1. طاف عليه بالرقمتيْنِ

    طيفٌ على النأي من لُبيْنِ

    He passed by me with his two eyelids

    A phantom far from the beloved's abode

  2. خاطَرَ لم يدرِ أين جاب ال

    سرى ولم يشكُ مسَّ أينِ

    A thought that knew not whence it came

    Whether from left or right I know not whence

  3. بين زرود إلى أبان

    يا شُقّة البعدِ بين ذينِ

    Between Zarud and Aban

    O misery of this distance between us

  4. زار وخيطُ الكرى ضعيفٌ

    لم يتشبَّثْ بالمقلتينِ

    The thread of fate is weak

    It clung not to my eyelids

  5. والركبُ خدٌّ من بعد زندٍ

    وكاهلٌ فوق مِرفقينِ

    While the caravan afar from Zand

    Its shoulders above two elbows

  6. صرعَى يُصيب الرقادُ منهم

    تهويمةً بين ليلتينِ

    Overcome by slumber some fall

    Delirious between two nights

  7. كأنَّ ساقي النعاس عاطَى

    عيونَهم بنتَ رأس عينِ

    As if the cupbearer of sleep proffered

    Their eyes a drink from the head of the spring

  8. فلم يرعني إلا وشاحٌ

    طوَّق حِضنيَّ من بُدينِ

    None pitied me save a cheek

    That embraced my bosom of the two of us

  9. وضمةٌ بدَّلَتْ مهادا

    خشونةَ الأرض لي بلَينِ

    And an embrace that made

    The roughness of the earth soft for me

  10. جدَّد منا وقال خيرا

    سَرَّ وإن قال قولَ مينِ

    He renewed our covenant and said good

    Pleased though he spoke with hate

  11. ثم أطار الدجى فطارت

    به جناحا غرابِ بينِ

    Then the darkness took wing as did

    With it the wings of separation's raven

  12. زار لأحيا وحان صبحٌ

    صيّره زائرا لحيْني

    He came to bid farewell and morn arrived

    Making him a visitor for a while

  13. يا راكبا والنخيل منه

    مظِنَّةٌ بعد شَدّتينِ

    O rider, of the palms ahead

    A haven after two deserts

  14. اِحمل سلامي إلى أبان

    فاحططه عنّي بالبانتينِ

    Bear my greeting to Aban

    Land it from me by the two doors

  15. وحيِّ واسألهما حفيّاً

    عن ظبيةٍ أُمِّ جؤذرينِ

    And whisper, ask them gently

    About a gazelle, mother of two fawns

  16. تَنسُب قحطانَ من أبيها

    وأمّها في الذؤابتينِ

    Traced to Qahtan through her father

    While through her mother to The Two Brilliances

  17. فالحسن من أجلها يمانٍ

    ينمي إلى بيت ذي رُعَينِ

    For her beauty Yemen

    Inclines to the house with two meadows

  18. وقل لقومي من آل كسرى

    على تنافي القبيلتينِ

    And say to my people of Kisra's clan

    Despite the enmity of two tribes

  19. ولادتي بينكم وقلبي

    في يعرُبٍ فاعجبوا لذينِ

    My birth is among you but my heart

    Is in Yarub - marvel at that

  20. هان دم لي يعزّ فيكم

    يا لِعزيز المرام هَيْنِ

    My blood is cheap to you

    O shame for my noble goal

  21. لا تطلبوا الثأر عند غيري

    فإنّ قلبي قتيلُ عيني

    Do not seek vengeance with others

    For my heart is slain by my eyes

  22. لام على عفتي حريصٌ

    والحرصُ إحدى الشقاوتينِ

    The chaste blamed my passion

    Though passion is one of two evils

  23. فظنّ ماء الحياة عِدْلاً

    لسفك ماءٍ في الوجنتينِ

    He thought the water of life justice

    To spill the water of my cheeks

  24. قلتُ تَنَفَّجْ وكِد ذليلا

    يا رُبَّ عِرضٍ في ماضغينِ

    I said, "Relent, wretch,

    O Lord of the cheek bitten in rage"

