1. مَن مُوصلٌ بالسؤال والقَسَمِ

    إليّ عِلماً عن دارة العَلمِ

    Who will inform me with questions and oaths

    Of the abode of knowledge and its aims

  2. أُحدوثة تنسَخ الغليلَ فيل

    تام من القلب غيرُ ملتئمِ

    A fresh spring that washes away sorrows

    Completely from the heart, though unhealed

  3. هيهات نجدٌ والمخبرون به

    قلَّ عَناءُ السؤَال من أممِ

    Alas! Najd and those who speak of it

    Few asked, though toil of asking burdens nations

  4. ليس سوى نفحِة الصَّبا لك أو

    لمحةِ برقٍ بالغور مبتسمِ

    Naught remains but a breath of breeze for you

    Or a smiling flash of lightning in the wilderness

  5. وخادعاتٍ وهْناً يصانعك ال

    ليلُ بها من كواذب الحُلُمِ

    And deceptions, weakness seducing you

    With lies of dreams in the night

  6. تطرُقُ لقطَ القَطاةِ خائفةً

    مكايدَ الراصدين في الطُّعُمِ

    Furtively visiting remnants of residue

    Fearing the guile of lurkers in bait

  7. نمتُ لها نومةَ المُريب وأص

    حابي هجودٌ من جانبَيْ إِضمِ

    I slept the sleep of the wary, my companions

    Despairing ones at my flanks, huddled

  8. والليلُ تسري نجومُه الشهبُ في

    جحافلٍ من خيوله الدّهُمِ

    The night marched on, its shooting stars in

    Regiments of its swift dark horses

  9. فزارنا قُرِّبَتْ زيارته

    من آنسٍ بالظلام محتشِمِ

    So they visited, their visit brought near

    By one familiar with the darkness, dignified

  10. يعرف رحلي من الركاب برجْ

    عات التشكِّي وأنّةِ السَّقمِ

    Who knew my journey from the riders, the refund

    Of my misgivings, and the moaning of my illness

  11. ثم دنا جاذباً عِطافِيَ وال

    خوفُ يلوّي منه فقال قمِ

    Then he drew near, pulling my sleeves, and

    Fear twisting away from him, he said arise

  12. قم لي فلولاك لم أجُبْ خطراً

    قلت ولولا سراكَ لم أنمِ

    Arise for me, else I would not risk danger

    I said, and without your secret I'd not sleep

  13. أُكرومةٌ للدجى وهبت ذنو

    ب الصبح فيها لشافع الظُّلمِ

    A respected one for the darkness, who gifted the

    Morning winds with it, intercessor for the obscured

  14. وعارضٍ تصبح البلادُ به

    في نعمةٍ من مواهب الديَمِ

    An adversary, with whom the lands in bounty

    Become, with gifts of the priceless blood

  15. عدَّلَ حتى تلاحق الحَزنُ بال

    سهل وسَوّى الجِفارَ بالأُطُمِ

    He reformed until sorrow followed the plains

    And leveled the uneven with the flat

  16. راخَى له المِرزمانِ وانشالت ال

    عقربُ عن كلِّ هاجم عَرِمِ

    The reins are slackened and the hour hand stops

    From every attacker, every crawling worm

  17. يوغِلُ في الأرض ماؤه مُولِداً

    منها بطونَ الحوائِل العُقُمِ

    Delving into the earth, his water births

    From it abdomens of the infertile dunes

  18. ترى القراراتِ منه رافلةً

    في أزُرٍ من عمائم الأكَمِ

    You see settlements from him seeping

    In robes of turbans of the incomplete

  19. تقولُ عنه الرياضُ مفصِحةً

    أحسنَ ما قال شاكرُ النِّعمِ

    The meadows speak of him plainly

    Best said, as the thankful say of blessings

  20. كأنما الله قبلَه قطّ ما

    قلّد أرضاً صنيعةً لسُمِي

    As if God had never created an earth

    More wondrous in making than his artistry

  21. تعبث آثارُه بمُشعرةِ ال

    أعضادِ قرعَ الجنُوبِ واللِّممِ

