1. بَكَرَ العارِضُ تحدُوه النُّعامَى

    فسقاكِ الرِّيَّ يا دارَ أُماما

    The early morning dew, chased by the ostriches,

    Watered you, O abode of my love.

  2. وتمشَّتْ فيك أرواحُ الصَّبا

    يتأرَّجنَ بأنفاس الخُزامَى

    The breezes of youth blew through you,

    Scattering the perfume of flowering trees.

  3. وإذا مَغنىً خلا من زائرٍ

    بعدما فارق أو زير لِمَاما

    And when the singing stopped and no visitor remained

    After one bid farewell or took leave,

  4. فقضى حفظُ الهوى أن تُصبحي

    للمحبّين مُناخا ومُقاما

    Passion decreed that you become

    A refuge and dwelling for lovers.

  5. أجتدِي المزن وما ذا أرَبي

    أن تجودَ المزنُ أطلالاً رِماما

    Demand rain though the clouds are miserly,

    Reluctant to shed more than a drizzle.

  6. وقليلاً فيكِ أن أدعو لها

    ما رآني الله أستجدي الغماما

    And I have little to ask of them

    Except what God knows I seek from the clouds.

  7. أين سكانك لا أين هُمُ

    أحجازا أقبلوها أم شآما

    Where are your dwellers, did they go

    To the Hijaz or Syria?

  8. صُدِعوا بعد التئامٍ فغدت

    بهمُ أيدي المَوامي تترامَى

    Scattered after being united, your hands

    Stretch out for them in vain.

  9. وتبقُّوا كلّ حيرانَ بليدٍ

    يسأل الجندل عَنهم والرَّغاما

    Each left confused and foolish

    While the sand grouse and quails seek them.

  10. يا لُواةَ الدَّين عن ميسَرةٍ

    والضنيناتِ وما كنَّ لئاما

    O haven of faith from Maysara

    And selflessness - never stingy or mean!

  11. قد وقفنا قبلكم في ربعكم

    فنقضناه استلاما والتزاما

    We stood before you in your dwellings

    And broke our fasts there in the evenings.

  12. سَعِدَ الراكبُ تحتَثُّ به

    جَسْرةٌ تخلط وَهْداً وإكاما

    Happy is the rider carried by his camel

    Over the smooth sands and rugged valley.

  13. تطَأ العسفَ فتُدمِي خفَّها

    جبَهاتُ الأرض شجّاً ولطاما

    She walks proudly though her hooves

    Bleed as she crosses the rocky earth.

  14. تَتَنزَّى أَنَفاً في خُلْقِها

    أن تُطيع السوطَ أو تُرضِي الزِّماما

    Too dignified to obey the whip

    Or give in to the pull of reins.

  15. تُطعِمُ البيد إذا ما هجَّرتْ

    شِبَعَ البيداء نِقْياً وسُلامَى

    She feeds the desert when abandoned,

    The wilderness is sated and at peace.

  16. ماؤها بَسْلٌ على أظمائِها

    أو تَرَى بالنَّعف هاتيك الخياما

    Her water is fresh at the springs,

    Or found in pools by the tent ropes.

  17. وبجرعاء الحمى قلبي فعجْ

    بالحمى فاقرأ على قلبي السلاما

    My fevered heart pounds within me,

    Read my fevered heart its rites.

  18. وترجَّلْ فتحدَّثْ عَجَبا

    أن قلباً سار عن جسمٍ أقاما

    Dismount and speak wonderously

    Of a heart roaming free from its corpse!

  19. قلْ لجيران الغضا آهِ على

    طيب عيش بالغضا لو كان داما

    Say to the neighbors of my love: Alas!

    That such sweet life with my love did not last.

  20. نصِل العامَ وما ننساكُمُ

    وقُصَارَى الوجد أن نسلَخَ عاما

    We cross the years and do not forget you

    Though passionate longing rips through the year.

  21. حمِّلوا ريحَ الصَّبا نشرَكُمُ

    قبلَ أن تحمِل شيحاً وثُماما

    Carry to me on the scent of the morning breeze

    Your spirits, if my eyes are granted sleep.

  22. وابعثوا أشباحَكم لي في الكرى

    إن أذِنتم لجفوني أن تناما

    The one lost in darkness stands at your gates

    Does he wake or slumber blissfully?

  23. وقَفَ الظامي على أبوابكم

    أفيَقضِي وهْو لم يشفِ أُواما

    Why care who I quenched when thirsty,

    Or who was denied my wine and drink?

  24. ما يبالي مَن سقَيْتُنَّ الَّلمَى

    منَعكُنَّ الماءَ عذباً والمُداما

    And wonder at one who sees wrong as lawful

    While deeming wine forbidden!

  25. واعجبوا من أن يَرَى الظَّلْمَ حَلالا

    شاربٌ وهو يَرى الخمرَ حراما

    I blame you, but to whom can I complain?

    You are the sickness, who can bring the cure?

  26. أشتكيكم وإلى من أشتكي

    أنتم الداء فمن يشفي السَّقاما

    You and fate are a sword and a mouth

    That never tire of blows and strife.

