لي عند ظبي الأجرعِ
قصاصُ جرح ما رُعي
At the antelope's den I have
A story of my unhealed wound
سهمٌ بعينيه دلي
لُ فُوقِهِ والمنزعِ
An arrow in its eyes led me
To stumble over it unawares
جناية منكرُها
بيّنةٌ للمدعي
An unforgivable crime
With clear proof for the plaintiff
غارَ وما احتسبته
فغار بين أضلعي
It fled and I did not expect
So it fled between my ribs
ما خلتُ نقعَ القانصي
ن ينجلي عن مصرعي
I did not let the archer
See me felled at my death place
يا ليلتي بحاجرٍ
إن عاد ماضٍ فارجِعي
Oh my night at rocky grounds
If the past returns then go back
بتنا على الأحقاف تن
هالُ بكلّ مضجعِ
We slept on the camel litters
Alas! At every bed
موسّدين اللينَ من
كراكِرٍ وأذرعِ
Pillowing the soft textiles
Of the camel litters and arms
مقلةُ ليلٍ بُيِّضتْ
بفجره المنصدعِ
The darkness of night whitened
With its cracked dawn
قالوا الصباحُ فانتبه
فقال لي الطيفُ اسمعِ
They said it dawned so awaken
The specter said to me listen
فقمت مخلوطاً أظن
نُ البازل ابن الرُّبَعِ
So I rose confused I think
The Bazil son of Rube'a
حيرانَ طرفي دائرٌ
يطلب من ليس معي
My eye wandering, circling
Seeking who is not with me
أرضى بأخبار الرِّيا
حِ والبروق اللُّمَّعِ
Pleased with the news of rains
And the scintillating lightning
وأين من برق الحمى
شائمةٌ بلعلعِ
And where is the fever's lightning
Scolding with flashes
سلا مجالي الشيب عن
غيم الشباب المقلعِ
Peace my life of old age from
The stormy youth's departing
غمامة طخياءُ ري
عَ سِربُها بالفَزعِ
An arrogant cloudy party
Its flock in panic
فأجفلت لا تلتوي
أخلافُها لمرضَعِ
So I scowled not to be bent
By its twisted offshoots
كما نجت خائفةٌ
ورهاءُ لم تُقنَّعِ
As an apprehensive she-camel fled
Its behind did not obey the milker
ملكتَ يا شيبُ فخذ
ما شئت مني أو دعِ
You have conquered, oh old age, so take
What you wish of me or leave
طارقة بمثلها
فاجئة لم تَرُعِ
A knocking like it
Startling, not shy
أفنَى الخطوبَ قبلها
صبري وأفنت جزعي
Has my patience with misfortunes steeled me
And steeled my anguish?
أعدَى جبيني مفرقي
فاستويا في الصلعِ
It attacked my forehead separating me
So they equaled in bareness
طليعة وجهي بها
قبلَ الممات قد نُعي
The vanguard of my face with it
Before death was eulogized
كان الشبابُ سُدفةً
من لك لم تقَشّعِ
Youth was a veil
For one like you did not rend
سَتراً على ألاّ يرا
ني الدهرُ لو لم يرفعِ
A cover so time would not
See me if it did not lift
كم ليلةٍ ظلماءَ طا
لَت بدرُها لم يطلعِ
How many dark nights
With its unveiled moon did not rise
أنكَركِ استكانتي
للدهر وتخشُّعي
You denied my humility
To fate and deference
كريمة ما عهِدتْ
تأوّهي لموجِعِ
O noble one, not accustomed
To sigh for pain
لم ألقِ أطماري ولي
فيها مكانُ مَرقَعِ
I have not cast my tears
How much of life I carry but
كم أحملُ الدنيا فلا
ترقُّ لي من ظَلَعِ
It does not soften from tenderness
I blame it, a rock
أعذُل منها صخرةً
ليس لها من مَصدعِ
With no cracks to crumble
My advice is done
قد فنيت مواعظي
والدهرُ لم يرتدعِ
And fate did not refrain
Each day a companion
في كل يوم صاحبٌ
يشرَع غير مَشرَعي
Opens a way not my own
He swears at me frequently
له شِهادي مكثراً
ولي مقِلّاً سَلَعي
And I sparingly vend
He trades me his morals
يسومني طباعه
مع كلفةِ التطبُّعِ
Despite the effort of compatibility
