دعاها معقَّلةً بالعراقِ

إلى أهل نجدٍ هوى مطلَقُ

She called Mu'aqqala in Iraq

To the people of Najd, an ardent love

فباتت تماكس ثِنيَ الحبا

لِ منها الكراكرُ والأسؤقُ

She spent the night tossing and turning in the folds of affection

For her, both the feeble and the strong sob

فيأبَى عليها المريرُ الفتيلُ

ويُسمح ذو الرُّمَّةِ المخلقُ

Yet the tender twig refuses her

And the slender-waisted, delicate one is forgiving

تحنُّ ويا عجباً أن تحن

نَ لو أنها سائلٌ يُرزقُ

She pines - how strange for her to pine

If she were a beseecher, she'd be provided for

وما هي إلا بروقُ المنى

خِلاباً وما السفحُ والأبرقُ

She is but flashes of purpose

Alluringly - and neither the lowland nor the lightning bolt

فهل لمجعجعها أن يروحَ

لَوَ اَنّ الرواحَ بها أرفقُ

Can her constant whimpering depart

If the soul within her were more gentle

مراتعُها أمسِ أمرَى لها

وتربُ معاطنها أرفقُ

Her pastures yesterday were sick for her

And the soil of her dwellings is more gentle

أتت بابلاً ونبت بابلٌ

بها وبكى المشئمَ المعرِقُ

She came to Babylon and Babylon sprouted

For her and the gloomy, dirty one cried

فخلِّ لها طُرقَها والظلا

مَ تحلُمُ في السير أو تخرُقُ

So clear her paths and the shadows

She dreams whilst travelling or wanders

وإن كذبتْ هاديات النجوم

فإنّ لها مُقلاً تصدقُ

Even if the guiding stars lie

She has a confidante who believes

عسى رقُّها في ديار الخمول

إذا شارفت عزَّها يُعْتَقُ

Maybe her gentleness in the lands of oblivion

When she nears her glory, will be freed

وقم أنت فاسبق بها المدلجين

فعفوُ المياه لمن يسبِقُ

And you - precede the late risers with her

The waters show grace to the early starter

فإما اعتذرتَ وإما بلغتَ

فحظُّك غايةُ من يلحقُ

Whether you offer an excuse or achieve

Your fortune is the goal of one who succeeds

كم النوم تحت ظلال القنوع

وفوق القذى جفنُك المطبَقُ

How much sleep beneath the shade of contentment

With eyelids closed shut on the gravel

تهُبُّ عليك رياحُ المنى

فتَروَى بما أنت مستنشقُ

Winds of purpose blow upon you

Quenching you with what you inhale

وخِلفُ العلا وأفاويقُها

لغيرك يُصبَح أو يُغبَقُ

Whilst the heights and their precipices

Are for others, dawning or gloaming

وكم تستقيمُ فتمشي الحظوظُ

وحظُّك أعمى الخُطى مُزلقُ

And how many times do fortunes go straight

Yet yours has a stumbling, slippery step

تُخفَّضُ من حيثُ تبغي العلا

وتُحرَمُ من حيث تَسترزِقُ

Lowered from where you seek the heights

Deprived from where you seek provision

ترودُ لنفسك غيرَ المَرادِ

فرِجلٌ سعت ويدٌ تُخفقُ

You intend for yourself other than what is intended

So the foot strides and the hand flails

مطالبُ تُنفِقُ فيها الزمانَ

ومن صُلبِ عمرك ما تُنفِقُ

Demands you expend time upon

Yet of your lifetime you expend nothing

وحولك حيث ترى راعياك

ثرىً منبتٌ وحياً مغدِقُ

Whilst around you, wherever you see your shepherds

Pasture sprouting and plentiful life

ودارٌ تعزُّ على أهلها

ولم تتقلقل بك الأينقُ

A house too dear for its people

And you were not shaken by the pillars

وأسماع أبناء عبد الرحي

م تُصغي وأبوابُهم تُطرَقُ

And the hearing of the sons of Abdul Rahim

Listens whilst their doors are knocked

وأنجمهم لك رعياً تضيء

فتوري وشمسُهُمُ تُشرِقُ

Their stars shine light for you

So you find your way and their sun rises

وباسم الوزير فعذ بالوزي

ر يُفتَح بابُ الندى المغلَقُ

In the minister's name, so seek the aid

Of the one who opens the door to bounty when shut

ألم تر للناس في فترةٍ

وقد أكلَ الأحلمَ الأخرقُ

Have you not seen people in a moment

When the unwise least expects, the cunning devours

