1. ينام على الغدر من لا يَغارُ

    ولا يُظلمَ الحرُّ فيه انتصارُ

    He who betrays sleeps unaware of jealousy

    And the free man is not wronged without vengeance

  2. علَيَّ اختيار اختيارُ الحبيبِ

    وإن خانني فإليَّ الخِيارُ

    It is up to me to choose my beloved

    And though he betrays me, the choice is mine

  3. ملكتُ فؤادي على بابلٍ

    وعقَّ أخاه الفؤادُ المُعارُ

    I have conquered my heart over Babylon

    While the heart of its brother remains defiant

  4. وفيمن سمحتُ به للحُمو

    ل أبيضُ ليلٍ سُراه نهارُ

    And in the one whose affection I allowed

    The dark night is illuminated by day

  5. إذا شكرتْ حُقْبُهُ خصرَه

    تظلَّم من مِعصَميْه السِّوارُ

    When her waist expressed gratitude

    Bracelets on my wrists complained

  6. وبدرٌ وما عُدَّ من شهره

    سوى هجره والتجنِّي سِرارُ

    It is a full moon, though not yet mid-month

    Except for its absence and veiled mysteries

  7. تطلّعَ يُتبِعني مقلتي

    ه مختمراً من حُلاه الخِمارُ

    My eyelashes gaze longingly to follow me

    Bashfully peeking from beneath her veil

  8. وكنتُ الحليمَ وفي مثلها

    تخِفُّ الحلومُ ويهفو الوقارُ

    And I was forbearing, though in the likes of her

    Patience grows timid and dignity bewildered

  9. أُحبُّ الجفاءَ على عزِّةٍ

    ولا أحمل الوصلَ والوصلُ عارُ

    I prefer aloofness to honored dignity

    And do not bear affection though affection is shameful

  10. قَضيتَ وتهوَى ويرضَى الفتى

    بطيفٍ يزور وربعٍ يُزارُ

    You have decided, loved and been pleased, my lad

    With a phantom visiting and a quarter frequented

  11. وهبَّتْ تلوم على عفّتي

    وتحذر لو قد كفاها الحِذارُ

    And she complained of my chastity

    And warned, though warning would not suffice

  12. تقول القناعةُ موتُ الفتى

    إذا أُلِفتْ والحياةُ اليسارُ

    Satisfaction is the death of a lad

    When accustomed, and life is affluence

  13. وما الناسُ لو أنصفتني الحسا

    بَ والأرضُ إلا صديقٌ ودارُ

    People are no more than a friend and home

    Even if my merits were done justice on Earth

  14. وما ارتبتُ حتى رأيتُ اليمي

    نَ تُعقَد في الحقِّ عنها اليسارُ

    I never gained respect until I saw

    The right tied up while the left extended

  15. وتَطمعُ بالشعر لي في الغنى

    متى نَصح الطمعَ المستشارُ

    You hope for poetry to make me wealthy

    When greed is counseled by an advisor

  16. ولم تدرِ أنّ المساعي الطوا

    لَ آفتُهن الحظوظُ القِصارُ

    You do not know that ambitious efforts

    Are often undermined by brief blessings

  17. وما علمُ طبِّك من علّتي

    وصبريَ والكرمُ الإصطبارُ

    Your medicine does not know my malady

    Patience, generosity, resilience

  18. إذا لم يُبَيِّنْ أَسىً أو أُسىً

    فكيف يَبينُ غنىً وافتقارُ

    If it does not show sorrow or joy

    How can it show wealth or poverty?

  19. خَبَرتُ رجالاً فما سرَّني

    على الودّ ما كشفَ الإختبارُ

    I have known men, and their loyalty

    Did not please me however much tested

  20. ولما غلِقتُ برهن الوفاء

    لهم تركوني بنجدٍ وغاروا

    When I secluded myself, they proved loyalty

    By abandoning me, fleeing to the heights

  21. فلا يُبعد اللّهُ من ظلمهم

    أخلاَّءَ حَصُّوا جَناحي وطاروا

    May Allah not distance those who wronged me

    My brethren gathered my wings and flew

  22. وجرَّبتُ حظِّي بمدح الملوك

    مِراراً وكلّ جناها مُرارُ

    And I tested my fortune praising kings

    Repeatedly, though its harvest was bitter

  23. وكم من مُقامٍ توقَّرتُ في

    ه طاروا له فرحاً واستطاروا

    How many an abode I was honored within

    They joyously fled it, seeking even higher

  24. وخفَّتْ مسامعُ هنَّ الجبالُ

    وجفَّتْ أناملُ هنَّ البحارُ

    Their ears were deafened by lofty mountains

    Their fingers numbed by the endless seas

  25. وأُخرَى ولم يأتني نفعُها

    ويا ليت لم يأتِ منها ضِرارُ

    And others which brought me no benefit

    Would that they had not brought harm!

