1. الليلُ فالأرضُ لليثِ الشرى

    عرّسَ يبغي راحةً أو سرى

    The night, and the earth belongs to the bold lion

    Who roams seeking rest or prey

  2. فتارةً مفترِشاً غابةً

    وتارةً مفترساً مُصحِرا

    Sometimes stretching out in a forest

    And sometimes lurking at dawn

  3. والظَّفَر الحلو له إن عفا

    عمداً وإن نَيَّبَ أو ظَفَّرا

    Sweet victory is his if he shows mercy

    Intentionally, and if he growls or shows his claws

  4. مرَّ على هِزَّة ألبادِهِ

    يكبُرُ أن يؤمرَ أو يُزجَرا

    He passed by his prides’ celebration

    Scornful of being commanded or deterred

  5. يَرى من العزَّة في نفسه

    ما لم يكن ماحضُ نصحٍ يَرَى

    He sees in himself a dignity

    Unlike the insincere counsellor’s view

  6. أغلب لم يُخلَقْ رَكوبَ المطا

    سهلاً ولم يُقصَر لخزمِ البُرى

    Most were not created to easily ride horses

    Nor were saddles made short for the backs of humans

  7. فما تريد اليدُ من مِقودٍ

    يرجِعُ عنه باعُها أبترا

    So hands do not desire a bridle

    That their owner then finds maimed

  8. للّه رامٍ سهمهُ رأيُهُ

    إذا رأى شاكلةً فكَّرا

    For the one who aims his arrow is his opinion

    Whenever he sees a resemblance, he ponders

  9. يطيع من عزمته مُقدِماً

    ما غلَّس النهضةَ أو بَكَّرا

    He obeys his own resolve leading

    Without hesitating or delaying

  10. تنصره الوثبةُ من أن يُرَى

    مستصرِخ الخُلسةِ مستنصِرا

    The leap helps him before he is seen

    Appealing for cowardice or help

  11. لا تجذُبُ الأوطان منه ولا

    يخدعه للضيم طيبُ الكرى

    Homelands do not attract him, nor

    Is he fooled by the charm of settlements

  12. يأنسُ بالنعمةِ ما ساندت

    جنباً منيعاً وحمىً أعسرا

    He is content with grace as long as it supports

    A strong side and protects the vulnerable

  13. فإن مشت في جوّها ذلّةٌ

    رابك مذعوراً ومستنفرا

    But if humiliation creeps during it

    It disturbs him, alarmed and ready for battle

  14. لِيمَ على غَشْمتِه فاتكٌ

    هلّا ارتأى فيها وهلّا امترى

    His nobility scorns being commanded

    Or deterred like a docile horse

  15. وقيل لو عُلِّلَ مستأمناً

    والداءُ إن موطِلَ يوماً سَرَى

    When resolved, nothing delays his charge

    Or makes him falter or hesitate

  16. وكم جَنَى الرَّيثُ على حازمٍ

    فودّ لو قدَّمَ ما أخَّرا

    Say to the leader of the state, be successful

    The opponent has surrendered and hostility has ended

  17. يا فارسَ الغرَّاء يرمِي بها

    سهلَ العِنانِ الجانبَ الأوعَرا

    So observe those who trail behind

    The blinded must eventually see

  18. يردُّ من غُرَّتها مُعتِماً

    على الدآدي غَلَساً مقمرا

    You rode it while young and smooth

    Bearing the fierce, intrepid lion

  19. ينُصُّ من أرساغها والمطا

    إما جناحاً طارَ أو مَنسِرا

    It casts the home of humiliation behind

    Seeking glory and prominence ahead

  20. قل لعميد الدولة افلح بها

    قد سلَّم الخصمُ وزال المِرَا

    Whispering, taking its share

    Approaching, leaving nothing behind

  21. فانظر إلى الأعقاب من صدرها

    لابد للمعتم أن يُفجِرا

    Until it firmly carried you in comfort

    Honouring the desert as it would a city

  22. ركبتَها بزلاءَ مخطومةً

    تحملُ منك الأَسَدَ القَسْورا

    Guarding the surroundings, if provoked

    It would shake the white and the brown

  23. ترمِي بدار الذلِّ من خلفها

    ظهراً وتبغِي في العلا مظهرا

    It reminds you of glory, visiting dignitaries

    Night talk and the fires of encampments

  24. ناجيةً تأخذ من حظّها

    مقبِلةً ما تركَتْ مدْبِرا

    And youths around you from settled lands

    Your allies, invited and offering help

  25. حتى استقلَّتْ بك بحبوحةً

    تشرُفُ بالبادية الحُضَّرا

    When angry you’d think it a supernatural creature

    Making the mountain side tremble

  26. محميّة الأرجاء إن هُيِّجت

    زعزعتِ الأبيضَ والأسمرا

    It obeys your every command and prohibition

    That you disdained to command or prohibit before

  27. تُذكِرُك المجدَ بوفد الجدا

    وسامرَ الليل ونارَ القِرى

    Your hopeful enemy whom you cannot see

    Has now, after you, become minister