    Its ruins toy with the terrain of the ribs

    Smitten by the south wind and the hot breaths

  22. قد أكلَ الجدبُ أطيبيها فلم

    يَبقَ سوى رسمها لمرتسمِ

    Truly famine has taken its sweetest parts

    Naught remains but its outlines for the painter

  23. بعيدة العهدِ بالعشيب من ال

    أرض ورقراقِ مائها الشَّبمِ

    Distant from the grass of the land, and the plants

    Of its fresh water sprouting slender leaves

  24. تنهضُ أشباحُها النواحلُ في

    حاجاتنا بالجسائم العُظُمِ

    Its desolate ghosts rise up for our needs

    In grand entreaties and greatest hopes

  25. تطلب من ذي الرياستين قَرَا ال

    ركبِ ونارَ القِرَى على العلَمِ

    Seeking from the Lord of the Two Sanctuaries rest

    For the riders, and the warmth of villages atop the banners

  26. وعزّةَ الجارِ في ربيعةَ وال

    دارِ وأمنَ الحمام في الحرَمِ

    And honor of the neighbor in Rabi'a and the house

    Safety of the doves in sanctity of the inviolable

  27. والقائلِ الفاعلِ الذي سِيط جُو

    دُ العُرْبِ منه بطيبة العَجَمِ

    And the speaker, doer, who prepared generosity

    From the Arabs through the bouquet of non-Arabs

  28. تزجرها باسمه الحُداة فتن

    قاد بغير الخِشاشِ والخُطُمِ

    The transgressors rebuked it with his name, so they

    Repented without stubbornness or indignance

  29. فخَلِّ عنها لسّاً ومَضمضَةً

    ثم استقِمْ في السُّرى بها ورُمِ

    So leave them with healing drinks and rinsing

    Then walk straight amongst them thereby and throw

  30. فاليومَ ترعَى وادي الغضا وغداً

    ترعَى بنعماه واديَ الكرمِ

    For today Ghada valley is grazed, and tomorrow

    Grazed through his gifts, the valley of generosity

  31. يبلُغنَ لا ضَيِّقَ الخِناق من ال

    عَيِّ ولا مسنداً من السأمِ

    They will not suffer narrowed straits of need

    Nor ever a pillar of boredom

  32. ولا قصير الإزار إن جذبَ ال

    جدبُ بأذيال خائِض القُحَمِ

    Not the short of garment, if pulled by

    The famine, hems soaked in the mud pools

  33. أملس لا تعلَقُ العيوبُ به

    معطَّر العِرض أبيض الشِّيَمِ

    Smooth, no flaws clinging to him

    Perfumes honor, purest of repute

  34. غضبان مما غار الأبيُّ له

    وفي الرضا شُهدةٌ لملتقمِ

    Wrathful over the protective father's jealousy of him

    In contentment the sweetest of sips

  35. إما ترى ما لديه قسراً فخذ

    عنه وإما سألت فاحتكمِ

    Either you see what he has perforce, so take

    From him, or you asked, so commit to him

  36. عسفاً ولطفاً ويجمع الماء وال

    نار غرار المهنّد الخَذِمِ

    Coercion and kindness, gathering water and

    Fire, cave of the polished old sword

  37. جاد فقال اللّوام حسبُك فاز

    داد فقالوا ياليت لم نَلُمِ

    He gave generously, so the blamers said enough, and he

    Increased, so they said would that we did not blame

  38. وذوّقوه العقبَى فقال لها

    عُدّةُ صبري وجامعُ الرِّممِ

    And they tasted the fruit, so he said to it

    My patience and He who collects rubble

  39. أعجبُ من عاملِ الرزق عدوٌّ

    قاسمُ الرزق غيرُ متَّهمِ

    Stranger than the granter of provision, an enemy

    Dividing provision, above suspicion

  40. لله والمجدِ والحفيظة وال

    عزائم العالياتِ والهممِ

    For God, glory, protection, determination

    Sublime wishes, and greatest resolves

