1. إذا فُطمتْ قَرارهُ كلِّ وادي

    فدَرَّتْ باللوى حَلَمُ الغوادي

    If the decision of every valley was weaned,

    The dreams of the valleys would flow with agony.

  2. ومرّت تهتدي بالريح فيه

    مطايا الغيثِ مثقَلةَ الهوادي

    And the rain clouds would pass being guided by the wind in it,

    The mounts of rain heavily laden with valleys.

  3. ففُتَّحت الرُّبا خدّاً وسُدَّت

    بشكر المزن أفواهُ الوهادِ

    So the pastures smiled with cheeks and were blocked

    With the sweetness of eglantine the mouths of the lowlands

  4. أناديه وتَنشُدُه المغاني

    ولكن لا حياةَ لمن تُنادي

    I call him, and the melodies chant to him,

    But there is no life for the one you call.

  5. وما أرَبِي إلى سُقيا ربوعٍ

    لها من مقلتي سارٍ وغادي

    And I do not want to water meadows

    That have from my eyelashes going and returning.

  6. حملتُ يدَ السحاب الجَوْن فيها

    ولست معوَّداً حملَ الأيادي

    I carried the hand of clouds pregnant with it

    And I'm not used to carrying hands.

  7. ولو بكت السماءُ لها وجفني

    تيقَّنَتِ البخيلَ من الجوادِ

    And if the sky cried for it and my eyelids dried up,

    The stingy would be certain of the generous.

  8. ضَممتُ بمَسْقَطِ العَلَمينْ صحبي

    وقد صاح الكَلالُ بهم بَدادِ

    I gathered my friends in the place of the two flags,

    While exhaustion called them in Baghdad.

  9. على أرَجِ الثرى لما ضَللنا

    تضوَّعَ منه في الأنفاس هادي

    When we went astray on the carpet of soil,

    A guide breathed from it into the breaths.

  10. وقد سقط السُّرى والنجم هاوٍ

    عيون الركب في حطّ الرقادِ

    The Pleiades have fallen and the stars are confused,

    The eyes of the caravan at the end of the slumber.

  11. نَدامَى صبوةٍ دارتْ عليهم

    بأيدي العيس أكوابُ السهادِ

    The remorse of youth turned to them

    With the hands of time the cups of forgetfulness.

  12. إذا شربوا السُّرى اقترحوا عليه

    صفيرَ حمامةٍ وغِناءَ حادِي

    When they drank nectar, they suggested to it

    The cooing of a dove and the singing of a guide.

  13. ولما عزَّ ماءُ الرَّكب فيهم

    وقفتُ أَحُلُّ من عيني مَزادي

    And when the water of the caravan was scarce among them,

    I stood solving from my eyes my provision.

  14. تحوم وقد تقلّصتِ الأداوَي

    على أجفانِيَ الأبلُ الصوادي

    It hovered while the remedies shrank

    On my eyelids, the injustice of the black nights.

  15. أجدَّك هل ترى بذيول سلمى

    نَضارةَ حاضرٍ وخِيامَ بادِي

    Do you see with the tails of Salma

    The bloom of the present and the vanishing tents?

  16. خرقن لكلَّ عينٍ في سواد ال

    خدور خَصاصةً مثلَ السوادِ

    They tore for every black-eyed gazelle

    Cheeks like the blackness of blackness.

  17. وما أتبعتُ ظُعْنَ الحيِّ طرفي

    لأغنمَ نظرةً فتكونَ زادي

    And I did not follow the bends of the living with my eyes

    To gain a look so it would be my provision.

  18. ولكنّي بعثتُ بلحظ عيني

    واءَ الركب يسألُ عن فؤادي

    But I sent with a glance of my eye

    The pain of the caravan asking about my heart.

  19. وفي نُوامِ هذا الليل شمسٌ

    وَفَى سهري لها وجَفَا وسادي

    And in the sleep of this night there is a sun

    That stayed up my vigil and sufficed my pillow and mattress.

  20. إذا ذُكرتْ نزتْ كبدي إليها

    هبوبَ الداء نُبِّهَ بالعِدادِ

    When it was mentioned, my liver swooped down to it

    Like the onset of disease awakened by counting.

