1. سل بالغُوير السائقَ المغلِّسا

    هل يستطيع ساعةً أن يحبسا

    Ask the sly driver to stop a while,

    Can he restrain himself for an hour?

  2. فإن في الدار رذايا لوعةٍ

    نوقاً ضِعافاً وعيوناً نُعَّسَا

    For in the house are doe-eyed gazelles,

    Weak fawns with sad eyes.

  3. وثَملين ما أداروا بينهم

    إلا السهادَ والدموعَ أكؤسا

    And thirsty ones who have not intertwined

    Except dreams and tears in cups.

  4. ما علِمتْ نفوسُهم أن الردى

    ميقاتُه الصبحُ إذا تنفَّسا

    Their souls knew not that the appointed time for ecstasy

    Is dawn when they breathe freely.

  5. راخِ لهم فإنهم وفدُ هوىً

    يرضيه أن تُرْوِدَ أو أن تَسْلَسا

    Go easy on them, for they are a delegation of passion

    Satisfied whether you visit or avoid.

  6. تركتَ من خلفك أجسامَهُمُ

    وسقتَ ما بين يديك الأنفُسا

    You left behind their bodies

    And ahead of you are their souls.

  7. اِعطفْ لهم شيئاً فلو لم ينفِسوا

    على الشموس في الخدور مَنفَسا

    Show them some sympathy, for even if they do not breathe

    The morning breeze in the meadows.

  8. لأغرقوك دمعةً فدمعةً

    وحرَّقوك نفَساً فنفَسا

    They would drown you in a tear after tear

    And burn you with breath upon breath.

  9. أين تريد عن حياض حاجر

    أن تستجيز الخضمَ والتلسُّسا

    Where do you want to speed from the stable of al-ḥajar

    Crossing the rough and steep terrain?

  10. وهل على ماء النخيلِ مطعنٌ

    إذا وردتَ مثلِثاً أو مخمِسا

    What fault do you find in the water of palm trees

    When you arrive third or fifth?

  11. وفي الحمول سمحةٌ ضنينةٌ

    تُبذَل وجهاً وتصانُ ملمَسا

    The camels are generous but crafty,

    They give their faces but guard their touch.

  12. شنَّتْ على الكناس حتى لم تدع

    للريم إلاّ حَمَشاً أو خَنَسا

    They raided the baggage until they left

    Nothing for the white gazelle but shyness or withdrawal.

  13. تبسِمُ عن أشنبَ في ضمانه

    نطفةُ مزنٍ لقبوها اللعَسا

    From their smiling lips emerges

    The bud they call al-la‘asa.

  14. سلسالةٌ إن لم أكن عرفتُها

    رشفاً فقد عرفتُها تفرُّسا

    A necklace - though unknown to me before -

    I came to know through observation.

  15. يا هل إلى ذاك اللمى وسيلةٌ

    تبلُّ لي هذا الغليلَ اليَبِسا

    O is there a way to reach those cheeks?

    To melt this arid yearning?

  16. أم هل إلى ذاك الهلال نظرةٌ

    إما بملءِ العينِ أو مختلسَا

    Or a glimpse of that crescent,

    Fully or secretly?

  17. بل كلّ ما بعد المشيبِ مسمِحٌ

    ماكسَ أو منجذبٌ تشمَّسا

    Rather, all past youth's prime is permitted

    White or blackened from the sun's rays.

  18. ومن عناء اليد أن تبغي الجنا

    والساقُ خاوٍ والقضيبُ قد عسا

    It is futile for the hand to seek bounty

    While the leg is empty and the rod erect.

  19. لامت على تعزُّلي إذ أبصرتَ

    جحفلَ شيبٍ هاجماً ومُحمِسا

    You blamed me for my isolation when you saw

    A flood of gray hair attacking ferociously.

  20. تنكّرته مذ رأته بُلجةً

    ضاحيةً أن عرفته حِندِسا

    I denied it when billowy and shining,

    But acknowledged it when white and lackluster.

  21. بيضاء أعشت في السواد عينَها

    فاشتبه الصبحُ عليها والمَسا

    Her white eyes have lived in blackness

    So dawn was confused with dusk upon them.

  22. إذا تلفعتُ بها مُنصِّعاً

    ما كنتُ من صبغتها مورّسا

    When I wrap myself in it, drunk,

    I am not dyed by its color.

  23. منتبَذاً نبذ الحصى يردّني

    نقدُ العيون أخزرا وأشوسا

    It drives me away like pebbles

    Censure of eyes, blue and fiery.

  24. فلم تكن أوّلَ حال غبطةٍ

    أحسنَ فيها زمني ثم أسا

    My prime was not the first or best age

    In which my time was happiest.

  25. هو الذي ما جاد أو ضنّ ولا

    رقَّ عليَّ مرةً إلا قسا

    He who was never generous or stingy

    And never softened towards me but was harsh.

  26. وقد ألفتُ خُلْقَه تمرُّناً

    به على لونيه أو تمرُّسا

    I am accustomed to his ways, training myself

    To his two ways, or taking precautions.