  41. ما ضُمِّنَتْ من أبي المعالي حُبَى ال

    دستِ وأدَّتْ جوامعُ الكَلمِ

    Whatever was endowed by my father, the most high gifts

    That perfected the treasures of speech

  42. وربّ عوصاءَ تعصِب الفمَ بال

    ريق وتهفو بالناطقِ الخصِمِ

    Though an intractable foe obstructs the mouth with spittle

    And babble against the speaking opponent

  43. نافرةِ الجانبين مبهمة ال

    وجهِ على جامع ومنتظمِ

    Repelling both flanks, vague of face

    Over the inclusive and well-ordered

  44. عزَّت على القائلين وهي له

    تَذِلُّ بين اللسان والقلمِ

    Too hard for speakers, though it submits to him

    Between tongue and pen

  45. تفعل خرساءَ في صحائفها

    فعلَ زئير الآسادِ في الأجَمِ

    It acts as the roar of lions in his pages

    As if he writes it in their savageness, in blood

  46. كأنه من ردَى النفوس بها

    يكتبها في طروسها بدمِ

    Virtues of its heritage and earnings

    His by true chronology and antiquity

  47. فضائل إرثها ومكسبها

    له بحق الحِدْثانِ والقِدمِ

    Oh son of the defenders of their rights

    In the dawn and the feeders in darkness

  48. ياابن المحامين عن حقائقهم

    في الصبح والمطعمين في العَتَمِ

    And the strikers of enemies with their edges

    And those reaching farthest with their ancestors

  49. والضاربين العدا بحدّهِمُ

    والبالغين المدى بجِدّهِمِ

    Your king walked the ages in ascent

    And descent, towering over the pyramid

  50. مشى على الدهر ملكُكم يفعاً

    وعانِساً مشرِفاً على الهرَمِ

    You were pleased with the best of nights before

    And enjoyed the tales of nations

  51. ورضتُمُ أظهُرَ الليالي المقا

    ديمِ وطُلتُم سوالفَ الأُمَمِ

    Your efforts made people righteous

    And your kindness to them made them corrupt

  52. قد أصلح الناسَ سعيُكم لهمُ

    وأفسد الناسَ لطفُكم بهِمِ

    The hands of kings tossed you, but no

    Disgrace bruised your temples, no bond muzzled

  53. وقلَّبتْكم أيدي الملوك فلم

    يغمِزْ قناكم عارٌ ولم يَصِمِ

    The weak cried for you in war, so you were

    Allies of their king

  54. واستصرخوكم مستضعفين على

    حربٍ فكنتم أنصارَ ملكهمِ

    They took your opinion, so it guided them

    Advice confused, correctness blind

  55. واستقدحوا رأيَكم فأرشدَهم

    والنصحُ حيرانُ والصوابُ عمِي

    So tumult does not shake you, nor

    Does change of blessings enter you

  56. فلا تزعزعْكم الخطوب ولا

    تدخُلْ عليكم صوارفُ النِّعمِ

    The bracelets and crowns do not slip

    Above your palms and the pyramid summits

  57. ولا تزلْ منكم الأساورُ وال

    تيجانُ فوق الأكفِّ والقِممِ

    I made you my kin, so never did

    Disappointment rap its knuckles from regret

  58. شريتكم بالورى فما قرَع ال

    غبْنُ بظُفري سنِّي من الندمِ

    I became through your judgement, each lad

    Among you, dutiful in loyalty

  59. وصرتُ منكم بحكمِ كلِّ فتىً

    منكم لحقّ الوفاء ملتزمِ

    I bloodied heads of enemies with your glory

    Their skulls bowed before my feet

  60. دستُ رؤوسَ العدا بمجدكُمُ

    وهان هاماتُهم على قدمي

    You wrapped me in your cloak, so the veins

    Of Abd al-Rahim pulsed in my womb

  61. لففتموني بعِيصكم فسرَت

    عروقُ عبد الرحيم في رحمي

    But distractions that bare, turning

    From my right, excluding a relative from duties