  27. أنتمُ والدهرُ سيفٌ وفمٌ

    ما تملّانِ ضِراباً وخِصاما

    Whenever I complain of my luck

    My plight only grows worse and violent.

  28. كلّما عاتبتُ في حَظِّيَ دهِري

    زاده العتبُ لجَاجا وعُراما

    And when I try to make peace

    It is as if I bare my neck to the sword.

  29. وإذا استرهفتُ خِلّاً فكأني

    منه جرَّدتُ على عُنْقي حُساما

    I blamed my days for betrayal

    And they increased their tyranny boundlessly.

  30. لمتُ أيّامي على الغدرِ فقد

    زادت الإجرامَ حتى لا مَلاما

    I resorted to silence, complaining to none,

    After words failed to express my pain.

  31. ولزِمتُ الصمتَ لا أشكو وصمتي

    بعدَ أن أفنيتُ في القول الكلاما

    Men abandoned defending my rights

    While glory wept for them as they stood.

  32. قعد الناسُ بنصري في حقوقٍ

    قعدَ المجدُ يبَكِّيها وقاما

    God warded off and protected

    Men who did not fail me when called.

  33. دفعَ اللهُ وحَامَى عن رجالٍ

    قد رعَوْني لم يُضيعوا لي سَواما

    Their generosity clothed me so I would not

    Beg, their pride refused shame upon me.

  34. كفَّنِي جودُهمُ أن أجتدى

    وأبى عزّهُمُ لي أن أُضاما

    They appeared in the wings of my imagination as stars

    And aligned with the arrows of my goal.

  35. طَلَعوا في جُنح خَلَّاتي نجوماً

    وانتحوا نحو مَراميَّ سهاما

    Their light illuminated my hopes

    Lost and darkness amongst the people.

  36. وأضاءت لي أمانيُّ بم

    عَشِيَتْ في الناس تِيهاً وظلاما

    Known for their generosity until they became

    Illuminating beacons in the dark of fate.

  37. عُرِفوا بالجود حتى أصبحوا

    من وضوحٍ في سواد الدهر شاما

    Why disparage a noble past?

    Or covenants of old with them?

  38. لمَ أذمِّم حُرمةً سالفةً

    في معاليهم ولا عهداً قُدامَى

    They gained no generosity from me, but

    Were created from the clay of glory as nobles.

  39. ما استفادوا كرما فيّ ولكن

    خُلِقوا من طينةِ المجد كِراما

    Born from the mother of glory, her teats

    Gushed for them after she had run dry.

  40. من رجال لبِسوا الملكَ جديدا

    وافتلَوا ناصيةَ الدهر غلاما

    They inherited the origin of supremacy

    And so suckled souls that harbored perfection.

  41. روَّضوا العلياءَ حتى اقتعدوا

    ظهرَها الذُروةَ منه والسَّناما

    They left people sitting hopeless

    Lamenting their powerlessness and standing idle.

  42. وإذا الأيامُ غمَّت أقبلوها

    غُرَرا تقدَح في الخطبِ وِساما

    They unlocked the doors of generosity

    And found martyrdom in the leader of the faith.

  43. ببني عبد الرحيم استُحلبتْ

    مزن الجود وقد كن جهاما

    He came seeking harmony and became a miracle

    Whose very being showed he came as imam.

  44. أولدوا أم الندى فالتقحت

    ببنيها بعدَ أن حالت عقاما

    He surpassed people by generations, a respected

    And gentle trunk that did not bite on the reins.

  45. ورِثوا أصلَ العلا فافترعوا

    بنفوس ضمِنَتْ فيها التّماما

    He carried virtues on his shoulders

    So both his sides were adorned in splendor.

  46. تركوا الناس قعودا للحبى

    يشتكون العجز أفواجا قِياما

    He reached the utmost glory from which he began

    His branch never wavered until it stood straight.

  47. فتحوا باب الندى واستشهدوا

    بزعيم الدين إذ كان ختاما

    He observed the state through his management

    Waking the guard when the enemy slept.

  48. جاء مأموما وقامت آية

    فيه دلت أنه جاء إماما

    If the wolf saw his flock approach

    It would go blind with fear or pretend not to see.

  49. سبق الناسَ قُروما قُرّحا

    جذعٌ رِيضَ وما عضَّ اللجاما

    He protected it with sword, vision and tongue

    When it drew near, reached and stretched.

  50. وحوى السؤددَ من أطرافه

    فكلا جنبيه أيمانا وساما

    He healed its afflictions through men

    Who had cared for it but increased its distress.

  51. وانتهى في الفضل من حيث ابتدا

    ما تثنَّى غصنُه حتى استقاما

    He within it, his brother and his brother

    A coalition supported in harmony and power.

  52. ورعَى الدولةَ من تدبيره

    يقِظ العين إذا الذائدُ ناما

    Resolute like fate shining,

    And wise like columns in order.

  53. لو رأى الذئبُ قريبا سرحَهُ

    لعَمِي من فَرقٍ أو لتعامى

    A hand the sword trembles in

    And a generosity that trained the clouds.

