1. أما وهواها عِذْرَةً وتَنصُّلا

    لقد نقل الواشي إليها فأمحلا

    Though she sought excuses and evasions

    The tale-bearer relayed to her, so she rebuffed me

  2. سعى جهدَه لكن تجاوز حدَّه

    وكثَّر فارتابت ولو شاء قلَّلا

    He exerted himself but exceeded the limit

    And multiplied, so she doubted though he willed brevity

  3. وقال فلم تقبلْ ولكن تلوَّمَتَ

    على أنه ما قال إلا لتقْبلا

    And said, yet she did not accept, but rather blamed

    That he only said it so she would accept

  4. وطارحها أنِّي سلوتُ فهل رأى

    له الذمُّ مثلي عن هوَى مثلِها سلا

    And cast it off saying I asked, so did he see

    For him blame like mine for love like hers, tranquility?

  5. أأنفُض طوعاً حبَّها عن جوانحي

    وإن كان حبّاً للجوانح مُثقِلا

    Shall I willingly cast off her love from my heart

    Though if it's love, it's heavy on hearts

  6. أبى اللهُ والقلبُ الوفيّ بعهدهِ

    وإلفٌ إذا عُدَّ الهوى كان أوّلا

    God refused and the loyal heart in its covenant

    And intimacy - if love is counted, it's first

  7. أيا صاحِبَيْ نجوايَ يومَ سويقةٍ

    أناةً وإن لم تُسعِدا فتجمَّلا

    Oh friends of my passion on the day of Soueiqah

    Be gentle, though you don't make happy, so be calm

  8. سلا ظبيةَ الوادي وما الظبيُ مثلُها

    وإن كان مصقولَ الترائب أكحلا

    Ask the gazelle of the valley, for none is like her

    Though the testifier of virtues be the most eloquent

  9. أأنتِ أمرتِ البدرَ أن يَصدَعَ الدُّجَى

    وعلَّمتِ غصنَ البان أن يتميَّلا

    Is it you who commanded the moon to split the darkness

    And taught the branch of acacia to sway

  10. وحرَّمتِ يومَ البين وقفةَ ساعةٍ

    على عاشقٍ ظنّ الوَداعَ محلَّلا

    And forbade on the day of separation a moment's pause

    For a lover who thought parting allowed

  11. جمعتِ عليه حرُقةَ الدمع والجوى

    وما اجتمع الداءان إلا ليقتلا

    You brought together the burning of tears and love-pain

    And the two only come together to kill

  12. هبي لِيَ عيني واحملي كُلْفةَ الأسى

    على القلب إنّ القلبَ أصبرُ للبلا

    Awaken my eye for me and carry the burden of sorrow

    On the heart - for the heart is most patient of tribulation

  13. أراكِ بوجهِ الشمس والبعدُ بيننا

    فأقنعُ تشبيهاً بها وتَمَثُّلا

    I see you with the face of the sun though we're distant

    So I'm content with its likeness and imagining

  14. وأذكرُ عذباً من رُضابكِ مُسكراً

    فما أشربُ الصهباءَ إلا تعلُّلا

    And I recall a sweet intoxication from your approval

    So I don't drink sahba except as an excuse

  15. هنيئا لحبّ المالكيّةِ إنه

    رخيصٌ له ما عزّ منيّ ما غلا

    Happy is love for the Malikiyyah - it

    Is cheap, whatever is dear to me is expensive to it

  16. تعلّقتُها غِرّاً وليداً وناشئاً

    وشِبْتُ وناشِى حبّها ما تكهَّلا

    I clung to it as a newborn babe and growing child

    And I grew old though love for it never grew old

  17. ووحدَّها في الحبّ قلبي فما له

    وإن وجدَ الأبدالَ أن يتبدَّلا

    And singled it out in love, so my heart never

    Even if peerless ones are found, changes

  18. رعى اللهُ قلبي ما أبرَّ بمن جفا

    وأصبرهَ في النائباتِ وأحملا

    May God shepherd my heart - it's not failed one who was unjust

    And make it patient in adversities and forbearing

  19. وكرَّمَ عهدي للصديق فإنه

    قليلٌ على الحالات أن يتحوَّلا

    And honor my loyalty to a friend, for it's

    Little, for states to change

  20. وليَّنَ أيّامِي عليَّ فإنني

    أزاحم ثهلاناً عليه ويَذبُلا

    And make my days easy on me, for I

    Contend with one who languishes, so I wither

  21. وأهل زمانٍ لا هَوَادةَ بينهم

    إذا استؤمنوا كانوا أخَبَّ وأختلا

    And people of a time with no affection between them

    When they feel secure, they are more cunning and cunning

  22. صديقُ نفاقٍ أو عدوُّ فضيلةٍ

    متى طُبّ عاد الداءُ أدهَى وأعضلا

    A hypocritical friend or virtuous enemy

    When disease is hidden, it becomes more maleficent and knotty

  23. وُلُوجٌ على الشرّ الذي يرصُدونه

    متى وجدوا يوماً إلى الشرّ مَدخَلا

    In ambush for the evil they plot

    When they find a path to evil, they slip

  24. إذا ما رأَوْا عند امرىءٍ زادَ يومِهِ

    مَشوا حَسَداً أو باتَ جَوعان مُرْمِلا

    If they see surplus wealth on a man one day

    They walk in envy, or spend the night starving and restless

  25. وفي الأرضِ عنهم مَذهبٌ وتفسُّحٌ

    فمن لِيَ لو أسطيعُ أن أترحَّلا

    And in the land, due to them, are way and recreation

    So for me - if I could journey and roam!