  21. عجبتُ يَضيمني زمني وأرضَى

    ويحصُدني ولم أبلغْ حَصادي

    I wondered, my time oppresses me and I am pleased,

    And it reaps me before I reach harvest.

  22. وتُنفِقُ مسرفاتٍ من شبابي

    لياليهِ الصعابُ بلا اقتصادِ

    And it spends wastefully from my youth

    Its nights without thrift.

  23. وعهدي بالتشابُهِ والتنافي

    يجرَّان التصادقَ والتَّعادي

    And my pact with resemblance and difference

    Drags friendship and enmity.

  24. فما بالُ الليالي وهي سُودٌ

    يُزالُ بها البياضُ من السوادِ

    So why are the nights, which are black,

    Removing whiteness from blackness?

  25. توقَّ الناس إن الداءَ يُعدى

    وإن قربُوا فحظُّك في البِعادِ

    People avoid that disease is contagious,

    And if they drew near, your share is in remoteness.

  26. ولا يغررْك ذو مَلَقٍ يغطِّي

    أذاه وجمرُهُ تحتَ الرَّمادِ

    And do not be fooled by a flatterer who covers

    His harm while his embers are under the ashes.

  27. كِلا أخويك ذو رَحِمٍ ولكن

    أخوك أخوك في النُّوبِ الشِّدادِ

    No, your brother of womb but

    Your brother, your brother in violent adversities.

  28. عذيريَ من صديقِ الوجهِ يَحني

    أضالعَه على قَلبٍ مُضادِي

    My excuse from a friend whose cheek inclines,

    Ribs over a heart opposing me.

  29. لوى يدَه على حَبلٍ لعُنْقي

    وقال اضمُمْ يديك على ودادي

    He bent his hand over a rope for my neck

    And said: Clasp your hands in my friendship!

  30. تمنَّى وهو يَنْقُصُني تمامي

    وأينَ الزِّبْرِقانُ من الدآدي

    He wished, while decreasing my completeness,

    And where are the two luminous starts from the black starling?

  31. ومجتمعين يرتفدون عيبي

    فلا يَزِنُ اجتماعُهم انفرادي

    And gathered disparaging my fault,

    So their gathering does not weigh against my solitude.

  32. إذا انتسبوا لفضلٍ لم يزيدوا

    على نسبِ ابن حرب من زِيادِ

    When they attributed themselves to a merit, they did not increase

    Beyond the attribution of Ibn Harb from Ziyad.

  33. أُلامُ على عُزوف النفسِ ظلماً

    وما لومي على خُلُقي وعادي

    I blame the alienation of the soul unjustly

    And I do not blame my manners and habit.

  34. ويخدعني البخيلُ يريد ذمّي

    وهل عند الهشيمة من مَررادِ

    And the stingy deceives me, wanting to blame me,

    And is there any wish with the inflamed ashes?

  35. كفاني آلُ إسماعيلَ إني

    بلغتُ بهم من الدنيا مُرادي

    Enough for me, the family of Ismail indeed,

    I have reached with them from the world my purpose.

  36. وأنّ محمداً دارَى نفاري

    فلانَ له وأسلسَ من قيادي

    And that Muhammad embraced my hatred,

    So for him is the softening of my leading.

  37. رقَى خُلقُي بأخلاقٍ كرامٍ

    ألانت من عرائكه الشِّدادِ

    My manners have ascended with noble manners

    That softened from its ruggedness the rugged.

  38. وكنتُ أذمُّ شرَّ الناس قِدْماً

    وعيبَهُمُ فصحّ على انتقادي

    And I used to blame the evil of the people before,

    And their faults openly exposed to my criticism.

  39. وكم خابطتُ عشواءَ الأماني

    وكاذَبني على الظنّ ارتيادي

    And how I disputed the folly of wishes

    And it lied to me about assumption my habit.

  40. فلمّا أن سللتُ على الدياجي

    ربيبَ النعمة استذكَى زِنادي

    So when I sneaked upon the night stars,

    The groom of blessing reminded my flints.

  41. وأَنبضَ من يديه لي غديراً

    وقد أعيا فمي مَصُّ الثِّمادِ

    And a stream gushed from his hands to me,

    And my mouth had weakened from sucking the bandage.

