1. يُذنب دهرٌ ويستقيلُ

    ويستقيم الذي يَميلُ

    Time sins then repents,

    And the crooked becomes straight.

  2. والعيش لونٌ يوماً ولونٌ

    كلاهما صبغةٌ تحولُ

    Life has a color one day, and another the next,

    Each a changing hue.

  3. وربّما حنّت الليالي

    ثم لها مرة غفولُ

    Perhaps nights once sang softly,

    Then again blew unmindful.

  4. فاسر فإن الدنيا طريقٌ

    أسْهَلَ مِيلٌ وشَقَّ مِيلُ

    So travel on, for this world is a road

    Sometimes smooth, sometimes rugged.

  5. لا غرو أن تظلَع المطايا

    فيها وأن يغلط الدليلُ

    No wonder the mounts stumble

    And the guide goes astray.

  6. والرجلُ الضربُ من تَساوى

    في نفسه الصعبُ والذَّلولُ

    A man of equal parts difficulty and gentleness

    Rises and falls.

  7. فهو إذا انحطّ أو تعالى

    لا التيهُ منه ولا الخُمولُ

    He is neither lost in decline

    Nor idle in ascent.

  8. كالسيفِ لا زَينُه التحليِّ

    يوماً ولا عيبهُ الفُلولُ

    Like a sword whose adornment is not its embellishment,

    Nor its defect, rust.

  9. فقلْ وإن نال من أناس

    في حسد المجد ما تقولُ

    Say that if he obtained from the envious

    What you say in jealous glory,

  10. أبناء عبد الرحيم أفْقٌ

    لم يهتضم شمسَه الأفولُ

    The sons of Abdel Rahim are horizons

    Whose sun never sets.

  11. إن شرّقتْ فالصباحُ منها

    أو غرّبتْ فابنها الأصيلُ

    If it rises, dawn is theirs;

    If it sets, their noble son remains.

  12. لها علاها فإن وجدتم

    طولاً إلى نيلها فطولوا

    For them, ascend the heights if you find

    The road to their heights too long.

  13. لا تحسَبوها إذا توارتْ

    أنّ التواري لها نزولُ

    Think not when they disappear

    Their setting is a descent.

  14. فالأُسْدُ أُسْدٌ في الغيل وال

    نصولُ في قُربها نُصولُ

    The lion in attacking or resting

    Is ever a lion in its lair.

  15. والماء في السحب مستسرٌّ

    لحاجةٍ عندها يسيلُ

    Water held in clouds flows

    When the need makes it spill.

  16. قد يهجر القومُ عُقرَ دارٍ

    وهم بأخرى حيٌّ حُلولُ

    A people may leave an abode in ruins

    While alive and well in another.

  17. والبدر في أفقه رديدٌ

    ما بين أبراجه نقيلُ

    The moon traverses its mansions

    Crossing from one to the next,

  18. وهو على ترك ذا لهذا

    مباركٌ وجهُه جميلُ

    Blessed in leaving these for those,

    Beautiful its departing face.

  19. ما اعتزلوا أن أطاف عجزٌ

    بهم ولا صدّهم نُكولُ

    They parted not out of incapacity

    Nor dissuaded by despair.

  20. ولا رأَوا هضبةَ المعالي

    من تحت أقدامهم تزولُ

    Nor did they see the summit lower

    Beneath their feet and crumble.

  21. كم جذَعٍ منهُمُ فتِيٍّ

    لم يُعيِه حِملُه الثقيلُ

    How many a delicate sapling of theirs

    Bore a weight beyond its strength!

  22. وبازلٍ فيهمُ جُلالٍ

    أنهضه بالعلا البُزُولُ

    How excellent the burdens shouldered

    By the towering heights!

  23. لكن لأمرٍ يغيب عنكم

    تَعْلَقُ بالقُنّة الوُعولُ

    Yet for something obscured from you

    Did the fledglings cry.

  24. فاجتنبوا اللوم وانظروها

    غداً إذا استنوق الفصيلُ

    So refrain from blame, and see them tomorrow

    When the colt is rested,

  25. وأُنكِحتْ والصَّداقُ وعدٌ

    وغير أكفائها البُعولُ

    And wed to peers, her bride-price a promise,

    Not destitute suitors.