  26. أهُمُّ ولكن من ورائي جواذبٌ

    أخافُ على أعطانها أن تُشَلَّلا

    But behind me are powerful pulls

    I fear for its reins that they may be severed

  27. وتُعْلِقُني الآمالُ في قُلَلِ العُلا

    فأجعلُها منهم مَلاذاً ومَعقِلا

    And hopes suspend me in the heights of glory

    So I make them, from them, refuge and fortress

  28. نعمْ عند ركن الدين وابنِ قوامه

    غِنىً ومَرادٌ أن أُضَامَ وأُهمَلا

    Yes - in the pillar of religion and its champion

    Wealth, purpose - though I'm thin, I'm neglected

  29. وفي يدهِ البيضاءِ يقطُرُ ماؤها

    ربيعٌ يَرُدُّ الجدبَ أخضرَ مُبقِلا

    And in his white hand, its water drips

    A spring that turns aridity green, thriving

  30. وبالقصر من دار السلام متوَّجٌ

    بإشراقه أخزَى البدورَ وأَخجلا

    In the abode, from the Abode of Peace, crowned

    Eclipsing the houses with his shining light

  31. ترى خرزاتِ الملكِ فوق جبينه

    كواكبَ نورٍ ضوءُها يملأ الفلا

    You see the beads of rule on his brow

    Stars of light, radiance filling the horizon

  32. يُميت النفوسَ قاطباً متنمِّراً

    ويحيى أواناً باسماً متهلِّلا

    Bringing souls to death, masked,

    Then giving them life by a name curled in tresses

  33. إذا كفَروا النَّعماءَ شامَ سيوفَه

    وإن سألوا الإغضاء سَامَ التفضُّلا

    If they cover the blessing, his sword rises

    And if they ask for pardon, it kindly pardons

  34. قريبٌ إلى المولى بعيدٌ بعزّه

    على مَغْمَز الأعداء أن يتسهَّلا

    Near to the Protector, mighty in his might

    Too hard for the enemies' sneers to attempt ease

  35. إذا مَنَّ أعطَى حلمَه متبيِّناً

    وإن همَّ أعطَى أمرَه متعجِّلا

    If he favors, he gives his forbearance, clarifying

    And if he intends, he executes his command hastily

  36. حَوى حَوزةَ الدنيا فدبَّر أمرَها

    مليّاً بتقويم الأمور معدِّلا

    He grasped the forelock of the world and managed its affair

    Discerning, correcting the matters equilibrium

  37. أطاعتْه أعناقُ البلادِ وأقبلتْ

    إليه القلوبُ رغبةً لا تعمُّلا

    The necks of the lands obeyed him, and hearts

    Turned to him eagerly, not swerving

  38. ودانتْ له الأقدارُ حتى تصرَّفتْ

    على أمره الماضي صُعوداً ونُزَّلا

    And destinies submitted to him until they acted

    According to his order, rising or falling

  39. إذا طلبَ الأعداءَ أنفذ جَحفلاً

    لُهَاماً من الإقبال يَتْبَع جَحفلا

    If he sought the enemies, he unleashed hosts

    Wild for onslaught, host following host

  40. كفاه مكانَ السيفِ والرمحِ جَدُّهُ

    فلو شاء يوم الروعِ حاربَ أعزلا

    His status in place of sword and spear sufficed

    So had he wished one day for panic, he'd fight unarmed

  41. وكم عادةٍ لله في النصر عندَه

    تَضمَّن باستمرارها وتَكفَّلا

    And how much custom of victory with him

    Containing, in its continuity, undertaking