  27. حلفتُ بالحُلْق الطِّلاحِ صعُبتْ

    على الوجَى سُوقاً ولانت أرؤسا

    I swore by the twisting necks, hardship

    Became difficult, roads narrowed.

  28. مثل القسيِّ كلُّ ظهر فوقه

    ظهرٌ بإدمان السُّرى قد قُوّسا

    Every back above which is a back

    Bent from frequent drinking sprees.

  29. من كلّ فتلاء تطيع المَرِسَ ال

    مثْنى عليها أو تعودَ مَرِسا

    From every smooth dune obeying the plow

    Not repeating it or becoming plowed again.

  30. تقامر الأخطار في نفوسها

    على الطلاب إن زكا وإن خسا

    They gamble with hazards against their souls

    For students, whether prominent or insignificant.

  31. يخبطن يطرحن الربى عجرفةً

    في الوفد يطلبن العتيقَ الأملسا

    They struggle, casting aside shame,

    In the delegation seeking the finest soft garment.

  32. إذا فرقن الموتَ لم يفرقَنْ ما

    دُيِّثَ من أرضٍ وما توعَّسا

    If death separates them, it will not separate what

    Was heaped or folded from land.

  33. حتى يؤدّين الشخوصَ بمنى

    مكبّراً للّه أو مقدّسا

    Until they deliver the farewells in Mina

    Glorifying or sanctifying God.

  34. لا ضاع من يعتمد الحظُّ به

    من قسمةٍ على عميد الرؤسا

    No share is lost whose fortune relies

    On the pillar of all the pillars.

  35. أروعُ لا ترعَى الخطوبُ ما رعَى

    ولا تشلُّ غارةٌ ما حرسا

    Most wondrous, worries do not watch over

    What he protected, nor does an assault enfeeble.

  36. أبلجُ بسّام العشيّ ما غدا

    وجه الجدوبِ في الثرى معبِّسا

    Brighter than the smile of eventide that made

    The cheeks of the young gazelle in the soil grin.

  37. مبارك الصفقة يهتزُّ الغنى

    في كلّ ما صافح أو ما لمسا

    Blessed is the deal in which wealth quivers

    For all he greeted or touched.

  38. يفرِّجُ التقبيلُ عن أنامل

    لو قارع الصخرَ بهنّ انبجسا

    Kissing reveals fingers

    That if they hit rocks would spark.

  39. جاد على اليُسر فلما أفلست

    به عطايا اليسر جاد مفلسا

    He was generous to ease, but when I lost

    The gifts of ease, he generously lost.

  40. لا يحسَب المالَ يغطِّي عورةً

    عاريةً ما غطّت العُرىَ الكُسَا

    He does not count money covering

    A naked shame even garments do not cover.

  41. أرهفَ للإعراض من عزمته

    أصمعَ ما أنبلَ إلا قَرطسا

    Keener to turn away than his resolve

    Deaf to the finest oratory.

  42. إذا رمى غايته بظنه

    كفى يقين غيره ما حَدَسا

    When he aims for his goal in his mind

    Certainty beyond his suffices for conjecture.

  43. قال فأعدى الخُرسَ بالنطق كما

    حسَّنَ عند الناطقين الخَرَسا

    He said and then surpassed the mute in speech

    As he surpassed speakers when silent.

  44. وقام يبغي حقَّه من العلا

    حتى إذا جاز النجومَ جلسا

    He sought his right from the heights

    Until he surpassed the stars and sat down.

  45. موقَّر المجلس إما هو في ال

    دست احتبى أو ركن ثهلان رسا

    Venerated in his seat, whether he

    Inclined or settled in a corner comfortably.

  46. إذا سُطَاه أوحشت جليسَه

    فاض عليها بشرُه فأنَّسا

    When eloquent, his companion feels lonesome,

    His cheerfulness pouring over them, comforting.

  47. ذبَّ عن الخليفتين رأيُه ال

    منصورُ ذؤبانَ الخلافِ الطُّلُسا

    He defended the two caliphs’ view

    Against the critics of the legacy.

  48. أصحرَ في إثر العدوّ عنهما

    أغلبُ ما واثب إلا فَرَسا

    He deserted the enemy for them

    Victorious however much he attacked.

  49. خلافة اللّه رقى مشيّداً

    منها الذي كان أبوه أسّسا

    God’s caliphate he ascended to construct

    It from one whose father laid its foundation.

  50. طهَّرها تدبيرُه فلم يدع

    إزاءَها من العباد نجِسا

    His planning purified it, leaving

    No impurity for people facing it.

  51. رقَى من الأعداء كلَّ حيَّةٍ

    أصمَّ لو لم يحوِهِ لنهَسَا

    He surmounted every cunning snake

    Deaf even if not coiled around him.

  52. كم قد جلوت الحقَّ عن بصيرة

    عمياءَ فيها وكشفتَ لَبَسا

    How justice you have extracted from the blind eye

    And removed confusion from the perplexed!