  26. وهي إذا استصرختْ سواكم

    أصرخها الناصرُ الخَذولُ

    When she calls none but you,

    The negligent aid her cries.

  27. هم قطبها كيفما أديرتْ

    وهم إذا ضلّت السبيلُ

    They are her axis however she turns,

    Her guide if she loses her way.

  28. تقضي وتمضي الأمور فيها

    وهي إلى أمرهم تؤولُ

    Through them affairs advance or retreat,

    To their command does she submit.

  29. لله والمجدِ هم فروعاً

    تمّت بإقبالها الأصولُ

    Branches of glory are they,

    Made firm by her roots.

  30. توحّدوا بالعلا فبانوا

    والناسُ من بعدهم شُكولُ

    United in glory they shone,

    Mankind after them but forms.

  31. آباء صدقٍ دلّتْ عليهم

    شهودُ أبنائها العدولُ

    Fathers of sincerity, proven so

    By their just sons' witness.

  32. وأصدقُ النقل في صفات ال

    أسود ما قالت الشُّبولُ

    Most veracious transmission of descriptions

    No calumniators can impugn.

  33. قومٌ إذا ما السماء ضنّت

    عاذت بأيديهم المحُولُ

    A people when skies grew stingy,

    To their hands did the deprived flee.

  34. أحلامُهم رُزَّنٌ ثِقالٌ

    ومالهُم طائشٌ جهولُ

    Lofty their dreams, substantial their weight;

    Possessions of theirs wild and confused.

  35. فتحتَ عِمَّاتِهم جبالٌ

    وفوق أقلامهم سيولُ

    Under their turbans, mountains were humbled,

    And over their pens, torrents poured forth.

  36. إذا زعيم الملك انتفاهم

    يحمي من الضيم أو ينيلُ

    Did the sovereign seek to deprive them,

    To protect from wrong or attain a prize?

  37. فاقض على نازح بِدانٍ

    واقطع فقد دلَّك الدليلُ

    Judge the complainant clearly,

    The proof before you is manifest.

  38. واسأل عليّاً بما بناه ال

    حسينُ واقنع بما يقولُ

    Ask Ali what was built by

    Al-Husayn, and accept what he says.

  39. أبلجُ لا رفدُه نسِيءٌ

    فينا ولا عهده غُلولُ

    A full moon: no waning diminishes him,

    No association makes him disloyal.

  40. ولا نداهُ الحيُّ المعافَى

    بالمطل مَيْتٌ ولا عليلُ

    Time has not cheated him of vigor,

    He lives; neither dead nor sick.

  41. لِيَم على الجود والتعنِّي

    أن تُعذَلَ الديمةُ الهَطولُ

    Why blame his munificence and sympathy

    If gifts like pouring rains are presumed?

  42. سقَى وروَّى وفي يديه

    من ماله جَدْولٌ نحيلُ

    He gave drink and irrigated, though only

    A slender stream his wealth could afford.

  43. وضنَّ لُوّامُه ومنُّوا

    وفيهمُ دِجلةٌ ونيلُ

    While hoarders, recipients of his gifts, found fault;

    In their hands, Tigris and Nile!

  44. فيومُ سؤَّاله قصيرٌ

    وليلُ عذَّاله طويلُ

    So brief his day of reckoning,

    While long the night of his torment.

  45. مضى وما استرهفَتْ سِنُوه

    فلم يخُنْه حدٌّ كليلُ

    He went, his years not overburdened,

    Nor betrayed by any weakness of old age.

  46. أحرزَ شوطَ الصِّبا إلى أن

    تناكصتْ خلفَه الكُهولُ

    Then he sped crookedly, and the steeds

    Returned their reins, aggrieved.

  47. ثمَّ جرى أعوجاً فقامت

    تَغُضُّ أرساغَها الخيولُ

    His discordant pace tears the ground,

    Raising dust the wretched slave smells,

  48. يُنْشِقُها نقْعُهُ غباراً

    يشُمُّه الراغم الذليلُ

    The song of the trenchant, gleaming sword

    Feeding the lean, famished hyena.

  49. شِيمَ لهامِ العدا فأغنى

    غَناءَه الصارمُ الصقيلُ

    You were created furious at every soul

    For whom ascension's glory is redundant.