  42. ومن آيةٍ قامتْ بتثبيتِ مُلكه

    وقد كادت الأقدامُ أن تتزيَّلا

    And of signs that rose confirming his rule

    Though feet almost slipped

  43. ظهرتَ جلالَ الدولتين بفضلها

    ومُعجِزها حتى ظنناك مُرسَلا

    Your majesty of the two realms appeared through it

    And its miracle, until we thought you a messenger

  44. رأى اللهُ أنّ الأرضَ أصلحُ سيرةً

    عليك وأن الناسَ أجملُ محفِلا

    God saw the earth in its conduct was better

    With you, the people, a finer assembly

  45. وأنك تأوِي في أمورك كلِّها

    إليه مُنيباً نحوَه متبتِّلا

    And you house in your every affair

    Turning to Him in devotion, humbling yourself before Him

  46. فولَّاك في ضيق الشدائد فُرْجةً

    وأعطاك مَنْجىً في الخطوب وموئلا

    So He made you relief in the strait of woes

    And gave you refuge in perils, shelter

  47. وكم آبقٍ من رِقِّ مُلكك غامطٍ

    لنُعماك لم ينهضْ بما قد تحمَّلا

    How many an ingrate whose neck's captivity to your blessings

    That assumed them never rose to what he'd undertaken

  48. عفوتَ مِراراً عن تمادي ذنوبه

    فأنظرتَهُ بالعفو حتى توغَّلا

    You repeatedly forgave his transgressions

    Looking upon him with pardon until he trespassed

  49. وبالأمس لجُّوا في الشِّقاقِ وأجلبوا

    عليك وظنُّوها وحاشاك فَيْصَلا

    And yesterday they plunged into discord and roused

    Against you - impossibly! - separation

  50. فلم يَجنِ ضعفُ الرأي إلا عليهمُ

    ولا ازددتَ إلا قوّةً وتأثُّلا

    But the feebleness of opinion availed them naught

    While you only gained strength and roots

  51. فسائْل بهم إما طريداً مشرَّداً

    يلوذ بصفح أو قتيلاً مُجَدَّلا

    So ask about them - driven scattered refugees

    Seeking your sword's flat or slain, terrified

  52. فلا زال مَن عاداك أبعدَ شُقّةً

    وأخبَث أيّاماً وأخشنَ منزلا

    Never has one who opposed you been farther in wretchedness

    And more evil days and fouler lodging

  53. ولا زالت الراياتُ واسمُك حَلْيُها

    خوافقَ تحوِي الأرضَ سهلاً وأَجْبُلا

    Never have the banners and your name, their adornment

    Encircling earth, plain and hill, ceased

  54. إلى أن ترى بِيضَ الملوك وسُودَها

    قياماً على أُخرَى بساطك مُثَّلا

    Until you see the whites of kings and their blacks

    Standing, on the others, upon your carpet, paralyzed

  55. وبُلِّغتَ في نجميْك يا بدرُ كلَّ ما

    تؤمِّل في نجمٍ على أفُقٍ علا

    And you attained in your two stars - O full moon - all

    You hope for in a star rising on the horizon

  56. قديمُهما والطالعُ الآن قابساً

    ضياءَك حتى يستقيمَ ويكمُلا

    The old and presently aligned, your light grasping

    Until upright and perfected

  57. فكانا على الأعداءِ سيفَيْ تناصُرٍ

    شبيهَك فيما أحدثا وتقيَّلا

    For they were on the enemies two curving swords

    Your likeness in what they innovated and responded