  53. أنفقتَ ميراثك في طاعتها

    جناه أيوبُ الذي قد غَرَسا

    You spent your inheritance obeying it

    As Job harvested what he planted.

  54. تمنع من قناتها من رامها

    بالعَجْم أو أدردتَ عنها الأضرُسا

    You forbid those coveting it through Persian

    Or protect it from the non-Arab.

  55. أنت الذي أحيا الزمانَ راعياً

    من سنن المجد به ما درسا

    You who revived the era, following

    Its exemplary traditions neglected.

  56. قومك كنتَ في اقتفاء سعيهم

    زرارةٌ في الفخر تتلو عُدَسا

    Your people, you followed their endeavor

    As buttons follow loops.

  57. قد كبَّرتْ لك العلا وشكرتْ

    نشرَك ذاك الكرَمَ المُرمَّسا

    The heights have glorified you and thanked

    Your shining through that lasting nobility.

  58. بك اعتلت ناري وهبّت عاصفاً

    ريحيَ والتفّ قضيبي واكتسى

    Through you my fire rose and my winds blew violently

    And my rod straightened and was clothed.

  59. وطمعتْ في زمني فضائلي

    وكنتُ من إنصافه مستيئسا

    My virtues hoped for my time

    While I despaired of their fairness.

  60. إن أجدبتْ أرضيَ صُبتَ مزنةً

    أو أدجنتْ حاليَ لحتَ قَبَسا

    If my land withered, you poured copious rain,

    Or if my state darkened, you ignited a flame.

  61. ساهمتَني يسرَك والعسرَ ترى

    بخسَ العلا وغَبنَها أن أُبخَسا

    Your ease has partnered me while hardship - you see -

    Wrongs the heights and cheats them if cheated.

  62. لا تذخر الأنزرَ تضطرّ له

    ولا تَضنُّ ما وجدتَ الأنفَسا

    Do not hoard gifts regretting them

    Or be stingy with what you find most precious.

  63. فلا تصبني فيك يدُ حادثٍ

    أومضَ أو بارقُ خطبٍ أربَسا

    So no blow of events strikes me in you

    Or flashing of alarming news cuts me down.

  64. ولا تزل تُلين لي من عُنُقِ ال

    أيام فظّاً في مقادي شرسا

    You never cease to gentle the rugged days against me

    And the harsh roads I tread.

  65. وعاودتني بادئاتُ نِعمٍ

    منك إذا استوحشت كانت أَنَسا

    The beginnings of your blessings return to me

    When I feel lonely, comforting me.

  66. ضافية تفضُلُ عن ذلاذلي

    لا أنزِع الحُلّةَ حتى أُلبَسا

    With hospitality they prefer me over my equals

    I do not take off the robe until clothed anew.

  67. قد راعني العامَ افتقادُ رسمها

    وأن أَرى مُطلَقه محتبَسا

    The arrival of its timing watched over me this year,

    And to see its release withheld.

  68. حاشاك من تطيُّري على العدا

    من سطرِها الثابتِ لي أن يُطمَسا

    Far be from your evil omen against vows

    From its established course to be erased!

  69. دَيْني وفي الشتاء بعدُ فضلةٌ

    يوضح منها المشكِلَ الملتبِسا

    My debt - and in winter - is surplus

    Clarifying ambiguities.

  70. فاسمح بها واسمع لها قواطناً

    شوارداً ملايناتٍ شُمُسا

    So allow it and listen submissively

    To soaring hopes.

  71. تطوي الفجاج لم ترحِّل ناقةً

    لها ولم تسرِج إليها فرسا

    It folds the empty desert, neither marching

    A she-camel nor saddling a horse.

  72. لا ترهب الجِنَّةَ في عزيفِها

    إن أعتمت ولا تخاف العَسَسا

    Do not frighten the army during its march

    If darkened, nor fear the guard.

  73. عذائراً تكون ما شئتَ بها

    كلَّ ضحَى تهنئةٍ معرِّسا

    It will be whatever you wish, every morning

    A blessed feast, wedding.

  74. قد أمنتْ بحسنها وصونها

    عند الرجال كلَّ ما تخشى النِّسا

    It feels safe and protected

    From men, all women dread.

  75. ما كُتبتْ أو قرئت لم تتَّرِك

    لغيرها مخطَّةً أو مَدرَسا

    Nothing written or read leaves

    Anything for others, marked or studied.

  76. تشفع للنيروز فيما جاء من

    قبولكم مبتغياً ملتمسا

    It intercedes for Nayrūz in what came

    From accepting you seeking aid.

  77. ثم يعود مثلُها عليكُمُ

    بألف عيدٍ عَرَباً وفُرُسا

    Then its like returns upon you

    With one thousand feasts, Arabs and Persians.

  78. في نِعمٍ يقينُها وحقُّها

    يغني الليالي عن لعلَّ وعسى

    In blessings, certainty instead of “perhaps” and “if only”

    Suffices nights.
