هل عند هذا الطلل الماحِلِ

من جلَدٍ يُجِدي على سائلِ

Is there anyone at this ruined abode,

With patience to help a questioner?

أصمُّ بل يسمع لكنه

من البِلَى في شُغُل شاغلِ

Though deaf he may be, he can hear -

Preoccupied with constant worries.

وقفتُ فيه شبحاً ماثلاً

مرتفداً من شبح ماثلِ

I stood there like a specter,

Seeking help from a specter.

ولا ترى أعجبَ من ناحلٍ

يشكو ضنا الجسم إلى ناحلِ

You won't see anything stranger than a she-camel

Complaining of lean flesh to another she-camel.

لهفَكِ يا دارُ ولهفي على

قَطينِك المحتمِل الزائلِ

My longing, O house, and my longing for

Your pair of ruined and transient pillars,

قلبيَ للأحزان بعد النوى

وأنتِ للسافي وللناخلِ

My heart is for sorrows after intimacy,

While you are for someone who abandoned you.

مثلُكِ في السقم ولي فضلةٌ

بالعقل والبلوى على العاقلِ

I have superiority in illness and affliction

Over the reasonable, due to my intellect and trials.

يا أهلَ نَعمانَ اسمعوا دعوةً

إن أسمَعتكم من لوى عاقلِ

O people of Nu'man, listen to my call

If an impassioned wise man can make you hear.

هل زورةٌ تُمتِعنا منكُمُ

وهناً بميعاد الكرى الباطلِ

Will you allow us some joy, even for a day or an hour,

At the fading of our transient life?

أم هل لجسمٍ قاطنٍ أن يَرَى

عودةَ قلبٍ معَكمْ راحلِ

Or can someone housed see

The return of a heart that left you?

قد وصلَتْ فانتظمتْ أضلعي

سهامُ ذاك الهاجرِ الواصلِ

The arrows of that departing beloved have arrived,

And found their mark in my ribs.

رمى فأصماني على بابلٍ

مقرطِسٌ لا شَلَّ من نابلِ

He shot me and made me deaf to Babylon -

An unerring archer, no arrows go astray.

ألحاظه السحرُ وألفاظه ال

سكر وهذا لك من بابلِ

His glances are magic and his words

Are sheer intoxication - and that to you from Babylon.

رُدُّوا ولو يوماً ولو ساعةً

على الغضا من عيشنا الزائلِ

Return, even if only for a day or an hour,

To the prime of our vanishing life.

لي ذلّةُ السائلِ ما بينكم

فلا تفتْكم عزّةُ الباذلِ

I have the humiliation of a beggar among you,

So do not let arrogance make you sever ties.

أفقرني الحبُّ إلى نَيْلكم

ولم أكن أرغبُ في النائلِ

Love has made me need your bounty,

Though I never desired to gain anything.

لا أسألُ الأجوادَ ما عندهم

وأجتدى منكم ندى الباخلِ

I do not ask the generous for what they have,

And seek from you the dew of the stingy.

ولا يرى المنجزُ عَطفِي له

وجهي وأرجو عِدَةَ الماطلِ

The fulfiller does not see my devotion to him,

Yet I hope for procrastination from the delayer.

لم تغمِز الأطماعُ لي جانباً

ولا أمالت مِنّةٌ كاهلي

Greed has not winked suggestively at me,

Nor has conferring favor burdened my shoulders.

نغَّصَ عندي العُرف أني أرى

طولَ يد المعطي على القابلِ

Of a clay naturally disposed to glory,

Spreading the scent of the molder's generosity.

جرّبتُ أقسامي فما أشبهَ ال

جائر من حظِّيَ بالعادلِ

The ground never brought forth the like,

Softened by its pouring rain.

آليتُ لا أحملُ فَرضَ العلا

ونفلَها إلا على حاملِ

It was entrusted among its grains

As a sanctuary for the drinker and washer.