  58. وشدَّاك والضِّرغامُ أمنعُ جانباً

    وأنهضُ إقداماً إذا كان مُشبِلا

    And reinforced you - the squadron firmer in its flank

    And loftier in feet if stirring for combat

  59. وكُثِّرتَ بالأولادِ تُرهِف مُنصُلاً

    طريراً إلى الدنيا وتَطبعُ مُنصُلا

    And multiplied through sons who sniff the breeze

    Dainty, roaming the world and printing in the world

  60. فإنك من قومٍ ثوَى المُلكُ فيهمُ

    فلم ينوِ من بعد الحُلولِ ترحُّلا

    For you are of a people kingship dwelled among

    Then never shifted, after alighting, roaming

  61. أصولهُمُ منصورةٌ بفروعهم

    إذا قام منهم آخرٌ كان أوّلا

    Their roots are victorious in their branches

    If another of them rises, he is first

  62. لكم في رقابِ الناس أمراس ذمّةٍ

    بعيدٌ على استحصافها أن تُحلَّلا

    For you over people's necks are covenants

    Too difficult in examination to be dissolved

  63. مفاتيحُ هذا الرزقِ بين أكفِّهم

    ونصرةُ دِين الله بِيضاً وذُبَّلا

    In their palms the keys to this sustenance

    And the victory of God's religion, shining white, tattered

  64. فما يشهدون الحرب إلا إذا غَلَتْ

    ولا يشترون الحمدَ إلا إذا غلا

    For they don't witness war unless injustice increases

    Nor buy praise unless expensively

  65. أتعرف يا مولى الملوك كقِصِّةٍ

    بُلِيتُ بها بالأمس والحرُّ يُبتلَى

    Do you know, O King of Kings, like the tale

    I was tested with yesterday while the noble are tried

  66. أبعدَ قنوعي بالثمادِ تعفّفاً

    وهجرِيَ أبوابَ الملوك تعزُّلا

    My being content with provisions in thrift

    And forsaking the doors of kings in withdrawal

  67. وظُلميَ فضلي واهتضامي توحُّدي

    مخافةَ أن أُوذَى وأن أتَبَذَّلا

    And my excellence being oppressed and my uniqueness violated

    Fearing harm and degradation

  68. يُسيء رَعَاعُ الناس عندك سُمعتي

    ويُشعِر أنّي حزتُ مالاً مؤثَّلا

    The riffraff speak ill of me to you

    And suggest I've amassed concealed wealth

  69. ويُغرِي بإفقاري وأنت الذي ترى

    لمثلِيَ أن يغنىَ وأن يتموَّلا

    And provoke regarding my poverty - and you are the one who sees

    That the like of me ought to be rich and endowed

  70. ولكنَّها ما غيَّرتْ لك شيمةً

    كرُمتَ بها إلا قليلاً كَلاَ وَلا

    But it never changed a quality of your nobility

    You were honored with which, except little, no and no

  71. ولما سعَى الساعي فجاءك كاذباً

    عليَّ بجَوْرٍ كنتَ أعلَى وأعدلا

    And when the talebearer strove and came to you lying

    About me wrongfully - you were loftier and more just

  72. أتاك بزورٍ فاتحاً فمَهُ به

    فألقمته بالردِّ تُرْباً وجَنْدلا

    He came to you with lies, opening his mouth with them

    So you filled his mouth with rebuttal - shame and disgrace

  73. تسرَّع فيها جالباً لك إثمَها

    ولكن أراك الحقُّ أن تتمهَّلا

    He rushed it, bringing its sin upon you