  50. وحمَّلوه الجُلَّى فأوفى

    بيذبلٍ كاهلٌ حَمولُ

    And all bodies lack glory, so you

    Seethe in their breasts, simmer in their minds.

  51. خُلِقتَ غيظاً لكلِّ نفسٍ

    حبُّ العلا عندها فُضولُ

    Merit exalted by you was debased,

    And the martyred saint and his murdered son.

  52. وكلّ جسم لا مجدَ فيه

    فأنت في صدره غليلُ

    Time cast you out of a garden

    Whose breeze was acceptance, whose air welcome.

  53. عزَّ بك الفضلُ فاستقادتْ

    أمُّ الندى وابنُها قتيلُ

    Charms that saddened, then softened

    Like water and absorption.

  54. وافترَّ منك الزمانُ طَلْقاً

    عن روضةٍ ريحُها قَبولُ

    A rising sun in the darkness

    From which its moons and lights originate.

  55. شمائلٌ أحزنتْ ولانت

    كأنها الماءُ والشَّمولُ

    None approach their beauty,

    While others' beauty remains concealed.

  56. وطلعةٌ تُشرِقُ الدياجي

    منها وأقمارُها أُفولُ

    You have possessed my soul through affection

    Until I gained freedom through bondage.

  57. للحسن وجهٌ أغرُّ منها

    والحسن في غيرها حجُولُ

    No fleeting authority could change

    The loyalty I pledged.

  58. ملكتَ رقّي بالودّ حتّى

    صرتُ من العِتق أستقيلُ

    You have sown, fertilized, while pretenders

    Are barren ground, sparse vegetation.

  59. ولم يحوِّلك عن وفاءٍ

    عهدتُهُ دولةٌ تدولُ

    You have not left me to a guide

    Whose place in friendship is false.

  60. رشتَ وأخصبتَ والخوافي

    حُصٌّ ونبتُ المرعَى وبيلُ

    He takes offense if I say, "O Generous One,"

    Knowing that he is stingy.

  61. ولم تكلْني إلى دعيّ

    منِصبُه في الندى دخيلُ

    For more apropos than my words

    Is one whose actions contradict my speech.

  62. يغضب إن قلتُ يا جواداً

    لعلمه أنه بخيلُ

    While praise on a wrist is a bracelet,

    On other hands, only shackles.

  63. فإنّ أولى من رابَ قولي

    مَن فعلُهُ ضدُّ ما أقولُ

    Nothing beyond indifference and rejection,

    Like a serpent in holes out of sight.

  64. والمدحُ في مِعصَم سوارٌ

    وفي أكفٍّ أُخرَى كُبولُ

    The patron excuses, the friend nothing,

    Nor is the intimate pardoned.

  65. سوى جفاءٍ يعنُّ نبذاً

    كما أغبَّ الحيا الوَصُولُ

    So seize now, while still near,

    What was far in its reach.

  66. يَعذِر فيه المولى المُولِّي

    شيئاً ولا يُعذَر الخليلُ

    Strike even a spark, for in darkness

    The wick ignites however small the flame.

  67. فابتدر الآن من قريبٍ

    ما كان من شوطه يطولُ

    Disdain not the little of it,

    Perhaps a little may benefit.

  68. واقدح ولو جذوة فإن ال

    ظلماء يورى فيها الفتيلُ

    Show the Nayrouz face a face

    That smiles in its welcoming dish.

  69. ولا تراعِ القليلَ فيها

    فربّما ينفع القليلُ

    A new day thatdispels

    Whatever your kingdom's gloom harvested.

  70. والق بوجه النيروز وجهاً

    يضحك في صحنه القبولُ

    Witnessing your ascendancy is feasible,

    Nothing of your command is beyond reach.

  71. يومٌ جديدٌ يردُّ غضّاً

    من ملككم ما جنَى الذُّبولُ

    Whatever glory you lost will return,

    Its absence from you only temporary.

  72. يشهدُ أنَّ السعودَ حالٌ

    من أمركم ليس يستحيلُ

    My poetry testifies without sin,

    My witness is enough confirmation.

  73. وإنّ ما غاب من علاكم

    غيرُ بطيءٍ به القُفولُ

  74. شهادة لا فسوقَ فيها

    شعري بتصديقها كفيلُ