He wants of the radiance of my face
يريد من رفد اللئا
م أن يكون شِبَعي
That his hunger be sated
Farfetched! What an abyss
هيهات ما أبعدها
هشيمةً من نُجَعي
From my loaf of bread
Had I been a lone desert wolf
لو كنتُ ذئبَ قفرةٍ
لما تبعتُ طمعي
I would not have followed greed
Verily the abdomen is narrow
إن البطينَ مخمِصٌ
فاشبع ذليلاً أوجُعِ
So satiate despicably or pain with me
You blamed a life of meagerness
أسففتَ لدنيَّةٍ
فقعْ لها أو طرْ معي
Then bear it or leave me
You claimed poetry is
زعمتَ أنّ الشعرَ من
رزق الفتى الموسَّعِ
Of the expansive youth's bounty
And you blamed my stinginess with it
ولمتَ في ضني به
قلت تسمَّحْ وبِعِ
Saying "be generous and sell"
Do you not see its recession
أما ترى كسادَه
على نَفاق السِّلعِ
At the hypocrisy of peddling
And suffice you ignorance of it
وحسبك الجهل به
خسارةً للمبضِعِ
A loss for the talents
Far and never! The generous
رُبَّ وحاشا الكرما
ء سامعٍ لم يسمعِ
Listener did not listen
Deaf an ear of honor
صَمَّ وأُذنُ عِرضه
تسمعُ عنّي وتعي
Hears me and knows
And a speaker not capable
وخاطبٍ وليس كف
ئاً لكريم البِضَعِ
Of the generous creation
He builds but does not endow
يبني ولم يمهرْ وإن
طلَّقَ لم يمتِّعِ
And if he divorces does not give alimony
The whiteness of his smile feigning
يمنعُ أو ينغِّصُ ال
عطاءَ إن لم يمنعِ
Over a darker conscience
He dressed me in a quality
وأبيض الثغر ابتسا
ماً عن ضميرٍ أسفعِ
That would be stripped by pretending
He laid me on embers and said
ألبسني صنيعةً
تُسلَبُ بالتصنُّعِ
If you wish then burn
I carried him deceiving
أفرشني الجمرَ وقا
ل إن أردت فاهجعِ
With my humility and weeping
Oh you who thirsts, if I do not want
حملته مغالطاً
بجذلي تفجُّعي
But the poured drink
If I were chaste of property
يا عطشى إن لم أرِدْ
إلا الخليَّ المَشرَعِ
I would not have drank my tears
And if I straightened every crookedness
لو عفتُ كلَّ مالح
لما شربتُ أدمعي
I would have straightened my ribs
The living's herd is chased
ولو أقمتُ كلَّ عو
جاءَ أقمتُ أضلعي
Wherever it hoped to graze
And man shrivels
يذاد سرحُ الحيّ من
حيثُ رجا أن يرتعي
At the hems of a wasted year
My brother who believed, if
ويجدِب المرءُ على
أذيالِ عامٍ ممرِعِ
I make him recognize me, my panic
And was a sword like Jonah's son
أخي الذي آمنُ إن
عرّفنيه فزعي
When I say "cut off"
I risk with my cowardice, in an
وكان سيفاً كابن أي
يوبَ إذا قلت اقطعِ
Afflicted nation's march
If he sees a little bend
أخطِرُ مع جُبني به
في لأمَةٍ المشيِّعِ
He says "ascend"
My matter in his blessing
إذا رأى ثنيَّةً
لسودَدٍ قال اطلُعِ
Is the followed passion's matter
Each day a bounty
أمرِيَ في نعمته
أمرُ الهوى المتَّبَعِ
Of his distributed sword
And a kindness that mends
في كلِّ يوم جمّةٌ
مِن سَيبِهِ المُوَزَّعِ
The rift of my shattered side
Surpassing my stumbling
وعطفةٌ ترأبُ شَع
بَ شمليَ المنصدعِ
Forever with renewal
Long the clouds' palm with generosity's
سابقةٌ عثرةَ حا
لي أبداً بدعدعِ
Passion excited
And excellent in the anklets of glory
طال السحابَ كفُّ صب
بٍ بالسماحِ مولَعِ
An unrivaled racer
He goes out without it
وبذَّ حلباتِ الجيا
دِ سابقٌ لم يُقرعِ
From all of it and the veil
He entered battles vanquishing
يخرج عنها ناصلاً
من جُلِّهِ والبرقعِ
Mocking the armored one