  62. لكن هَناتٌ تعرو فتلفِتُ عن

    حقّي وتُقصي القريبَ من ذممي

    And preoccupations, events, distracted

    Your faces from my long-held rights

  63. وشاغلاتٌ حوادثٌ صَرفتْ

    وجوهَكم عن حقوقِيَ القُدُمِ

    I met you in intimacy, then estrangement

    Returned me in garments of dignity

  64. ألقاكُمُ آنساً فيرجعُ بي

    إعراضُكم في ثيابِ محتشمِ

    Weariness, and the tombs are absent, and

    Seclusion without stumbling or crime

  65. ملالةٌ والمزار غِبٌّ وإق

    صاءٌ بلا زَلَّةٍ ولا جُرُمِ

    And disdain, had I drank it in the vessel of water

    My arteries would not heal from its chill

  66. وجفوةٌ لو شربتُها في إنا

    ء الماءِ صَديانَ ما شَفى قَرَمي

    It was not softened by my deception in words

    Or actions, though magic is in my hands and mouth

  67. لم تَرقِها خُدعتي بقولي ولا

    فعليَ والسحرُ في يدي وفمي

    My sincere hopes in healing my state in you

    Mocked the sickness, and glory is amazed by you

  68. تشمتُ آماليَ الصحائح في

    إشفاءِ حالي فيكم على السَّقَمِ

    In wealth of power, and my poverty

    What do I say, the seas foamed in your hands

  69. ويعجَب المجدُ من وجودكمُ

    على الغنى قدرةً ومن عَدَمي

    The temperaments of time surely shifted

    But my blame is on fortunes, and my doubt

  70. وما أقول البحارُ غاضت بأي

    ديكم وحالت طبائعُ الدِّيَمِ

    To you the crooked dealing of fate

    That I am in your prime

  71. لكن عتابي على الحظوظ وشك

    واي إليكم تَحيُّفُ القِسَمِ

    Yet it is my time, in a compressed state

    I thought if days served your prosperity

  72. وأنني في زمان عزّكُمُ

    وهو زماني بحالِ مهتضَمِ

    It would be of my service

    That your fires if rising

  73. كنت أظنّ الأيامَ إن خَدمتْ

    إقبالكم أن يكون من خدمي

    I'd be the first catching in my embers

    That the world vanish while you

  74. وأن نيرانكم إذا ارتفعت

    أوَّل ما يعتلقن في فَحَمي

    Kept your promise to me, neither ending nor collapsing

    Let not that hope fade, nor

  75. وأن تزولَ الدنيا وأنت على

    عهدك لي لم تَزُل ولم تَرِمِ

    Be breached the privacies of those sanctums

    I have debts deferred with you, they

  76. فلا يخبْ ذلك الرجاء ولا

    تُهتَكْ مصوناتُ تلكم الحُرَمِ

    Ate my flesh and drank my blood

    So repay, for ability came, and lighten

  77. ولي ديونٌ أُجِّلن عندك قد

    أكَلن لحمي وقد شرِبن دمي

    Your back, debts are burdens

    And seek with it the epitome of beauty

  78. فاقض فقد أمكنَتْ وخفِّفْ بها

    ظهرَك إن الديون في الذّممِ

    As is custom, not monetary epitome

    And wear of celebrations an ample garment

  79. واقصِد بها غايةَ الجمال على ال

    عادة فيها لا غايةَ القِيَمِ

    In glory, its train upon the feet

    Knit by fortune, however long and wide

  80. والبس من المهرجان ضافيةً

    في العزّ أذيالُها على القَدَمِ

    In the lion pelts and fish remains

    Tied with eternity, its embroidery

  81. ينسُجُها السعدُ ما أطال وما

    أعرض في الأَسْدِياتِ واللُّحَمِ

    So the world cannot say to it “unravel”

    And meet the fast with whitened cheeks, and flowing hair

  82. معقودةً بالخلود طرّتُها

    فما تقول الدنيا لها انفصِمي

    Celebrate the supported, and fast

  83. وقابلِ الصومَ أبلجَ الوجه جذ

    لانَ وعيِّدْ مؤيَّداً وصُمِ