ومن ركب الشرَّ طالت يداه

وطارت وَخُودٌ به معنِقُ

And he who rides evil, his hands become long

And the cheeks alongside him are chained

وفي كلّ سرحٍ أبو جعدةٍ

مكانُ الرُّعاةِ به يُنعَقُ

And in every pasture there is an Abu Ja'da

The place of shepherds bleats therein

تَجَشُّمُهُ رحضُ ما دنَّسوا

وإحسانُه جمعُ ما فرَّقوا

His tolerance gathers what they scattered

And his kindness combines what they divided

وكنتَ تغيبُ فتشرَى الأمو

رُ ثمّ تعودُ فتستوسقُ

You were absent so affairs spread

Then you returned so it poured

حَمَى شرفُ الدين أطرافَها

ومن خلفها طاردٌ مرهقُ

The sanctity of faith guarded its borders

With a pursuer exhausted behind her

وأضغاث أرسانها في الرقابِ

نَواصل بالكفّ لا تعلقُ

And the rabble of its helpers against the necks

Our palms, not hung, support

فقوَّمَ والذئبُ مستأسدٌ

وعدّل والفحلُ مستنوقُ

So he corrected whilst the wolf gathers strength

And he judged whilst the stallion ripening

كريمٌ تصلصلَ من طينةٍ

أعان المُطيبَ بها المعبقُ

A generous one from a refined mould

Who aids the sweet smelling to perfume

رأت عينُ ساسانَ فيها النمو

وَ وهي على كفّه تشرقُ

The eye of Sassan saw in it growth

As it shone in his palm

فشجَّرها شرفاً لاحقاً

إذا هجَّن النسب الملصَقُ

So he nobly cultivated it thereafter

When the attached lineage ripened

تلألأُ في أفقها أنجمٌ

بحاشيتَيْ بدرها تُحدِقُ

Stars shone in its horizon

Focusing at the edges of its full moon

تودّ البحارُ لأصدافهن

نَ لو هي عن مثلها تُغلَقُ

The seas wish their shells closed

If they were to close from its like

رعاك مليكٌ رعى الملكَ منك

بعينٍ على الضيم لا تُطرِقُ

A king shepherded you, shepherding kingship through you

With an eye that does not glance away from unfairness

وأنقذه بك فانتاش وه

و محترِشٌ ما له مَنفَقُ

And through you he rescued it, so it flourished

While it was a tottering, no escape

حملتَ الوزارة حملَ المخفِّ

وقد أثقلتْ غيرَك الأوسُقُ

You carried the ministry, carried unnoticeably

When the burdens had weighed down others

وكم عالجوها بخُرِق الأكفّ

ورأيُك في طبِّها أحذقُ

And how they handled it, hands tearing

Yet your view in its remedy is more skilful

وسعتَ بصبرك إصلاحَها

وصدرُ الزمان بها ضيّقُ

You strove with patience to fix it

While the times' chests were narrowed by it

وأخَّرهم عنك إذ قدّمو

ك أنك تفرِي الذي تخلُقُ

And they turned away from you, though you preceded them

That you untie what you knot

وتَرتُقُ ما فَتقته الرجالُ

ولا يرتُقون كما ترتُقُ

And ascend what the men ruptured

And they cannot ascend as you do

فكونوا لها كلما عُطّلتْ

حلىً منكم القُلبُ والأطوُقُ

So be for it, whenever paralyzed

Jewels - your hearts and your circles

وزدْ شرفاً أنت يا تاجَها

ولا افترق التاجُ والمفرِقُ

And you - add more honor, you crown upon it

Let not the crown and headband separate

يريد سواكم ثناءً بها

فتأبَى عليه وتستطلقُ

None other than you seeks its praise

Yet it refuses him and snarls

ويستروح الناسُ أثوابَها

وأردانُها بكم أعبقُ

People feel refreshed by its breezes

And its streams are most fragrant through you

علوتَ فما تنتحيك الصفاتُ

بسهمٍ ولو أنه مغرِقُ

You rose so traits cannot diminish you

Not even with a plunging arrow

فسيَّان في مدحك الناجم ال

مُعذَّرُ والمنتهِي المفلقُ

Swords are drawn in your praise, the starry

Excused, and the conclusive, articulated

إذا جدتَ أنطقتَ من لا يَبين

وإن قلتَ أخرست من ينطقُ

When serious, you speak flawlessly

And if silent, you hush the vocal

فقد شكّ ربُّ الكلام البليغ

أيكسد عندك أم يَنفُقُ

So the Lord of eloquent speech thanked

Does it expire with you or run out?