  42. جلا لي غُرّةً رَوِيتْ جمالاً

    أُسرُّ بها ووجهُ البدرِ صادي

    It revealed to me a cheek I was quenched with beauty

    I am secretly pleased with, and the full moon is repelling.

  43. تفاديها السماءُ بنيِّريْها

    فَتعرِفُ حظَّها فيما تُفادي

    The sky avoids it, brightening it,

    So it knows its share in what it avoids.

  44. من الوافين أحلاماً وصبرا

    إذا الجُلَّى هفت بحلومِ عادِ

    Of the loyal, dreams and patience,

    When the cheeks blew with the dreams of the return.

  45. بني البيض الخفافِ توارثوها

    مع الأحساب والخيل الوِرادِ

    The sons of the kind whites inherited it

    With pedigrees and smooth-stepping horses.

  46. تَضاحَكُ في أكفّهم العطايا

    وتكلحُ عنهُمُ يوم الجلادِ

    The gifts laugh in their palms

    And grin at them on the day of the scourge.

  47. مطاعيمٌ إذا النكباءُ قَرَّت

    وجَبَّ القحطُ أسنمةَ البلادِ

    Grafts, when disasters approach,

    And famine spreads in the provinces.

  48. لهم أيدٍ إذا سُئلوا سِباطٌ

    مَوصَّلةٌ بأسيافٍ جِعادِ

    They have hands, if asked, swift

    Connected to swords unsheathed.

  49. إذا كلَّت من الضَّرب المواضي

    أعانوها بأفئدةٍ حِدادِ

    If the basins tired of beating,

    They aided them with hearts of smiths.

  50. طَووا سلفَ الفخارِ فلم تُوَصَّمْ

    طوارِفُهم بمعروفِ التلادِ

    They bent the ancestry of pottery, so its

    Edges were not cracked by the knowledge of experiences.

  51. إذا الأحسابُ طأطأتِ استشاطوا

    على متمرّد الشُرفاتِ عادي

    When the pedigrees bowed down, they raged

    Against the one rebelling on the balconies, transgressing.

  52. يَعُدُّ المجدُ واحدَهم بألفٍ

    من النجباء في قِيَم البلادِ

    Glory counts one of them as a thousand

    Of the elite in the valuations of the countries.

  53. إذا وَلدوا فتىً سعت المعالي

    تَباشَرُ بينها بالازديادِ

    When they birth a young man, the glories

    Hasten to exchange congratulations and increase.

  54. نموْك أغرَّ من ملكٍ أغرٍّ

    جواداً بالكرائم من جوادِ

    Your growth more miraculous than a miraculous kingdom,

    Generous with bounties from the generous.

  55. أخا طضعمينْ حُلْوُك للمُوالي

    بلا منٍّ ومُرُّك للمعادي

    A affectionate brother, your sweetness to the loyal

    Without conferring, and your bitterness to the enemy.

  56. إذا لم يختضِبْ لك غربُ سيفٍ

    دماً خضَّبتَ سيفاً بالمِدادِ

    If the west of a sword is not dyed

    With blood, you dye a sword with ink.

  57. فأنتَ إذا ركبتَ شهابُ حربٍ

    وأنت إذا جلست شهابُ نادي

    So you, when you ride the flame of war,

    And you, when you sit, the flame of the assembly.

  58. إذا رجع الحسيبُ إلى فخارٍ

    قديم أو حديثٍ مستفادِ

    When the nobleman returns to folklore,

    Ancient or modern, derived.

  59. فحسبك بالموفَّق من فخارٍ

    وبيتِ الباهليّةِ من عَتادِ

    It suffices you the successful from folklore,

    And the house of pre-Islamic from equipment.

  60. ومن يُسنِدْ إلى طرفيك مجداً

    يَبِتْ من جانبيه في مِهادِ

    And whoever lends glory to your side,

    Spends the night from its sides in a cradle.

  61. فِداؤك داثرُ الأبيات يأوي

    إلى وقصاءَ لاطئةِ العمادِ

    Your ransom is the composer of verses who takes refuge

    To the desolate places of the pillar of the pillar of the supports.