  25. أقسمتُ بالمُحرِمين شُعْثا

    بين المصلَّى والمأزِمينِ

    I swore by the disheveled pilgrims

    Between mosque and place of ritual

  26. وما أحَلّوا وما أهَلّوا

    بحِجّةٍ بعد عُمرتينِ

    By their sacrosanct state, not profane

    After two consecrations

  27. لا قاد ذلُّ الأطماع رأسي

    ما دام لي ذو الرياستينِ

    No base greed ever swayed my resolve

    While the Lord of Heaven favors me

  28. أذَمَّ لي أن يذالَ وجهي

    أغلبُ منه ذو لِبدتينِ

    May abasement torment my face

    I most abhor that shame

  29. غيرانُ جاورتُهُ فبيتي

    في الأرض بيتٌ في الفرقدينِ

    Anger dwelt with me so my abode

    Became on earth a cloven house

  30. زحمتُ دهري به فأمسي

    جنبِيَ أقوى العريكتينِ

    I crowded my days with him so I spent

    My night next to the strongest partition

  31. وبات عزي منه ونصري

    في عامل الذابل الرُّدَيني

    And my glory and victory through him

    Became in the changing world decayed

  32. أبيضُ من طينةِ خلاصٍ

    ما شابها خالطٌ بشينِ

    White of pure clay

    Unmixed with any disgrace

  33. لملمها المجدُ وهي منه

    تبرقُ ما بين الراحتينِ

    Glory moulded it and it shone

    Between tranquility and fervor

  34. ناولها خالَها أبوها

    بيضاءَ ملساءَ الجانبينِ

    His uncle gave it to him

    White, smooth of sides

  35. ينبيك من في الزمان منها

    عن حَسبَيْها المقدَّميْنِ

    All who live will weep for it

    For the excellence of its ancestors

  36. دوحةُ مجدٍ لها ثمارٌ

    حظُّ فمٍ ما اشتهى وعينِ

    A glory palm with fruits

    What the mouth desired and the eye

  37. بِهبةِ الله يستدلّ ال

    روَّادُ منها على الحسينِ

    By God's gift the ascetics infer

    Through it the House of Hussein

  38. عالِ بكفَّيْ أبي المعالي

    ذِروة ثهلانَ أو حُنينِ

    Exalted, raise your two holy hands

    The peak of Thuhlan or Hunein

  39. واستسق خِلْفَيْهما وأهوِنْ

    إذا استهلّا بالمرِزمَينِ

    And seek rain behind them and deem slight

    When they commence with wailing

  40. ففيهما ديمتا سماح

    عصراهما غير زائلينِ

    For in them a lasting generosity

    Whose era ends not

  41. تُمطِر حُمراً لنا وبيضا

    حياً من التبرِ واللجينِ

    They pour on us red and white

    A torrent of hail and thick mud

  42. أناملٌ كلُّهنَّ غصنٌ

    روضتُه بين إصبعينِ

    Each finger a branch

    I tended in the hollow of two fingers

  43. أروعُ سلَّ الإقبالُ منه

    عَضبا طريرا لصفحتين

    The finest drink of fortune from it

    A lively, warbling rivulet to my palms

  44. إذا مضى في وغىً وشُورَى

    نزا فقدَّ الضريبتينِ

    When it raced wildly in fervor

    It lost both stirrups

  45. من صيغة الله لم يُثَلَّم

    ولم يُذِله طِراقُ قينِ

    Too short to be long-strided

    Nor did any guide on it

  46. ناهزَ حلمَ الكهول طفلا

    وساد بين التميمتينِ

    Discern plain or marsh

    Had I sent word of it on my steed

  47. فكان في مهده وقارا

    كأنه في الوسادتين

    It would have reached in an hour or two

    And say to Na'a my heart inclines to him

  48. يا فارس المشرِف المعالي

    كجدولٍ بين أشْبتينِ

    A spark between two embers

    No glories were donned after you

  49. صاغ لك الأفقَ ذاتَ طوقٍ

    هلالها بين كوكبينِ

    Adorned with ornament

    Nor did we know among them subtleties

  50. يمدُّ في سبقه بعرقٍ

    سرى إليه من سابقينِ

    Of lam, laam or ain

    You were its father before it was called

  51. يَصرِف عن لاحقٍ أبيه

    وجها إلى خاله الغُضينِ

    By that name and before namers

    Begotten from you, not through a mother