  28. وغلمةً حولك من عامرٍ

    شَرطَك مدعُوّاً ومستنصَرا

    A suitor’s prayer who did not find his fortune

    More miserable through you or deprived

  29. تحسَبُها إن غضِبتْ جِنَّةً

    وجانبَ الزاب بها عَبقَرا

    After you, it denied his courtship

    Seeing no equal or dowry

  30. تأمر في ذاك وتنهى بما

    أنفتَ أن يُنهَى وأن يؤمَرا

    It was degraded until its back

    Became more calloused than when it cantered

  31. عدوُّك الآملُ ما لا يرى

    أصبح من بعدك مستوزَرا

    Spurned among the blind

    The one-eyed competes for it against the sightless

  32. دعوة داعٍ لم يجد حظُّهُ

    أشقى له منك ولا أخسرا

    The pauper appropriated it when it became

    Sold for a coin, yet still unaffordable

  33. قد أنكرتْ بَعدك خُطَّابَها

    فما ترى كُفئاً ولا مُمهِرا

    It had delighted you with passionate love

    Today it is desolate ruins

  34. وابتُذلتْ حتى غدا ظهرُها

    أجلبَ مما ركِضتْ أدبرا

    Your absence made it your enemy’s

    Letting the wolf graze on it at dawn

  35. بين بني العاهات منبوذةً

    يزاحم الأعمى بها الأعورا

    Remorseful, fists clenched

    Regretting it completely

  36. واستامها المفلِسُ لما غدتْ

    تباعُ بالفلْس فلا تشتَرَى

    It asks the travelling caravans about you

    Like a lover who willingly abandoned his loved ones

  37. كانت بكم مغنَى هوىً آهلاً

    فاليومَ أضحت طللاً مقفرا

    And spent the night tossing and turning

    Where, it asks, where are you, regretting,

  38. وساقَها سالبُها ظلَّكم

    للذئب يَرعَى سَرحَها مُصحِرا

    Apologising, hoping to be forgiven

    Missteps cannot be undone

  39. داميةً من ندمٍ كفُّه

    يأكلها الإبهامَ والخِنصَرا

    By one who persists without remorse

    O treasure, no companion retained you

  40. ينشُدُ منكم وطراً فاته

    ويسأل الرُّكبانَ مستخبِرا

    The merit of a treasure is to be cherished

    Tomorrow your treacherous critic will come

  41. كعاشقٍ فارقَ أحبابَهُ

    طوعاً وسامَ الليلَ طيفَ الكرى

    Newly aware, repentant

    With deceit he hopes to regain favour

  42. أين له أين بكم نادماً

    معتذراً إلا بأن يُعذَرا

    Begging a slip be overlooked

    But stand firm, able to hold your resolve

  43. ما أخلقَ العاثرَ يمشي به

    كسيرهُ أن يبتغي مَجْبَرا

    Without distraction, cool your anger

    And show habitual forgiveness

  44. لا يعرف المعروفَ من أمره

    مُعمَّرٌ حتى يرى المنكَرا

    As one like you, authoritative, is wont to do

    Let the wound heal, it has been

  45. يا نعمةً ما صاحبتْ صاحباً

    وعُقلَةُ النعمة أن تُشكَرا

    Cauterized by branding iron and healed

    Make haste lest it escape; no cadaver

  46. غداً يوافيك بأيمانهِ

    جاحدُك الغامطُ مستبصِرا

    Was ever shrouded faster than it recovered

    Ride it, for it has been tamed

  47. بغدرةٍ يرغبُ في بسطها

    وزَلَّةٍ يسأل أن تُغفرا

    Humbled to be reined or saddle-broken

    Absence and its discipline

  48. فثَمَّ فاردد قادراً رأيَك ال

    شاردَ وابرُدْ صدرَك الموغَرا

    Have subjugated the necks of the arrogant

    A sapling you planted and raised

  49. واجرِ من الصفح على عادةٍ

    مثلُك مستولٍ عليها جرى

    Do not let another reap its fruits

    The Almighty does not commence

  50. والتحِم الجُرح فقد طُوّحَتْ

    جَنْبَاه بالمِسبار واستنهَرا

    Without building high and seeing through

    Ask for my promises about the likes of it

  51. بادرْ بها الفوتَ فما شِلوُها

    أوّل مَيْتٍ بك قد أنشِرا

    Did I fail or speak untruthfully out of threat

    If revelation descended on a poet

  52. واركب مطاها فقد استخضعتْ

    ذلّاً لأنْ تُلْجَم أو تُثفَرا

    I would be the bearer of good tidings, warning

    Or if one unqualified claimed miracles

  53. وروّضَ البُعدُ وتأديبُهُ

    لك الرقابَ الذلَّ والأظهُرا

    I would be the evident, dazzling miracle

    How many signs I have for you, had you

  54. غَرسٌ فتيٌّ أنت أنشأتَهُ

    فلا تدَعْ غيرَك مستثمرا

    Preserved them, events and omens set in motion

    It thanks openly and complains if

  55. ما أسَّسَ القادرُ إلا بنَى

    عُلْواً ولا يخلُقُ إلا فَرَى

    What is said proves true or untrue