And confounded the son of forty
خاض الحروبَ حاسراً
يهزأ بالمدرَّعِ
In the plain of forty
From the victorious sun of ascension
وحالَمَ ابنَ الأربعي
ن في سُموط الأربعِ
In the place of ascent
The roots of glory in them
مِن غالبي شمس العلا
على مكان المطلعِ
No poverty for increases
They wore the world and after
أصولُ مجدٍ ما بها
فقر إلى مفرِّعِ
Its beauty was not removed
And they milked its pearls
هم لبسوا الدنيا وبع
دُ حسنُها لم يُنزَعِ
Before the arid sisters
From every fascinating conqueror with
واحتلبوا دِرَّتَها
قبلَ جُفوف الأضرُعِ
The matter of piety
Showing the darkness with a hearth
من كلِّ أخّاذ مع ال
فتك بأمر الورَعِ
Of his blazing generosity
Hearing the voice of the guest in
يوري الدجى بموقدٍ
من جوده المشعشعِ
The most musical steed's whinny
They sleep sated and they
يصغي لصوت الضيف إص
غاء الحِصانِ الأروعِ
Are fulfilled for the hungry
And a coal from worries
يمسون غَرثى وُهُمُ
مَشبَعةٌ للجوَّعِ
Of a terrifying face
They were in abodes made perfect
وفحمةٍ من الخطو
ب ذات وجهٍ مفزعِ
For the armored nights
A worthy opponent if
كانوا بدورَ تِمِّها
على الليالي الدُّرَعِ
The sun of morning was disputed
They took turns with its tribulations
لُدٌّ إذا القولُ احتسَى
ريقَ البليغِ المِصقعِ
With every gentle touch, unblemished
I cling to comfort
تعاوروا صعابَه
بكلّ رِخوٍ أصمعِ
From a delicate and braver
As if their pens
أعلقُ بالراحةِ من
بنانَةٍ وأشجعِ
In leisure and hastening
A sprout with palms
كأنّ أقلامَهُمُ
في اللُّبثِ والتسرُّعِ
In the ropes of arms
A compatriot whose
نباتةٌ مع الأكف
فِ في حبال الأذرعِ
Rising sun if pierced would not be pierced
Standing from the banners
مَناسبٌ لو قُذِعتْ
شمسُ الضحى لم تُقذَعِ
On an obstructed path
If every critic crept
واقفةٌ من العلا
على طريقٍ مهيَعِ
A viper it would not sting
It carries the pain of branding irons
لو دبَّ كلُّ عائب
أفعَى لها لم تُلسعِ
On the skin of palms
They endured drizzle and melted
تحملُ فيها ألمَ ال
مِيسَم جبهةُ الدعِي
In the pouring floods
Take the seat of honor and
صابوا رَذاذاً وتلو
وَتْ بالسيول الدّفَّعِ
Give me the place of the ladle
Your aggressor with a deficiency
اِقتعدوا الرِّدف وأع
طَوْك مكانَ القَمَعِ
Is a victim of greed's disease
Seeking to ascend but
باغيك بنقيصةٍ
قتيلُ داءِ الطمعِ
Matching the maimed's retribution
If he were of my advice
أوقصُ يبغي طلعةً
على قُصاص الأتلعِ
In appearance and hearing
I would say "turn away, oh noble one
لو كان من نصيحتي
بمنظرٍ ومسمعِ
From the place of predators
Leave ascension and travel
قلتُ تنحَّ يا فري
سُ عن مكان السَّبُعِ
Above its imprisoning darkness
A matter entrusted to SUWA
دع العلا واسرح على
حابسها المجعجِعِ
Whose breech is not patched
Every undemanded oath
أمرٌ يناط بسوا
ك خَرقهُ لم يُرقَعِ
The palm of the handless breaks
And seldom does boast
كلُّ يمينٍ لم تُرا
فدْها يسارُ الأقطعِ
Enrich the destitute youth
By you my fresh branch dressed
وقلَّما أغنى الفتى
شميمُه بأجدعِ
And returned rough bark
And the wealthy's impact appeared
بك اكتسى عودي وعا
د جَلِداً تضعضعي
My worth and my consequence
You corrupted my heart and mind
وبان في الدهر الغني
يِ أثَرى وموقعي
Cut off my kin and origin
So I dismissed my loved ones and
أفسدتَ قلبي وعَقَلْ
تَ قارحي وجذَعي
My party's victory weakened
