath

    Never, while you live, cease or perish

  56. فتَّهُمُ فربَعُوا من ظَلَعٍ

    على رضاً بادٍ وسخطٍ مستسِرّْ

    Will their villainy, until they plug their holes

    Your rule will know no weakness

  57. فلا يزل وأنت حيٌّ خالدٌ

    نأيُهُمُ حتى يسدُّون الحُفَرْ

    Except that of days and circumstances changing

    Remember me, and describe how you see

  58. ولا تنلْ مُلكَكَ إلا شللاً

    يدُ الزمان وتصاريفُ الغِيَرْ

    Signs of your glory, for the generous remember

    Speak of my signs, speak of my miracles

  59. اُذكُرْ وصِفْ كيف ترى بشائري

    في مجدكم إنّ الكريم مَنْ ذَكَرْ

    And my knowledge of all hidden secrets

    This, with which I paid you visitation

  60. حدِّثْ بآياتي وقلْ بمعجزي

    وخَبَرِي عن كلِّ غيبٍ مستترْ

    And my auspicious bird, when harried

    Why should you not believe in my warnings

  61. هذا الذي جَرَتْ به عِيافتي

    لكم وطيري ذو اليمين إذ زُجِرْ

    When I, in praising you, am warner supreme

    You have extended my life out of your merit

  62. وكيف لا تصدُقُ فيكم نُذُري

    وأنا في مديحكم أبو النُّذُرْ

    Your luck is my share, of good and ill

    Time has tortured my flesh since you departed

  63. ومدَدُ العيشةِ لي من فضلكم

    وحظُّكم حظِّيَ من خَيْرٍ وشرّْ

    In your absence burning bone and grating it

    Leaving me no wound, except from

  64. قد عَرَقَ الزمانُ لحمي بعدكم

    ببعدكم وأحرق العظمَ وذَرّْ

    A claw and fang and rending talon

    Eyes spurn me in their love of you

  65. ولم يدع لي غمزُهُ جارحةً

    إلّا وفيها غمزُ نابٍ وظُفُرْ

    And tongues as barbed as arrow heads

    I hope for their nearness though misguided

  66. تنبِذني في حبّكم نواظرٌ

    وألسنٌ مَنبَذَةَ النِّضوِ المُعَرّْ

    And their kindness, like Kahlan hoped for Mudar's love

    Better to return from visiting them

  67. أرجو نداهم ضلَّةً وعطفَهم

    كما رجت قحطانُ ودّاً في مُضرْ

    To a difficult but flourishing abode

    So inquire, in your absence, about my welfare

  68. أرجِعُ عن زيارتي في يُسرهم

    إلى محلٍّ عامرٍ من العُسُرْ

    And me, when you pass or time shifts

    Your tongue, and all who speak through you

  69. فافتقِدوا شِلواً لكم بقاؤه

    ومنكُمُ إن فاتَ أو مرَّ يَمُرّْ

    Whether sensible minds or poetic wits

    My expressive capacity has reached its limit

  70. لسانكم وكلُّ من يُنطِقُكم

    سواه معقولُ اللسان أو مُجَرّْ

    So God restrict what I have poured forth

    After you, nothing remains in me

  71. قد بلَغَ المفصلَ مني جازري

    فاللّهَ فيّ أن يَحُزَّ ما جَزَرْ

    To hope for provision or expect tomorrow

    So fulfill your debt of bounty to me in seclusion

  72. لم تبق فيّ بعدكم بقيّةٌ

    يُرجَى لها رفدُ غدٍ ويُنتظَرْ

    For my poetry has paid its vows to you

  73. فاقضوا ديونَ جودكم في خَلَّتي

    فقد قضى شعريَ فيكم ما نَذَرْ