  52. ذلّت له الأرض لم تذلَّلْ

    من قبله تحت حافرينِ

    While people are of two parents

    Baghdad's face was ashen

  53. أربعةٌ في الثرى وقوعٌ

    ما بين نَسرين طائرينِ

    Shut between two eyebrows

    You left and joy left it

  54. يا سِربِهِ الجزعَ من دُجيلٍ

    حديقةً بين جنتينِ

    Its heart between two absent ones

    At night your hosts departed

  55. مسافة لا يطول فيها

    مدىً على ذي قصيرتينِ

    At dawn with wagons

    We spend our evenings and mornings

  56. ولا يراعِي بها دليلٌ

    صوبَ سِماكٍ ولا بُطينِ

    Groping between two darknesses

    Return to bring life to its flank

  57. لو رمتُ إبلاغَها بسوْقي

    بلغتُها كَلَّ ساعتينِ

    Tigris flowing through it and its banks

    Yearn for a realm you made prosper

  58. وقل لناءٍ قلبي إليه

    شرارةٌ بين جمرتينِ

    With a yearning of two pining

    He erred and you strayed so regret pierced him

  59. ما كُسيتْ بعدك المعالي

    فخرا ولا حُلِّيتْ بزينِ

    Between remorse and tears

    He repented and the slanderer repented

  60. ولا عُرِفنا منها لياءٍ

    ولا للامٍ ولا لعينِ

    Forgiveness between two repentances

    And look back at others than you

  61. كنتَ أباها من قبل تُكنَى

    بها وقبل المُكَنِّيينِ

    Alive tomorrow between two dead

    And outcast, missing his cup

  62. مولودةٌ منك لا بأمٍّ

    والخلق ما بين والدينِ

    Eating his hands in rage

    Protection from God is in your glory

  63. ووجهُ بغدادَ مقشعِرٌّ

    مقفل ما بينَ الحاجبينِ

    Bound with a two-ply rope

    It will enrich the harvest of his might

  64. غبتم وغاب السرور عنها

    فقلبها بين غائبينِ

    Praise to the Lord of the two favors

    Tomorrow I will come for my dues in you

  65. بانت مجاليكُمُ مساءً

    عنها وصبحا بالنيِّرينِ

    Cash, and time will repay my debt

    Each day for poetry in you

  66. فنحن نمسي فيها ونضحى

    نخبط ما بين ظلمتينِ

    Is a purpose between two deterrents

    It flows though none accused it of heresy

  67. فراجعوها ذكرَى لجنبَيْ

    دجلةَ فيها والشاطئينِ

    Nor demanded two witnesses

    Loyal to its promise to me

  68. واحنوا لمُلكٍ عودتموه

    حنوَّ بَرَّيْن حانيينِ

    A miracle in two proofs

    My praises marched among you

  69. زال وزُلتم فقد عرته

    ندامةٌ بين العِبرتينِ

    Their banners fluttering between the horizons

    For you are my openings and my seal

  70. تاب وتاب الواشي إليه

    والعفوُ ما بين توبتينِ

    With the people after between

    My showers rain on you unseen

  71. والتفِتوا تنظروا عداكم

    حيّاً غدا بين مِيتتينِ

    Near, between you and me

    My rain and verse in praise of you

  72. وشاردا فاته مناه

    يأكل غيظا لحم اليدينِ

    Pour forth, deterrents notwithstanding

    I refused to carry on my back, proudly,

  73. عادٌ من الله في علاكم

    نيطت بحبلٍ ذي مِرَّتينِ

    Any but you twain for support

    I care not how the nights alternate

  74. يغنَى بها محصدا قواها

    حمدا لربّ العنايتينِ

    While you are between them and me

  75. غداً يُقَضَّى إليَّ فيكم

    نقدا ويقضِي الزمانُ ديني

  76. فكلّ يوم للشعر فيكم

    عائفةٌ بين زاجرينِ

  77. تجري ولم تُتَّهم بدعوى

    ولم تطالَب بشاهدينِ

  78. صادقةَ الوعد لي عليها

    معجزةٌ بالدلالتينِ

  79. سيرَّتُ فيكم راياتِ مدحٍ

    تخفُقُ عني في الخافقينِ

  80. لكم فتوحي بها وختمي

    والناس من بعدُ بينَ بينِ

  81. تغشاكمُ غُيّبا شهودا

    على دنوّ منكم وبينِ

  82. يحوب مُطري قوم وشعري

    في مدحكم ذو الشهادتينِ

  83. منعتُ ظهري بِكم فخورا

    بجانبيّ المُحصَّنينِ

  84. فما أبالي صَرفَ الليالي

    وأنتُمُ بينها وبيني