    No truth grants its advocate

  56. واسأل مواعيدِيَ في مثلها

    هل أخلفت أو كذّبتْ مَزجَرا

    A reward or prize for being purchased

    My best fortune with you was whatever

  57. لو نزل الوحيُ على شاعر

    قمتُ بشيراً فيكُمُ منذرا

    I gave generously and poetically

    Forgetting while destiny rules supreme

  58. أو ادعى المعجِزَ من ليس بال

    نبيّ كنتُ المعجِزَ المبهرا

    And power requires I be remembered

    You were my spring and the fertile soil of your land

  59. كم آيةٍ لي لو تحفَّظتُمُ

    بها وفألٍ بعلاكم جرى

    Where the thirsty serpent finds joy expectantly

    Why has my meadow, once flowering, withered

  60. يشكر مقروءاً ويشكو إذا

    صح الذي حدّث أو خبّرا

    Since you became inaccessible, remote

    My scream is to you, not from you

  61. لا حقُّ من قدَّم حقّاً به

    يُعطَى ولا فوزَةُ ما يُشتَرى

    I am not fortune’s traitor or cheat

    Estrangement has consumed me since you left

  62. وجُلُّ حظي عندكم فيه ما

    أجودَ ما قال وما أشعرا

    Consuming only an emaciated youth

    It has found my flesh sweet, even lacking

  63. تناسياً في حيث تقضي العلا

    وتوجبُ القدرةُ أن أُذكَرا

    Anything but brackish, bitter taste

    I was shriveled, yellow leaves

  64. كنتم ربيعي وثرى أرضكم

    يلقى الحيا ظمآنَ مستبشرا

    From being deprived of your water

    So how am I, while the wells of your homes

  65. فما لربعي دارساً هامداً

    مذ صرتم الأنواءَ والأبحرا

    Have denied even a drop to fall?

    Who will preserve my life in his shade

  66. إليكم الصرخةُ لا منكُمُ

    ما أخونَ الحظَّ وما أجورا

    As I count the years and months?

    And who but you can face adversaries

  67. قد أكلتني بعدكم فترةٌ

    ما أكلت إلّا فتىً مُقْترا

    Satisfying and conciliatory?

    You even called me wasteful

  68. واستعذبتْ لحمي وإن لم تجد

    إلّا مُمِرّاً طعمه مُمقِرا

    When a praiser is called prolific

    I swear if time passes me by

  69. كنتُ على البِلَّةِ من مائكم

    منتفضاً من ورقي مُصفِرا

    Those who fell short will regret after me

    O my intimate pillar, reconsider

  70. فكيف حالي ونوى داركم

    قد منع القطرةَ أن تقطُرا

    An outcast abandoned in the wild

    Help immediately, even modestly

  71. من لي بصون العمر في ظلِّه

    سِنيَّ أُحصيهنَّ والأشهرا

    And guarantee your generosity for the sake of what

    The valley has granted and the land has known

  72. ومن لكم غيري طباق الملا

    ما راضه فيكم وما سَيَّرا

    And do not leave me with the prayers of youth

    Miserable among the destitute

  73. حتى لقد سُمِّي بكم مسرفاً

    حيث يُسمَّى مادحاً مكثرا

    Remind yourself that my devotion to you

    Will shame you, despite me

  74. أقسمتُ إن فاتكم الدهر بي

    لَيندمَنْ بَعدِيَ مَنْ قَصَّرا

    Observe the moon rising unblemished

    Although its crescent remained hidden one night

  75. يا عُروتي الوثقَى أعدْ نظرةً

    في خَلَّةٍ منبوذةٍ بالعرا

    Make use of the New Year and celebrate it

    Employing it for glory and conquest

  76. تلافَ بالعاجل ميسورَها

    وصُبْ ولو مؤتشِلاً مُنزِرا

    One day in days but it was seen

    To have merit and pride over them

  77. واضمن على جودك من أجل ما

    قد أنعم الوادي وعمّ الثرى

    As if its lack of colour was solely

    To avoid competing with your command

  78. ولا تدعني ودعاء الصّبا

    في معشرٍ أشقَى بهم مُعسِرا

    Attribute it to Chosroes, for if you choose it

    You will have matched its character

  79. نَبِّهْ على أنّ اختصاصي بكم

    يُخرِجُكم بالرّغم مني يَرَا

    It swears, and honesty is its oath,

    By He who loved the earth and illuminated it

  80. واطلع طلوعَ البدر ما ضرّه

    سرارُه ليلةَ ما أقمرا

    That you will remain eternal owner

    Without time altering or repeating

  81. واستخدم النيروزَ واسعد به

    مستعملاً في العزّ مستعمرا

  82. يومٌ من الأيام لكن رأى

    له عليها الفضلَ والمفخَرا

  83. كأنه من نخوة قُلِّد ال

    تسويدَ عن أمرك أو أُمِّرا

  84. ينسب كسرى فإن اختاركم

    ديناً فقد وافقكم عنصُرا

  85. يُقسم والصدق قمينٌ به

    بما حبا الأرضَ وما نوّرا

  86. أنك تَبقَى مالكاً خالداً

    ما ردّ منه الدهر أو كرّرا