  26. إذا ما دعوتُ زعيمَ الكفا

    ةِ أدركني الماءُ والخطبُ نارُ

    When I called upon the champion of the clan

    I was met by water and troubles aflame

  27. وقام لها ناهضَ المنكِبيْن

    يُقلَّصُ عن قدَميْه الإِزارُ

    He rose, shoulders hunched, cinching his loincloth

    As clouds parted from his frowning brows

  28. إذا خاض نَقْعَيْ حِمىً أو حِجاً

    تفَرَّج عن حاجبيْه الغمارُ

    A generous man who freely gave me victory

    And the spread of cavalry without my triumph

  29. كريمٌ تبرَّعَ بالنصر لي

    وبالخيلِ من دون نصري انتشارُ

    He refused to suffer defeat and flee

    Though my only weapon was flight

  30. أَبَى أن أضامَ وردَّ الفِرارَ

    عليّ وأقصى سلاحي الفِرارُ

    Without a ransom he sought from me

    To obligate a pact or treaty

  31. بلا قَدَمٍ تتقاضاه لي

    فتُرعَى له ذمّةٌ أو ذِمارُ

    Rather, equality entitled him

    To claim right upon me, for kin are kin

  32. بلى في التجانس حقٌ جناه

    عليّ وجارُك بالجنس جارُ

    I wonder that the slanderer dared to steal

    And break the covenant of my gentle tongue

  33. عجبتُ لباغيَّ أن أسترَقَّ

    وكسرَى أَبِي ولساني نِزارُ

    He intended exposure of my weakness

    Though my profit in selling my honor was loss

  34. أرادَ لنقصٍ به بذلَهُ

    وربحيَ في بيع عِرضي خَسارُ

    He found safety in satirizing me

    While my hopes were ruined like dicing

  35. أمانٍ أصابت له في سواي

    وخابت معي والأماني قِمارُ

    The blood of nobility boiled in him

    A lad who never sleeps and vengeance seethes

  36. دمُ الفضلِ ثارَ بِهِ أن يُطَلَّ

    فتىً لا ينام وللمجدِ ثارُ

    When loose tongues are tied down

    By containment and defeat

  37. قؤولٌ إذا الألسنُ المطلَقا

    تُ قيَّدَها حَصَرٌ وانكسارُ

    His rage is seen describing his own

    And who describes fire but sparks?

  38. يُرَى فَوْرُهُ واصفاً غَوْرَهُ

    وهل يصفُ النارَ إلا الشّرارُ

    The trials of the two dynasties suffice

    To consult and beseech the likes of you

  39. كفى الدولتين عناءُ الحسي

    ن مَن يُستشارُ ومَن يُستجارُ

    They were toppled, while the course

    Of their affairs relies upon you

  40. وقُلِّبتا وإليه مصي

    رُ أمريْهما وعليه المَدارُ

    You rose to glory without stumbling

    In slippery footholds difficult to escape

  41. وقمتَ ودون المَقام الحميدِ

    مزالقُ يصعُبُ فيها الفَرارُ

    Those before you tried and avoided

    While those after you reconsidered and consulted

  42. وقبلكَ قد جرَّبوا واجتَنَوا

    وبعدَك وانتصحوا واستشاروا

    And found resolution in your example

    He who bared himself would be shredded by blades

  43. وحلَّوا بسيماك مَن جرَّدو

    ه لو قُطِعتْ بالحُليِّ الشِّفارُ

    That shows their incapacity

    Though commissioned, they are helpless dependents

  44. فذاك مُدِلٌّ على عجزه

    يُؤمَّرُ وهو عِيالٌ يُمارُ

    Quick yet considered in speech

    His words err or stumble

  45. طريرُ العِيانِ صديُّ اللسانِ

    خُطَا لفظِهِ خطأٌ أو عِثارُ

    When arrogance spreads its wings

    Petty sorrows fold away his cheer

  46. إذا نشر الكِبرُ أعطافَه

    طوت بشرَه الغَرَماتُ الصِّغارُ

    The mantle of leadership is too tight

    Though his robes flow freely beneath

  47. لثوب الرياسةِ ضيقٌ علي

    ه معْ وُسْعِ أثوابهِ وانشمارُ

    Strange that one not born to it

    Claims lineage on borrowed merits

  48. غريبٌ إذا أن فيها انتسب

    تَ أدلَى به نسبٌ مستعارُ

    May you be rewarded for rule on Judgment Day

    And pride on the day the prideful are judged

  49. جزتك عن المُلك يومَ الجزاء

    وعن فخره يومَ يُجزَى الفخارُ

    Endless oceans of praise and admission

    Cascades of the sweetest water

  50. غوادٍ من الحمدِ والإعتراف

    غوارفُ من كلِّ عذبٍ غِزارُ

    Your generosity improves souls

    And enriches the lands

  51. تجودك نَعماءَ تزكو النفو

    سُ فيها وتَغْنَى عليها الديارُ

    As for me, the others are either

    Storytellers or residents wherever they roamed

  52. وعنّي سوائرُ إما تحطُّ ال

    رواةُ وقاطنةٌ حيث ساروا

    Maidens graced with beauty

    For whom adorers discard their honor

  53. عذَارَى يُجلَّى لهنَّ الجمالُ

    ويُخلعُ في حبِّهنّ العذارُ

    Imagining whatever charms they displayed

    As scandals when peddled by pimps

  54. يُخَيَّلُ ما نشرَتْ من علاك

    عياباً متى نشرتْها التِّجارُ

    When mothers of sons gossiped and sons grew

    They wished for their pardon

  55. إذا حَبَّرتْ أمّهاتُ القري

    ض أخبارَها وبنوه الكبارُ

    Of whatever others they raided and stole

    Your glory admits it was moderation

  56. تمنَّوا بجهدِهم عفوَها

    على ما سَبَوا غيرَهم أو أغاروا

    If a servant intercedes for a sinner

    Wounds of hope are healed

  57. يُقرُّ لمجدك إِكثارُها

    بما سلَفتْ أنّه الإقتصارُ

    And if gratitude fully rewards a man

    Its pinnacle with you is triumph

  58. فإن شفعَ العبدُ في مذنبٍ

    نجت وجروحُ الأماني جُبارُ

  59. وإن بلغَ الشكرُ حقَّ امرىء

    فغايتُها مَعَك الإنتصارُ