    But I see you are Truth, so be patient

  74. فلم تألُني كشفاً لصدقِ براءتي

    ولا نظراً في قصّتي وتأمُّلا

    Yet you did not gentle me, revealing my innocence

    Nor examine my story and ponder

  75. وزَنْتَ بذكر المالِ مجدَك في العلا

    فكان وِزانُ المجد عندك أثقلا

    And weighed with mention of money your glory in the height

    So the weighing of glory to you was heavier

  76. وحكَّمتَ رأياً طاهريّاً وهمَّةً

    بُوَيْهِيَّةً ما طَبَّقَتْ كان مَفصِلا

    And judged an opinion - pure, inspired

    When applied, never unequaled, well-executed

  77. فأرضاك منّي الصدقُ لما علمتَه

    ببيّنةٍ لم استعِرْها تقَوُّلا

    So truth from me made you content when you knew it

    With clear proof, I did not argue or contend over it

  78. فإن فاجأتني همّةٌ من طروقها

    تروَّع منها جانبي وتوجَّلا

    Then if a whim from its ways alarmed me

    Shaking my side, I'd be apprehensive

  79. حُبِستُ ولكن كان حبساً مشرِّفاً

    أناف بذكري واعتقالا مُجمِّلا

    I was detained, but it was an honoring detention

    Enobling my repute, a captivity beautifying

  80. ولم أر مثلي مستضافاً مكرَّماً

    ولا كاسباً للعزّ من حيث ذُلِّلا

    I've seen none hosted, honored like me

    Nor gaining glory from where he's been humbled

  81. لئن عَدَّ قومٌ نكبةً حبسَ ليلةٍ

    لقد كنتُ منكوباً من الناس مُقْبِلا

    If a people count the captivity of a night a setback

    Truly, I was set back from people, advancing

  82. وسبَّب لي هذا المُقامَ تروُّعي

    وقد كنتُ عنه ساهياً أو مغفَّلا

    And this stance was caused by my alarm

    Though I was heedless or negligent of it

  83. مكانٌ تمناه الكواكبُ عزَّةً

    فتبغي إليه مَهبَطاً وتنزُّلا

    A place the stars desire, esteeming,

    Seeking descent and alighting to it

  84. ومن لجبين الشمس لو خرّ ساجداً

    لأرضك أو وافى ثراك مقبِّلا

    And for the brow of the sun - if it slid worshipping

    Or came to your soil, kissing it

  85. لبست به ثوباً ضفا لِيَ فخرهُ

    بمدحك مجروراً عليّ مذيَّلا

    I'd wear it as a robe whose splendor

    In praise of you, trailing, adorns me

  86. سيعلم مَنْ جرَّ السعايةَ أنه

    بكرهي إلى ما ساق نفعي توصَّلا

    It will know - he who dragged defamation - that he

    Through hating me, attained what benefits me

  87. لقد غَرَس التعريضَ بي في وبيئةٍ

    متى اسْتُثْمِرَتْ أجنَتْه صاباً وحنظلا

    He planted by insinuation in me hot soil

    When cultivated, it produced exacting, deadly crops

  88. إذا وسَمتْ عِرضَ اللئيم بِميسَمٍ

    من الذمِّ باقٍ ودَّ لو كان أُغفِلا

    When the villain is branded with a brand

    Of blame remaining even if forgotten

  89. فكان شقيّاً خاب عندك سعيُه

    وفزتُ وكنتَ المنعمَ المتفضِّلا

    So he was wretched, failing with you

    While I won - you, bestower of favor

  90. أقمْ فيَّ من عاداتِ سيبك سُنّةً