ممن يرى أن التماسَ الغنى

يدٌ على المأمول للآملِ

Or a pearl the sea brought forth freely,

So it cast it upon the shore.

سهلٌ على العابثِ في ماله

وإن طغَى صعبٌ على العاذلِ

With it Abdurraheem split the earth,

Revealing a perfect star or moon.

من طينةٍ في المجد مجبولةٍ

تبعثُ طيباً كرمَ الجابلِ

So it spread, filling the horizon

Blessings upon the progeny and descendants!

لا طفتِ الأرضَ بها مزنةٌ

تصفَّقتْ من مائها الهاطلِ

A people, when they draw the ropes of love

And declare allegiance, they defy the complacent and the indolent.

واستودعتْها من قراراتها

حمىً على الشارب والغاسلِ

The meteors are submissive to them,

Like the inferior to the superior.

أو درّة جاد بها بحرُها

عفواً فألقاها على الساحلِ

Or they ride in a raid against a party

Rushing to confront ineluctable destiny.

شقَّ بها عبدُ الرحيم الثرى

عن كوكبٍ أو قمرٍ كاملِ

It is their pride that their covenants

Have impacted surviving blades and withering spears.

فانشرتْ تملأ عرضَ الفلا

بورك في النسلِ وفي الناسلِ

The spear exults in one who wields it,

And the slain boasts of the killer.

قومٌ إذا شدّوا الحبَى وانتَمَوا

شقُّوا على النابهِ والخاملِ

People either seek their generosity,

Or flee from that which is unobtainable.

فطامنتْ شهْبُ الدرارِي لهم

تطامُنَ المفضولِ للفاضلِ

Their hands shatter opposition abroad,

And open sustenance inwardly.

أو ركِبوا جرياً إلى معشرٍ

تبادروا بالقدَرِ النازلِ

How many times they reformed the corruption of their age,

And propped up justice with equity!

يُزهى بأن لامَسَ أَيْمانَهم

ما هُزَّ من نَصلٍ ومن ذابلِ

And they judged with justice in a dynasty

Where truth overcame falsehood.

ويستطيل القِرنُ لاقَى الردى

بهم وما في الموت من طائلِ

He who entrusts rule to other than them

Is a pleasure-seeker in temporary enjoyments.

فيشرُفُ السيفُ بمن شامه

ويفخَرُ المقتولُ بالقاتلِ

I warded off my age fearfully from them

With the rare support in failing times.

والناس إما طالبٌ جودَهم

أو هاربٌ ما هو بالوائلِ

The stalwart Ali braced my back -

I did not lean on him for crooked ends.

تَكسِر بالخارج أيديهمُ

وتَفتحُ الأرزاقَ بالداخلِ

By the chief of the faith we penetrated

The darkness of the ruinous land.

كم أصلحوا الفاسدَ من دهرهم

وقوَّموا المائدَ بالعادلِ

Whenever a stray she-camel turns

To a steed in the wide desert.

واحتكموا بالعدل في دولةٍ

تحكُّمَ الحقِّ على الباطلِ

Playing with the land fancifully or gravely

With two rhyming meters declining or inclining.

مفوِّضُ الملك إلى غيرهم

معزِّبٌ في النَّعمِ الهاملِ

Bearing ephemeral visions and heavy

Assets upon the conveyor.

دافعتُ دهري خائفاً منهمُ

بناصرٍ في الزمن الخاذلِ

Above its humps and litters

Are marks of its owner's name.

وشدَّ ظهري من عليٍّ فتىً

لم أستند منه إلى مائلِ

Until we moaned with the blossoming of wishes -

Fertile, and the copious season of generosity.

إلى زعيم الدين خضنا بها

غِمار تيهِ البلدِ الماحلِ

Thus there was no fear for the secure,

No neighbor or deprivation for the questioner.