Then listen closely to them
فعفتُ أحبابيَ واس
تضعفت نصرَ شِيَعي
The best said, listen
Censuring to embarrass a soul
فاسمع أكاثرْك بها
أحسنَ ما قيل اسمعِ
Of the disconnected withholder
The stars envy
مَطارباً تُحرج نس
كَ الحابسِ المنقطعِ
Its uncovered coldness
No thought occurred to an innovator
تحنو النجومُ حَسداً
لبُردها الموشَّعِ
Before me or inventor
I exhausted the transmitters until
ما خَطرتْ لمحتذٍ
قبلي ولا مبتدِعِ
I brought it down by my wits
Every day a crowned king
أعيت على الراقين حت
تى استنزلتها خدَعي
With its studded crown
Agitates in its absence
في كلِّ يوم ملكٌ
بتاجها المرصَّعِ
The envious' painful disease
Ignorance brings it out
يهيج في اغتيابها
داءُ الحسودِ الموجَعِ
Frightening if not cut off
Angry that the tender branches
يخرجها بجهله
تروع إن لم تقطعِ
Of the lavender be broken
It hurries me and the stars
غضبانَ أن تُكسَرَ بال
نَبعِ فروعُ الخِروعِ
Ignited in passion
When its eyes
يُسرِع فيّ والعثا
رُ مولَعٌ بالمسرعِ
Became too small to follow me
I punished it by laughing
لما غدت عيونُه
تصغُر عن تتبُّعي
At its mention in company
While eating with it
عاقبته بضحِكي
من ذكرِه في المجمعِ
The swarming insects' fodder
The tongues of blame are immersed in
وآكلين معه
زاد الذباب الوُقَّعِ
Their reputations in beeswax
They resembled so I did not know
تُغمَرُ كفُّ الذمّ من
أعراضهم في شَمَعِ
A barber from a weaver
They said and you listened but who
تشابهوا فما عرف
ت حالقاً من أنزعِ
Can make me hear, my listeners?
What business have I and you
قالوا وأصغيتم ومن
يسمعُ فيَّ مُسمِعي
My ward against harm and panic
One who hopes for me through you
مالي وأنتم وزَري
من الأذى ومفزعي
Unseen did not hope
Every day an ugly incident
يطمع فيَّ عندكم
بالغيب من لم يطمعِ
One of the innovations
The meat of the lion is chewed in it
في كلّ يوم وقعةٌ
شنعاءُ إحدى البدعِ
By the fangs of the hyena
While the victory and honor of rank are in you
يُمضَغُ لحمُ الليث في
ها بنيوب الضَّبُعِ
The impenetrable flank
And I have no tongue or hand
وفيكم النصر وعز
زُ الجانب الممتنِعِ
For defense
Caring for merit if
وليس عنّي بلسا
نٍ ويدٍ من مَدفَعِ
My tether was not cared for
And if I got angry with anger
رعايةً للفضل إن
كان ذمامي ما رُعي
That exhausts my place
Then my absence would be long
ولو غضبتُ غضبةً
أعوز سدُّ موضعي
And your expectation burden
In people's settlements, nothing
إذاً لطالت غيبتي
وكدَّكم توقُّعي
My elbows push out of my grazing
No residence shrinks
ما في حياض الناس ما
يُزحَمُ عنه مَكرَعي
For me despite my self-restraint
If I ask for your homes
ولا يضيق منزلٌ
عنِّيَ معْ تقنُّعي
Then every home squares me
But my soul for your love
إذا سلوتُ دارَكم
فكلُّ دارٍ مربعي
A cat did not scheme
If it saw eternity descend
لكنَّ نفسي عن هوا
كم قطّ لم تختدعِ
From you it would not descend
I filled my heart with passion
لو رأت الخلدَ النزو
عَ عنكُمُ لم تنزعِ
For your mature and youth
So if love of anything
ملأتُ قلبي شغفاً
بكهلكم واليفَعِ
Compatible with you does not fit
I pitched among you so let
فلو يسامُ حبّ شي
ءٍ معَكم لم يسعِ
Who wishes raise or lower
And if I found a refuge
خيَّمتُ فيكم فليضَع
من شاء أو فليرفعِ
In other than you I would not be satisfied
ولو وجدتُ مَقنعاً
في غيركم لم أقنعِ