  62. يتوبُ إذا هفا غَلَطاً بجودٍ

    ولم يتُب اتقاءً للمَعادِ

    He repents when he errs with generosity,

    And did not repent in fear of the return.

  63. إذا جاراك في مِضمارِ فضلٍ

    عَدَتْه عن اللحاق بك العوادي

    When your peers race you in the racetrack of merit,

    The plains turn them back from catching up to you.

  64. إليك سَرَتْ مطامعُنا فعادت

    مَواقرَ من ندىً لك مستعادِ

    Towards you our hopes went and returned

    As requests from dew belonging to you regained.

  65. يَخِدْنَ فصائلاً فيدعنَ وَسْماً

    لأرجُلهنّ في الصُّمِّ الصِّلادِ

    It jokes, so it imprints marks on their legs in the silent stillness,

    As if we had pulled them, the intimate talks from the flint.

  66. يقادحْنَ الحَصَى شَرراً كأنّا

    حذوناها مَناسمَ من زِنادِ

    They carried to you of the wonders of rhymes

    Strange things from intestines or humps.

  67. حَملن إليك من تحف القوافي

    غرائبَ من مثانٍ أو وُحادِ

    Gifts the ears pride in,

    Over sights in the days of gift exchanges.

  68. هدايا تفخر الأسماعُ فيها

    على الأبصار أيّامَ التهادي

    Refined from the words the meanings

    By the length of ability and the repetition of meanings.

  69. مخلَّصةً من الكلم المعنَّى

    بطول الكرِّ والمعنى المُعادِ

    Pieces tied in the necklaces of magic grown,

    So their eloquence reaches to the sand of stringers.

  70. نوافثَ في عقود السحر تُنمَى

    فصاحتُها إلى رملِ العِقادِ

    It wished, while it is compiled in you, if only

    It would be woven straps, the loves of enemies.

  71. تمنَّى وهي تُنْظَمُ فيك أن لو

    تكونُ ترائباً مهجُ الأعادي

    The Arabs think incapacity from its extent,

    The articulacy of the Arabs did not speak with 啊.

  72. تُخالُ العربُ عجزاً عن مداها

    نبيطَ العُربِ لم تنطِقْ بضادِ

    For the days of good news and congratulations,

    With it the spreading of scents and valleys.

  73. لأيّام البشائر والتهاني

    بها نشرُ الروائح والغوادي

    A noble day trails its train,

    And makes it on a feast, returned.

  74. يجرِّرُ ذيلَها يومٌ شريفٌ

    فيجعلها على عيدٍ مُعادِ

    Witnesses that your grandfather is ascending unwaveringly

    Glory and that your life is in extension.

  75. شواهدَ أن جدّك في ارتقاء ال

    سعود وأنّ عمرَك في امتدادِ

    It suffices it from you, your gracious forgiveness in abundant giving,

    And it has exerted itself for you with my efforts.

  76. كفاها منك عفوُك في العطاء ال

    جزيل وقد وفَتْ لك باجتهادي

    So how did you mix me with the likes of me in what

    You attained while you testify to my uniqueness?

  77. فكيف خَلْطَتني بسواي فيم

    أنلتَ وأنت تَشهدُ باتحادي

    Your harshness toward me went too far, then association came

    More rational than extremism.

  78. تمادَى بي جفاؤك ثم جاءت

    مواصَلةٌ أعقُّ من التمادي

    Were you not like refined gold to me

    A white hand shining among hands?

  79. ألم تك لي من الذَّهَب المصفَّى

    يدٌ بيضاءُ تُشرِقُ في الأيادي

    Flourishing if it spreads with my mention

    And worthy of your glory and my belief.

  80. منوِّهةٌ إذا انتشرتْ بذكرِي

    ولائقةٌ بمجدكِ واعتقادي

    My approval is for the breeze of longing to shake you

    To my proximity and your home to miss me.

  81. رضائي أن تهزَّك ريحُ شوقٍ

    إلى قرْبِي ويوحشك افتقادي

    If it is not a noble attainment,

    It suffices me from your connection in amity.

  82. إذا ما لم يكن نيلاً شريفاً

    فحسبي من صِلاتك بالودادِ
