1. قد قنِعنا أن نرقُبَ الأحلاما

    لو أذِنتم لمقلةٍ أن تناما

    We have resigned ourselves to watching dreams

    If only a lute would be allowed to sleep

  2. يالُواةَ الديون إني غريمٌ

    لكُمُ لو قضيتموه الغَراما

    O debts that weigh heavy, I am a debtor to you

    If only you'd let me pay off this passion

  3. مالَكم لا يُذمُّ منكم بغاةُ ال

    عيبِ إلا إلّاً لكم أو ذِماما

    Why is it that none of you vilify the wanton

    Except to blame or rebuke you

  4. بقلوبٍ لا تُحسن الصفحَ غُلظٍ

    ووجوهٍ لا تُحسن الإجراما

    With unforgiving hearts and rough ways

    And faces that know no mercy

  5. لا أُحِلّ الفراقَ من رشإٍ في

    كم أحلَّت نواه نفسا حراما

    I cannot bear to part from a meadow where

    My soul found its illicit desires fulfilled

  6. صار حظي من بعده عشق ذكرا

    ه إلى أن عشقتُ فيه الملاما

    After it my fortune was to love a memory

    Until I found fault in it

  7. لا ادعت بعده الغصونُ قَواما

    عند عيني ولا البدور تَماما

    After it the branches did not stand erect before me

    Nor the full moons shine perfect

  8. يا صريعَ العيون إن فتَّر الغن

    جُ لحاظا بها فَترتَ عِظاما

    O you who slay eyes, if the singing languished

    Veiling them, your bones also languished

  9. حبَّذا بابل على ذكرك السح

    رَ وعيشٌ ببابل لو داما

    Blessed be Babylon for your memory's sake

    And to live in Babylon if only it lasted

  10. وطريقٌ إلى المُرَاخِ نفضنا

    ه على بعده ضناً وغراما

    We brushed aside the road to Murakh

    Spurning it for your absence and passion

  11. وربيعٌ من عصر لهوٍ عصرَنا

    ه أنِ اللهُ لم يهبهُ أثاما

    And a spring whose carefree days we spent

    As if God had not given it any sins

  12. ومتى قلتَ عد ليوم مضى من

    نِي فإني لا أعرف الأياما

    And when you say, recount a day gone by with me

    I truly know not the days

  13. قل لقوم عدُّوا الغنى كلَّه البخ

    لَ وعدُّوا السماحةَ الإِعداما

    Tell those who deemed all wealth misfortune

    And generosity, demise

  14. حسبوا من قنوطهم أنهم لا

    يجمعون النعيم والإنعاما

    They supposed from their despair that they

    Could not attain bliss and favour

  15. حسبُ عبد الرحيم أنَّ بنيه

    وصلوا باتباعه الأرحاما

    It sufficed Abd al-Rahim that his sons

    Clung to kinship in following him

  16. صدَقوا عنه فاستقاموا مصلّي

    ن على إثره ومرَّ أماما

    They were truthful about him, so they walked straight

    Praying after him, passing by

  17. فاقَهم وهو منهم ابن عليٍّ

    والخوافي مكفورة بالقدامى

    He surpassed them, and he was among them the son of Ali

    And the Khouafis abound with great men

  18. ساد بالمجد ثمّ ما شئت من جَد

    دٍ إذا اعوجَّت الخطوبُ استقاما

    He prevailed in glory, then whatever ancestral glory

    Crooked events straightened

  19. تأكل العينُ منه ما تشربُ النف

    س اتفاقا في حبّه والتئاما

    The eye feeds on him what the soul drinks

    United in loving him and coming together

  20. قمرٌ زُيِّنتْ سماءُ علاه

    بنجوم من رهطه تتسامَى

    A moon whose exalted sphere the sky

    Adorned with stars of his kin of high rank

  21. لا يَعُدُّ الغلامُ منهم أخاه

    ساد حتى يشأى الكهولَ غلاما

    The youth does not count his brother

    Until matured into a youth from a boy

  22. يالَ عبد الريم أحصدتُمُ لي

    سببا كان في سواكم رماما

    O Abd al-Rahm, I have harvested for you

    A cause that was blighted by any but you

  23. قعدَ الدهرُ بي لئيما فقمتم

    تحمِلون الخطوبَ عنّي كِراما

    Time sat with me in baseness, so you rose

    Bearing adversities for me with nobility

  24. أَنهِضوني بوصفكم إنني ما اع

    تَدتُ أن أقهرَ الجبال زحاما

    Rouse me by describing you, I never supposed

    I could move mountains crowded together

  25. للتهاني وصفٌ يخُصُّ وإن كا

    نت سعاداتُكم تعُمّ العاما

    For congratulations there is a description particular to you

    Though your fortunes encompass all

  26. وَفَّر اللهُ يا أبا القاسم اليو

    مَ من الخير عندك الأقسامَا

    May God, O Abu al-Qasim, apportion for you

    The good in multiples today

  27. وأراني فيك التي خيرُ حُسَّا

    دك حالاً من شمَّ فيها الرَّغاما

    And show me in you that best

    Of your vitality which has sensed the scent of musk

  28. بالغا فوق ما تروم من العز

    زِ إذا فات طالبا ما راما

    Excelling beyond your aspiration for glory

    When a seeker falls short of his hopes

  29. في نحور العدا شجا ما غدا النا

    سُ إلى النحر سائقين السَّواما

    With trenchant blades in the enemies' throats

    As people drive to the slaughter