  54. حاطها سيفاً ورأياً والساناً

    إن تَداهَى وتَلاحَى وترَامى

    And qualities that quenched the thirst

    Of the honorable whenever heads and bones quaked.

  55. وشفَي أدواءَها من معشرٍ

    قبلُ طَبُّوها فزادوها سَقاما

    And ideals perfected without need

    For addition except endurance.

  56. فهو فيها وأخوه وأخوه

    يذبُلٌ سانَدَ رَضوَى وشَماما

    A nobility disdainful of your earnings

    Unless you obtained it with integrity.

  57. عزماتُ كالمقادير مضاءً

    وقضايا كالأنابيب انتظاما

    You were my pillar in my days

    Though they were my opponent and rivaled me in glory.

  58. ويدٌ يرتعد السيفُ بها

    وسماحٌ لقَّنَ الجودَ الغماما

    Through you I was relieved of burden

    Though cares pressed heavy on my sides.

  59. وسجايا تشرَب الصهباءَ منها

    كلّما أرعشَ رأساً وعِظاما

    How many hands nurtured me, their affection

    Flowing after I was weaned!

  60. ومعالٍ كَمُلتْ ما تبتغي

    لك فيها زائدا إلا الدواما

    They realized my condition so their kindness

    Was like cool water and peace in the heat of poverty.

  61. شرفٌ كان عِصامِيّاً فلم

    يرضَ عن كسبك أوصرتَ عِصاما

    You were the cord of love I held most dear

    And most faithful in adversity.

  62. أنتَ من جاثيتُ أيّامي به

    وهي خَصمٌ فتحامتني احتشاما

    Why then did affection withdraw from me?

    And caring fade away, why?

  63. وتروَّحتُ من الثقل وقد

    حفيتْ جنبايَ ضغطا وزحاما

    How much forgetfulness while the intercessor for me

    Stirs memories of me and concern!

  64. كم يدٍ أرضَعْتَنِي دِرَّتَها

    بعدَ أن قد كنتُ عوجلتُ الفطاما

    If you are veiled from me, frowning sets in

    So when can I hope for a smile?

  65. أدركتْ حالي فكانت بالندى

    في ضِرام الفقر بردا وسلاما

    Why did bitter boredom surprise me

    From one who had tended passionately to my love?

  66. كنتَ لي أمتنَهم حبلَ ودادٍ

    في الملمَّاتِ وأوفاهم ذماما

    But I excuse you fully, so seek

    The excuse of glory if glory blames.

  67. فعلام ارتجعَ الإعراضُ مني

    ذلك الإقبالَ والعطفَ علاما

    Consider what answer for the lofty

    If they grow angry or shun me.

  68. وكم النسيانُ والشافعُ لي

    يَخفِرُ الذّكرةَ بي والإهتماما

    Then long for my superiority and seize

    The remnants you find of me hastily.

  69. وإذا سُحْبُك عني عَبستْ

    فمتى آملُ من أَرضِي ابتساما

    Draw it in slowly, sweetly

    To inundate the aloofness abundantly.

  70. والملالُ المرُّ لِمْ فاجأني

    من فتىً كان بحبي مستهاما

    Your characteristics shake the earth

    Traversing and settling the land.

  71. ونَعمْ أعذرُكم فالتمسوا

    عِذرةَ المجد إذا ما المجدُ لاما

    Were my miracles constituted in you

    The poetry would pray to it and fast.

  72. وانظروا أيَّ جوابٍ للعلا

    إن أتت تغضَب لي أو تتحَامَى

    Or the dead would come to life in shyness

    As you spread beauty, decayed and forgotten.

  73. فتمنَّوْا فَضلتي واغتنموا

    ما وجدتم من بقاياي اغتناما

    So listen attentively and remain

    A possession protecting it when dawn disperses the darkness.

  74. واستمدّوها نِطافا حُلوةً

    تُنهلُ الإعراضَ غَزْرا وجَهاما

    And one morning a garden of my dwellings

    Strolled leisurely like a bride on a Nayrouz morning.

  75. تنفُض الأرضَ بأوصافكُمُ

    طَبَقَ الأرض مسيراً ومقاما

    And a delegation came to untie pledges

    Approaching the group and uniting.

  76. لو أُقيمت معجزاتي فيكُمُ

    قِبلةً صلَّى لها الشعرُ وصاما

    Each day your gatherings have

    A profitable market found nowhere but in you.

  77. أو زقا الأمواتُ يستحيونها

    نشرت بالحسن رِمّاتٍ وهاما

  78. فاسمعوها عُوَّداً وابقوا لها

    وَزَراً ما صرَفَ الصبحُ الظلاما

  79. واستماحت روضةٌ ربعيّةٌ

    صبحةَ النيروز وَطْفاً ورُكاما

  80. وسعى الوفدُ يَحُلُّون الحُبَى

    نحو جَمْع ويزِفّون جِماما

  81. كلَّ يوم للتهاني عندكم

    سوقُ ربح في سواكم لن تُقاما