    هي الغيثُ أو كانت أعمَّ وأجزلا

    Appoint in me the custom of your Sibak's calm

    Accustomed to request and pour down

  91. فكم من نوالٍ مُسرفٍ قد حقَرته

    وفلَّلتَ من جُمَّاعِهِ فتفلَّلا

    And defeat my adversary by an ennobling command

    Securing for me thereby immediate guarantee

  92. وعارفةٍ لو يُسأَلُ البحرُ بعضَها

    تعذَّر من إخراجها وتمحَّلا

    And compensate my ruin and my poverty

    That I find what you made flex most rigid

  93. فمْر فيّ بالمعروف من سيب راحةٍ

    معوّدةٍ أن تستهلَّ وتهطِلا

    And trust in the reward your servant's verse guarantees

    For its purity in lips and heart when empty

  94. وكن مرغِماً خَصمي بأمر مشَرِّفٍ

    تُوفِّرُ لي منه الضمان المعَجَّلا

    Of lasting good works I train it

    In my soul if pure, my heart if empty

  95. وتجبرُ من جاهي الكسير وخَلَّتي

    فأجدرُ من أسمنتَ من كنتَ مُهزلا

    Pilgrimages that traverse lands bearing

    A prayer answered or scattered praise

  96. وثِقْ بجزاءٍ شعرُ عبدِك ضامنٌ

    لما طاب منه في الشِّفاهِ وما حلاَ

    If I clothe Eid in a garment from them

    It preens itself in it, lost, imagining

  97. من الباقياتِ الصالحاتِ أروضُها

    بنفسي إذا طابت وقلبي إذا خلا

    And stretch out the hand of one who hopes from your bestowal

    Lowering in its sanctity, imploring, supplicating

  98. سوائرَ يقطعن البلاد حواملاً

    دعاءً مجاباً أو ثناءً مُنَخَّلا

    Heralding therefrom that he'll return with it

    To you the length of days, life extended

  99. إذا ما كسوتُ العيدَ منهنَّ لِبْسةً

    ترفَّلَ فيها تائهاً وتخَيَّلا

    This day God gave superiority

    As you were of those who carry command most superior

  100. ومدّ يدَ الراجي نوالَك مدلياً

    بحرمتها مستشفعاً متوسِّلا

    So respond on the morning of eternity conveying

    Conditions of purpose - never greater festival or eve

  101. يبشِّرُ عنها أنه عائدٌ بها

    عليك مدى الأيام عمراً مطوَّلا

    And be one who breaks fast with righteousness - put on, for Godwariness,

    Your reward - and remove your fast, approved

  102. هو اليومُ أعطاه الإله فضيلةً

    كما كنتَ ممّن يحمِلُ الأمرَ أفضلا

    The gardens of loftiness luxuriate for you, breaking fast

    Or vowed fasting - voluntary or obligatory -

  103. فقابْل به وجهَ الخُلود مبلَّغاً

    شروطَ المنى ما كَرَّ عيدٌ وأقبلا

    Until you see the summits of mountains feasible

    For progress, the atmosphere water uninterrupted

  104. وكن مفطراً بالبِرِّ والبَس على التقى

    ثوابكَ وانزِع صومَك المتقبَّلا

    If a morn breaks and you don't rule over us

    The darkness won't split, nor the dawn break

  105. تزخرف جنات العلا لك مفطراً

    وصائم فرضٍ كنت أو متنفّلا

  106. إلى أن ترى صُمَّ الجبال فلائقاً

    مسيَّرةً والجوَّ ماءً مسلسَلا

  107. إذا ما انجلى صبحٌ ولستَ مملَّكاً

    علينا فلا انشقَّ الظلامُ ولا انجلَى