كل فتاةٍ جائلٍ نِسعُها

على عسيبٍ في الفلا جائلِ

At the hand that mocks the stagnant

Years with the water of the dripping bucket.

تلاعب الأرضَ حَساً أو زَكاً

قِدْحَيْنِ بالخافضِ والشائلِ

And the first slice that forms the exemplary

Full moon's humility when waning.

تحمِلُ أشباحاً خِفافاً وآ

مالاً ثقيلاتٍ على الناقلِ

Its good tidings strike for the delegation

The radiance of lightning in downpour.

فوقَ حواياها وأعجازِها

من اسمه وسمٌ على القافلِ

He gained precedence in the ten foremost virtues

Over the reprehensible and stalemated.

حتى أنخنا بربيع المنى ال

زاكي وربعِ الكرمِ الآهلِ

He held dominance in the cradle, nothing

Escaped the lion's place but a cub.

فكان لا خوفَ على الآمن ال

جار ولا حرمانَ للسائلِ

With a begetting father,

And a son surpassing himself in merit.

على يدٍ تهزأ في جامد ال

عام بماءِ المزنةِ السائلِ

I tested people, so you were not to me

A barrier in affection or severing ties.

وغُرَّةٍ تخلُقُ في سُنَّة ال

بدر خشوعَ الغائرِ الآفلِ

When will I experience a lofty peak to deflect

Disasters from my chest and shoulders?

يقدَحُ للوفد بها بشرَه

شعشعةَ البارقِ في الوابلِ

Let people be the pipes of the world,

While you are where achievements are realized.

أحرز خصلَ السبق في عشرة ال

أولَى على القارحِ والبازلِ

So let your bounties suffice me for my words,

If the doer is requited with the like.

وساد في المهد فما فاتهُ

شِبلاً مكانُ الأسدِ الباسلِ

Every distant one's journey has phases,

The rider overtakes the pedestrian.

بوالدٍ من قبله تالدٍ

وزائدٍ من نفسه فاضلِ

Inhabited with verses whose

Parallels are not found in time's scrolls.

بعتُ بك الناسَ فلم أنصرفْ

بندمٍ من غَبَنِ الناسِ لي

Provision for one who travels seeking riches,

And spoils for the arriving caravan.

وأعلقَتني بك ممسودةٌ

ما أسحلتْ منها يدُ الفاتلِ

Now seriously, now in jest - not adorned

By praiser or flatterer's embellishments.

تلوَّنَ الناسُ فما كنتَ لي

بحائلِ الود ولا ناصلِ

Its flaws, along with loving it, are its shortcomings

In the madness of its beauty's confusion.

متى أثقِّفْ صَعدةً تدفع ال

أحداثَ عن صدري وعن كاهلي

Harbingers of congratulations to you

In every standing pillar and passing day.

يكنْ بنو الدنيا أنابيبَها

وأنتَ منها موضع العاملِ

And whenever a year bid farewell with them

They committed you to the trust of the next.

فلتَجزِني نُعماك من مِقولي

إن كوفيءَ الفاعلُ بالفاعلِ

Destinies fall short of your dominion

As the barefoot falls short of the shod.

كلّ بعيدٍ في السُّرَى شوطُها

تسابِق الفارسَ بالراجلِ

قاطنة تحملُ أبياتُها ال

أمثالَ في المنتسِخ الراحلِ

زاداً لمن سافر يبغي الغنى

ومغنماً للقادم القافلِ

مَطارباً في الجِدّ والهزل ما

وُسمنَ بالمادحِ والغازلِ

عدوّها معْ حبِّه عيبَها

في خَبلٍ من حسنها خابلِ

مبشِّرات بالتهاني لكم

في كلّ يومٍ عَلَمٍ ماثلِ

وكلّما ودَّع عامٌ بها

أعطاكم الذمةَ في القابلِ

تقصِّر الأقدارُ عن ملككم

ما قصر الحافي عن الناعلِ