فداك وكيف له لو فداك

طليقٌ بروعته موثَقُ

Redeem you - and how can it, if it redeems you

Unfettered in its magnificence, secured

تَكنَّفُه مانعاتُ البلا

د وهو على أمنها يَفرَقُ

It is shielded by the land’s barriers

And upon their safety it wanders

يخال سيوفَك يخطفنهُ

ومن دونه البابُ والخندقُ

It imagines your swords seize it

While the door and moat are beyond it

ويعلم أنّ القنا في يديك

يراه على البعد أو يرمُقُ

And it knows the spear is in your hands

From afar it glimpses or perceives

وكيف تحيلُ خفايا الشخوص

على أسمرٍ لحظُهُ أزرقُ

And how can you disguise the secrets of characters

To one whose blue glance is brown

تسمَّعْ لها تستخفّ الحلي

مَ منها الطلاوةُ والرونقُ

Listen to them - be amused by the charming

Sweetness, glamour and elegance therein

وِهادُ الكلامِ وأجبالُه

طريقٌ بحافرها يُطرقُ

Guides of speech and its mountains

A path its hooves tread

نوافثُ في عُقَد المانعين

فكلّ يبيسٍ بها مورقُ

Thunderbolts within the covenant of the preventers

So everything dry through it flourishes

سوائر بالعرض سيرَ النجوم

لها مغربٌ ولها مشرقُ

Necklaces with honor, pace of stars

For them a west and for them an east

دعاةٌ بحمدك في الخافقيْن

لها بك ألويةٌ تخفقُ

Callers with your praise in both horizons

For them, standards wave through you

لك السكبُ من سُحبها والعهاد

وعند العدا الحصَبُ المصعِقُ

The downpour is yours from its clouds, and the thunderbolt

And near the enemy, the resounding hail

يكيس بها والدٌ منجبٌ

إذا وَلَدَ الشاعرُ المحمِقُ

It elates a distinguished father

When the foolish poet is born

بقيت وقد فنِيَ القائلون

عليها وما حَزَني لو بقُوا

They remain though the speakers perished

And I wouldn't be sad if they remained

تُذكِّركم فِيَّ حفظَ العهود

وإن لم يضع عندكم مَوثِقُ

Reminding you of keeping promises

Even if no pact was placed with you

تحاشيكُمُ أن أُرَى ظامئاً

أحوم وواديكُمُ مُتأقُ

Your avoidance, lest I be seen thirsty

Hovering while your valley pours

ويوحشها أنَّ ربعي على

تجدُّد دولتكم مُخلِقُ

And its loneliness that my quarter

Does not renew through your eternal rule

وأني بمضيعةٍ مثلُكم

على الفضل من مثلها يُشفِقُ

And that I own a decline like yours

To favor from its like I'm compassionate

ترى الناسَ لم يُسلفوا مثل ما

لها وهي تهبِط قد حلَّقوا

You see people did not loan its like

As it plummets they took wing

وفي الحقّ والحكَمُ العَدْلُ أنت

إذا لحقوا أنها تَلحقُ

And in truth and just rule you are

If they catch up, it will catch up

أمنتُ عليك صروفَ الزمانِ

وأخطأك القدَرُ الموبقُ

I entrusted you with time's caprice

Yet fate, destructive, missed you

ودارت لك السبعة الجارياتُ

بما تستحبُّ وتستوفقُ

And the seven planets revolved for you

However you prefer and choose

وعُدَّ أُلوفاً لك المهرجان

يُجدُّ السنين كما يُخلقُ

And thousands were counted for you - the celebrations

Time renews as it creates

يزورك مسترفداً سائلاً

فيغمره سيبُك المغدِقُ

To visit you, seeking drink, requesting

So your pouring rain immerses him

ويُذهله وجهُك المستنيرُ

عليه ومجلسُك المونِقُ

And your glowing face stuns him

Over it, and your brilliant gathering
